Princes of the Lower East Side by Meredith Allison Book Blitz and Giveaway!

Book & Author Details:

Princes of the Lower East Side
by Meredith Allison
(A Scalisi Family Novel, #2)
Publication date: October 28th 2019
Genres: Adult, Historical, Thriller

Synopsis:
Mia Scalisi returns in this highly anticipated follow-up to Blood & Whiskey!
Sicily is a paradise on earth Mia Angela Scalisi doesn’t want to leave, but after over a year of peace, obligations—like being Hyman Goldberg’s It Girl at his new nightclub—call her back to New York City.
But everything she’s known in New York has changed…and that might even include the men she once thought were her friends.
When a new, ambitious gangster threatens to take over the old neighborhood, bringing devastation to the poor families who live there, Mia can’t ignore the bonds that tie her to the underworld way of life that killed her brother and set her upon a merciless, bloody path of revenge.
With her brother’s widow, her niece, and a mysterious, devoted bodyguard at her side, Mia must reclaim her position as head of her dead brother’s business, establish herself as the reigning queen among the princes of the Lower East Side, and make the ultimate decision: who lives, and who must die.

Read an Excerpt:
Hyman watched them all go, breathing deeply in and out through his nose as his jaw muscles twitched. He fixed Mia with a long stare, the look on his face terrifying and unlike anything she’d ever seen before.
Finally, he said, “That does not happen here. This is not that kind of place.”
Mia bristled immediately, her slight fear of him vanishing. She was angry with Gloria for acting out, too, but Hyman was toeing a delicate line with his words. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You know very well what it means,” Hyman said, his voice sharp as a knife. “The Divine is not some sleazy speakeasy with brawls and drunkards.”
“She is not a drunkard. She made a mistake.”
“A mistake that’s costing me my reputation,” he snapped. “This place was built for people with money. Real money. Old money. You saw the governor and the senator here. This is not the place for grieving widows to act like drunken floozies arguing over who’s a better piece of ass!”
Mia hadn’t realized she’d lunged at Hyman until she felt arms locking around hers and heard her own snarl of killing rage echoing in her ears. Charlie was pressed to her back.
“Stop it,” he ordered.
Hyman blinked at her in shock.
Her heart pounded almost painfully. She wrestled her arms out of Charlie’s. “Let go of me.”
After a tense moment of silence, Hyman took another deep breath and straightened his tuxedo bowtie. “Tensions are high,” he said finally, his words clipped. “As they usually are after a disagreeable scene like what we just witnessed. The best course of action is to proceed with the evening as normal. Miss Scalisi, you will go back inside and be your charming little self. You will continue with your set and make everyone forget the unpleasantness they witnessed. And I will overlook what just happened here. This. Once.” He pointed the opposite direction down the hallway. “I believe you know the way to your dressing room. You have five minutes to change.”
If she remained in the hallway a moment longer, she was going to say something that would get her in deep, irrevocable trouble.
Mia spun on her heel and stalked down the hallway. When she reached her dressing room, she slammed the door with enough force to shake the building.

AUTHOR BIO:
Meredith Allison has embraced her nerdiness from youth, with minor jaunts of attempting to be "cool" during high school and college. Spoiler alert: she was unsuccessful at fooling anyone. After this dark period, she returned to the light, embracing her bookish nature and penchant for action and horror films, bloody survivalist video games (she's looking at you, Resident Evil and Call of Duty) interspersed with the occasional sweeping fantasy adventure RPG (Final Fantasy, anyone?). Along the way, she developed her knack for storytelling, which began when she was a mere child-person many moons ago.

Meredith is a writer (and reader) of many kinds of fiction, but in particular spy thrillers, military-esque suspense, and historical crime. A native of Lincoln, Nebraska, she is by proxy a Huskers fan (GO BIG RED!), as UNL is her undergraduate alma mater, and moonlights as an obligatory Blue Jays fan due to completing her graduate MFA studies at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska.

When she emerges from her writing cave, blinking in dismay at having to be exposed to the cruel light of day yet again, she can be found romping with her two Pomeranians, serving her overlord cat, hanging with her husband, battling it out with the undead or practicing a new kind of magery on her PlayStation, or simply huddled in a dark corner somewhere with just enough light to read a favorite book. Other interests include baking, cooking, and blogging about new restaurants.

