SYNOPSIS:  Echo is the first book of a trilogy that is an epic story of two cursed lovers that are constantly driven apart by time, fate, and death; while they are determined to defy all three and remain together.  When one of them dies, the other time travels to the lost lover's next (or last) incarnation.  This story spans over a millennium---to several different times, places, and lives of two extraordinary human beings whose devotion to each other is endless, and whose passion for each other is deathless.

BLURB:
A man and a woman…
They are two blended souls; one being split in two. Bound by a love that is not of this world.
A cruel curse…
Forbidden from being together in the afterlife, they suffer the same edict on Earth if they ever meet: one of them will always meet a tragic, untimely end.
Defiant ones…
They have a secret weapon. When one dies, the other goes ahead (or back) in time to their departed lover’s next (or previous) incarnation, thus defying whoever (or whatever) is determined to keep them apart.
An endless circle…
This cycle of death and reunion spans over a thousand years; love and devotion that transcends all barriers, the inevitable grief and suffering, and the question of whether or not they should break the chain of pain and loss—and whether or not they have the courage—by separating forever.
It is a love story like no other, and an adventure story that transports the reader all through time; from the Dark Ages to present day…and beyond.

Thrilling New Novel Puts Indie Author Against Big Publishing After Stolen Manuscript Gets Attention!!!

How much does a career mean – is it worth risking a life? That’s a central question in both “The Slush Pile Brigade” (September 15, 2015, $12.99, $2.99) and “Blind Thrust” (October 2015, $12.99, $2.99), by Samuel Marquis.

About the Book “The Slush Pile Brigade”
On his thirtieth birthday, Nick Lassiter has lost his girlfriend and his job, is wanted by the police, and has discovered that his unpublished thriller, “Blind Thrust,” has been stolen and turned into a blockbuster movie called Subterranean Storm. Even worse, the movie is based on a soon-to-be best-selling novel by Australian thriller writer Cameron Beckett, one of the world’s biggest brand name authors. Rather than seek revenge through a financial settlement or public humiliation, Lassiter sets out for New York to obtain mea culpas from Beckett and his renowned literary agent, whom he is certain colluded with the Aussie in stealing his debut novel.

Once in New York, Lassiter, and his three quirky fish-out-of-water friends who insist on accompanying him, instantly run afoul of the law and other powerful forces intent on thwarting them and their mission. As they encounter one thorny obstacle after another, the scope of their inquiries expands and they are soon in way over their heads, battling toe-to-toe not only against the mega-bestselling author and his agent, but a formidable army of antagonists, including the NYPD, Beckett’s Big Five publishing house security squad, and the Russian mob. Collectively, these adversaries present Lassiter with the greatest—and deadliest—challenge of his life.

Unexpectedly aided by his CIA father, Director of the Russian Counterintelligence Desk, and his former girlfriend turned CIA-informant, Lassiter and his comrades take to calling themselves the Slush Pile Brigade. Outmatched and outgunned, they are foiled at virtually every turn but still they are determined to win. But will they find justice? Can they prove that Beckett and his crooked literary agent have stolen Lassiter’s blockbuster novel and are undeservedly reaping the success? And more importantly, will they solve one of the most important counterintelligence cases in CIA history and actually live to tell about it?

About the Book “Blind Thrust”
Horrific earthquakes are devastating the Front Range between Denver and Colorado Springs in an area long believed to be seismically quiescent. They are being generated by ruptures along cryptic, mysterious, deeply buried thrust faults (blind thrusts) that, unlike many faults, do not break the surface during large-scale seismic events. Somehow the cause of the unusual earthquakes must be unraveled and the cataclysms stopped before they result in more carnage and devastation. But are they the result of natural tectonic adjustments, hydrofracking, conventional subsurface sequestering, or clandestine operations?

Environmental Geologist Joe Higheagle is on a mission to find out the answer. But he soon finds himself in a deadly duel of wits against powerful forces. With his team of techie sleuths, Higheagle goes toe to toe against his adversaries while grappling to collect, analyze, and leverage the scientific data needed to prove his case. But at every turn he is thwarted by his shadowy enemy and, with the cataclysms worsening, he may not have enough on his side to solve the mystery and save Colorado from more devastation.

Can he solve the enigma of the earthquakes and gather enough evidence to stop those responsible? Will the tremors continue to wreak death and mayhem across the Front Range? Or will Higheagle and his outgunned team be defeated and ultimately crushed by their adversaries? If the earthquakes are not stopped, thousands more will perish and more towns and homes will be destroyed, leaving countless injured and homeless as well as untold financial damage across the Front Range. But can the resourceful Higheagle and his team stop those responsible? In the end, all they can do is try.

