Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

My Thoughts

Paradox Forged in Blood takes place in two different times in a woman's life. Present at her 80th birthday and in the past when she was growing up and a nanny in a well to do household in Cleveland, Ohio in the late 30's.

Ellen Grace O'Malley was born in 1916, the oldest of a family of eight children. Patrick Michael O'Malley was just 18 months old when he was taken from his crib. Ellen was only six at the time but she had woken up and observed someone , she thought it was her father, standing over Patrick's crib. She realized her mistake when in the morning Patrick's disappearance was discovered. She realized her mistake in not telling her parents. In her defence, she had been told to not disturb her parents if the door was locked. Because of what she witnessed, the abductor could have been apprehended earlier or could he? She eventually told her parents what she had witnessed but Patrick was never found.

Ellen is offered a job as a nanny to the Sheridan family after Mrs.Sheridan observes how well Ellen controls her unruly siblings. She enjoys her job as a nanny and is happy to be contributing to the household's income as it is during a time when the Nazi party in Germany has just taken hold and has now crossed into America with it's nasty tentacles. The Sheridan's go out to an event one evening and come back to find a burglar robbing the place. Louis Sheridan is killed and his wife knocked unconscious. A description of the assailant is kind of vague but Ellen describes what she can. After this incident, Ellen observes a man watching her and he mimes that he knows where she lives. Scared to say anything to the police she keeps quiet.

The story also takes us into the lives of many other characters that all intertwine, including twins Gertl and Sadie, who's parents were killed in a motor vehicle accident. They end up being separate and spend most of their lives not knowing where the other is. They are Jewish and during this time it is not safe to be a Jew at all. We go through WWII and the atrocities that came out of it to arrive at the climax of the story on Ellen's 80th birthday.

This story is character driven with many people's lives intercept and weaves together to tell an interesting tale, during a time of fear, upheaval, and war the reader learns how each character impacts the lives of others. I enjoyed the story, the only thing I did not like was how it was formatted, I am sure this is because it is an ebook and not all books are not formatted correctly. I switched over to my iPad and it was easier to read.

I received a copy of the book for review purposes.

Book Excerpt:

Wipeout!

