Length: 8 hrs and 18 mins

Publisher's Summary

Seattle yoga instructor Kate Davidson often acts more like a champion fighting rooster than the Dalai Lama. When she's not teaching yoga, she spends her time hiding from her creepy landlord and dodging her best friend's relentless matchmaking attempts. Even though her father was a cop, Kate has zero crime fighting aspirations. She has enough trouble keeping her struggling yoga business afloat while trying to live up to yoga's Zen-like expectations.
Then she stumbles over a body in the studio's parking lot.
The police dismiss the murder as drug-related street crime, but Kate knows that George - a homeless alcoholic she had befriended-was no drug dealer. And if the police won't take his murder seriously, she'll just have to solve the crime herself. After all, "Drunk Dies in Drug Deal Gone Bad at Yoga Studio" isn't exactly the free publicity she's been hoping for.
Kate stretches herself and takes on two new challenges. First, solve George's murder. Second, find someone-anyone-willing to adopt his intimidating, horse-sized German shepherd, Bella, before Animal Control sends her to the big dog park in the sky.
But with Bella's time almost up and the murderer hot on her trail, Kate will have to work fast. Or the next time she practices Corpse Pose, it may be for real.

REVIEWS

“Weber’s debut, which launches the Downward Dog series, should appeal to anyone who likes canines, yoga, and a determined sleuth. ... Cozy fans will eagerly await the next installment.” Publishers Weekly

“Weber’s debut fits into that newest of intriguing niches, what I call “extreme cozies.” While the yoga and the animal rescue (and a potential romance, of course) neatly fit the amateur sleuth mold, Weber breaks new ground with her protagonist’s desire to remedy a social ill, in this case, urban homelessness. The series has tremendous potential, particularly with Kate’s BFF’s humorous help, and some seriously good yoga tips.” Terry Jacobsen Library Journal

“What a treat! A charming heroine, a cantankerous pooch, and a clever page-turner of a mystery make for delightfully original entertainment. You don’t need to love yoga to love this series—its good karma makes it an instant winner.” Hank Phillippi Ryan THE WRONG GIRL (Forge)

“Make room on the cozy mystery bandwagon—there’s a new dog in town! Cozy mystery readers will love the soft-hearted, self-deprecating yoga teacher and her German shepherd sidekick in Tracy Weber’s debut, Murder Strikes a Pose.” Lucy Burdette TOPPED CHEF (Signet)

“Weber’s debut novel is a yogalicious romp. She mixes yoga with sleuthing and the perils of second-time-around dating into a compelling, inviting read.” Maggie Toussaint DIME IF I KNOW (Five Star/Cengage)

“Kate Davidson’s pluck, humor, and determination make her a welcome addition to the ranks of amateur sleuths. Reading Murder Strikes a Pose made me want to study yoga. It also left me hoping for a sequel so that I can visit with Kate and Bella again.” Laurien Berensen GONE WITH THE WOOF (Kensington)

Murder Strikes a Pose, by Tracy Weber, is a delightful debut novel featuring Kate Davison, a caring but feisty yoga teacher who’s recently opened her own business, Serenity Yoga. When Kate meets a homeless man named George and his loud but loving German shepherd Bella, life in her colorful Seattle neighborhood turns upside down (or dare I say Downward Dog...). Namaste to Weber and her fresh, new heroine!” Penny Warner HOW TO DINE ON KILLER WINE (Obsidian/Penguin)

“When a good dog seems to go bad, a yoga teacher comes to the rescue in this charming debut mystery. Murder Strikes a Pose pieces together a skillful collage of mystery, yoga, and plenty of dog stories against the unique backdrop of Seattle characters and neighborhoods. The delightful start of a promising new series. I couldn’t put it down!” Waverly Fitzgerald DIAL C FOR CHIHUAHUA (Kensington)

“We hope to see more Downward Dog Mysteries. Our judges thoroughly enjoyed reading this murder/mystery/suspense manuscript. The writing is fresh, the story is relevant on several levels, and the suspense keeps the pages turning. A hands down winner!” Chanticleer Book Reviews

“Three woofs for Tracy Weber’s first Downward Dog Mystery, Murder Strikes a Pose. Great characters, keep-you-guessing plot, plenty of laughs, and dogs—what more could we want? Ah, yes – the next book!” Sheila Webster Boneham DROP DEAD ON RECALL (Midnight Ink)

Monster Mash Book Blitz Countdown Event! Day #3

Denise is a Southern girl who has lived in Louisiana all her life, and yes, she has a drawl. She has a wonderful husband and two incredible children, who not only endure her writing moods, but also encourage her to indulge her writing passion. Besides writing romantic suspense, she enjoys traveling, reading, and cooking.

