"Alex Morrow is not new to the police force-or to crime-but there is nothing familiar about the call she has just received. On a still night in a quiet suburb of Glasgow, Scotland, three armed men have slipped from a van into a house, demanding a man who is not, and has never been, inside the front door. In the confusion that ensues, one family member is shot and another kidnapped, the assailants demanding an impossible ransom. Is this the amateur crime gone horribly wrong that it seems, or something much more unexpected?
As Alex falls further into the most challenging case of her career, Denise Mina proves why "if you don't read crime novels, Mina is your reason to change".

My thoughts about Still Midnight
This novel takes place in Glasgow, Scotland and is a suspenseful crime mystery. The main character is DS Alex Morrow who is a hard, unhappy woman who enjoys being a cop and gets the opportunity to help solve the kidnapping of a man. His kidnappers want an exorbitant amount of money for the return of the victim. The victim has demons of his own as he relives the rape of his mother as they escape Uganda. Police-department sexism leads to DS Alex Morrow’s dim rival, Grant Bannerman, being placed in charge of the investigation; but Alex’s efforts uncovers clues that can lead to the solving of this case. The kidnappers Eddie and Pat bungle the kidnapping and the daughter of the victim is accidently shot in her hand. Some of the antics of the kidnappers reminds one of The Keystone Cops as they further bungle the job of getting the ransom. The story progresses at a fast pace but the story can be gloomy at times as the reader knows that Alex has some issues with her husband but you really do not know what that may be until midway through the story and it does explain why she is so tormented. The ending kind of had me wanting more because it was kind of a let down. I did enjoy the story though and Denise is an excellent author whose work I would read more of.

I received this book for review from Miriam Parker at Hachette Book Group. Thank you Miriam! Miriam has also provided me with a giveaway copy of Still Midnight.
