A Family No More by Amy Quonce Spotlight with Excerpt and #Giveaway! @lovingthebook

How does a mother choose between her only two children?

Twelve-year-old Andrew Preston was highly intelligent and extremely cunning; typical or any other sociopath such as himself. While he loved to see how much he could get away with without being caught, he took his greatest pleasure in harming his autistic little sister, Megan.

The Children’s mother, Kate Rose, always went to great lengths to protect her kids, but things changed after Andrew confesses to the crime against his sister. Now she must try to figure out how to protect them both from the different sides of the courtroom. Suddenly plunged into a twisted justice system as the criminal case unfolds, Kate must choose between her daughter’s safety and the law.

After spending many years working in the education system in Upstate, New York, Amy Quonce moved across the map with her daughter and one very spoiled dog. She now spends her days writing from a hammock nestled between two palm trees and works as a Licensed Massage Therapist.

“Mrs. Rose, the doctor can see you now,” the tall receptionist with wavy black hair cascading half-way down her back called.
Kate put the magazine back on the shelf, picked up her purse, and walked toward Dr. Covington’s office as his ten o'clock appointment abruptly brushed past her on his way out. Tall, well groomed, and wearing an Armani Polo shirt and tan khakis, the child certainly presented himself well. At first glance, it would be hard for an outsider to discern there were issues of any kind. But as his mother, Kate knew looks could be deceiving.
Andrew didn't even glance in her direction as they passed but proceeded toward the waiting room in a casual strut. Kate turned her head to remind him to behave himself until she came back out, but he had already plopped himself down across from road-rage boy and took pleasure in helping him navigate toward unsuspecting pedestrians. Sighing, she followed the psychologist through the door. They walked silently into his office as if conversation at that point would be taboo.
Kate sat gingerly on the sleek black leather couch, biting her nails until the tender skin came exposed. Dr. Covington quietly looked over his notes before making eye contact.
"Mrs. Rose,” he began after review of the files, “I have been seeing Andrew three times a week for the past twelve weeks. In our time together, I have gotten to know him quite well. I can tell you one thing for sure; your son is very intelligent. Andrew can be charming, engaging, and is quite skilled in his verbal language.” He inhaled, as if what was coming next wasn't as easy to say. "But, I can also tell you there is a lot more hiding behind his fake smile. Your son is devious, manipulative, and has a preoccupation with violence. He displays no empathy toward others and avoids personal connections at all costs.”
The straight-forwardness of his remarks startled Kate. That's why we're hereYou're the leading child psychologist in the state. Please help our family.
Dr. Covington flipped back through his thick piles of notes he had accumulated through the past three months. "During our time together, I have gained Andrew's trust and he has confided some very disturbing things to me. Due to doctor/patient privilege, I cannot disclose what he has said, but I can tell you I am extremely concerned for your daughter, Megan."
The blood instantly drained from Kate’s face. Megan, who was two years younger than Andrew, had been diagnosed with high functioning autism at the age of three. This had sent them on an intense path of constant doctor appointments, as well as a spectrum of therapists who worked diligently with her in an attempt to get Megan on a level with other kids her age. With so much focus spent on her daughter’s needs, she knew Andrew had been vying for attention in mischievous ways. “What about her?” she whispered in fear.
Dr. Covington straightened himself in the chair as his face grew serious. “As I said before, all I can do is voice my concerns. You've told me Megan’s autism left her speechless for the first six years of life. This trademark silence gave Andrew plenty of opportunities to do as he pleased without concern of her telling on him.”
Kate’s hands shook as she buried her head within them. She was torn between wanting to know what went on during those silent years, and pretending Andrew would never hurt his little sister. It took her a few moments before she could look up and meet the doctor’s eyes. “What are you saying?” she asked, not really wanting to hear the answer.
Placing a gentle hand on hers, Dr. Covington continued. “Mrs. Rose, Andrew is cruel and aggressive. His behaviors are combined with a self-righteous approach to getting his needs met. He has significant psychiatric concerns, and his willingness to harm others has left him void of empathy, compassion, and without significant attachments.”
“What can I do to help him?” Kate pleaded.
Dr. Covington sighed and shook his head. “We're doing all we can, but his progress in therapy has been minimal. I’m sorry to say this Mrs. Rose, but your child shows all the classical signs of being a sociopath. One day he’s going to do something that will land him at the mercy of the court system. My best guess is that he won't get the level of help he truly needs until then.”

