Married to the Lord by Samantha Holt Book Blitz!

Married to the Lord
Samantha Holt
(The Wallflower Brides, #2)
Publication date: September 9th 2019
Genres: Adult, Historical, Romance

Waiting for one’s fiancé to set a date is never fun. Especially when it has now officially been years. Particularly when one is a veritable wallflower with little chance of anything better coming along. More so when said fiancé’s brother is paying particular attention to one’s life and causing all sorts of confusing emotions.
All Miss Augusta Snow wants is for Evan to return home and set the date. If that means trying as hard as she can to break out of her quiet temperament to gain his attention, then she’ll do her best.
But it seems she’s attracted the wrong brother’s attention…
The brooding Miles Stanton, Viscount Ashwick has always been quietly fascinating to her. She knows he was a little less than a gentleman in his past but she cannot help be intrigued now that he is showing interest in her wellbeing.
He only intended to protect his brother’s interests…
Miles always had a soft spot for Gus. However, everyone knew she was meant for his brother and all he wants is for her to be happy—especially with the specters of his past hanging over him and guaranteeing to bring trouble. He has to protect Augusta from doing something silly and somehow persuade Evan to cease being a fool and return home.
All the while ignoring his feelings for her…
Augusta’s plans to show Evan that she is not just some dull wallflower seemed doomed to fail and now Miles is back in her life and behaving…well…strangely. She cannot help but wonder if she has been hanging her hopes on the wrong brother this whole time.
EXCERPT:
They strolled in silence for a while. A gentle breeze brushed the ribbons of her bonnet, sending them curling around her face. She swept them aside with a little annoyed grunt and Miles tucked his hands behind his back to resist the temptation of sorting them out for her. When they came to where the path branched off and too far away from the party for their time together to be proper, Miles stopped. Augusta looked at him expectantly with dark eyes that made him wonder if she could see inside his soul—see quite how dirty and black it was. Though, she should have figured that out by now. There were few good men who would kiss their brother’s fiancé.
“I must apologize for that night…”
She blinked at him. “What night?”
The words hurt, jabbing straight into his heart like a pointed spear. Surely she remembered?
He cleared his throat. “The night where I…uh…kissed you.”
“Oh.”
Her lips formed a lovely ‘o’ shape that made him want to take her face in his hands again and kiss her until he had her knees trembling and her body capitulated to him. Damn it. He shouldn’t have walked this far or taken this long to gather his courage. It would be far too easy to slip off somewhere without anyone noticing. He could dirty her skirts and muss her hair to his heart’s content.
God, he really was a cad.
“Anyway, I wanted you to know that I regret that action. Deeply. You…you are my brother’s fiancé.” His throat tightened over those last words. “Even if you were not, to kiss you like that, in public…it was utterly unacceptable.”
“I see.”
“You do not forgive me?” He shook his head and smiled. “Of course you do not. And I have no right to expect it.” He eyed her. “Gus, how is it you can make a man feel even more heartily ashamed of himself with but two words?”
“I do not mean to make you feel ashamed, I swear it.” She plucked a leaf from a nearby tree and twined it between her fingers, keeping her gaze lowered.
“I think perhaps you take a little pleasure in it.”
She lifted her head. “You tease me!” She flung aside the leaf. “You know I would never take pleasure in such a thing.”
“Perhaps.” He gave a half-smile. “But at least then I get a response from you.”

A Perfect Eye by Stephanie Kane Book Review!

Some are born with a perfect palate, others with perfect pitch.

Denver Art Museum’s Conservator of Paintings Lily Sparks was born with a perfect eye. When the museum’s billionaire benefactor is brutally murdered, the grisly tableau stuns her: it’s the human embodiment of the museum’s prized landscape by famed Impressionist Gustave Caillebote.

Lily comes to believe the Caillebotte was forged and the killer is a painter the art world spurned. But as she confronts where art ends and fraud begins, she must face the deceptions in her own past.

My Thoughts

"Your Eye's like a perfect pitch, he said. You're lucky you were born with it" Lily's father told her when she was young. Lily Sparks is the Conservator of Paintings at the Denver Art Museum and her focus is on Fields of the Gennevilliers Plain, a painting by Gustave Caillebotte because the painting was lost for over a century but she believes that the painting is most likely forged.

George Kurtz, the museum's benefactor is found murdered, split in two. She finds the scene fascinating. Kurtz was everiscated with his intestines were smeared on the wall behind where Kurts was sitting, what is strange about that? Well, it imitated the painting. Pretty gory right?

The story also involves a past boyfriend  FBI agent Paul Riley, there is still an attraction but she does not know is she should pursue it. She is too busy though trying to convince Paul to her theory on the murder. Another important character is her father Harry, her mother died when Lily was too young to remember. As the story continues, she finds that what she was told when she was young was a lie and that her father may be in danger along with herself.

What ensues is a great mystery story that is page-turning. Lily's "eye" and intuition makes this story a great mystery. Loved the characters especially Lily! I loved the story and actually finished it in a few hours.

