The Calm After the Storm by Mya O"Malley Book Tour and Giveaway!

Calm after the storm

The Calm After the Storm by Mya O'Malley

Can true love shine through the darkest storm? The storm of the century raged through the northeast, causing destruction and despair, millions were left without power and hope. Weeks later, countless people were still devastated by the destruction of Hurricane Sandy, Emma Riley among them. Determined she didn’t need the help of a man, Emma was convinced that she could brave the aftermath of the storm on her own. That is, until Jake came into her life. After having suffered heartbreak and embarrassment, Jake Mack, a utility foreman, volunteered to travel north from small town, Georgia to assist with the aftermath of the storm. Jake was decidedly done with women. But he didn’t count on meeting Emma or falling in love so quickly. Can he trust this woman or will his past get in the way and ruin the relationship with the one woman he truly loves?

Excerpt from The Calm After the Storm:

Jake and his crew had now been in the suburbs of New York for a few days. His first thought upon entering this area was his surprise at the devastation. Sure, he had heard about the destruction on the news and had seen footage of the aftermath of Sandy, but it still hadn’t prepared him for the actual sight of Sandy’s rage. Telephone poles were down, trees were snapped in two, and houses were completed destroyed by the storm. Seeing all the destruction only strengthened Jake’s resolve that it had been the right thing to come. He felt proud to be able to help out and be a part of the solution to the horrible aftermath of this disaster.

As the day was wrapping up. Jake and Chris met up with some of their crew in the next town to finish one more area before calling it quits. The chill in the air was something that Jake had prepared for, but was not accustomed to. Clutching the new flannel he had purchased right before his trip, he put it on over his thermal shirt. Thankful for his thermos filled with hot coffee, Jake grabbed it but quickly tossed it aside.

“Come on, Chris! I asked you to stop drinking my coffee. Now there’s none left,” he said as he shook his head, irritated at his friend. Chris looked up at his boss sheepishly.

“Sorry, man. I didn’t sleep well last night. I needed some caffeine.”

“Well, that makes two of us.”

They rode until they approached the utility pole that needed attention. Jake and Chris were among the first to arrive and got busy setting up for the job. Within minutes, the rest of the assigned crew trickled in. The workers were now familiar with the details and routine of this job, so for the most part they worked in silence, focused on getting this last job done so that they could grab some dinner and hit the sheets. It was cold and dark, the night chill settling in upon them. Jake supervised and helped his crew perform their individual duties as quickly as possible. As they were just about wrapping things up, Jake headed over to Steve, one of the older guys directing traffic. He looked frail and tired.

“Hey, Steve. I got this. Why don’t you call it a night, huh? We’ll meet you at the hotel for some dinner.”

“Nah, Jake, we’re almost done here. I’m good,” Steve said as he looked up at Jake with glaring dark circles under his eyes.

“Steve, go. I’m serious. Get in a hot shower and we’ll meet up for dinner. Boss’ orders. Now go and take Andy with you,” Jake gestured toward another man on the crew who looked like he was ready for bed.

Shrugging his shoulders, Steve made his way to one of the smaller utility trucks, calling for his co-worker to join him. Jake took over the responsibility of directing traffic, slowing people down and stopping cars when necessary. Yawning, he waved a small SUV along, noticing that the approaching driver was slowing down, much more than necessary. Jake squinted his eyes to get a better look. The car came to a stop when Jake stepped up to it and its window rolled down. Looking back at Jake was a woman who appeared pretty, even in the diminished light. Wait, scratch that—she was stunning, with long, wavy hair and piercing eyes. His heart faltered just a bit.

“Hi. I wanted to thank you guys for all of the hard work that you’ve been doing. We really appreciate you guys coming up here. I think I speak for everyone,” she said as she smiled widely. Her smile hitched his breath ever so slightly. Jake smiled back. This was certainly a change. Since he had been in this area, some people waved, some people smiled, others remained with their eyes straight ahead, but nobody had yet offered any thanks verbally. So different from the Southern hospitality way of life where he grew up, Jake mused.

Here it was different, the pace of life was much faster. People always seemed to be in a rush, and they minded their own business for the most part. Sure, being so close to the big city must be nice and the landscape was quite beautiful at times, but he didn’t think this lifestyle was something he could ever get used to. It seemed too stressful, too impersonal. He would be glad to be back home when his job was finished.

The woman leaned over and offered Jake a box of donuts, disposable coffee cups, and a box of hot coffee. Jake was impressed.

“Thank you, that was very thoughtful!” Jake gushed, thrilled at the idea of hot coffee. He thought he felt warmth spread across his cheeks despite the chill in the air.

The woman stared back and smiled at Jake for a minute and then set her eyes on the road ahead. She waved as she pulled away.

“Wait!” Jake called out. “Wait, what was your name?” But the words were lost. The mysterious woman with the coffee and donuts was long gone.

“Guys!” he called out as his crew worked on cleaning up for the night. “Guys! Our guardian angel just appeared, and she brought coffee!”