Accounting is a skill she has learned to earn a little money to support her writing habit. She wrote her first story when she was a teen, seventeen handwritten pages on school-ruled paper and an obvious rip-off of the last romance novel she had read. She's been writing off and on ever since, and with more than a few full-length manuscripts already completed, she has no desire to slow down.

Q&A With the Author:

1.  Describe yourself in 50 words or less.

I’ve lived in Louisiana all her life, and yes, I have a drawl. I’m an accountant two days a week, and a writer every single moment of my life. With so many story ideas crowding my mind, I have no desire to mute the voices in my head.

2. What do you love most in the world?
I love my family more than anything. Without their encouragement, I would have never dared to pursue my dreams. They are my heart and soul.

3. What do you fear most?

I’ve never been afraid of dying, but I am afraid of not living long enough to do everything I want to do before I die.

Content with the direction her life takes…

The temptation to earn a sweet payday and collect enough money to start her own interior design business is too much opportunity for Sophia Cannon to ignore, but working for her new client, Les Wakefield, is like working for a creepy stalker. He seems to be everywhere she goes.

Until trouble walks around the corner and into her life again…

Dylan Hunter almost turns down the Wakefield Manor restoration job until Les Wakefield tells him Sophia is the interior designer hired to oversee furnishing the old plantation house. Sophia has been the ghost in his life since the day she left him, haunting his heart with her memory every day and every night.

Stirring up more than just the spirits of the dead…

Sophia and Dylan fight with each other until a much bigger threat puts both their lives in danger. Discovering that generations of Wakefields have restored the plantation only to disappear months after moving in to the manor house stirs up spirits that would rather remain undisturbed.

Can love survive the long nights at Wakefield Manor with the unmistakable scent of gardenias hanging so heavily in the air?

Snippet:

The dirt track wound through a stand of centuries-old oak trees hung with draping wisps of gray-blue-green Spanish moss. Like dark sentinels with drawn swords, the trees arched their limbs over the newlyweds as they drove deeper and deeper into the heart of the plantation.
On a humid, south Louisiana evening, the moisture-heavy air rushed through the open windows and expanded in the interior of the car. A trail of sweat rolled down Celia Wakefield’s backbone. She shivered as the first glimpse of the house came into view, and the meal she’d consumed miles up the road rumbled in the lower regions of her stomach. Despite the heat, chill bumps prickled on her forearms. An inexplicable reaction, really.
She glanced at her husband Les out of the corner of her eye and cringed. An intense tightness defined his jaw line, which meant he was in one of his dark moods.
His fingers curled around the steering wheel. “There’s no telling what condition the main house will be in when we get there.”
He had warned her of its disrepair repeatedly since the day he first told her that he’d inherited the old Wakefield Plantation. It was as if he was apologizing in advance for the state of their first home. She had, of course, wanted something newer, but beggars couldn’t be choosers. She was lucky Les Wakefield had found her appealing enough to overlook her past.

Blurb:

The invasion has begun, and he’s the only one who can stop them.
Zephyr Cree has made it his mission to stop the aliens that have been terrorizing the galaxy. He takes his warship to the planet Earth to rescue what he can of the human race. But when he meets a human, Addison Montgomery, he is inspired by her tenacity, and maybe just a little bit smitten with the gorgeous human. The last thing he needs is a distraction, but fate has other things in mind for him.
Stranded in a remote location during an alien invasion was the last thing Addison Montgomery expected when she ventured out on a fieldtrip with a bus full of second graders. Daughter of one of the top generals in the country everyone is turning to her for answers. It’s a role she didn’t ask for and doesn’t want, but she knows she has to protect everyone she can. When the dangerous aliens attack, Addison prepares to fight them, but at the last minute a fiery phoenix swoops in to save the day -- literally. There’s not just one alien species on the planet but two. Now she just has to convince the hot phoenix shifter, Zephyr, to help her save the world, while keeping her libido in check around him, no big deal, right?

Read Excerpt One...

