The Making Of… “The Viking’s Witch” (Part 2)
By Kelli A. Wilkins

Hi everyone,

I’m pleased to announce the release of my latest historical romance. The Viking’s Witch is set in Celtic Scotland and blends a sensual love story with adventure and paranormal elements.
In my last blog, I discussed how the book came about, the research involved, and the conflicts that take place in the story. Now I’ll give readers insight into the origins and development of the characters, as well as Odaria’s magic “witch” powers.

The Viking’s Witch is a traditional historical romance with paranormal elements set in Scotland in 803 A.D. The heroine, Odaria, is what they called a witch back then—nowadays we’d call her a psychic and a healer. Here’s the plot summary:

The Viking’s Witch
Scotland, 803 A.D.
About to be burned at the stake by her fellow villagers, Odaria does what any betrayed witch facing certain death would do. She calls down a curse. Within seconds, rampaging Norsemen raid the village, capturing everyone except her.
But her reprieve is short-lived, and Odaria lands in the clutches of the Norse leader Rothgar. Can she remain true to herself and fight her growing attraction to this domineering man, or will she fall under his influence and be used for his ambitions?
After Rothgar witnesses Odaria’s powers firsthand, he strikes a bargain with her. The raven-haired beauty will use her magical abilities to help him with his quest in exchange for safe passage off the isle. But can this cunning woman be trusted, or is she using him to exact vengeance on her village?
Together they must fight bloodthirsty villagers, battle a mutinous band of Norsemen, find a missing Norse ship, and learn to trust each other…before time runs out.
***
Interviewers have asked me how I can create such interesting and diverse characters for all of my books. They want to know where Rothgar and Odaria came from. Well, there’s no real way to answer that other than, I just made them up. (Chris Hemsworth from Thor is pretty much what I envisioned Rothgar to look like—even though I wrote the book long before the movie came out!)

When I create my heroes and heroines I always give them “baggage” and flaws—along with problems to overcome. This way, they can grow and change over the course of the book. Odaria is a strong-willed “witch” who is tired of being abused and ridiculed by the people in her village. She swears she doesn’t need anyone’s help to get by. Rothgar was once a powerful warrior, but a personal tragedy has softened him and left him broken and unwilling to love anyone again.

When they first meet, they each play off the others’ weaknesses. Odaria has no qualms about standing up to Rothgar and arguing with him, and he respects her willful and fearless behavior. Eventually they realize that they need (and want) to be with each other forever.

I like to introduce secondary characters and subplots into my books to flesh out the story. I’m often asked about the secondary Norse character, Nordskog. He’s not the type of “hero” one would typically find in a romance, but he serves an important role in the story. Where did he come from? Well…

I used to work with a woman whose last name was Nordskog and I told her that one day I’d use her name in a book, so I did! Nordskog is a violent, vicious berserkr and has a history with Rothgar dating from Rothgar’s old fighting days. Nordskog’s hatred of Karnik draws him closer to Rothgar’s side as the story develops. After Odaria helps heal his leg, Nordskog displays a protective fondness for her, as well. He’s an impulsive brute, but he’s not stupid. He knows that Rothgar is wealthy and will reward him for his services and loyalty.

But if readers thought Nordskog was bad, the antagonist, Brennan, is even worse.

Brennan has been described by one reviewer as “a perfectly evil villain” which was exactly my intention. I wanted to portray him as an arrogant, self-righteous SOB—but not have his character be too over-the-top. Brennan is a lying, murdering, religious zealot—and that makes him dangerous to Odaria and the other villagers.

Most of the terrible things Brennan’s done happen off-page and we learn about them through Odaria. Each time I wrote a scene for, or about, Brennan, I made him a little more unstable and psychotic, so by the end of the book readers see that he needs to learn his lesson and pay for what he’s done.

Odaria’s “magic” is the catalyst that sets the story in motion and helps bring about Brennan’s demise. When the book opens, Odaria is about to be burned alive for being a witch. She calls down a spell and curses the villagers while unknowingly invoking a Viking raid. Or so it seems…

Odaria uses her “powers” for self-preservation and to get revenge on the people who hurt her. Rothgar doesn’t believe in her “magic” and thinks she’s merely pretending to be a witch to frighten people. But after a highly-charged interaction with Brennan, Rothgar gets a taste of what Odaria could really do if she set her mind to it.

I loved showing readers (and Rothgar) Odaria’s powers of clairvoyance, telekinesis, and psychometry. The scenes that included the “magic” elements were a lot of fun to write. I’ve always been interested in psychic phenomena and other New Age/paranormal subjects, so it was easy for me to incorporate what I know into Odaria’s character.

