Excerpt
He pedaled the bicycle hard and fast down the narrow, deserted alley, stealing glances behind him. It was a late, warm Friday afternoon somewhere on the eastside of Los Angeles where police protection was scarce and hoodlums plentiful. Two and three-story buildings huddled together on both sides of the rider. Graffiti stained the walls.
Hunched over the handlebars, the cyclist whizzed past a dented metal dumpster, unsettling newspapers and milk cartons pressed against a doorway. The collar of a gingham dress shirt stuck up beneath his red pullover and a backpack flopped behind him. Chuck Taylors clinched his nerdiness, as did the argyle socks. He looked fresh out of a computer lab, on his way to the library. There was nothing unusual about him, if you didn’t count the bulging eyes, gritted teeth and heavy panting. His expression belonged on a trapped animal.
A black sedan barreled around the corner, tires grinding and coughing up pieces of asphalt. Leaning his torso out of the passenger window, a muscular guy in a white T-shirt clutched a revolver. He aimed at the cyclist, fired three times and missed.
The rider angled around a corner and skidded to a stop. Dropping the bicycle on its side, he stumbled over the upturned wheel moments before the car crushed the bike beneath its fat tires, spitting out a tangle of metal and chrome. The car parked, and two thugs spilled out. They
raced after the cyclist, guns drawn. The nerd careened toward the side of a brick building and jumped up, arms outstretched above his head. The silver cuff around his wrist glinted as he grabbed the bottom rung of a fire escape ladder, legs flailing wildly. The ladder creaked and swayed. He’d barely started the climb when the hoodlums fired. And missed again.
“Oh, brother,” I whispered.
The nerd scrambled onto a landing and dove through an open window.
“Cut,” a gruff voice rang out.
“No one’s going to believe this,” I muttered.
“No one’s going to believe this,” I muttered.
“Do you mind?”
I stood apart from the assorted movie crew and onlookers, but one lanky guy hovered behind my shoulder, his arms crossed against his chest. His sun baked face turned a shade of red that complemented the brick building behind me. The guy lowered his shades along the bridge of his nose to get a better look at me.
“Do you have any idea what ‘quiet on the set’ means?” His words tumbled out through clenched teeth.
“I spoke after you yelled, ‘cut’. And I was talking to myself.” It didn’t add to my credibility, but it was the truth.
“You were mumbling the whole time.”
“Well, I couldn’t help it. The scene wasn’t realistic,” I told him.
“We’re not shooting a documentary here,” he said.
“But there’ll be people like me watching who’ll know. You just can’t squeeze out bullets like a squirt gun.” I was new to my lawyer gig at the movie studio, but not so new to PI work and guns. Thanks to my father. “It’s hard to miss at such close range.”
“How would you know?” He glared my way. “Did I hire you? Do you even work here?” He gave me a slow once over and squinted at the badge on my chest.
My tailored, sea green sheath dress and three-inch pumps had to give me some status. Even my usual tangle of hair had cooperated into a French twist. That was a first. I was a female force to be recognized.
“Carrie what?” His squint still pinned to my badge.
“Corrie. Corrie Locke. I work on the business side of the studio.”
“Is that so?” His lips turned inward. “Well, mind your own business. You should not be judging the fake shooting ability of my actors. This wasn’t even the final take.” He lifted his manicured chin and his voice. “I want her removed from the set.” His finger pointed to my head.
“Is this a comedy?” I asked. “Because that scene might work if it is.”
“It’s dead serious. As in police drama serious. Viewers are going to flock to this film. Know why? Because it’s going to be a highly watchable murder mystery.”
“Maybe the cyclist could be wounded. Even a surface wound would do.”
He looked around and yelled, “Why is she still here?”
I was now working on the main lot of Ameripictures Studios in Culver City, a town steeped in Southern California movie-making history. I’d been relocated nearly a month ago from a production arm in Newport Beach. A trouble free month, I might add. Unlike the stint in Newport, I’d avoided private investigation work completely on the main lot. My trouble free streak was going strong. Until now.
A tall guy in a loose shirt and baggy shorts hustled in my direction. I turned on my heel and was about to vacate the fictional city street when a long scream froze me in place. All eyes aimed for the brick building. White shades covered every window, except one. The fire escape had led the nerd to the only open window. A woman with inky black hair poked her head out of it. “Help, help!” she said. “He’s been stabbed.”

