Once Upon A Lie By Michael French Book Spotlight!

Once Upon A Lie
By Michael French
Genre: Mystery/Suspense

Once Upon a Lie is about two strangers who become unlikely friends, only to unintentionally put each other's life in jeopardy.  Jaleel Robeson, a gifted, eighteen year-old black man, falsely accused of murdering his father in a small Texas town, is on the run.  He assumes a new identity in 1980s Los Angeles as a successful student on his way to college. Alexandra Baten, a restless sixteen year old while girl, lives in a privileged Toluca Lake family but feels trapped by her parents' values.  One weekend, she rides her bike into a run down neighborhood, meeting a young black man selling lemonade.  Thus begins a friendship between opposites, at least on the surface, but they learn they have more in common than they imagine.  Told from each character's point of view in alternating chapters, we become involved in a gripping tale of two Americas where discontent and violence always lurk under the surface.  When they erupt, no one is safe.  Once Upon a Lie is both a family drama and a crime drama, as well as an exploration of interracial love, mother-daughter relationships, and redemption through courage.

Collateral Damage by Gwenan Haines Virtual Book Tour with #Giveaway!

For three years Laura Drake has watched Senator Pete Worthington promote a series of gorgeous women while she sits in a forgotten corner answering constituent letters on an outdated computer. When Worthington asks her to find an elusive file one Friday night he sets off a series of events that brands her as a killer and puts her life in jeopardy. The path she sets out on forces her to confront not only the nature of evil but the ghosts from her past that have never been set to rest.FBI Agent Dalton Ross transferred from Chicago to Washington to escape his own ghosts. When his investigation leads him to Laura he's torn between his desire to keep her safe and the need to protect his own heart. As the mystery that surrounds them deepens, Laura and Dalton race to save themselves and the nation from someone willing to sacrifice anything to protect a secret.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
Dalton checked his gun and opened the driver’s side door as quietly as possible. “Appearances can be deceiving.”
She opened her door too. “You leave me here, I’m gone when you get back.” She flashed an object in front of his face. “And I’ve got the key.”
“Do you have a death wish or something?” How had she managed to get hold of the key? He was sure he’d put it in his wallet, which was tucked away in the glove compartment. He would have remembered it if she’d opened it. “I thought you said you were dull.”
“I am.” She deposited the key down the front of her dress. “But I’m kinda getting the hang of this adventure thing.” A grin tugged at the corner of his mouth, but he suppressed it. She was charming, no doubt about that. And damn mysterious, too. As she stood there smiling with cat-like satisfaction, he had to resist the urge to take her in his arms and kiss her. Just the idea of pressing his lips to hers was making him hard. The trouble was Laura had no idea what she was up against. She thought of all this as an exciting change from her ordinary life. But this was real life, and real life was full of people whose sole purpose was to inflict as much pain as they possibly could. It was all too easy to go about one’s business without ever seeing the dark side of things—he’d done it for years, and in a way, he wished he could go back to being that twenty-year-old kid who signed up for an interview with the FBI mostly to impress his buddies. But after more than a decade spent hunting killers he knew that like all fairy-tales, the happily-ever-after of suburbia had its monsters.
In real life, people died.
Read an excerpt:
Conference Room
Hospital Administrator’s Offices
9:30 a.m.
Dr. Reed called and said that he wanted to update hospital leaders on his team’s findings and give further instructions. I called the operator and had her contact the Executive Committee, a governing body comprised of the department heads, committee chairmen, and all the assistant hospital administrators quarantined in the hospital. The group assembled within fifteen minutes. The two from the CDC were the only ones in the room in hazmat suits and helmets.
Dr. Reed gave his report: “Ebola virus was definitively diagnosed by electron microscopy.”
Everyone groaned, even though they knew before this report came in that it was Ebola. Then, he gave what he called the “good news.” The vast majority of the patients who had been in the hospital at the time of the explosion, as well as most of the doctors, nurses, and people in maintenance and facilities, were not exposed and could be released from quarantine to return to their homes. I began to applaud and the other members of the executive committee followed.
Reed was resuming his talk when my telephone rang. I looked to see that the caller was the Mayor’s Office. I answered in a quiet voice, “Dr. James.”
It was Mayor LaShaun Washington. “I know you are in a meeting with Dr. Reed and your staff. I’m going to call back in a minute on Skype so I can teleconference with your entire group.”
I paused for a moment to comprehend his demand, and hung up. I opened Skype on my computer. The large screen at the end of conference room went from black to a picture of Mayor Washington and a group of people sitting at a conference table.
The Mayor spoke: “Dr. James, you will recognize everyone in my panel, the Jackson City City Council, and of course the City Attorney, Ms. Marks.