I hope you enjoyed Part Two of this “inside look” at The Viking’s Witch. I’m happy to say that readers and reviewers fell in love with the characters and the book has received dozens of excellent reviews. (And it also won a Gold IPPY Award for best romance ebook!)

Here’s a mini-excerpt from The Viking's Witch:
Odaria entered the gathering hall and mounted the stairs two at a time. Her lower body tingled and throbbed, craving Rothgar’s touch. She imagined his strong hands squeezing and stroking her as his hot mouth covered her breasts.
She raced into the bedchamber, lit a candle, and straightened the blankets on the bed. Now what? Should she undress and lie down? Should she wait and let Rothgar strip her? Did men like that, or would Rothgar rather find her nude and ready?
As eager as she was to make love, the thought of finally being deflowered set her nerves on edge. What if she did something wrong? How would she know how to pleasure Rothgar? No one had ever told her the secrets of lovemaking.
“There’s no need for me to be nervous,” she whispered as she paced the room. Even from inside the gathering hall, she could still hear the party in the courtyard. The music seemed to have gotten louder, and the men were cheering and singing. She went to the window and peered out. Two groups of men were tugging on a long length of rope, each trying to pull the other group down.
“I hope I haven’t kept you waiting too long,” Rothgar said from the doorway.
She turned from the window. “I wasna sure if I should take off me dress or—”
“I’ll take care of everything.” Rothgar locked the door behind him, then removed his tunic. “Come to me, my little witch.”

Saturday 10th May, 1941
The Messerschmitt Bf 110 night fighter continued to fly westward, no more than a few hundred feet off the ground. The pilot had flown over Alnwick Castle more than half an hour before and he knew he had to be close to his destination by now. He became more anxious with each minute that passed, straining to see through the darkness, willing the landing lights to come into view.

Finally, he saw them. He climbed to ensure he cleared a group of hills he had memorized from his map, and as the plane leveled out he could see the landing strip in the distance. A faint double line of lights marked the RAF emergency landing ground, and the pilot breathed out again. Almost there. The plan was for him to approach from the west to provide a safer landing for the twin-engined aeroplane. He overflew Dungavel House and headed towards the coast. A few minutes later he crossed the Clyde coast over West Kilbride. The plane circled above the wide estuary and released its two 900-litre drop-in fuel tanks which had provided the extra capacity needed for the flight from Bavaria. The pilot then turned east once more, flying over the southern outskirts of Glasgow on the approach to the landing strip.

Except the landing strip had gone. He couldn’t see the lights. Were they obscured by trees? He strained every sinew as he willed them to come back into view. He had to think fast. Should he abort the mission? It was too late for that, he had already gone beyond the point of no return. With the drop tanks gone there was no guarantee, he’d have enough fuel to reach Aldergrove. There was nothing else to do, he had to continue as planned. The lights had definitely been there before, perhaps there was a fault in the electrics? He had to take the gamble that they were still waiting for him. But he couldn’t risk a landing in pitch dark. Not only would it be impossible to gauge the height from the ground on approach, there was every chance of hitting a tree.

The pilot came to a grim decision. He pulled the column back and climbed into the night sky. Once the plane leveled out again, he opened the cockpit canopy. He undid his harness and tried to pull himself out of his seat but the air pressure prevented him from doing so. He realized that there was no alternative but to turn the plane upside down and literally fall out of the plane.

He rolled the plane onto its back and this time gravity overcame the air pressure and he fell out of the cockpit. As he cleared the fuselage, his ankle caught the tail of the Messerschmitt and a searing pain shot through his foot. He pulled his parachute cord and briefly lost consciousness. The cold night air quickly caused him to regain his senses and he heard the explosion as his plane crashed into the countryside below. He could make out the dark outline of the ground rushing to meet him and several seconds later he hit the earth hard and tumbled over and over.

It was shortly before midnight and Rudolf Hess, deputy leader of Germany’s Nazi party, had arrived in Scotland.

Their combined 'Autobiographical/How-To' guidebook weaves a humorous, tender, uplifting, and critically insightful fabric of 10 foundational principles upon which any family may confidently build. Every blended family can have happier, more fulfilling lives where disruption, disorientation, and contention are replaced by teamwork, progress, and overcoming-oriented achievement.

Causes of Miscommunication in Blended Families (but applies to all families in general)

Excerpt from Living in the Family Blender: 10 Principles of a Successful Blended Family by Clark and Leah Burbidge

Blended families can have additional issues that overlay all communication. These can create tension, fragile interaction, and false expectations regarding predisposed reactions that are not reality. Countless volumes have been written on the subject of effective communication. Our goal here is to provide some ideas regarding how we have wrestled this alligator in our blended family.

