We just passed tax time and my preparer once told me, everything in my life is deductible because it all goes into my books. She reads my books. And while I don’t deduct even close to ‘everything’, her statement stuck with me because she’s right. My life goes into my books. So many times my mother will tell me she’ll be reading a scene and she’ll know what someone is going to eat before they get to that part. I don’t generally see this as I’m writing. I don’t purposely draw on things. But a writer lives her work.
A writer’s work is her life.
Unlike the normal course of events, In The Fireman’s Son, I was conscious of pulling on my life for one particular scene. It doesn’t actually happen on the page. Faye is telling Reese about something that happened. It sounds surreal. Readers might scoff. But I know, first hand, that it’s very real. That it did happen. Faye’s son, Elliott, suffers from sleep walking. With Elliott it’s a form of release from emotional stress. In one particular scene Faye is keeping him from pulling down curtains in his struggle to ‘get out’ – at the point out the window of his bedroom – but she tells of another time when the little boy was actually going to go over a balcony and had to be dragged back. She talks about his strength when he’s asleep and how pulling him back left bruises on his forearms.
I saw those bruises on the arms of someone I love dearly. I cried for little Elliott. And I gave him a happy ending, too – I promise.

Fun Facts

When you open my books, you will find they don’t take place in one location. I want you to fall in love with my characters and my love of travel. I want you to feel like you have seen some of the places that I have been lucky enough to visit. Under Her Wings takes place in Scotland and I want you to fall absolutely head over heels in love with the Isle of Skye, and other locations in Scotland like I did.
The second book visits Italy and some of the scenes at the farm eating under the grape vines with family are similar to my own life experiences. I want to you to see some of the hidden treasures in Italy that my husband and I discovered. Go to my website at annemariecitro.com and look through the pictures that follow the books.
I love old castles and old B&B’s because of their history. I always want to stay there and then once I get there I can’t sleep because I am terrified of ghosts. Sometimes I wake my husband to take to me to the bathroom because I am afraid to go by myself. If we are driving and I see a castle I make him stop. I just can’t get over the history of castles. How many happy and sad things happened within the walls.
When I travel, I love to see art. Not just refined art, I also love street art. Banksy is one of my favorite street artists and he spray paints in the middle of the night and no one knows who he is. When I was in Brighton England I got to see one of his works of art and it was as cool as seeing a Mona Lisa.
I paint with acrylics, oils, watercolors on many different textiles and surfaces. I make wire, metal and forge medal sculptures. I made jewelry out of silver and furniture out of willow saplings. I love to work with wood, I carve, and chainsaw totem poles and animals. I love to wood burn leather and wood.
I hate when people say I have to decide on one type of art. I only have one life and I want to try everything at least once. Art should never be perfect in my point of view, otherwise we would have a machine create it. I don’t want to spend my life perfecting something that shouldn’t be perfect. It should make me happy and whether it is a canvas or words in a book I am so proud of my all of my work.