In the judge’s rap of a gavel, Devon’s found guilty of assault. The star of the Oceanside High’s basketball team loses his shot at the one thing he’s worked so hard for—the championship game where college scouts could see how good he is.

Eastbound From Flagstaff by Annette Valentine Book Review! #EastboundFromFlagstaff

“Eastbound from Flagstaff”
Annette Valentine | September 17, 2019 | Morgan James
Paperback ISBN: 9781642793345  | Price: $18.95
Historical Fiction / Inspirational Fiction

1920s Southern historical fiction novel addresses the mystery
of tragedy and the possibility of redemption
Nashville, TN
Annette Valentine’s debut novel opens with the spotlight on a young man in transition at a time in history when men longed for adventure and aspired for something greater than themselves. This multidimensional story confronts bold theological concerns and existential worries, all while providing a compelling narrative about waywardness, grace, and returning home.

A novel blending Southern historical fiction with a classic bildungsroman foundation, “Eastbound From Flagstaff” portrays an individual who comes to recognize the significance of family, loyalty, and the richness of heritage. Simon Hagan is running from a lie, intent on believing his own efforts and perseverance can overcome anything. He abandons roots that offer him strength and hides behind his charm, living every moment as if life’s daring him to fail―again. He’s reckoning with his father’s God who could have delivered better outcomes for him in his youth but didn’t.

The first installment in an epic trilogy that begins in the 1920s, “Eastbound from Flagstaff” follows Simon’s return to the notion of forgiveness. This proves to be the catalyst for a new beginning as Simon reconnects with the place he once thought was an impossible dream.

“A wonderful read, a well-fought redemption story.”
Darrell Waltrip, author, American motorsports analyst, and former racing driver

My Review

"A love story based on the author’s father,

Eastbound From Flagstaff, is a fresh testament to the resiliency of the human spirit with one stouthearted man’s quest to improve life’s offering."

The first chapter had Simon Hagen waiting in a train station for his wife Celeste and their baby daughter. This was the first that Simon will have met his new daughter.

The next chapter takes up back to Simon's beginning. He is 17 years old when he witnesses the death of his mother. A horrible thing that affected his father and siblings terribly.

Simon then decides to leave the farm and strike out on his own. He goes to Detroit where he gets a job at the Ford factory, not liking factory work, even though he desperately wants to own a Model T.

After he leaves the Ford factory, he becomes a cop and stays in the job for over 5 years. During the time he was at the Ford factory he meets Virginia Mallory and her family, husband Charlie, daughters Rachel and Celeste.

Simon is staying at a boarding house, the owner Mrs. Butcher and fellow boarder Mr.Begbie. These two are definitely characters, Mrs. Butcher coming across as a mean old lady and Mr.Begbie is a scrappy character.

This story also has a lot of reference to God, Simon's father is a man of God and after Simon's mother's death, he has given up on God. So this story is one of forgiveness and one of going back to your roots. It takes Simon from the farm with dreams of his future to Detroit, from Prohibition and the mob to wanting to be an actor to getting tuberculosis and having to spend time in a sanitorium in New Mexico.

What did I think of the book? At first, I did not think I would like the book. As I got into it further, I had a hard time putting it down and as I got to the end of the book, I did not want it to end. Since it is a trilogy, I am looking forward to reading the next two books to find out what more there is in Simon's life back at the farm and what will happen in his future. Can he forgive God? I highly recommend this book!

I  received a copy of this book for review purposes only.

The Shape’s laugh boomed throughout the shop, knocking a porcelain eye off the nearest shelf. Cleverness is such a tasty vice. When I crush it and drink it, it is sweeter than the blood of a newborn babe. You maggots think that you can outwit me. If after fifty thousand years the Adversary still has not caught me, what chance have any of you?”

Beware the East Wind (The Mah Jongg Mysteries) by Barbara Barrett

Beware the east wind! It’s hurricane season in Florida, and everyone’s attention is focused on preparing for the latest tempest. But in Serendipity Springs, mah jongg pals Marianne, Sydney, Micki and Kat are caught in a different kind of whirlwind—a mesmerizing murder case involving a slain hypnotist/chef and the woman police suspect of doing her in, her embittered catering partner, Portia.

