Witch’s Stone By Jamaila Brinkley Blitz!

Witch’s Stone
By Jamaila Brinkley

Blurb:
Duncan Lowell’s explosive magic is fueled by an equally explosive temper. He’s stayed away from the earldom he rules from afar to escape memories of his vicious father. But when he must return, other memories surface, too – of his childhood friend and conspirator, Fiona: the future Witch of Kilgoran.
Fiona Fanshawe has dedicated her life to the people of Kilgoran. After tragedy marred her family, she’s vowed to stay aloof, serve the village, and never marry. When Duncan arrives, demanding that she retrieve the Stone that caused her family so much pain, she’s forced to re-evaluate all of her choices.
Duncan’s demons make him fear hurting those he loves; Fiona’s make her terrified of getting hurt. Now, the witch and the earl will have to decide whether they will be more dangerous together – or apart.

Snippet 1:
“If all’s well, Fergus, I’ll be leaving here tomorrow.”
“Aye. The borders’ll be here still, though. The people, too.”
Duncan sighed. “I know.”
Fergus set his feet firmly on the ground and leaned forward, meeting Duncan’s eyes. “I might not know your Miss Fiona—”
“She’s not mine.”
“Not mine either, to my regret, but I know her blood damned well, lad, and I can tell you that you’re not leaving here tomorrow.”
“We’ll see,” Duncan said. But he knew in his heart that Fergus was right.

Snippet 2:
“I thought I’d find you here.”
Duncan’s deep voice settled into Fiona’s limbs like warm honey, and she straightened from her herb basket to find him gently lifting branches aside so that he could move into the clearing without being stung by thorns. She felt her belly tighten as he straightened to his full height and wondered which memories had drawn him here to find her. The many times they’d lain here as children, discussing their dreams and practicing simple magics? Or the very last time, when he’d kissed her here, sending confusion and delight spiraling through her limbs, and then gone thundering off to have one last, cataclysmic argument with his father before leaving for good?
She’d been so confused by all of the new feelings tumbling around inside her that she’d run straight to her most trusted ally, Gran. Only to learn that things were different for men, when it came to kissing, and things were very different for her, when it came to what might come after, especially with Duncan.

Snippet 3:
She flushed. “What I do with my life is none of your business.”
“Wrong! I’m the earl. Everyone here is my business,” he shot back.
She shoved back her chair and stood. “Well, maybe you can write me a letter and tell me all about how you think I should live my life. I hear that’s how you manage being the earl, too.” She turned, her dress whipping about her ankles, and stormed out of the room.
He leapt to his feet. “Get back here!”
“Go to hell!” Her voice echoed back through the halls and he heard the thunk of the heavy front door opening hastily, and then a slam as it closed. He wondered if she’d even touched it, or if the force of her anger had thrown the door open for her by magic. His own magic was rippling furiously under his skin, his temper seeking an outlet. He looked around, then let it flow into the candles standing ready in sconces along the wide front hallway. There was too much. His control had slipped, and he winced as he saw the two candles closest to him melt rapidly into puddles on the stone floor. Damn.
“Ermidge!”
The steward appeared from around the corner, somehow managing to appear as though he hadn’t been waiting there and listening to every word. “Yes, sir?”
“Have somebody clean that up, would you? And express my apologies in coin, please. I’m going down the hill.”
“To the cottage, sir?” Ermidge looked dubious, as well he should. Crossing a witch in a temper was generally a bad idea, particularly when you’d put her into it.
“Hell, no. I’m going to the inn.”

Prince Arthur:
When we reach the vault room, there are two guards standing at the door. Normally there is just one, sitting on the inside; but for nights like tonight, there are a total of six. I nod, and one of them opens the door.
“Good evening, fellows,” I say.
“Good evening, Your Highness.”
Once inside the room, we go through the same routine with the other four men. I go to the keypad and press the code, then hold my face in front of the camera for a retina scan. When I look down at Tessa, she actually looks impressed.
“A little Bond-esque, no?” I ask.
“Very.”
“Come on, Moneypenny, let’s get you something for that beautiful neck of yours.” I tug her hand and pull her in with me before she can say no.
She’s already shaking her head, but I hold up one finger. “I can see those Sharpe family brains of yours going to work on ten different reasons why you won’t borrow a necklace, but I have already prepared counterarguments, and since we are now twelve minutes behind schedule, please allow me. One, they’re already paid for, some of them hundreds of years ago, so it’s not coming out of anyone’s taxes. Two, like the books in the library, they’re going to waste in here. Three, for the first time in my life, I want to share something with someone else—someone who deserves to feel like a queen, even if she’ll only allow herself that for one measly little evening. Four, I have this fantasy of seeing you in only the jewels. Maybe the heels could stay.”
Tessa laughs and her cheeks go pink. “All right. One necklace, but make it a cheap one.”
I raise one eyebrow. “Define cheap.”
“Less than a kitchen stool.”
“How about less than a car?”
“Sofa.”
“I said ‘queen.’ Would a queen really wear a sofa around her neck?” I reach up and run my fingertips along the base of her neck.
“Would she wear a car?”
“Good point.” I lean down and kiss the crook of her neck. “How about this? You choose whichever one you like the best, and I won’t tell you how much it’s worth.”
I continue to brush my lips along her skin, then move up to her earlobe. The other night, I discovered a little spot at the base of her ear that turns her to putty. After a moment of some careful work, I get what I want. A breathy, little ‘okay’ escapes her lips.