The Clean Sweep Conspiracy by Chuck Waldron Spotlight with #Giveaway@writebymebooks @iReadBookTours

Book Description for The CleanSweep Conspiracy:

Matt Tremain publishes Verité, a modest blog dedicated to writing about the truth and exposing scams. Currently, he’s following up on rumors concerning something called CleanSweep, a mysterious project in Toronto, Canada.

Matt gets his break when a whistleblower connects CleanSweep to billionaire Charles Claussen. Claussen plans to rid Toronto of undesirables, beginning with street people and extending to any citizens who don’t match Claussen’s restrictive screening matrix.

With the help of a high-ranking government official, Claussen plans to incite riots and violent unrest, conning Torontonians into sacrificing privacy and civil liberties for illusionary security and safety. Toronto will be reduced to a repressive city-state.

The information overwhelms Matt, who doubts he has the courage, skill, or readership to take on CleanSweep. But the murder of his source convinces the blogger to take a stand—although he’s too late to prevent chaos from gripping Toronto’s streets.

To get the word out, Matt’s going to need allies. He may have found some in a Toronto police detective and a local TV reporter pursuing the same story—presuming they aren’t allied with Claussen. If they are, Matt’s going to become yet another victim of CleanSweep, and the truth will be buried forever.

Author's Bio:

Born in Iowa, Chuck Waldron lived in Ontario, Canada, before relocating to Florida’s Treasure Coast. Over the years, he’s held many jobs. The ones he can mention in print include US Army soldier, truck driver, office manager, mailman, real estate salesman, social worker, hardware store clerk, and shuttle driver.

Fate played a crucial role when he walked into his first writing class, and he still honors the memory of the teacher, Henrietta. She gave him permission to write. That—along with countless writing groups, classes, seminars, and much sweat—has resulted in over fifty short stories and four novels.

Waldron often likes to pretend interest, lacks perseverance, and could generally use a good talking to—until it comes to his writing, that is. He and his wife Suzanne reside in Port St. Lucie, Florida. While keeping an eye out for hurricanes, alligators, and Burmese pythons, he’s busy writing his next novel

965 BCE
Upon the death of his father, Solomon has been appointed king of the united monarchy of Israel and Judah and charged with building the Temple of the Lord in Jerusalem. He travels to Egypt to negotiate with Pharaoh Psusennes II for gold for the temple and to improve relations between the two nations. There he falls in love with the pharaoh’s beautiful daughter, Nicaule, and the two kings agree to an arranged marriage. Against her will, for she loves another, Nicaule follows her new husband to Israel.
Forty years later, Solomon’s empire is on the verge of collapse. Power has made him arrogant, permissive, and blind to the scheming of his wife and one of his lieutenants to topple the united monarchy. As the king’s faith falters and his people’s morals collapse, enemies gather at the gates of Israel. A visit from a mysterious queen restores Solomon’s perspective in time to save his soul—but it is too late to preserve his kingdom.
Someone who once was loyal to King Solomon has come back to claim the crown of Israel—and tear Solomon’s empire asunder.