“Dr. James. This conference is called into emergency session. Now, let’s get right to the point: Dr. James, did you receive a message from a terrorist group that mentioned ‘Ebola?’”
“What?”
“Dr. James: Did you, or did you not, receive a message from a known terrorist organization in the last twenty-four hours? The Jackson City Police have the article in their possession. You are a terrorist. You affiliate with terrorists, you’ve been the center of multiple attacks, and why the FBI has allowed you to carry on, purely in the interest of having another informant—”
“I am not a terrorist, sir!”
“Dr. James—you are out of order here. This is an emergency meeting. Let’s get to the second point, of which this body has just been informed: You are immune to Ebola. Is that correct?”
“What?”
Reed stepped forward and said through his mask, “We have not informed Dr. James of that yet. We just got the results. Frankly I’m a little shocked that you know.”
“I assure you Dr. Reed, this body will be involved in every aspect of this ongoing tragedy. Dr. James, we find it all just a little too convenient that the epidemic you have created here in the United States is something that you also just happen to be immune to—”
“I didn’t create anything!” I screamed. “What are you talking about! It’s Omar Farok! He’s doing all this!”
“Dr. James! That’s enough! That is enough! That is enough! Now … The FBI will be taking you into custody shortly. We are cooperating thoroughly in their investigation. This body is going to make sure that the federal authorities do the right thing and indict you for conspiracy. You are directly responsible for a number of terrorist attacks and your connection with certain cults is well known. The City Council has passed a binding resolution that relieves you of your position at The Jackson City Hospital. Permanently. We are also considering civil action against you and your group.”
“Why don’t you just banish me from the city! You’re a dictator, right?”
“Dr. James.”
“Just throw me out of my own home! You are a dictator, right?”
“Dr. James. That’s enough.”
I turned and looked at the scornful stares of my hospital staff. Many of these doctors had been my friends for many years. I had grown up with so many of them. But no one spoke a word in my defense.
Excerpt:
He smiled. “Just say thank you, and we’ll call it even.”
For a long moment, she stared at him, mouth agape, not sure if this was some sort of British humor she didn’t understand. Well, she supposed it didn’t cost her anything to give him what he wanted. “Thank you.”
His smile widened. “I thought American girls were all about, uhm,” he paused, his gaze sliding to her slightly parted lips, “…affectionate forms of appreciation.”
Abby exhaled. Did he really expect her to kiss him? Well, she wasn’t going to, no matter how many times her gaze wandered to his mouth. “I don’t know you, and you certainly don’t know me, Mr. —”
“Lord,” he corrected her with the slightest conceited bow. “Lord Rushwood.”
She resisted the urge to roll her eyes. “Pardon me. Lord Rushwood.”
“You may still call me Edmund.”
This time she brought her hands to her face, ready to let out a frustrated scream. He didn’t move as she parted her fingers and peeked through them. Growing more annoyed, she dropped her hands to her sides and squared her shoulders.
"I have thanked you…Edmund, so I will not be wrapping my arms around your neck and inviting you up for a night of, whatever you call it in England—”
“Rogering? Shagging?”
She closed her eyes and brought in a therapeutic breath. “Never mind,” she replied, trying to extinguish the blush spreading like a wildfire into her face.
Author Bio:
I was born in historical Appomattox, Virginia. After graduating from high school, I joined the military and served five years in the active duty Army. After leaving, I decided to go into the Ohio Air National Guard where I retired as a Master Sergeant in 2011. In case you were wondering, I have never flown a plane. After getting lost to the recruiter's office, I was highly discouraged from navigating one.
I admit, I am an avid Jane Austen fan and try to incorporate her in my books, in one way or another. This dream of writing, with Jane sometimes, is an exciting adventure that may take me as far as the stars or as close as my computer.
When I'm not writing, I'm spending time with my husband and two boys, ages 12 and 10. Without their sacrifice and understanding, I would have never been able to pursue my passion of writing or my accomplishment of becoming a published author.
No matter what I write and read, there ALWAYS has to be a happy ending.
BOOK TRAILER:
EXCERPT:
Chris rounded the stairs that led to the first level of his loft and looked out of the peep hole. Sure enough, it was his son’s mother and she looked lit up. He took a deep breath and opened the door.
She stumbled as the door swung open.
“Why are you knocking on my door at three o’clock in the morning?”
“Because I need to t-talk,” she stuttered, “to you!”
“No, Sandra, you need to go home. Where is Christopher?” he asked.
“Well, he ain’t gone be at the club with me!” she stated matter-of-factly. “So that was a dumb question.”
Chris sighed, unable to continue the dance they did at his front door. “Go home,” he said, and slammed the door in her face.
“Oh no you didn’t!” he heard her say from the other side of the door.