An Interview with Samuel Marquis

What was the inspiration behind both “The Slush Pile Brigade” and “Blind Thrust”? “Blind Thrust” seems more closely aligned to your day-to-day work, while “The Slush Pile Brigade” seems like an adventure in your imagination.

I actually wrote “Blind Thrust” before “The Slush Pile Brigade.” The inspiration behind “Blind Thrust” is my experiences in California and Texas as a registered professional geologist in assessing earthquake hazards and fault classifications. I wrote the novel and my agent was pitching it to publishers in New York. I began wondering, “What if a mega-best-selling author was having writer’s block, needed a good story and actually colluded with his literary agent to steal a promising novel by a no-name author from the slush pile, an author who happened to be an expert in his field like me and had written a scientifically-accurate novel like “Blind Thrust?”

I wondered to myself how I would try and seek revenge. Once I dug into the research, I quickly discovered that big-name publishers, producers, writers, editors and directors in both the literary industry and Hollywood pilfer creative works from no-name authors and screenwriters all the time. It made me angry. And that is why I wrote “The Slush Pile Brigade.” Like a lot of people, I’m sick and tired of the smart, hard-working little guy being stomped on and not being able to earn a fair wage for his creative work.

Why did you choose to self-publish instead of working with a traditional publisher?

Traditional publishers are not investing in, nurturing or taking on new authors unless their costbenefit analysis shows significant profit potential with minimal editorial and publicity effort. In other words, they support the one-percent authors who generally began publishing prior to 2005, and they are painfully slow in all aspects of their business model. So even though I had two very talented literary agents, the choice for me and 99.9% of the authors out there is the choice between having full artistic control, publishing multiple series simultaneously, putting out several great books a year and receiving 70 percent of the profit from your creativity and perseverance – or watching other people do it.

What would you do if you were a struggling, no-name writer and the world’s second bestselling author of all time stole your book and turned it into a blockbuster movie and book without giving you credit? How would you seek revenge?

Personally, I like the way Nick handled it. He is only 30 years old, out of work and just lost his girlfriend – and yet all he wants is a simple apology. He is driven purely by principle. I don’t think that I would be so forgiving of the thief that stole my bestselling-caliber manuscript from the slush pile. Most of the readers and friends I have asked say they would probably hire a lawyer and take legal action. I would probably do the same, I suppose, but only if I thought I could win. The problem is there is no way on earth a no-name is going to win a copyright infringement case against a big-name author, publisher or producer. Power and money trump all – always have, always will. Except in my novel, I guess I’m just a sucker for happy endings.

The Tempest by James Lilliefors Spotlight with Excerpt and Giveaway!

Thriller / Suspense
Date Published: 7/28/2015
Publisher: HarperCollinsPublishers

James Lilliefors's unlikely detective duo, Pastor Luke Bowers and homicide investigator Amy Hunter, return in a new murder mystery set in Maryland's picturesque Tidewater County
Tourists like Susan Champlain pass through the Chesapeake Bay region every year. But when Susan pays Pastor Luke Bowers a visit, he's disturbed by what she shares with him. Her husband has a short temper, she says, and recently threatened to make her "disappear" because of a photo Susan took on her phone.
Luke is concerned enough to tip off Tidewater County's chief homicide investigator, Amy Hunter. That night, Susan's body is found at the foot of the Widow's Point bluff. Hunter soon discovers Susan left behind clues that may connect her fate to a series of killings in the Northeast, a powerful criminal enterprise, and to a missing Rembrandt masterpiece, The Storm on the Sea of Galilee.
Whoever is behind the killings has created a storm of deception and betrayal, a deliberate "tempest" designed to obscure the truth. Now Hunter and Bowers must join forces to trace the dangerous secret glimpsed in Susan's photo. But will they be the next targets on a killer's deadly agenda . . .

The Author

James Lilliefors is the author of the geopolitical thriller novels The Leviathan Effect and Viral. A journalist and novelist who grew up near Washington, D.C., Lilliefors is also the author of three nonfiction books. The Psalmist and The Tempest are the first two books in the Luke Bowers and Amy Hunter series.