The Art of Dying Derik Cavignano Book Tour and Review!

Cavignano’s latest crime thriller sets a serial killer investigation against the backdrop of an escalating mob war
Boston’s baddest mobster Whitey Bulger inspires ‘The Art of Dying’

TAMPA, Florida – Award-winning author Derik Cavignano revisits his popular character Detective Ray Hanley in The Art of Dying (Dark Corners Press, September 20, 2019).

When the bizarre death of a mob foot soldier sparks an escalating war between Boston’s Irish and Italian mafia, Detective Ray Hanley’s relentless search for the truth uncovers evidence of a serial killer obsessed with the art of human suffering. As the body count rises, Detective Hanley must navigate a minefield of crime families, dirty politicians, and crooked cops, while matching wits with a deranged serial killer. Temptation, betrayal, and death threaten to derail the investigation… and justice doesn’t come without a price.

This fast-paced police procedural examines the darkest corners of the human mind, exposes powerful political corruption, and depicts an honorable detective striving to balance the horrors of the job with his commitment to his family.

Derik Cavignano: A native of Boston and a writer since high school, Derik Cavignano currently lives in Florida with his wife, children, and an angry cat who won’t stop biting him. He writes character-driven thrillers in a variety of genres, including horror, sci-fi, and crime. His novels include “The Righteous and the Wicked” and “Colony of the Lost” (a 2016 Silver Falchion Award finalist for best horror). “Boston gets gory in this enjoyable, horror-tinged crime tale.” — Kirkus Review for The Art of Dying

“Cavignano artfully misdirects the plot with family dramas and subtle clues, while keeping the cat-and-mouse conflict between Hanley and his quarry on track—all while the terror of the story’s victims ratchets up the tension between chapters.” — Blue Ink Reviews for The Art of Dying

“An edge-of-your seat detective thriller that crackles with gore and wit before delivering a stunning knockout blow. Fans of Silence of the Lambs should flock to Derik Cavignano’s new series debut.” — BestThrillers.com for The Art of Dying

“Cavignano brings wonderful characterization of people and places to his lightning-paced fantasy thriller... Boston neighborhoods are impeccably portrayed... A gleefully hard-boiled urban fantasy that lights up Boston's mean streets.”  Kirkus Review for Cavignano’s The Righteous and the Wicked

"A wildly entertaining book ... [that] delivers a deliciously compelling villain” — Bestthrillers.com review for Cavignano’s The Righteous and the Wicked

My Review
To say that this book is thrilling is an understatement. The Art of Dying by Derik Cavignano is a novel of murders that are taking place in Boston. One the mob's foot soldiers died in a bizarre manner which escalates the war between the Irish and Italian mafia. A couple more men are murdered and a few people are missing. Are these instances related? That is what Detective Ray Hanley has to find out.

With a deranged killer out there, one of the bodies has his limbs cut off and spider legs in place of the limbs, the other one fished out of the water had his genital in place of his nose. Now that is one bizarre killer.

The reader reads about the killer, The Artist, a man who was upset with the people he kills or abducts because of a slight done to him in the past. Ray and his fellow cops have a hard task of finding who and why of the investigation. The FBI is involved with one of the witnesses and of course, there is tension. But what is The Artists identity?

Ray has a brother Jacob who shows up occasionally in the story especially when Ray has succumbed to temptation and he needs his brother. The other characters are portrayed as they should be, the mafia dudes are tough and violent.