Night came swiftly to the valley of Jezreel. Basemath sat on a worn carpet on the ground of her prison-tent, knees gathered to her chest. Even in spring, the night’s breath was frigid as it blew across the open valley. A chill traveled down her spine, as much a response to the cold as to the fate that awaited her.
Though it would have offered her comfort, she refused the blanket that had been placed in the tent for her use. She recognized the coarse weave of the wool, striped in faded blue and violet and fringed on the ends, as the work of her people. She wondered which house Shoshenq’s men had pillaged and from whose bed they had plucked it. She imagined the inhabitants, ordinary folk judging by the quality of their textiles, being driven from their house, if they survived at all, scattering from their towns like ants, frightened and stripped of everything. She viewed the stolen blanket as a symbol of their suffering and left it be, for accepting it would feel like a betrayal.
She was grateful for this: her bindings had been cut. She pushed the long trumpet sleeve of her gown back and regarded the bloodied skin of her wrists, scraped raw by the jute. It stung no more than the humiliation of being taken prisoner.
The tent of her captivity was barely big enough for four people to stand upright, shoulder to shoulder. It was made of woven goat hair strips that had been stitched together to make a broad cloth and secured to the ground with wooden pegs. A branch of olive wood held up the ceiling. A meager flame burning in a clay saucer lamp flickered against the tent walls, casting long shadows in the semidark.
Basemath heard a man clear his throat outside her tent and realized she was being guarded. Her face tightened. This was a foil to her plan to exit the tent in the thick of night and search for her daughter. Even if it cost her life, she was determined to save Ana’s. The thought of her precious child in that heathen’s hands ignited a fury she did not recognize in herself. Anger and violence were not her way. But if it came to that, she would disembowel the Egyptian before seeing him strip the girl of her purity.
She inhaled deeply to let the rage simmer down. She needed her wits about her. She stood and walked to the flap covering the tent door. She peered through a slit and gazed at the sky. The full moon hung low above the horizon; she was facing east. She parted the fabric ever so slightly, hoping her movements would go undetected.
It was a fool’s hope. The guard noticed right away and pointed his spear at her, barking something in a dialect she did not recognize. He was a tall man of great girth, whose eyes shone with a murderous glint.
She did not retreat. “My thirst is great. I want a cup of water.”
He jabbed the air with his spear, urging her back inside.
She stood her ground, staring into his eyes, two obsidian marbles that seemed devoid of intelligence. “Bring me water.”
The tip of his spear touched her ribs. He spat out more words. When again she did not move, he twisted the spear.
She heard the linen of her gown rip and felt a sting. She glanced down and saw blood seeping slowly from the flesh wound. “You are godless,” she hissed in Hebrew.
“He is merely carrying out orders.” A male voice came from the shadows.
Basemath was surprised to hear Hebrew spoken in the enemy camp. She watched the guard’s reaction to the invisible intruder. He didn’t flinch.
“Who are you?” she asked, uneasy. “Show your face.”
He stepped into view. In the blackness of night, she could make out the lines of his halug, the long tunic that identified him as an Israelite. The decorations on the garment—a metal belt cinching the waist and embroidered trim along the sleeves, hem, and neckline—betrayed his status. She could barely see his face.
“Hello, Princess.” He edged forward. “It has been long years since we last met.”
Basemath froze when she realized who stood before her. There had been rumblings about the traitor’s return to Israel after he had been driven out of the country for masterminding a rebellion against her father. She attempted to speak, but the words were trapped in the cage of shock.
“Aren’t you going to greet your future king?

Praise for D.J. Niko
“Like a sandstorm roaring out of the Judean Desert, The Riddle of Solomon rips readers out of the familiar world, dropping them breathless in a place where ancient kings still keep their secrets. D. J. Niko’s storytelling carries the grit of desert dust and the seductive scent of incense on every page as Sarah Weston races with a madman to save the treasures that King Solomon left behind.” - Mary Anna Evans, award-winning author of Artifacts and Wounded Earth
"Take a dash of Dan Brown, a sprinkle of Raiders of the Lost Ark, and a whole lot of originality, and you've got the recipe for D.J. Niko's latest novel, the second in the spellbinding Sarah Weston saga. For readers who like their adventures steeped in research, authenticity, and nonstop intrigue, The Riddle of Solomon is highly recommended!" - Ronald Malfi, author of Floating Staircase and Cradle Lake
“Action, adventure, romance and historical mystery—who could ask for more? The Oracle is a great read.” —James O. Born, award-winning author of Scent of Murder
“Although each book in the Weston series can be read as a stand-alone, there is clearly a story arc involving the series’ two lead characters, one that enriches each book and makes the series more than just a collection of independent thrillers.” David Pitt, Booklist
“This wonderful action-adventure story has all the elements of Indiana JonesTomb Raider and a little James Bond thrown in for good measure. This is exactly the kind of story I love, and I found it very hard to put down. The story moves between the fall of Delphi and a modern-day archeology thriller. Well researched, well written, with strong and believable characters.” — LibraryThing