The coffee and donuts were gladly received, but the idea that someone would go out of their way to show a random act of kindness truly touched Jake. He felt the warm liquid slide down his throat and knew that he would always remember the woman’s thoughtfulness. Who was he kidding? That woman’s beautiful face was what he would most remember. He just wished that he had gotten her name.

Synopsis:

Space Time, 2800, Earth

As the Earth shifts on its axis, mankind is caught in a war of survival and time. Imprisoned in this time war, Captain John Garrick and the N.S.T.E.A. Phoenix become a pawn between technology, humans, and what's left of civilization.

No amount of careful planning can prepare the time jumpers for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move.

As the N.S.T.E.A seals a deal to deliver time technology to the notorious outlaw, Menser, Garrick plots to undermine the N.S.T.E.A.

Garrick doesn't live by the rules, and he knows one thing is for sure: kill or be killed.

Technology becomes the enemy and time an illusion as Phoenix's crew prepares for the inevitable - a fight to the finish.

Excerpt

Suddenly an ear-piercing boom was heard across the desert as the Phoenix broke the sound barrier. The golden warship pitched then dived hard to the left, circling, slowing its descent. It was pre-dawn in Mediteranea, only to be dimmed by eerie reddish-orange clouds of dust.

The Naimen territory of Mediteranea, once a thriving sea town, was barely visible through the red dust. The Mediterranean Sea disappeared when the meteor hit leaving nothing but desert turned to dust, inhabitable only to criminals and drifters.

The Phoenix lowered its thrusters slowing the massive ship, as it sunk its struts in the desert sand. The ship shuddered slightly as her hull settled into the gravitational pull of the desert. Hidden by a vast craggy outcropping, blending into the landscape, Phoenix glowed red against the rock walls like a Chameleon letting the heat dissipate into the hot desert air.

“Status,” Becker demanded across the bridge deck.

Mr. Dessa replied, “Hull integrity is holding, sir! We’re down!”

Becker looked out the shielded windows at nothing but red dust, “Lieutenant Chiang! How bad is this dust?”

Lieutenant Chiang reported, “Zero visibility, sir.”

Garrick got out of his seat as Farber, Gillie, and Wexler joined him on the Command Center, “Not good at all. Maybe to our favor. Phoenix is hidden behind these rocks, then maybe we can get in and out of this hell hole unnoticed.”

Becker advised Garrick, “We can’t stay on the ground for more than four hours in this dust, before the engines choke.”

Garrick didn’t divulge his real plan, but he never went by the rules either, “I agree. If we’re lucky, this won’t take long.” Garrick’s only concern right now was Phoenix, and getting rid of Menser.

Becker ordered, “Suit up. You’ll need breathing gear.”

Garrick replied, “Good idea. Less chance of being recognized too.”

Becker responded, “Just take what you need. Small arms only.”

Garrick commanded, “Farber! Wexler! Gillie! Pack light in case we need to run. Farber! Bring a couple of Heshi’s. Hey! Wear something red and dusty!”

Gillie, Wexler, and Farber left the bridge to pick up their gear. Garrick turned to Becker, “What’s the distance to the city from here?”

Becker looked at the scan grids, “From this viewer, maybe one, maybe two klicks.”

Garrick looked out the shielded windows at the craggy wall hiding Phoenix, “Too close but at least we’re behind this rock.”

Suddenly, Becker grabbed Garrick’s arm unexpectedly however, for a different reason, “Garrick! I know what you’re feeling. There’s something wrong here. Really wrong. I’m giving you a direct order! Find Menser and take him out. Blow the Penteract. Understand?”

Garrick contemplated Becker expecting a different conversation, “My hair’s standing up on my neck. I’ve got a bad feeling myself.”

Becker seemed concerned, “One last thing. You’ll be out of communication with Phoenix. So you’re on your own.”

Garrick answered knowing he had his secret weapon in his pocket, “I’ve got A.L.I.S.”

Just then, Gillie, Wexler, and Farber came back dressed in desert gear with breathing masks. They had an extra robe for Garrick. Gillie handed the breathing mask to him, “Here Cap.”

Garrick put his robe on and hung the mask around his neck, “Stay away from the Dragars. They can smell humans a mile away. They’re dangerous.”

Farber replied meekly, “I just wished your blue genie is following behind us.”

Garrick pointed towards Mediteranea, “She’ll be close enough. City is that way. Find Menser and the Penteract. Get it?”

Gillie, Wexler, and Farber yelled, “HOORAH!”

Garrick barked, “A.L.I.S.! Command!”

A.L.I.S. materialized in her blue haze, “Guardian waiting!”

Garrick ordered, “Link!” Then A.L.I.S. disappeared waiting for his command.

