Excerpt

Chapter 1
A Moment of Appreciation

FOR SARA, COFFEE WAS ONE of lifes greatestand simplestpleasures. Every time she took a draw of freshly brewed java, her eyelids automatically lowered in appreciation of the robust flavor. Somehow, when drinking it, life seemed less complicated, or maybe it was just how it coated the palate and calmed her nerves despite what some scientific studies might say.
She was in her home office, seated behind her desk, staring at the blinking cursor on her monitor, but it wasnt because she had writers block. Her wrists needed a break. Better yet, she needed to indulge in this cup.
Leaning back in her chair, she swiveled from side to side and closed her eyes, savoring the aroma of the dark beans. While they were ground at the time she pressed the button, the only way to get it any fresher was picking the beans off the plants in Brazil. With their money, she supposed it was an option.
She let herself get caught up with the thought. It might not be a bad idea. As her daydreaming grew in scale, she laughed. She wasnt going to board a plane to South America for a cup of coffee, even though it might be the best shed ever had. She wasnt that obsessedwas she?
Sean knocked, but entered without awaiting a reply. He held on to a glass of orange juice and she admired his self-restraint. For some reason, his body required only one coffee a day when he first woke up. Otherwise, he moved on to juice or water.
If Sean had his way, Sara would drink only one, but coffee was a habit she wasnt willing to break. Maybe she was an addict, although, that word carried such a negative connotation. She wasnt an alcoholic simply because she enjoyed an evening beverage, so her coffee indulgence shouldnt be considered an addiction. Even her thoughts betrayed her. Indulgence.
Good morning, darling. Sean kissed her forehead and then her lips. I hope Im not interrupting. He glanced at the screen. I guess Im not.
She smirked at him, realizing only a chapter number was showing. Im just taking a small break. I cant always be typing, you know. Im not a machine.
The way youve been holed up in here lately, Im starting to wonder.
She pouted. Are you feeling lonely?
A little bit like a writers widower actually.
Well, let me make it up to you. She stood, cupped his face with her hands, and kissed his mouth.
When they parted, any pleasure she derived from the coffee had diluted. It was replaced by the need to hold her husband.
Hmm. Not bad, he said.
Excuse me?
You have coffee breath. I have orange juice breath. Still, the kiss, not bad.
She narrowed her eyes and was about to say something when the phone on her desk rang.
Sean answered. Helloyes, Helenall right, make the appointment for two hours from now.
As she listened to her husband speak, she had a good idea what this was about. There was a job.

Upper West Side Story by Susan Pashman Book Spotlight!

See Tour Schedule here

Book Description:

Meet Bettina Grosjean, a professor of Women’s History, and her husband, a high-ranking environmental policymaker in the New York City mayor’s office. Once a pair of student radicals, they are now raising their two brainy children on New York’s Upper West Side.

Here is the tale of their fierce parental love as it is tested in a startling eruption of racial hostility and political chicanery within the very community they have long loved and helped to build. Despite the deep love and affection they have for each other, their domestic life is suddenly thrown into crisis by a shocking and tragic event: During a school field trip, their son Max and his best friend, Cyrus, are horsing around when, in a freak accident, Cyrus falls down a flight of stairs, and dies a few days later.

The fact that Cyrus is black, that his mother is Bettina’s closest friend–that jealousy, suspicion and resentment have long been simmering in the community, and that there are powerful political forces at work as well–all conspire to reveal an ugly underbelly of the community the Grosjeans have worked so hard to fashion into a model of an enlightened, multiracial world.

Upper West Side Story is also the story of a remarkable multi-racial friendship, of two women united by their ideals and their devotion to their children, then divided by events that spiral out of control.

With cries for racial justice rising up all around our country, we must stop and consider how recent headlines are impacting our children, kids raised to believe in an America that is different from the one now showing its face.

I love Hummus and what better way to enjoy it than with Blue Diamond Almond Nut Thins? I love to eat them right out of the box. I do stick to the serving size though, recommended, because I have been dieting for over 6 months now and I have found that Blue Diamond Almond Nut thins are not only great tasting but they are great for you!. There are so many different ways to enjoy them, with cheese, fruit or a dip such as the recipe for Hummus.

About about the health benefits of Almonds:

Almonds are a source of vitamin E, copper, magnesium, and high quality protein.