Shane walked Avery to the parking lot, holding her hand the entire way, long after the group could no longer see them. When they reached the car, he turned to her and said, “Thank you for today. I had fun with you.”
“Yeah, me too.” She was starting to soften, and knew she had to pull herself together. “Tomorrow it’s back to business as usual. No need to keep up the fake relationship after everyone leaves.”
“Unless you wanted to?” he asked with a hopeful grin.
“There’s no use in pretending to be something we’re not unless it evolves to that. Let’s just take it one day at a time and see where this takes us.”
“Well then, I’ll see you in the morning, boss. I’ll be ready for you to put me to work.”
“See you then,” Avery turned and began to open the door to her car, but she felt Shane push it shut. As she turned to face him to see what he was doing, he leaned in and pinned her gently against the car with his body. One hand on the door, he leaned in as if he were going to kiss her. With his other hand, he brushed his thumb along her bottom lip.
“What are you doing?” she tried to whisper, but her voice cracked.
“I’ve been dying to kiss you, Ave.” His voice was low, his breath warm against her cheek, as he leaned in to whisper in her ear, “Ever since I got here, I’ve wanted nothing more than to feel your lips on mine.”
“Shane …” she started, but her voice trailed off. Her legs were getting weaker and weaker. She was running out of fight with this man.
“Just one kiss, Avery,” he whispered softly. “And then we’ll know.”
Her eyes fell to his lips, so close to her own, and she began to close her eyes. She did want the kiss, more than anything. But she didn’t want her heart to break all over again. She wanted to be certain this could work before they took it too far. She straightened her back, placing a hand on his chest to create space between them. “I already know, Shane.”
Before he could say anything more, she leaned forward and dusted a kiss to his cheek. She turned and opened the car door, whispering a brief goodbye before she got in and backed out of her parking spot, leaving Shane alone to watch her tail lights disappear in the distance.

EXCERPT:
As I ventured outside, the police scanner burst into life. “All units, move into Sixth Street, a murder has been reported.” Just another murder I suppose, but Sixth Street is just around the corner, worth having a look at the very least.
It wasn’t long before I reached Sixth Street to find police cars everywhere. They all had guns loaded and aimed at the door. So much force to deal with just one killer if you ask me. I hung back far away, but still close enough to eavesdrop on their conversations.
“Did you see what happened?” one of the cops was asking his friend.
“Is it the same killer?”
“I believe so, I’ve never seen someone jump that high! You saw that, right?”
The cops were sweating. It could be the beast; it could be that these two were morons. Silence loomed for but a moment before a loud cry came from inside. A woman was screaming.
This was my cue. I dashed through them so fast they must have thought it was the wind. They were startled. “What the hell!” one of them shouted.
“Stay there,” I shouted as I barged inside. It is said that certain animals can smell fear because the body releases a substance that would normally be undetectable by humans. Well, us vampires can smell that too. I can almost hear the ‘so you are an animal, is what you’re saying?’ joke, and yes, in some aspect we are.
I paused only when I got to the living room. The woman was literally in the claws of another person…or a vampire anyway. He was much taller than her, and I could smell the cheap cologne on him. “What are you doing!?” I asked him.
“You, you’re a vampire like me,” he said in that strange French accent. Disgusting being. There are rules in our society for this, we do not engage humans in their world. “Come, friend, join me and have a drink,” he invited as he tilted her neck and exposed a portion of her veins that seemed so rich with blood.
“I don’t partake,” I said to him as I squinted my eyes a little. “There are rules, you imbecile.”
“Fuck the rules,” he said as he began to move her left and right. “The Beast is on the loose, so all these humans are fair game, it’s like open season on them!” I could honestly understand the feelings of being trapped in a cage underground. We are far superior to humans, yet it is us who are forced to live in hiding.
But something about him irritated me to the point where I think my blood was boiling. The blatant disregard for authority. He was the embodiment of everything my father hates, well if he were still alive anyway.
I pushed forward, and in the blink of an eye I had the vampire by the throat. He struggled to breathe, and let the woman go. “It’s open season, only when I say so.”
“Fortier! My goodness, it is really you!” he began to say as he struggled to free himself from my grip. I could see the fight fade away as he began to realize just who was standing before him. I let him go, and he squealed on all fours gasping for air.
Then his gasps calmed down and he began to laugh hysterically. What a sight to behold. I didn’t understand much of his reaction to tell you the truth, but I had another concern right now. The woman kept staring at me for a cold minute, and when my eyes shifted towards her, she began to tear up. “I won’t tell anyone, I swear.”
I was inclined to believe her, but that really was a risk I couldn’t take. This is about more than one human, more than one vampire.
“I believe you,” I said before I snapped her neck. Bodies don’t tell stories.
That lunatic began laughing more and more. He was really getting on my nerves now. “You realize you are going to die, don’t you?” I said to him, but that didn’t startle him in the least sense. It felt more like he was expecting it . . . no, accepting it.
“This world is doomed. You against the Beast… oh he knows about you, Fortier. In fact, he’s counting on you finding him,” the heathen said as he plucked up enough nerve to try to stand on his knees.
“I’m afraid you won’t live long enough to see that,” I said as I tilted my head a little. I took a few steps closer to him. The closer I got, the steadier his beats grew. Something was unnerving him, he appeared unfazed but deep within the charade I knew he feared death as much as anyone.
“Kill me, Fortier, I won’t tell you anything,” he said in that weird accent of his, but that was the least of my worries. His breath smelled of aged garlic, how biblical. I stared him in the eye. I don’t know how I resisted that awful smell, but I lunged my hand and pierced through his chest. His beating heart laid fresh in my palm.
“You don’t have to,” I replied.