Prologue
Spring
“Miracles. What can I tell you? In a skeptical world, if a real miracle occurred, it wouldn’t even make the evening news. Who would believe it? This one, though, will be different. This one, the skeptics won’t be able to explain. People will want to see for themselves; they’ll line up around the block to have a look. That’s what we need to talk about.”
Walter Kepler watched his attorney’s own skepticism harden slightly as he waited on the details of Kepler’s plan. Jacob Weber was used to this, to Kepler’s Barnum-like enthusiasms as he introduced a new idea. Weber had precise, dark eyes, a narrow face, bristly white hair cut close to the scalp. Seen from behind, he could appear as small and fragile as a child. But he also possessed that rarest of human qualities—consistent good judgment; unerringly good, in Kepler’s estimation.
As presented, Kepler’s plan consisted of three parts: A sells a painting to B; B sells the painting to C; and C (who was Kepler) uses the painting to bring about a “miracle.” The first two parts of the plan he would handle himself, with the assistance of Nicholas Champlain and, of course, Belasco. It was for third part that he needed Jacob Weber’s help—needed his judgment, and, ultimately, his skills as a negotiator.
Kepler had been formulating versions of this plan in his head since he was a boy, trailing his father through the great art museums of the Northeast and Europe, stopping to stare at some painting or sculpture that, his father insisted, was not only an important work but also a masterpiece. With time, Kepler had learned to tell the difference, to understand why certain paintings—like certain people, and ideas—held greater intrinsic value than others. He had spent much of his adult life refining that understanding, through the storms of sudden wealth, divorce and the more mundane trials of daily living.
When he finished telling Weber his plan, Kepler turned the conversation to the painting. He watched Weber’s face flush with a new interest as he described the masterpiece that had dominated his thoughts for the past three weeks, ever since he’d ascertained that it was the real thing. The tempest. Fourteen men trapped on a boat. Each responds differently to a life-threatening storm: one trying valiantly to fix the main sail, another cowering in terror from the waves, one calmly steering the rudder. Fourteen men, fourteen reactions. Kepler imagined how his attorney would react once the waters began to churn in another several months.
Then Kepler sat back and let Jacob Weber voice his concerns. They were much as he had expected—candid, well-reasoned, occasionally surprising. Kepler managed to fend off most; those he couldn’t, he stored away.
“So what are we looking at?” his attorney asked. “When would it need to happen?”
Kepler glanced at Weber’s right hand, absently tracing the stem of the coffee cup. It was a pleasant April morning, the bay shivering with whitecaps.
“Late summer,” he said. “August, I’m thinking.”
His attorney thought about that, showing no expression. Calculating how the plan would interrupt and impact his own life, no doubt. Jacob Weber finally closed and opened his eyes. He nodded. “It’s do-able,” he said. After a thoughtful pause, he added, “Actually, I kind of like it.”
Weber’s response would have sounded lukewarm to an outsider. To Kepler, it was a hearty endorsement. In fact, he had never known Jacob Weber to be quite so enthusiastic about one of his ideas. All in all, it was a very good start.

Excerpt

With her heart beating wildly, under the cover of the loud music, she tiptoed toward the bedroom window where the fire escape was. Praying that the man would not turn toward the bedroom, she quietly raised the window while holding her breath and praying it wouldn’t make a sound. Not daring to look back, she dropped herself onto the landing, sucking in frigid air and almost choking as her feet hit the icy metal.

Melissa flew down the fire escape slipping and sliding on the smooth, glassy coating. Her bare foot slipped out from under her on the last step sending her reeling back onto the stairs and hitting her head. Looking up, she saw the masked man lean out of the window above her.

Melissa had no time to even check her head for blood as she wrenched herself from the sidewalk and ran for her life.

About the Book

Walking Home is a compelling glimpse into the lives of emigrés in modern day America–refugees from genocide and war. The book journeys from loss and grief to survival and joy. The story hits the ground running, literally, with Kidane’s escape from Africa that reaches far into his future into Seattle, Washington. Kidane battles with survivor guilt while he struggles to settle into Seattle, a new life, relationship, school and work. He wants the American dream but is haunted by the past where he survived horrific violence in Africa, and was forced to leave everything and everyone he loved, behind.

Beautifully written, this poignant and intimate portrait of survivors is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the lives of emigrants in our evolving communities.

Launch - Interview

Any parting words?
I hope everyone has enjoyed the summer, and that they’ll have a happy, healthy year-end as well. If you’re so inclined, I’d love for you to connect with on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or Instagram!

I Am A Reader - Grandpa's Hands

“They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son. And decorated with a gold band to show the world that I’d married the most special woman on earth. They trembled when I walked my daughter down the aisle, and shook when I buried my parents. They’ve helped me hide my face, comb my hair, and cleansed my timeworn body. They’re marked by the ruggedness that has been my life.