Julie_007About the Author

Something magical happened in the musty basement of Julie Doherty’s local courthouse. She went there intending to research her ancestry, not lose herself in a wealth of stories, but the ghosts of yesteryear drew her into the past and would not let her go. The trail left by her ancestors in those yellowing documents led her from rural Pennsylvania to the Celtic countries, where her love of all things Irish/Scottish blossomed into outright passion. She became particularly interested in Somerled, self-styled "King of Argyll" and progenitor of the Lords of the Isles. In 1164, he led a fleet of 164 galleys up the River Clyde in an all-or-nothing attempt to overthrow the Scottish crown. What would lead a man of his advanced years to do such a thing? Of course, history records he did so because the king demanded forfeiture of his lands. But the writer in Julie wondered ...what if he did it for the love of a woman? Those early thoughts led to SCENT OF THE SOUL, Julie's first novel, available now on Amazon. Readers will notice a common theme throughout Julie’s books: star-crossed lovers. This is something she knows a bit about, since during one of her trips to Ireland, she fell in love with an Irishman. The ensuing immigration battle took four long years to win. With only fleeting visits, Skype chats, and emails to sustain her love, Julie poured her heartache into her writing, where it nourished the emotional depth of her characters. Julie is a member of Pennwriters, Romance Writers of America, Central PA Romance Writers, The Longship Company, Perry County Council of the Arts, and Clan Donald USA. When not writing, she enjoys antiquing, shooting longbow, traveling, and cooking over an open fire at her cabin. She lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, who sounds a lot like her characters. I, Truly Lament by Mathias B.Freese Spotlight!

Book Details
Paperback: 252 pages
Publisher: Wheatmark (September 15, 2014)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1627871616
ISBN-13: 978-1627871617

The Book

I Truly Lament—Working Through the Holocaust is a varied collection of stories: inmates in death camps; survivors of these camps; disenchanted Golems complaining about their designated rounds; Holocaust deniers and their ravings; collectors of Hitler curiosa (only recently a few linens from Hitler’s bedroom suite went up for sale!);  an imagined interview with Eva Braun during her last days in the Berlin bunker; a Nazi camp doctor subtly denying his complicity; and the love story of a Hungarian cantor, among others.

The Author

Mathias B. Freese is a writer, teacher, and psychotherapist. His recent collection of essays, This Möbius Strip of Ifs, was the winner of the National Indie Excellence Book Award of 2012 in general nonfiction and a 2012 Global Ebook Award finalist. His I Truly Lament: Working Through the Holocaust was one of three finalists chosen in the 2012 Leapfrog Press Fiction Contest out of 424 submissions.

Endorsements:
“Freese says that ‘memory must metabolize [the Holocaust] endlessly,’ and his book certainly turns hell into harsh nourishment: keeps us alert, sharpens our nerves and outrage, forbids complacent sleep so the historical horror can’t be glossed over as mere nightmare. The Holocaust wasn’t a dream or even a madness. It was a lucid, non-anomalous act that is ever-present in rational Man. In the face of this fact Freese never pulls punches. Rather, his deft, brutal, and insightful words punch and punch until dreams’ respite are no longer an option and insanity isn’t an excuse.”

—David Herrle, Author of Sharon Tate and the Daughters of Joy

“... Freese’s haunting lament might best be explained (at least to me) by something Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote about Herman Melville’s endless search for answers to questions that perplexed him all his adult life. Melville was incessantly obsessed with what one might call the why of it all—life, death, metaphysical mysteries. Similar to Freese, Melville was repeatedly afflicted with a dark and depressive state of mind.”

Sudetenland is the premiere novel by author George T. Chronis. The book delivers suspenseful and sweeping historical fiction set against Central European intrigue during the late 1930s leading up to 1938’s Munich Conference. Having swallowed up Austria, Adolph Hitler now covets Czechoslovakian territory. Only France has the power to stand beside the government in Prague against Germany… but will she? The characters are the smart and sometimes wise-cracking men and women of this era – the foreign correspondents, intelligence officers, diplomats and career military – who are on the front lines of that decade’s most dangerous political crisis. If Czechoslovak president Edvard BeneÅ¡ ignores the advice of French premier Édouard Daladier and refuses to give up Bohemian territory willingly, then Hitler orders that it be taken by force. The novel takes readers behind the scenes into the deliberations and high drama taking place within major European capitals such as Prague, Paris, Berlin, Vienna and London as the continent hurtles toward the crucible of a shooting war.

Praise for Sudetenland

"Chronis impresses with such a challenging and intriguing debut effort, well written, impeccably researched." -- Melinda, Unshelfish "Anyone that is looking for a thorough and rewarding read will enjoy Sudetenland." -- Diana, BookNerd "The plot moves quickly along keeping you intrigued with well defined characters and great imagery to help immerse yourself in the story... I adored the way George managed to weave together the tragedy of war, depression and politics with romance, love and hope." -- Jennifer, pirategrl1014

03_George T. ChronisAbout the Author

After years as a journalist and magazine editor, George T. Chronis decided to return to his lifelong passion, storytelling. A lover of both 1930s cinema and world history, Chronis is now devoted to bringing life to the mid-20th Century fictional narratives that have been in his thoughts for years. Sudetenland© is his first novel. Taking place during turbulent times in Central Europe during the 1930s, the book took eight years to research and write. The author is already hard at work on his second novel. Chronis is married with two daughters, and lives with his wife in a Southern California mountain community.