Author Bio –
Shelley Clarke was born into a naval family in Kent in 1958, and consequently moved house a lot as a child. She had ambitions to follow in her father's footsteps and join the Royal Navy, and to become a carpenter, but these were not female occupations at that time. So she learned to type... which has come in jolly handy for putting her stories first onto paper, and now onto screen.
Shelley is a keen painter, poet, and karaoke enthusiast; she loves mad family get-togethers, hates olives, ironing and gardening, and currently lives in Devon with her husband Kev, and their two Tibetan Terriers Nena and Pepi, who make them smile every day. Shelley often forgets she is a grown-up.
Children of Sinai is Shelley's debut novel. The story had been bouncing around her head for many years, and putting it down on paper has been the hardest thing she's ever had to do. She certainly could not have got through this experience without a lot of cursing and chocolate!

After successfully winning a number of high profile cases, he is building a reputation among Soho’s criminal classes as a man who gets the job done, a reputation that doesn’t endear him to his establishment colleagues.

When his philandering wife Henrietta is found with her throat slashed, Charles finds himself on the wrong side of the law and in serious trouble of the murderous kind. Arrested for her murder, can Charles discover the truth of her brutal slaying and escape the hangman’s noose?

My family came to England in 1492, refugees from the Spanish Inquisition, and remained in the East End of London for the next 450 years. London is in my blood and as will be seen from my current series of novels, is an important character in its own right.

I practiced as a barrister (trial attorney)for 35+ years, doing all sorts of criminal cases, including murder, which now form the plots of my books. I include actual court documents not usually seen by the public.

I was published in the UK and the US in the late 1980s and early 1990, but my books were dropped in the middle of a 2-book deal when Virgin Books bought out WH Allen and I stopped writing for public consumption for 25 years. I still wrote – as I think all authors have to, to keep sane – but then in 2016 I decided to give up the day job and have another go at doing professionally the thing I loved most.

I was picked up almost immediately by Urbane Publications and my former agent, Lisa Eveleigh, and the first two books of the Charles Holborne series have now been published, with the third due out 8 June 2017. I have three children (theatre director, actor and school student respectively). I was one of the founder members and last year the co-chairman of the Ampthill Literary Festival.

My Review
The Brief by Simon Michael is a legal thriller that takes place in the '60s, a British whodunnit. The British are known to tell a great story, especially the mysteries. This one is no exception. A story of crime and corruption right in the legal system.

Barrister Charles Holborne is not a popular person, as he is a Jewish East Ender, not wanted in the "prestigious Establishment profession". He gets a high profile case that he hopes will help turn around his life. But when his wife is murdered, he becomes a suspect and he must run for his life, trying to find out who the killer is. He gets the help of a clerk in the office that he works in to help him as he has nowhere else to go but to her.

A good British mystery is one that keeps you guessing until the end. The characters were well written and the British legal system explained so it was more understandable. I liked this book and do want to read the next one in the series as I think that The Brief is a good start to the series. Loved it as I love a great British mystery!

I received a copy to the book for review purposes only.

Excerpt-

Jacob Rothberg was eighty years young, still presiding behind the counter, barking orders at the youngsters who worked there. They jumped when he told them what to do, but you could see their affection for him. Kind of like their surly on the outside but sweet on the inside grandpa.
Heck, he treated all of us that way. Zellie and I have known him since we were kids. Although neither of us ever worked for him, he treated us like we were his former employees, and we
indulged his whimsy.

“See those two people?” he barked at one of the two boys working behind the counter. “No not there, numbskull, over there.” He pointed right at us. “Two of my best employees. If you could do one tenth of what they did behind this very counter, you’d own the place in a year. You’d kick me right out. Right out that door. I could just retire to Florida.”

Retired government attorney Eric Small began writing a cozy mystery series featuring the investigations and adventures of Arnie and Zellie in their fledgling detective agency, set in the environs of Middletown, New Jersey. Brazen Gambit was the first in the series, and A Tale of Two Freddies continues from where that left off. Eric grew up in Middletown, and now lives in Florida with his wife, to whom he’s been married for over thirty years.