Almonds also contain high levels of healthy unsaturated fatty acids in addition to a lot of bioactive molecules (such as fiber, phytosterols, vitamins, other minerals, and antioxidants) which can help prevent cardiovascular heart diseases.

Facts about the crackers:

130 calories for 16 crackers
No added wheat gluten or wheat
3 grams of protein
No cholesterol
No saturated fat

Low sodium

Ingredients

1 can chickpeas
3 tbsps extra virgin olive oil
2 tbsps fresh lemon juice
1-2 cloves of garlic
up to 1/4 of a cup water
1/2 tsp salt
2 pinches of ground cumin
a pinch of paprika for garnish

How to

To prepare this version of homemade hummus recipe without tahini, place the garlic in a food processor and mince. Add the chickpeas and lemon juice and pulse until the chickpeas are minced. Pour in the olive oil a little bit at a time, whilst pulsing, like making mayonnaise. Blend until the oil is incorporated and the hummus mixture is smooth or coarsely pureed, depending on your preference. Season with salt and cumin and pour in the water, whilst mixing. Add the water gradually and check the texture of the hummus. If your hummus is creamy and liquid enough for your taste, don’t use all the water. Check the seasonings and adjust as you like.

I received two boxes of Blue Diamond Nut Thins for my review from Blue Diamond Taste Testers.

APlusChef-Premium-Spiral-Slicer-Bundle Review

What is a Spiralizer and what do you do with it? A Spiralizer is a small double cone shaped utensil that spiralizes vegetables. Spiralizing is the art of turning vegetables and fruits into noodles. Spiralizing fruits and vegetables can help in weightloss as you incorporate more veggies and fruits into your diet. It is ecco friendly because you may just want to go to fresh fruit and vegetable markets in your local area.

Spaghetti noodles are 221 calories and 43 grams per serving, while zucchini noodles weigh in at 41.6 calories and 7.6 carbs. You can sautee the vegetable noodles in oil of choice or top with you favorite sauce, a spaghetti sauce or even a pesto.

I was given the opportunity to test the APlusChef Spiralizer from Tomoson with a free product and it is a great little tool. As you see in the picture above this is what you get. You get the spiralizer, a peeler, recipe booklet, cute little brush to aid in cleaning the spiralizer and a little black bag to keep it all in for storage.

The spiralizer was easy to use and cleanup was a breeze. I used zucchini to make the noodles. I used both blades, and found that the larger blade was perfect for the zucchini. All I did was wash the zucchini and started shredding. I did not peel it as the best nutrients are in the skin. Clean up was easy, I just rinsed it under hot water and used the little brush to clean the blades.

Features and Benefits

- Supreme sharp stainless Japanese blades which don't rust and stay sharp
- Two Julienne Sizes on either end of the product
- Very easy to use and safe thanks to the built-in guard finger protection

- Very easy to clean - dishwasher safe

This product is the only ONLY Vegetable Spiral Slicer with a Risk-Free No Hassle 100% Lifetime Money Back Guarantee.

How I prepared the zucchini for this review: I used an olive oil as that is my preferred oil to sautee with. You can also add any other vegetable to this dish like broccoli, cauliflower or shredded carrots. You can serve these vegetable 'noodles' as a side dish or a main meal.
I loved this product and will definitely be using it more as I am dieting and I love veggies! Thanks goes to Tomoson for providing the APlusChef Premium Spiral Slicer Bundle for review.

Ingredients

2 lbs. zucchini, shredded or spiralized
1 ½ tsp. kosher salt
1 tbsp. grape seed oil or any neutral olive oil
1 cup thinly sliced onion
½ tsp. lemon zest
1 tsp. fresh lemon juice
1 tsp. fresh chopped thyme

Instructions

Place zucchini shreds or spirals in a colander and mix with salt. Place into a bowl and let sit for 15 minutes.

Place zucchini in a clean towel and squeeze as much water out as you can.

In a non-stick skillet over medium heat, add oil and onions. Cook until onions start to become golden, about 15 minutes.

Add zucchini and stir fry for 2 minutes.

Take off the heat and stir in the rest of the ingredients.

Summer of Fire by Kitty Pilgrim Release Date!