Ray is a gentler kind of cop as opposed to his partner Billy who is close to retirement and can be a real jerk. Ray has a wife and children while Billy is a single man with a slanted view of the world, but their interaction is a good one and they work well together.

Beware that this book is a gory horror story. I enjoyed reading this book, I hope to read the next one in the series. If you love a good scary police procedural type of book, this one is definitely for you. I read it in two sittings.

I received a copy of the book for review purposes.

An Interview with
DERIK CAVIGNANO

  1. Can you tell us a little bit about the research you did for this novel? How do you balance fact and fiction in your work?
I wanted to write a crime thriller that was gritty and authentic, but to do that takes a massive amount of research. Growing up in Boston during the heyday of Whitey Bulger’s Winter Hill Gang and Gennaro Angiulo’s La Cosa Nostra, I was exposed to constant news coverage on the mob. But in order to get inside the heads of my fictional crime bosses, I watched documentaries and read books about the history of Boston’s Irish and Italian mafia. I also wove into the novel certain aspects of stories I heard from police officers and other acquaintances who had first-hand knowledge of Bulger and his associates. I also researched police procedures, crime scene investigation techniques, the psychology of serial killers, and watched videos of autopsies. My goal was to add just enough facts to bring the story alive in a realistic way without hampering the pacing.
  1. You often write about topics that are considered unusual or even horrific. What draws you to this type of subject matter?
I find myself drawn to horror because it taps into our most primal emotions. Weaving elements of horror into a story can evoke a powerful response from the reader, especially if the reader is vested in the character. I’ve always felt that someone’s true character is best revealed when faced with their worst fears—will they rise to the occasion or run from the room with their tail between their legs? I think on some level everyone wonders that about themselves, and there’s a certain attraction to experiencing that test vicariously through a character.
  1. Why did you choose to base your character Jack Flaherty on Whitey Bulger in The Art of Dying? What do you find most compelling about Bulger’s story?
I grew up in Boston in the 80s, and during that time Whitey Bulger loomed large in the news and cast a dark shadow over the city. But no matter how many crimes were attributed to Bulger’s gang, the authorities could never seem to pin anything on him. He was always one step ahead of the law, which made me wonder if he’d paid off the cops or if his brother Billy—the long-serving president of the Massachusetts State Senate—had anything to do with that. Of course, the world would later discover that Bulger had secretly become an informant for the FBI and had used that relationship to bring down his enemies in the Italian mob. Another compelling element of Bulger’s story is the myth he created about being one of the “good bad guys”, a real-life Robin Hood of South Boston. And while some residents of Southie may share tales of Bulger donating money to the church or to neighbors in need, Whitey was at the same time shaking down local businesses and murdering with impunity.
  1. Kirkus Reviews wrote of your previous book The Righteous and the Wicked that your “Boston neighborhoods are impeccably portrayed.” Tell us a little bit about why you chose to set The Art of Dying in Boston as well.
I lived in Boston for over 30 years before relocating to Florida to escape the long winters. But even after being away for 12 years, I still consider Boston my hometown. It’s an amazing city with a rich history, and everything from Faneuil Hall to the Old North Church to Paul Revere’s house are so well-preserved, and walking the Freedom Trail is such a great way to explore the city. My love for the city seeped through the pages of my sci-fi suspense thriller, The Righteous and the Wicked, which features Detective Ray Hanley in a supporting role. In that book, Ray emerges as a larger than life character, so I knew he needed to star in his own series with the city of Boston as the backdrop.
  1. What is in store next for Detective Hanley?
In the next book, Detective Hanley teams up with a Salem cop to find a missing woman with ties to a demonic cult operating at the fringes of Salem’s witchcraft underground. I’m still in the outlining phase, but I expect the case to take Ray well outside his comfort zone and pit him against a dangerous villain who defies conventional logic.