Jacob Kent stepped out of his car as he scanned the fair on the other side of the parking lot, his heart pounding. As with many country fairs, the parking lot was no more than an abused pasture. This one was about the size of two football fields. Fair employees decked in bright yellow directed the early trickle of cars to their temporary berths. Jacob ignored them, choosing instead a parking spot near the exit. Anticipating the possible need for a quick getaway outweighed a pimply teen’s futile attempts to redirect him.
He regarded the rides twirling and spinning above and around the strolling families. Despite the morning sun, the lights flashed merrily, beckoning to all. At 11 a.m. it wasn’t crowded, but he knew that would soon change. Locking his car, he slowly picked his way through the beaten grass, combing all directions for a clue the girls were there. As the unmistakable sound of carnival music floated toward him on the warm summer breeze, he reviewed his plan.
First, he would walk through the fair to familiarize himself with the layout they had printed out. Then he would adjust their escape route to where he parked the car. After assessing the grounds, he would plant himself somewhere along the concourse, and watch the crowd. That’s how he had always found Casey in the past, and that’s how he was going to find her again.
A voice came over the loudspeaker, momentarily dimming the carnival noise. “Would the owner of a red ford truck, license plate AIP537, please return to your vehicle? Your lights are on.”
Jacob tensed. Was that some kind of clue? He looked over the parking lot. No, he could see the lights of the red truck from here. He smiled ruefully to himself.
Get a grip, Kent, he thought as he watched a portly balding man march exasperatedly toward the truck.
He sighed. Intellectually, he had to acknowledge they might have pieced together a bunch of randomly forgotten items into a fantastical story, but emotionally, he couldn’t help but believe the items served an ultimate purpose. If The Herd was here, he was going to find them. He also knew if he wasn’t careful, he could spend the entire day jumping at shadows and following dead ends.
Like that little commotion over by the edge of the fair. To his over-active imagination, that game of tag could look like a child trying to escape from the evil clutches of—
“HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, WIPEOUT!” sang out over the loudspeaker.
His head jerked up. As the pounding drums from the familiar song drowned out the carnival music, all doubt was erased. The loudspeaker was sending out a warning. His eyes darted back toward the commotion he had noticed. That was no game of tag. That was a child trying to escape a man in hot pursuit. Jacob couldn’t be positive at this distance, but it sure looked like Robin.
With his heart in his throat, he broke into a run, zigzagging between cars, trying to intercept the fleeing child as it headed toward the side of the parking lot. In this surreal moment, the same song they had used for obstacle course training was being piped out like background music to a scene in a movie. But this scene was real, where a real menace was gaining. Caught in his own nightmare, Jacob was watching Robin run for her life, and he was not close enough to help.
As the predator and prey crossed the area between the fair and the parking lot, the longer legs of the adult closed the gap between them, but once they reached the cars, the advantage became hers. Robin’s small size and training put some distance between them as she dodged around vehicles. However, her constant change of direction made it difficult for Jacob to maintain a course of interception.
Watching Robin’s progress, Jacob realized she was trying to head back toward the fair. Silently applauding Robin’s decision to get closer to other people who could help her, Jacob altered his course accordingly.
So did Robin’s pursuer.
Suddenly, her stalker eliminated the space between them by clambering up and over two pickup trucks, and landing an arm’s length away. Skidding, Robin veered around another vehicle with the man on her tail. As Jacob frantically tried to reach her, a brunette Sam suddenly popped out from behind a car and neatly took the man out with one magnificent sweep of a skateboard to the head.
Where did she come from? A stunned Jacob skidded to a stop, gasping for breath, his chest burning.
With a quick high-five, the sisters raced back to the fair. Jacob tried in vain to get their attention, but he hadn’t quite recovered enough breath to formulate sounds louder than gasps. He shook his head as he tried to calm the burning in his lungs. He was a wreck, but they were able to run off.
And I was going to save them? He weakly chuckled. What was I thinking?
Sobering, he trotted over to the man who was staggering to his feet. With rage marshalling all of his strength, Jacob drew back and smashed his fist into the man’s face. The unexpected pain in his fist was nothing compared to the satisfaction of watching Robin’s former threat drop like an anchor.
Shaking the pain out of his hand, Jacob aimed a vindictive kick at the ribs of his girls’ attacker. Any qualms he might ordinarily have about hitting a man when he’s down were nonexistent when it came to someone threatening his family.
Satisfied the man was no longer a danger, he took off in the direction he had seen his girls disappear, trying to calm the fear rising in his chest. He doubted this man had come alone. The girls probably knew that, too, and would be hiding. How was he going to find them before their pursuers did?
The light glinting off the speaker perched atop a telephone pole caught his eye. Jacob skidded to a stop and stared at it. Of course. When Robin had been trying to escape, that speaker had been blasting out WipeOut, but now he only heard carnival music. With a grin, Jacob decided it was time to stop believing in coincidences. Someone at the fair must be helping them. If he found that person, he’d be able to find the fugitives.