MJ Summers currently resides in Edmonton, Canada, with her husband, three young children, and their goofy dog. When she's not writing romance novels, she loves reading (obviously), snuggling up on the couch with her family for movie night (which would not be complete without lots of popcorn and milkshakes), and long walks in the woods near her house. MJ also spends a lot more time thinking about doing yoga than actually doing yoga, which is why most of her photos are taken ‘from above’. She also loves shutting down restaurants with her girlfriends. Well, not literally shutting them down, like calling the health inspector or something. More like just staying until they turn the lights off.
MJ is a member of the Romance Writers of America, as well as the International Women's Writing Guild.
MJ would love to hear from you! She does her best to respond to all inquiries and emails personally. If you would like her to attend a book club meeting via Skype please contact her to book a date.

*The Crown Jewels Series is a light romantic comedy, very heavy on the laughs with a low steam level (but lots of delicious sexual tension and some swearing). This is a HFN ending with the second and third books in the series featuring the same couple.
Book 2: The Royal Wedding (Summer 2017)
Book 3: The Royal Delivery (Late Fall 2017)

Forests of the Fae: The Raven Queen
By K. Kibbee
Genre: YA Fantasy

A summer spent untangling a century-old mass disappearance, communing with ghosts, fleeing dark Fae Folk, and enduring her nefarious cousin Lexie would seem like tribulation enough for 13-year-old Anne, and yet her struggles have only just begun.

Though she’s closed Devlin’s Door behind her, something sinister has followed Anne from the other side. Her dearest friend Grace is not as she would seem. Something dark has taken hold of the girl . . . something not of this world. Ravens surround her, people mindlessly do her bidding, and wickedness drips from her lips. It’s only a matter of time before Anne uncovers her secret and with it, her vengeance.

Meanwhile, somewhere deep in the Forests of the Fae, the real Grace struggles to retain her humanity and escape the revolting Faerie body that imprisons her. With pet raven Onyx at her side, she is heralded a Queen, and worshiped by the very creatures that she despises.  Set atop a throne of thorns, she feels all is lost, until a stranger with human eyes and a sorted past is shackled at her feet.

Though worlds apart, both girls must race against time if they hope to unravel the mysteries of the Fae folk and unmask The Raven Queen.

Q&A from the author!Tell us about your genre.  How did you come to choose it?  Why does it appeal to you?
Well, it seems a little pompous to call it my genre, but the ‘Forests of the Fae’ series would probably be best fit into the YA fantasy genre. I’ve always been drawn to all things fantastical, so it’s a natural fit for me. I simply adore writing about wondrous worlds and magical places. My brain is a cornucopia of oddities, and it’s almost a relief to let some of them escape every now and again.
What do you find most challenging about the writing process, and how do you deal with it?
It’s an adage that’s been repeated by many writers but I echo it with complete sincerity—the hardest part about writing is . . . well . . . writing. Just breaking away from the daily hubbub of life and convincing oneself to sit down and put pen to page (or, these days, fingertips to keyboard) can be a genuine challenge. It’s so easy to get into the tomorrow, tomorrow, I’ll do it tomorrow refrain and before you know it, tomorrow is never.
When and where do you do your writing?
I can write in a car. I can write in a bar. I can write on the subway. I can write any which-way! So long as I have a good set of ear plugs—just add coffee and a laptop, and I’m good to go!
What have you learned about promoting your books?
I can’t recall when or where it was that I read it—but when I came across the statistic that being a successful author is something like 20% writing and 80% marketing, I was aghast. Unfortunately, my writerly travels have proven just that. There are SO many amazing, talented writers out there who are vying for the same prize that you’ve really got to hustle to make your work seen. Now don’t get me wrong . . . if it’s drivel, all the marketing in the world won’t save it. It’s got to be good. VERY good. But even VERY good work needs aggressive promotion or it’s liable to end up in mothballs.
What are you most proud of as a writer?
Oddly enough, I’d say that I’m most proud of my battle scars. In my youth I often lamented my lack of success. I wanted to be that fresh-faced 18-year-old who ended up on the NYT Bestseller list with her debut novel. I went through a fair share of pouting when that didn’t happen. Then I pouted even harder when I realized that even a nod from a small, indie publisher probably wouldn’t come to pass. But after all that pouting and self-loathing, I pulled on my big girl panties and got to work. If it’s in you—this writer’s soul---it won’t be silenced easily. It may whine and fuss and make a dramatic spectacle of itself, but in the end, it will keep you going. And when you keep going and GOING and GOING, eventually you come out the other side a more seasoned and accomplished writer—with some pretty impressive scars to show for your travels.
If you could have dinner with any writer, living or dead, who would it be and what would you talk about?
I’m probably the umpteenth writer to drop this name but I’d be fibbing if I gave a different one . . . so . . .  J.K. Rowling. That gal just impresses the heck out of me and the altruistic acts she’s performed by benefit of her success are beyond admirable. She’s talented, witty, diligent, and one smart cookie. I’ll always take cookies for dinner. ;)
As to topics of conversation . . . c’mon—it’s J.K. Rowling. You talk about whatever she wants to talk about!