“Nate Marshall said I should meet him here at noon. If you’ll just tell me where to find him….”
“I’m Nate,” he said, releasing her hand. “Good to meet you.” He’d said those words to dozens of people on dozens of occasions, but for a reason he couldn’t explain, didn’t think he’d ever meant them more.
Eden tucked her fingertips into the back pockets of her jeans. “I expected you’d be, ah, well, older.” Then she plopped a hand on the nearest teen’s shoulder. “These are my boys,” she said, introducing them one by one.

"The author does a great job with all the characters there are a few but easy to keep up with. I have not read the first book, but I have heard a lot about it which helped a little, but you won’t be lost. I will get getting more books by this author. A great series."

The doorbell pealed, and she stepped quietly from the classroom to get rid of whatever salesman had come calling. But instead of a college student selling magazine subscriptions, she found Brett Michaels on the porch. Every nerve prickled with dread as he swaggered into the foyer, but she forced a cheery smile.

Letters from Annie (Douglass) Lima - Being a Freelance Writer

Have you ever wondered how freelance writers make a living? By writing to-the-point articles, turning them in on time…and learning how to resell what they’ve submitted, that’s how. Below, a peek at the method I used to rack up more than 2,500 articles under my byline...

"Sit back and enjoy a great read that tells a story of love, romance, friendship, forgiveness, and even a little mystery!"

"Overall, this was a good book and a nice distraction. Even with my Eden frustration. All's well that ends well. :) I'll be looking for the next book in this series!"

"While Eden’s mixed signals toward Nate frustrated me at times, overall I identified too well with her character’s need to take everything on to her own shoulders. To me, the boys and Nate gave this book its heart, and I found it difficult to put down the book once I had started. (Even though this is the second book in a series, I did not feel lost from not having read the first one.)"

beck valley books - Creating a Book Video Trailer

Have you ever wondered how a book’s video trailer is created? Well, I can’t tell you about the dozens of hours that a designer puts in to come up with the final product, but I can share what I do to help make her job a little easier.

Kindle and Me - Excerpt

Did Eden stay in control of her boys with shouts and fist-shaking? Not if those big sincere eyes and the warmth of her pretty smile was any indicator.

“You planning to go back to sucking your thumb, son?”

It took a second to figure out what his dad was talking about. Laughing quietly, Nate put down the butter knife and wiped his hand on a napkin.

“I know that googlie-eyed look,” Hank said, smirking. “I’d bet my Greely Stampede Barrel Champion buckle on it…he was off in Lala Land, dreaming about some woman.”

Dixie n Dottie - Review

"I especially love that Eden has dedicated her life to helping troubled teen boys. She is wonderful at it and is very inspiring!

A very easy read that will stick with you long after you put the book down!"

DOES SHE EVEN NEED A HERO?

Summer Lane is no damsel in distress. For the past two years, she's been battling her way back from her worst nightmare, all by herself. So she doesn't need the fabulous former Marine Zach Marshall swooping in to save her.

But she needn't worry. Zach has hung up his shining armor. His instinct to rescue has only brought him heartache, and he's not about to risk it all again--even though everything about Summer makes him yearn to help.

Will she accept his challenge to step up and conquer her fears on her own--even her deepest fears, like trust...and love?

Yes, it's true: Once upon a time, best-selling author Loree Lough (literally) sang for her supper, performing before packed audiences throughout the U.S. Now and then, she blows the dust from her 6-string to croon a tune or two for the "grandorables," but mostly, she just writes. (And writes.) Over the years, her stories have earned nearly 100 industry and "Readers' Choice" awards, 7 movie options, and over 80 4- and 5-star reviews.

There are more than 5,000,000 (yes, that's FIVE MILLION) copies of Loree's books in circulation, and in September of 2015, she'll have 108 books (fiction and non-fiction for kids and adults) 72 short stories, 2,500+ articles in print. To date, she has received 50,000+ letters from fans (a carton of books goes to Meredith P. in Joliet, IL -- which she has elected to donate to her local library --for writing the 50,000th letter)!

Loree loves sharing learned-the-hard-way lessons about the craft and the industry, and her comedic approach makes her a favorite (and frequent) guest of writers' organizations, book clubs, private and government institutions, college and high school writing programs both here and abroad.

A writer who believes in "giving back," Loree dedicates a portion of her income to Soldiers' Angels, Special Operations Warrior Foundation, and other worthwhile organizations.

She splits her time between her home in the Baltimore suburbs and a cabin in the Allegheny Mountains, and shares both with her real-life hero Larry, who rarely complains, even when she adds yet another item to her vast collection of lighthouses, wind chimes, and "wolf stuff."
