STEALING GAMES: How John McGraw Transformed Baseball with the 1911 New York Giants by Maury Klein (Sports/History)
The 1911 New York Giants stole an astonishing 347 bases, a record that still stands more than a century later. That alone makes them special in baseball history, but as Maury Klein relates in STEALING GAMES, they also embodied a rapidly changing America on the cusp of a faster, more frenetic pace of life dominated by machines, technology and urban culture. Baseball, too, was evolving from the dead-ball to the live-ball era --- the cork-centered ball was introduced in 1910 and structurally changed not only the outcome of individual games but the way the game itself was played, requiring upgraded equipment, new rules and new ways of adjudicating.

Release Day of Bride of a Distant Isle by Sandra Byrd!!!

An unforgettable romance set in Victorian England, Bride of A Distant Isle is the engrossing story of Annabel Ashton, who fights to save her family home and her mother's honor while trying to figure out if the man she loves wants her—or just wants to use her to achieve his own ambitions.

Miss Annabel Ashton is a teacher at the Rogers School for Young Ladies in Winchester when she takes a brief visit to her family home, Highcliffe Hall at Milford-on-Sea. She believes her stay will be short but soon learns that she will not be returning to the safety of the school. Instead, she remains at Highcliffe, at the mercy of her cousin, Edward Everedge.

Annabel protests, but as the illegitimate daughter of a woman who died in an insane asylum, she has little say. Edward is running out of money and puts the house up for sale to avoid financial ruin. He insists that Annabel marry, promising her to a sinister, frightening man. But as the house gets packed for sale, it begins to reveal disquieting secrets. Jewelry, artifacts, and portraits mysteriously appear, suggesting that Annabel may be the true heir of Highcliffe.

She has only a few months to prove her legitimacy, perhaps with assistance from the handsome but troubled Maltese Captain Dell’Acqua. But does he have Annabel’s best interests at heart?