Chapter 1

For KXXX TV and KXXX AM Radio News, this is Katie Carlson with your mid-morning eye-in-the-sky traffic report, and it’s an easy one: It’s messed up EVERYWHERE! So far, the 405 South is backed up all the way to the 101. So, if you are going into Hollywood this morning, you are going to be late for that audition. Also, there is an injury crash on the Eastbound 10. So, if you are heading into downtown LA, you might want to bring a magazine or get some knitting done. If you are going to LAX, forget it, call mom back east and tell her you will be driving out instead. Just Kidding! Any way, this is Katie Carlson with the Los Angeles mid-morning traffic report. Enjoy your commute everybody, NOT!

* * *

As the blare of the clock radio on the night table jolted her awake, Shari Barnes rubbed her eyes, blew her long brown hair out of her face, and snuggled into Nathan Townsend’s chest. She curled her body around his middle and took a deep whiff of his salty, masculine neck.

But she couldn’t ignore the voice on the radio.

“Monday morning traffic,” she sighed.

Nathan matched the sigh and put his arms around her. “At least you don’t have to drive over the hill.”

“Yeah, I would just die if I had to drive into Beverly Hills every day to work in a beautiful office.” Shari giggled and disappeared under their thick blue comforter for a few more moments of sleepy-headed bliss. She felt Nathan stretch up, and a moment later the radio shut off. Then he slid down next to her in the single bed they shared in their Studio City apartment, a few blocks north of Ventura Boulevard. The constant drone and rumble of another L.A. morning came clearly through the open window: cars honking, rock music blaring, the frantic scurrying sounds of the film shoot a few blocks away. Shari ran her bare feet up the inside of Nathan’s thigh.

He jumped. “Shit, your feet are cold.” He pushed her legs off of him.

“What time is it?” she murmured between kisses.

“Um, seven.” He nuzzled her neck and she felt him becoming erect against her.

“No time for that!” She threw off the covers. “Gotta be at work on time for once; gotta get my asp out of bed.”

“There’s a snake in the bed?” Nathan grabbed her with both hands and gave her belly gentle nips.

“Yeah, of the one-eyed variety.” Shari leaped to the floor and padded naked into the bathroom. She turned the hot water in the shower to high and stepped in, filling the small bathroom with steam.

She had just poured a green drop of shampoo into her palm and was running her hands together when the flimsy yellow and white shower curtain flew back and Nathan grinned in at her. She smiled back, surprised by neither his arrival nor the partial hard-on that preceded him.

“Mind if we join you?” he asked.

“There’s enough shampoo for everybody,” Shari said as she rubbed her hands across her scalp.

He stepped into the stall, pulled the curtain closed and began to lather her hair for her. She put her hands on his back, feeling the taut muscles and the water streaming there, but did not reach down between them. It took him about five seconds to realize it and hold her away.

“You okay?”

“Fine….”

“Don’t lie; I can always tell when you have something on your mind.”

“You know me better than I know me,” she said.

“You know it.” He pushed her wet hair over her shoulders. “Come on, give.”

“I was thinking maybe I should get a second job.”

“You’re worrying about money again?”

“Well, I have to shoot my student thesis film this year or I won’t graduate. But where am I going to get the money I need?”

“How much do you need?”

“At least five figures.”

5 STARS!

“Now we are perfectly posed to raise the question this thriller centers on: When bad things happen to good people, how fragile is the line between morality and survival? Is a little unprovable insurance fraud a victimless crime, or the gate to unfathomable legions of dark decay? Against the fast paced, infamous Hollywood backdrop you won't be able to believe what is happening all while a tiny voice is zinging nagging quesions at you about what you would do in their shoes. Add in sex, drugs, owners of houses of ill repute, the profession that has earned every filthy stereotype with less faith than you would offer the sleaziest used car saleman (attorneys at law, of course), a young cop eager to make a name with a personal vendetta, and all the innocent (and not so innocent) bystanders, plenty of surprising plot twists, this is a book you won't be able to put down.” - Backstage Blogs