Boom! Boom! Boom! She beat on the door again and crossed her arms. “I’m not leaving until you talk to me, so you might as well come back to the door. I don’t care if your neighbors call the police. I will stand here until they arrive!”
Tiana pushed past Chris. He reached out and grabbed her arm to stop her.
“Look, this heffa ain’t going away, and I’m about to give her a piece of my mind. She’s ruining our night!”
“Baby, calm down, I got this.”
Tiana huffed. “I can’t tell!”
She pivoted on her heels and went to the kitchen. The banging on the door continued. She shook her head and ran her fingers through her hair. Looking in the cupboard she removed a wine glass and popped the cork on a bottle of Emmolo Merlot that had been sitting on ice since their earlier tryst. She rolled her eyes as she listened to Chris in the front room arguing with his son’s mother. This is the last thing she needed. She sipped from the glass and closed her eyes as the caramelized plum, brown spices and rich fruit flavor oozed down her throat. She took another swig; it was delicious, but what would’ve been better is if she could get back into bed with Chris.
“Enough of this,” she said.
Tiana made her way back to the living room where the couple was still arguing. She cleared her throat and stepped into view, letting her robe open just enough to show off her bare chest and panties. She took another swig of her wine as she watched a look of fury cross the woman’s face. Tiana almost laughed. Chris didn’t look amused, but he wouldn’t dare tell her otherwise.
“Baby, should I go? I don’t want to cause any trouble,” Tiana purred innocently.
Chris gave her a knowing look. He knew that she was aware that their argument had nothing to do with her. Tiana just wanted to make her presence known.
It's not about the war. It’s about the warrior.
Publication Date: March 6, 2016
Genre: Military Non-Fiction
Meet eight combat-injured men who sustained life-altering injuries. Read eight inspiring stories of heroism and the re-building of independent, productive and fulfilling lives after seemingly impossible circumstances.
This project looks at the struggles of these incredible men to reshape their lives after combat. It also sets these stories within the context of current veteran healthcare; injury, suicide, and disability statistics; and looks briefly at the impacts on the caregivers who support these men. Being face-to-face with combat-injured veterans has given me an insight that all Americans should have. Veterans of the Vietnam era began the process of opening our eyes to the grim realities that await veterans both psychologically and physically. These men’s stories show how much more we have to accomplish.
This book isn't about war or politics - it is about figuring out what it takes to move forward AFTER the war. I wrote this book to raise awareness of what our warriors need most when they return, what the government does and doesn't provide and why there is a high demand for private non-profits to fill the gaps. Make no mistake - we are in this period of recovery and rehabilitation for decades to come. It also introduces the non-profit organization Warrior Foundation~Freedom Station which has taken on the task of helping our combat-injured men and women make the daunting transition from military to civilian life. 100% of the proceeds benefit them in this much-needed labor of love.
It's not about the war. It’s about the warrior.
“I thought if I would just hang out in town they could not find me and inform me my son had been killed. As it turned out they did find me and the nightmare began.”
“The last thing I heard was, ‘Don't step there,’ and then a loud boom.”
“A few minutes later when they came back the corpsman got out of the truck, silent, covered in blood. I never processed that until after I got home. I just sat there, and I knew that it had happened but at the time it just didn’t feel real. That night was a solemn night. No one talked to each other. It woke us all up. Before that we had just been screwing up the Taliban. But now, it was like, oh – we died here – like you can die here.”
“I don’t know what the answer to the suicide epidemic is - I wish I knew. I just don’t understand it. I’ve lost so many people that I have become emotionless to death. I guess that’s part of the deal for a lot of us.”
“Now we just try to figure out how to do the same things we used to do – the same things people without missing limbs can do. It’s not that we can’t do it – it’s just that we have to figure out a modified way to do it. Everything we do is just a little bit harder.”
“I do this because some woman, somewhere, might pick up an article or a book and read this, and she might be at the end of her rope. Maybe she will read this and think her life isn’t so bad. Maybe she will read this and know she can go on, too.”
“My biggest fear is and will continue to be the what-ifs. What if he can’t get back up next time? What if he, too, becomes a statistic? What if I fail him? I believe that is a worry for many of us – the caregivers and the wives of war. War isn’t selective of its victims, and it doesn’t mind sharing its devastation. War is far reaching, and its ripple effect can range far beyond the battlefield.”
“Every combat veteran who makes it home unscathed thinks back to the ones who didn't come home or the ones who came back physically different. We feel that it should have been us instead.  I blamed myself for a few things and had some dark thoughts for a long time; I couldn't even talk to the Marines I had treated for injuries.  The invisible wounds are the hardest, and I know that each one of us struggle to deal with that in our own way.”
