Background
At the beginning of the story, we are introduced to Scott as Kal’s mother’s lover. This comes as a surprise to Kal because her mother hadn’t told her. He’s good looking, in good shape, a successful entrepreneur making millions. When Scott says he’s in love with Alesha, Kal sees that he isn’t lying but what he says doesn’t make sense to her. Why didn’t Kal’s mother tell her about Scott?
His Temperament
Scott is concerned about Alesha. He hires a private agency to locate her. When Kal tells him she feels she’s being followed, he wants to arrange a bodyguard for her.
It seems that Alesha has told Scott a lot about Kal. Scott knows about her early life, her school days, her triumphs and difficulties. He seems perfect – loving, concerned, perfectly dressed and not a hair out of place. Even his office is pristine. So why are the hairs standing up on the back of Kal’s neck?
Kal’s father taught her how to read people. There’s one type of person her father called a ‘master trickster’. A master trickster is the king at the poker table- the one who gives no clues away. Someone who’s so adept at concealment, he can evade detection. Is that Scott, or is Scott truly genuine? Maybe Kal’s jealousy is getting the better of her? Kal and Alesha have a favourite city in India. Is Kal simply jealous that Alesha took Scott there?
A bit more detail
I enjoyed creating the character of Scott because he’s so convincing. He seems flawless. But no one can by flawless, can they? In fact, some people might create such a convincing persona, to conceal something very deep and very dark. So that they can live an ordinary life on the surface, but who they really are is kept underground, under wraps, because it’s so deviant. But then how can you detect them? How can you out-trick them? Sometimes these people are so clever that just as you think you’ve outsmarted them, just as you think you’ve stalked them so cleverly, you turn around to find them stalking you.
Final Comments
Scott believes he’s the king, superior to everyone and able to out-smart those around him. He has the power and the influence of the Syndicate to back him up. Kal is smart too but has she met her match?