The Book

When nature takes charge, sparks fly

On the beautiful island of Capri, a royal princess begins a secret love affair, oblivious to the dangers that surround her. Internationally renowned novelist Kitty Pilgrim chronicles a modern thriller based in the historic volcanic region of Southern Italy. Her characters, archaeologist John Sinclair and oceanographer Cordelia Stapleton, team up once again for a tale of glamour and romance that spans every level of society—from the dangerous criminal underworld of Naples to the jet set of Europe.

Author Q &A

How did your 24 year career as a journalist help you to start writing novels?

In the course of reporting for CNN, I had the opportunity to travel widely and research a variety of subjects. In many ways the old adage that “Truth is Stranger than Fiction” applies. The craft of reporting is not very far from the craft of storytelling. I wanted to try my hand in spinning an entertaining story from a strong factual base.

Your novels – The Explorer’s Code  and The Stolen Chalice are a great balance between a page-turner with James Bond-esque action, and an old-fashioned love story. Why was it important for you to strike that balance?

I have read a lot of popular fiction, mostly grabbing something from a shelf at the airport while heading off on assignment. I love the adventure and technical details of a good breathtaking thriller. And I also enjoy the luxury of curling up with a good old-fashioned romance. My novels are a blend of both.

Your novels take readers around the world to interesting, exotic and sometimes relatively unknown places. How do you choose particular locales for your books?

At the end of a long day, reading should be a pleasant experience. I want to make my novels escapist in the fullest sense of the word.  Both The Explorer’s Code and The Stolen Chalice have adventurous places-  such as the high Norwegian arctic, or an infectious disease unit in Cairo.  But luxury is an essential ingredient…from a glorious country estate in England, to Mediterranean cruise, to a beautiful Parisian apartment on the left bank.

Why did you decide to write about Egypt in The Stolen Chalice?

I have always been fascinated with Ancient Egypt.  Last year, in preparation for writing the novel, I had planned to travel to Cairo and visit some of the archaeological sites.  With the demonstrations in Tahrir Square I had to delay my trip until things quieted down.  Egypt was totally changed by the time I got there.  In some respects, I felt like I was back on reporting assignment again. I managed to get my research done and also pick up new information about political change in the Middle East.  More and more I am finding that there really isn’t much difference between reporting and researching a novel.

Do you always travel to each of the places you write about?

I put myself on assignment to the most beautiful glamorous and interesting places I can think of and travel to the places that I write about, so they are true to life. It comes from being a reporter. I can’t report the scene without being “on the ground.” Perhaps I lack imagination, but I think going to each place gives it authenticity that it doesn’t have if you make it up in your head.

Many of the characters in the book are explorers of some kind. You are an active member of the historic Explorer’s Club? When did you passion for exploring begin? Where does it come from?

I have always loved the whole romantic ideal of the great age of exploration. To me civilization is at its best when we go on a quest to find out more about our physical world in medecine, geology, space travel, ocean exploration.  Technology is developing so rapidly to expand our horizons.

In your novels what is fact and how much is fiction?

I try to write fact-based fiction. Many details are true to life. For example in The Stolen Chalice the finale of the book takes place at an infectious disease medical center in Cairo.  I traveled there to research how they might treat an outbreak of a biochemical attack.  In The Explorer’s Code I consulted with real scientists on the decoding of the 1918 pandemic genome, the Alvin submersible. Unless I needed to change something for purposes of plot, the descriptions and science in the book is as true to life as possible.

Are the characters based on real people?

I feel it is important to create my own characters, with their own personalities, quirks and physical characteristics and not borrow details from real people. I don’t think that is fair to the people (or the characters) to try to blend personalities. Also if I kill anyone in the course of the story, I won’t have to apologize to anyone.

Ships are often in your books. Why?

I spent a lot of time on the water.  During the summer months I am on a boat most of July and August and even do part of my book tour by boat.  I also travel frequently on Cunard ocean liners – particularly transatlantic on the Queen Mary and through the Mediterranean on the Queen Elizabeth, or the Queen Victoria. Boats are wonderful places to write.  They are quiet, peaceful and the view is wonderful.

What’s in store for you next?

I am continuing to write every day.  Sometimes I blog on my web-blog PILGRIMAGE about political situations or travel. Other times I am spinning a new fictional adventure for Sinclair and Cordelia.  There is no telling what happens next!