And then, a final, most ominous barrier to both her inheritance and her existence appears: a situation neither she nor anyone else could have expected. Will Annabel regain her life and property—and trust her heart—before it’s too late?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt :
From Chapter Three
Lucy had thought about meeting Daniel again a thousand times, but it had never played out like this. She surprised herself at the ferocious nature of her attack. She was mocking him and she wanted to rise above that, just stick to the facts, but she couldn't.
"Look," Daniel spoke again. "I need to talk to you."
His insistence just wound Lucy up more. "Oh, you need to talk, do you? Now that it suits you, it's time for a chat? What about all the times when I needed to talk? Where we're you then? With your new woman? Go and talk to her now if you need a chat."
"Stop, Lucy. I know you hate me, and I deserve it, but I need to talk to you. You're in danger. Serious danger."
Lucy did stop. For a moment. But she hadn't finished.
"Yes, I'm in danger. In danger of punching you, of kicking your head in."
Daniel leaned forward, tried to grab her hands. Lucy pulled away, sputtering, and he sighed. But he didn’t lean away.
"Listen, this is about your father. He was murdered. The accident was no accident. And the people who did it are coming after you now."
Lucy let the words sink in, her mind a confused jumble of conflicting thoughts. She started again on autopilot. "I don't know what kind of game you’re playing this time, but you are full of shit."
Daniel looked her straight in the eye, silently commanding her to listen. It was a look she recognized, but one he’d never turned on her.
"I know this sounds crazy, but I'm deadly serious. Your father was working on something classified – Operation Honeydripper. Check it out. His killers think you have information and they'll stop at nothing to take it from you. I want to help you."
Lucy could feel her mind coming back, shifting her away from anger, but the rage wasn’t completely subdued.
"You've got a nerve coming back here and feeding me this bullshit. You didn't even know my father. You’re a bastard for bringing him into this mess, putting the blame on him."
She was shaking as she stood. "I honestly don't know what I ever saw in you."
The shaking increased as she marched from the bar but she didn’t look back.
My Thoughts
Eighty and Out is about a pact that sisters Louise and Jeannie agree to after visiting a beloved aunt that is living out her years in a nursing home and that is that they will not live past the age of eighty. Louise is the narrator of the story and we grow right along with these two sisters through childhood, high school years, forbidden love, college years for Louise, marriages and the birth of a child.
Not only do we learn about the sister's and their lives we get a peek into the relationships with the men they choose, deaths of loved ones and how Louise copes with it all. With strict but loving parents the two women grow up to have their own dramas to face. A story about love, loss, grief and ambitions. There were a lot of similarities to my own life as I grew up in the late 50's and the 60's, what a woman's role was, discrimination and racial tension so it brought a bit of nostalgia back for me. A bond between sisters is something that is hard to break and when it does it is heartbreaking and can leave a person grief stricken to the point that the person can't go on, but most of us do go on.
I really enjoyed this novel, loved the time period it was written in from the 50's all the way through 2000's. Fast paced, well written except for a few grammatical errors that in no way took me from being interested until the end of the book, and in spots had me in tears.
I received this book to review through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, all the opinions above are 100% my own.
About the Product
Winter can take a toll on all skin types, even those who don’t have sensitive skin. The harsh, winter months call for a gentle cleanser that hydrates and soothes for skin that can take on the elements. Our recommendation? Exuviance Gentle Cleansing Creme. Formulated with Gluconolactone (a Polyhydroxy Acid), this cleanser provides anti-aging benefits without irritation and has been both Dermatologist and allergy tested.
Product snapshot:
• Formulated with Gluconolactone (PHA) and botanicals to smooth skin texture
• Comfort rich, soap-free formula gently dissolves makeup and impurities
• Lightly hydrates and soothes
The benefits:
This comfort-rich cleanser gently removes makeup, surface oils and impurities without altering the skin's natural moisture balance. My Thoughts
Winter in the north woods of Wisconsin can get pretty dry and rough on the skin so it is important to have a quality product that won't dry out the skin further. I love Exuviance products, I have reviewed several different ones. The Exuviance Gentle Cleansing Creme is formulated to be effective in removing makeup and other impurities without messing with natural moisture in the skin.
This creme does not lather up, I was expecting it to because I am used to facial cleansers to foam up. No problem, though, I have been using it for some time now, about a month, and I use it the recommended 2x day. You do not need a lot, I use about 1/4th of a teaspoon each time. It goes on nice and rinses off really well, taking the makeup with. It has a light pleasant smell and the tube is 7.2 ounces so it will last for awhile, which I like. I have experienced no breakouts, just nice smooth skin after I have used it. You can cleanse with it and then use a facial cream of some type or just cleanse, rinse and go. As with other Exuviance products I have tried, I am extremely satisfied!
The Spare Heirs Society Cordially Invites You to Meet Ethan Moore: The Scoundrel
Lady Roselyn Grey’s debut has finally arrived, and of course, she has every flounce and flutter planned. She’ll wear the perfect gowns and marry the perfect gentleman…that is, if the formerly disinherited brother of the man she intends to marry doesn’t ruin everything first.
Ethan Moore is a prize-fighting second son and proud founding member of the Spare Heirs Society—and that’s all he ever should have been. But, in an instant, his brother’s noble title is his, the eyes of the ton are upon him, and the lady he’s loved for years would rather meet him in the boxing ring than the ballroom.
He’s faced worse. With the help of his Spare Heirs brotherhood, Ethan’s certain he can get to the bottom of his brother’s unexpected demise and win the impossible lady who has haunted his dreams for as long as he can remember…
Elizabeth Michels grew up on a Christmas tree farm in rural South Carolina. After tip-toeing her way through school with her focus on ballet steps and her nose in a book, she met a boy and followed him a thousand miles away from home to Kansas City, Missouri, before settling down in North Carolina.