Excerpt:

The light jumped and twirled, spinning until wisps formed the body of a large bird. Graceful ribbons of orange and yellow light laced together, taking the shape of wings and a trailing crown of feathers almost as vivid as the long red and gold tail.
Black eyes and a beak faced them before the bird took flight. It soared across the breeze and flew around the trees. Ethereal and shining, the bird plummeted through the leaves, shaking branches all the way down. Small birds squawked and fled their nests, disappearing into the dark.
The bird swooped low towards Jace's knees, knocking him back. It circled Jace, the delicate feathers of light sweeping across his cheeks, casting him in a soft red glow. Jace's gaze glimmered with awe as the bird shot towards the sky and winked out of existence. Small particles of light sprinkled the forest like pixie dust.
In the raining red and yellow light, Jace pulled Roan close by the collar and kissed him. There was nothing gentle in it, only raging passion.
Roan pulled Jace back by the waist and leaned against a tree, their ragged breaths deafening him. Maybe one day they'd have more. Maybe one day…
Leaves crunched. Whispers caught on the breeze. The air wafted, carrying the odour of sweat and chemical fumes.
Roan pushed Jace back. The hair on Roan's neck stood on end.
A dark figure launched towards them from the darkness. An unmarked metal canister hit the ground at Roan's feet.
Smoke burst forth, engulfing Roan's body.
"Hands behind your head," voices yelled, followed by clicks. "Hands up behind your head! Get on your knees!"
"Roan?" Jace called, grappling Roan's arms in the thick smoke. "What's going on?"
Roan hacked and gagged, swatting the smoke away. He couldn't see Jace—he couldn't even see his own feet through his irritated eyes.
"Roan!" Jace's fingernails dug into Roan's wrist as his grip slipped down Roan's forearms. "Don't let them take me!"
Jace's hands ripped away from Roan's arm.
"Get on your knees," voices commanded again. A sharp object rammed Roan's knee, bashing his kneecap.
Yelping, Roan fell. Through the dissipating smoke, soldiers in black uniforms and masks rushed at him, their assault rifles aimed at his head and heart. Military. The governtary. No!
He struggled to stand. Lunging forward, he struck at the blurred faces.
A rifle slammed down on his wrists before the butt of the gun smashed his jaw.
"Down on the ground, Ven," a soldier demanded, threatening to hit Roan again.
"Roan!" Jace screamed from behind them.
On instinct, Roan stared past the soldiers to the faint light from a headlamp. Even with burning retinas, he could see Jace in the hold of Kai and Vera, two sentries from Clan Teach. Moham's guards and friends. Kai's tall, broad body seized Jace by the waist while Vera's lithe form fought Jace's arms. They hauled Jace back, navigating towards the camp settlement.
"Jace." Roan stepped towards him. Gun muzzles jabbed him back.
Jace fought back, kicking Kai's shins and hitting Vera's face. "Let me go! I'm not the one they're attacking, you idiots. Go save him!" He raked Kai's arms and punched Vera's chest.
Kai smacked Jace in the neck, stunning Jace.
"Last time, lab elf. Hands. Head. Now!" The soldier in front of Roan jammed the gun to Roan's groin.
Groaning, Roan collapsed in surrender. Soldiers jerked his arms as they clamped cold metal cuffs over his injured wrists. They yanked him up and pushed him in the opposite direction of the settlement, his hands hanging limp in front of him.
"Don't let them take you," Jace hollered. "Don't leave me."
Roan spun on his heel. In the distance, barely visible in the light from Kai's helmet, Kai and Vera dragged Jace, hitting him as he continued to struggle. Jace wrenched one arm free, reaching for Roan with an open palm.
A strangled cry escaped Roan's throat. He reached towards Jace, clawing air.
Then darkness separated them completely.