Stealing the Golden Dream, by Sally J. Smith and Jean Steffens

Scottsdale PIs Jordan Welsh and Eddie Marino of Shea Investigations are hired by the Arizona Heritage Museum to guard the multimillion-dollar Dahlonega Golden Dream Coin Collection. When the collection is stolen out from under them and a loved and trusted colleague is murdered, it’s a strike at the very heart of the agency. Eddie has been set up to take the fall for both crimes, so their first order of business is to clear his name. Not only is Eddie’s freedom at stake, but their business is on the line. In fact their very lives, as well as those of their loved ones, are in deadly peril.
It soon becomes clear that Eddie has been targeted because of his former association with the mob. How far over to the dark side is Jordan Welsh, society girl, willing to go to save her lover Eddie from the echoes of his criminal past?
Stealing the Golden Dream is second book in the Jordan Welsh and Eddie Marino series, which began with Stealing the Moon & Stars.

Smart and sassy. Classy with a twist of wry humor and just enough sentiment and romance to reel you in and keep you hanging until the end. Smith and Steffens, partners in crime-writing fiction, have struck gold again in Stealing the Golden Dream, the second book in the Jordan Welsh & Eddie Marino series, which began with Stealing the Moon & Stars. Their characters are so engaging and real, you’ll want to hire them next time you need a good PI team. -- Kathleen M. Rodgers, author of Johnnie Come Lately and The Final Salute

The Smith and Steffens dynamic duo have created another enjoyable read.
Blending their contemporary noir heroes with their quirky and relatable
friends and relatives, followed by a generous sprinkling of really scary bad
guys, this tight story tingles with suspense, grit, and perpetual motion.
Living in Phoenix, I enjoyed the sense of place they created that portrays
the unique character of the Phoenix and Scottsdale community. If you enjoy
romantic suspense, you will love this book.
-- Cathy Ann Rogers, author of Here Lies Buried and Deliberate Fools.

Jordan Welsh and Eddie Marino are an engaging duo, reminiscent of Castle and Beckett. Their chemistry makes this a must-read series. Smith and Steffens pen a heck of an action-packed, twisty-turny tale—they had me from page one! -- Jenn McKinlay, New York Times best selling author.

Excerpt: Stealing the Golden Dream

The image of Eddie with Sofia Vercelli was imprinted on her brain. But she had it in mind to put it aside until Eddie was in better shape. Piling more stress on top of all he was already dealing with would not only be cruel and insensitive, it would also be stupid. He was much better at a good rousing argument than she. Better to wait until things had settled down to bring up the subject—but it was definitely a matter she intended to learn more about.

Jordan made her way through the house, opened the patio door, and followed Sadie outside. She stood by the pool staring at the half-moon mirrored in the inky water. Jordan shivered in the cool breeze that rippled the reflection. March days in Scottsdale were perfect—warm, in the upper seventies, low eighties. But the evenings cooled down to the low fifties. The desert air was clean, seasoned with the faint scent of mesquite, creosote, and the chlorine in the pool.

She rubbed her bare arms. Eddie moved up behind her, slipped off his jacket and draped it around her shoulders.

He put his arms around her. “You know I wasn’t with her that night.”

“Why would she say it if it wasn’t true?”

“I’m pretty sure she figures if she does this I might take her back.”

Jordan looked up, trying to see his face, but it was cloaked in darkness.

“It’s never going to happen. I told her I’m with you now. While I don’t want anything to do with her, if her story gets me off the hook, I’ll run with it. I can’t revenge Muggs if I’m sitting in a jail cell.”

“You think I don’t know that?” Jordan said. “She’s willing to lie for you? To the cops?
She must want you back real bad.”

Eddie moved his hands to her shoulders and turned her around. “It’s all one-sided. Don’t pretend you don’t know that.” He pulled her close and kissed her hard, long, and smoking hot as Louisiana pepper sauce. It burned all the way to her toes.

Eddie, the man she was born to love. She threw herself into the kiss, and before she really knew what was happening, they’d made their way into the house and were pulling at each other’s clothes.

He took hold of one of her legs behind the knee and lifted it. She wrapped it around him as he reached under the dress and caught the edge of her panties with the curl of a finger.