Miscommunication in our family most often occurs when the following circumstances are present:

1.  We are more interested in formulating our next response than listening to what is being said.
2.  We voice our comment or statement then cut off responses by saying we don’t want to talk about it or by walking away or shutting the door. We call this shutting down the conversation or person.
3.  We are distracted by other thoughts or activities and don’t pay close enough attention.
4.  We prejudge or anticipate certain responses that are not, in fact, reality.
5.  We have pre-formulated opinions and jump in with a quick answer or talk over the other person before we know what was going to be said.
6.  We try to fix the problem when all the person wants is someone to listen.
7.  We fail to ask enough questions to clarify what is being communicated.
8.  We convey our thoughts or responses in words or a tone that causes a defensive reaction rather than promoting listening.
9.   We read things into the conversation that are not intended.
10. We are impatient and try to rush the conversation.
11. We commandeer the conversation, inadvertently robbing them of title to their own thinking and problem-solving process.
12. We internally demean the intelligence or worth of the speaker thereby giving ourselves permission to ignore what is said.

The point is that there are numerous ways to shut down or promote communication. Leah has a gift for drawing the true feelings out of our children in their own comfort zone. She can seamlessly slide back and forth between right-brained general creative communication and a left-brained specific task and schedule-oriented communication. Clark possesses the ability to communicate on different levels as well, but usually, he must make a conscious decision regarding the general and specific discussions.

We have children of both types in our blended family. Some tend toward the artistic and chafe when they have structure, schedules or study plans that need to be addressed in specific. Others will immediately organize the schedule with times and objectives. Both types can then fail to think outside the box, frequently setting themselves up for unexpected headbanging and frontal assaults when sudden change occurs.

In addition, our children’s approach to life can bounce back and forth, depending on situational demands. As a result, our blended family communication has required us to develop nimble and flexible strategies. We manage the delicate balance through actively listening and understanding. We must walk that fine line and not irritate a child by pushing for too many specifics when they think they are done with the conversation. There will always be another opportunity to reinforce a point. On the other hand, we cannot back off too early without raising questions they at least need to think about.

We have previously discussed the value of showing your children and spouse respect. Listening to understand naturally demonstrates that respect. Children must know that you appreciate where they are coming from, respect their position, and value their thoughts. In doing so, parents are more likely to find that children will listen to their advice. Most of what we have discussed is common sense that can be patiently and effectively employed in relationships. However, there are outside distractions that can severely challenge a blended family’s ability to communicate.

About the Authors: Clark and Leah Burbidge are 14 years into their blended family experience and loving life more than ever with ten children with their eight spouses, eight grandchildren, and counting. Their practical ‘autobiographical/how to’ guide is contained in a new Gold Medal award-winning book, Living in the Family Blender: 10 Principles of a Successful Blended Family, July 2019 – Deep River Books.

The Author
Jenny O’Brien was born in Dublin a very long time ago. From an early age she’d always hoped to write something; to write anything other than her name on the bottom of a cheque and then, with the introduction of automated banking she even lost that pleasure.  Therefore she was forced to pick up a pen and pad and start scribbling and since then she’s never stopped. She writes in most genres except horror, sci-fi and fantasy. The Stepsister, released in 2018 was her first thriller and no one could have been more surprised than her when it stuck in the Amazon bestseller chart for 5 weeks and that with no paid advertising.
Apart from writing there’s little room left. she’s an avid reader of most genres and can always be found with a book or six knocking around.  Her reading taste is an eclectic one with the classics, and literary giants nestling up beside category romances. For her forthieth birthday she asked for built-in book shelves instead of diamonds, which probably says a lot…She has never watched an episode of Downton Abbey or read any book with 50 in the title for that matter so she’s probably quite boring. She does tend to spend a lot of time talking to her imaginary friends who are always there knocking about in her head keeping her out of mischief. She also loves hearing from anyone who’s interested in talking books; either hers, theirs or others. She’s on Twitter (too much) as Scribblerjb and has a Facebook page here, which is usually woefully out of date.

My Review
Izzy Grant had a horrible thing happen to her. Her baby daughter, Alys, disappeared with the baby's father. Everyone thought, how could her partner do this and why?? She is haunted for five years, her life almost ruined. She gets on with her life though, starts a small business and continues on the best she can. Then she sees a woman that she had befriended during her pregnancy. They went through the birthing classes together. Why is Grace suddenly back in town? The police, Rhy and Gaby is brash and dedicated, when the police force have stopped searching, she is determined to find out what happened to Alys and her father.

I found this book to be very well written, suspenseful and I kept wanting more. I did not expect the ending, to me that is the best that an author can do. Not let the reader figure it out. I hope to read more by this author! This author definitely has a future if she keeps writing. Plus I liked that it took place in Wales! I give it four stars!