“Ma’am, I said you can’t go in there. I’m calling security!”
Raven could almost feel the secretary spit the words as she grasped the double doors with both hands and opened them. Remember to breathe.
Yards away, Liam stood at a full window, back to her, talking on the phone. When he turned around, she stopped. He was taller than she remembered. Intimidating.
The business magazine hadn’t done him justice. She’d stared at it for hours, hoping to find a flaw. Now, as she stood just inside the doorway, she didn’t know what to do or say. She watched him round the corner of his desk. The bridge of his nose complemented a face of perfect symmetry. Gold skin due to Creole linage he’d inherited from his father’s side. Biceps bulged under his shirtsleeves—powerful, like he could pick her up and toss her out. Hell, out of the universe!
And then he glanced her way.
Fuck, I looked into his eyes. Liam’s amber gaze held Raven captive. How long have I been standing here? Their eyes magnetized; his leaving her speechless and lost. Stop, Raven. Take a breath and stop looking into his eyes! Damn you.
Two suited men stood at either side of her, tugging her arms. The connection she had with Liam snapped as she was tugged away.
“Get your hands off me!”
“Raven?” Head cocked to the side, Liam stepped closer.
“You don’t remember me?” Raven asked. The men stopped; all three looked at Liam, brows raised. She wondered if she was just that forgetful.
“Let her go,” Liam said, coming to his senses.
“Mr. Lemaître, allow me to just pat her down,” one of the guards said.
“Just let her go. Despite her size, she’ll hurt both of you if you don’t,”
His demeanor was serious, commanding even as he rounded the desk to his chair. “Lil’ Raven, always so feisty.”
She watched the guards close the door behind them. Turning back to Liam, she disregarded his request for her to sit, needing the height factor to make five foot two feel … bold. Jutting her chin, her commanding tone made her feel five five. “You’re going to help me with my—our daughter!”
“Daughter?” Liam sank into his seat.
“Yes, our daughter. I want you to help me with her.” Raven stepped past the white couches. “Financially.”
“Financially?” He rubbed a hand over blond hair.
“All that education, yet you don’t understand, Liam? I want help with Royael.” His inquisitive face made her lose momentum. Five two again.
“Royal, what? You’re crazier than I remember.”
“Our child’s name is Royael. You wouldn’t know that, though.” She let her fingertips rest on his desk, leaning forward as spirals of hair framed an icy gaze. “I’ve been paying for dance classes, clothes, food, everything! I guess I gotta get crazy with you,” she warned, noticing her words didn’t seem to penetrate.
“You look pretty crazy standing there.” Liam looked at her balled fists, eyes twinkling. “Should I call security back?”
“That’s how it gotta be?” She took a seat on top of the sleek desk, crossing her legs. She felt five ten and had seen the stance in a movie. Keeping up calm appearances, she pulled back a silver ball from the swinging pendulum, watched it clink back and forth. She breathed through her mouth. His scent already embraced her. Calming. Teasing. Angering. Envying.
He placed a hand on the phone, eyebrow cocked.
“We can go there if you want, Liam. Before you dial security, I should warn that I am great friends with one of the editors of Scandalous magazine.” Voice soft as satin, Raven peered into Liam’s eyes. It was safe, now that she had all his attention. She breathed in the scent of fear. Inside, she was well over six feet and had the upper-hand!
He took his hand off the receiver.
She smirked. “Thought so. I’m sure you don’t want anyone to know our little secret.”
“Hmmm …” Liam laced his hands behind his head and leaned back for a second, taking in that pout of hers. Then his hazel eyes narrowed. “I do not like threats, Raven Shaw.”
“Oh, yeah. Well, I didn’t like your letter saying our baby is a freak of nature. You’re an asshole. You thought I would abort my child because you didn’t want her.” She hopped off the desk, putting her hand on full hips with all of the confidence of a giant. “Royael is the most beautiful, fun, loving, energetic … She’s everything that any father would want in a child. Except for you.”
Raven fed off his guilty-as-sin façade. He no longer had that cocky allure. He had that little-fat-Liam-from-the-seventh-grade look about him. Uncertain, out of control.
“Royael deserves a better life.” Looking around the marble flooring, she remembered leaving her briefcase outside. Instead of losing momentum, she snatched a sticky note off his desk. She scribbled on it, flicking it in his general direction. “Put some money in that account for Royael.”

The name is Nicole but I sort of like to be called Amarie Avant on occasion. Both names in my pseudonym are from R&B singers, it was either that or Emeli (singer Emeli Sande). I am the bestselling author of the erotic-romantic suspense series “FEAR: Falling in Love with an Alpha Billionaire” and “The Good Mistress.” Though I do love the reviews which indicate as much. I am married with two daughters, and live in Southern California. I received dual bachelor degrees in Psychology and Child Development. Because I liked going to school and really didn’t want to go to work yet, I continued on to grad school and graduated summa cum laude with a Master’s in Counseling from Azusa Pacific University – where God comes first. I work with a colorful variety of clients as evidenced by the sociopath, yet sexy Victor D’Ross in the FEAR series, and how psychologically effed up Melody is in the story “His Melody.” When I’m not dealing with a client’s crisis or mental breakdown, I like to write about sex, love, murder, and alphas. I think highly of myself when I’m kicking the air’s ass while doing Taebo, I love the beach and deep-discount coupon shopping at Macy’s and Pier 1 Imports. I will beg like TLC for a book review, and I’m so addicted to book covers I might need to be committed. I’ve got three book covers I’m sitting on and still searching for more.
