About This Book from WaterBrook Multnomah
He fought to seek his fortune.
Would he lose a greater treasure: the love he left behind?
"As the son of the squire of Grimston Way, aristocrat Rogan Chantry has fought hard to win his independence from Sir Julien Bley and the British South Africa Company. Now, his pursuit of a mysterious deposit of gold, marked on a map willed to him by his murdered uncle, Henry Chantry, is challenged by a new complication: the impending British colonization of South Africa. Can Sir Rogan find the gold in the midst of escalating tensions among the native tribesmen, the missionaries sent to win them, and the new colonists?
Meanwhile, Evy Varley, the woman Rogan loves back in England, is headed for a brave yet dangerous confrontation with Henry’s killer–but at what price? With so much against Rogan and Evy, a reunion seems improbable, if not impossible. Can yesterday’s promise hold them faithful to the hope of future freedom and a victorious love?"
This story is the second novel in the East Of The Sun Series and because I had not had the opportunity to read the first book, I was a bit confused at first as to the story line. This second book continues the story of Evy Varley and Sir Rogan Chantry. Evy is in England and lives at the cottage on the Rookswood Estate grounds, in Grimston Way. On Allhallows Eve (October 31st),the community is celebrating recalling the "brave Christian heroes and heroines of the past who had faithfully labored for Christ". She is returning to the cottage when she is attacked by an unknown assailant inside and as a result tumbles down a flight of stairs and is severely injured. The doctors say that she may not walk again. To add to this there is the secret of Evy's birth and who is her father may be.
On the other side of the world Rogan is planning on an expedition to find the gold deposit that his uncle Henry left for him.Henry Chantry left Rogan a map of the where this gold deposit is and he is determined to find it and he also has suspicions that his uncle did not commit suicide as everyone thought and that he was murdered. There is also the mystery of the Kimberly Black Diamond, where it may be or who may have it. So between the gold and the diamond there proves to be a considerable amount of greed and avarice between the characters.
He has another uncle Sir Julien Bley, who is not a very nice man and does whatever he can to steer Rogan off the track so he can find this gold himself. Sir Julien works for the British South Africa Company. Rogan faces many challenges one of which is the impending colonization of South Africa spearheaded by the Queen of England . Rogan orginally started his trek along with a guide but was eventually coerced by Sir Julien to agree to join his own expedition. Rogan reluctantly agrees to do this but there are obstacles in the way for all, what with the tensions of the native tribesmen, who do not trust the "white" man, the missionaries and the new colonists that are also on this same expedition.
In England Evy is slowly recuperating facing the task of trying to figure out who attacked her and why and trying to come to terms that she and Rogan will never be together. There are lots of supporting characters that round out the story nicely. The story has adventure, romance and enough mystery to keep the reader guessing as to who is good or who is not.
My thoughts:
Do Evy and Rogan finally get together?? Well you will have to read this book to find out..I did enjoy the story and I think I may continue on with the series. This read is the first one I have read of Linda Lee Chaikin. Her research into the historic events of this time period was amazing. At the back of the book there is a list of historical dates that put this story in perspective. I recommend this book if you enjoy reading historical series. I look forward to the next in the series, Today's Embrace.
I received this book as part of The Value Fiction “Grab Bag” blog tour from WaterBrook Multnomah.I was not monetarily compensated for my honest review.

Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you.