About the Author

Barbara Barrett started reading mysteries when she was pregnant with her first child to keep her mind off things like her changing body and food cravings. When she’d devoured as many Agatha Christies as she could find, she branched out to English village cozies and Ellery Queen.
Later, to avoid a midlife crisis, she began writing fiction at night when she wasn’t at her day job as a human resources analyst for Iowa State Government. After releasing eleven full-length romance novels and one novella, she returned to the cozy mystery genre, using one of her retirement pastimes, the game of mah jongg, as her inspiration. Not only has it been a great social outlet, it has also helped keep her mind active when not writing.
Bamboozled, the second book in her “Mah Jongg Mystery” series, features four friends who play mah jongg together and share otherwise in each other’s lives. None of the four is based on an actual person. Each is an amalgamation of several mah jongg friends with a lot of Barbara’s imagination thrown in for good measure. The four will continue to appear in future books in the series.
Anticipating the day when she would write her first mystery, she has been a member of the Mystery/Romantic Suspense chapter of Romance Writers of America for over a decade. She credits them with helping her hone her craft.
Barbara is married to the man she met her senior year of college. They have two grown children and eight grandchildren.

Nurse Trudy Genova is making plans to take her relationship to NYPD detective Ned O'Malley to the next level when she lands a gig as a medical consultant on a film shoot at the famed Dakota apartment building in Manhattan, which John Lennon once called home. Then star Monica Kiley goes missing, a cast member turns up dead, and it appears Trudy might be next. Meanwhile, Ned tackles a mysterious murder case in which the victim is burned beyond recognition. When his investigations lead him back to the Dakota, Trudy finds herself wondering: how can she fall in love if she can't even survive?

Readers of Death Unscripted, the first book in the Trudy Genova Manhattan Mystery series, will find the same pleasures in this sequel: fast pacing, engaging characters, twists and turns on the way to a satisfying close. From the award-winning author of The Nora Tierney English Mysteries, this second series is a winner. Once again M.K. Graff reveals her talents in crafting this delightful mix of amateur sleuth and police procedural.

Part procedural, part cozy, Death at the Dakota is a well-crafted and highly entertaining mystery.- Bruce Robert Coffin, #1 bestselling author of the Detective Byron mysteries.

I fell in love -- not only with co-protagonists, Trudy and Ned, the richly detailed and historic setting of The Dakota, and the unique cast of characters, but with the unusual plot of Death at the Dakota. Sherry Harris, Agatha Award nominated author of the Sarah Winston Garage Sale Mysteries

Snippet:

Ned left the dining room and wandered back toward the living room, certain Trudy had said she would be here today, but he hadn’t seen her yet.

A cluster of people stood around an actress in a filmy white wedding dress standing near one of the tall windows. From Trudy’s description, he thought the man who fussed with arranging the back of the gauzy gown must be the costume designer, Rashid Something. Troy Benedict, dressed in tuxedo pants with his shirt hanging open, stood off to one side, tapping his fingers on the top of the grand piano. Meg approached him with a handful of shirt studs and a bow tie.

Afternoon sun cast muted fingers of light into the room, where three still photographers ringed around the woman, snapping away as of Phin Hill-Yorke directed. Egan and another man Ned knew to be Perry King stood on the other side of the room, hovering. Ned had seen the salt-and-pepper-haired King on his popular morning show, and was surprised by how much shorter he looked in person. But then Monica was petite, like Trudy, and King would look taller on television next to her.

The director’s assistant stood off to one side, out of camera range, holding a bouquet of flowers. Ned approached China and asked if she’d seen Trudy Genova. The woman grinned widely.

“Yes, I’ve seen her, and so have you, detective.” China gestured toward the actress.

“I suppose that fall will do,” Phin said, appraising the bride. “Turn away from the window a bit, please,” she instructed, and the bride turned slightly.

Trudy! Ned watched her move and recognized her profile. She wore a wig of blonde curls and the front of her hair had been sprayed a lighter blonde.

“Give her the flowers, China,” Phin continued, and China handed the lavish bouquet to Trudy. “And toward me a bit more, please.”

The cameras whirred and clicked once Trudy accepted the bouquet and moved into place. She noticed Ned and a bright red flush spread up her neck and into her face.

“Stop snapping! Trudy, what the hell—” Phin remonstrated, and turned to look in the direction of Trudy’s focus. When she saw Ned, the director nodded sagely. “Ah, the penny drops.”