Zephyr stiffened as Addison shifted, moving so her head was on his shoulder. The couch was small and he half expected her to sit up and move away from him to finish watching the movie, but she didn’t. He peered down at her. Her eyes were shut and her breathing steady. It appeared she was sleeping and he’d wager she had no clue about her precarious situation against him. He didn’t mind her weight or closeness. It was nice. She smelled like honey and the berries they’d shared earlier. It was an intoxicating smell and he couldn’t help but study her features more closely now that she wouldn’t be aware of his staring. Physically, she looked similar to the women of his planet, but there was something different about her. She was resilient, yet passionate and she knew exactly what she wanted. Unlike many of the people on his planet, he suspected she didn’t follow orders unless she wanted to. He was one of the few people that challenged the government on Delphi, asking them to do more about the Imanji threat. That was probably part of the reason they allowed him to have his ship—to shut him up. Deep down he suspected they knew he was right. The Imanji were his people’s problem. Just because they couldn’t penetrate Delphi’s shields, didn’t mean they wouldn’t return one day and attempt to destroy the planet. The second time around the Imanji might succeed. Addison jumped as one of the characters in the movie screamed. She shot up so fast her forehead collided with his. A curse escaped her lips and she smacked a hand over her eyes, rubbing her palm over her skin as she blinked. “Are you okay?” he asked as he watched her. “Yeah. I’m so sorry. I didn’t even realize I fell asleep,” she said as she dropped her hand to her lap. “Are you okay?” “I’m fine.” The bump hadn’t fazed him at all. Addison shifted to the opposite end of the couch, pulling her feet up on her cushion and leaning against the armrest. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to invade your space.” “It’s okay. No apology is needed.” Part of him wondered if it’d be okay to tell her he enjoyed it. He had no idea how she would respond to that. “So, what did I miss?” Addison said turning her focus to the TV. “Not much.” He opened his mouth to tell her about the movie, but stopped when she moved again and sat up straighter. “Jeesh, the movie barely started and I already fell asleep? I must be more tired than I realized,” she said as she combed a hand through her hair. “Maybe I should head off to bed. We have a big day tomorrow.” He stood and grabbed the remote. His eyes scanned over the symbols, but he had no idea how to work it. He turned to her and offered a smile. “How do you turn it off?” She waved her hand at him as she got close enough for their shoulders to brush against each other. “You just hit this button and it will turn everything off.” She touched a button that had a circle on it. “But don’t turn it off on my account. I’ve seen Terminator before. You might enjoy it.” It seemed like an all right movie, but he didn’t feel like watching it without her. “No. I should turn in, too.” “Oh, okay, then,” she said, leaning in close again to turn off the TV. Her scent hit him again and he breathed it in. His phoenix rumbled beneath the surface, begging him to reach out and touch her. His bird craved Addison, and it hadn’t needed a woman in a long time. He didn’t fraternize with the women on his ship. It was too complicated and none of them caught his interest, not like Addison had. “There,” she said as she turned to him. Her breath caught in her throat as she too must have noticed how close their mouths were. Her tongue darted out to lick her lips. “I should probably go to bed,” she swallowed not letting her gaze leave his. “Addison?” he asked as he reached out to touch her cheek. Her skin was soft beneath his fingers, which he trailed over her jaw, caressing his thumb over her lips. “Yeah,” she said her voice so quiet he barely heard it. He moved his thumb and pressed his lips against hers. She gasped into his mouth, but her hands went to his shoulders as her tongue swooped out to trail over his teeth.

Read Excerpt Two...

Addison opened her mouth, but her voice got caught in her throat as footsteps thundered up the wooden steps and across the front porch. Nausea rolled in her belly and she shivered. Whipping her head toward the door, she held her breath. Her ears strained to hear if the children were fleeing, but the only sound greeting her was the staccato of her roaring pulse. As the doorknob silently twisted, she lifted her arm up, ready to jab the blade into whomever came in. She glanced at Marcus, wordlessly agreeing to do whatever was necessary to keep the others safe. The wooden deck outside creaked and Addison’s breath caught in her throat as the door flew open and slammed against the opposite wall. She whirled around, shrieking as her blade sunk into yellowish skin. The alien’s red eyes widened as it squawked. Its arm reached up, grasping at her chest and propelling her backward. She tried to hold onto the knife embedded in the alien for balance, but she couldn’t. Her feet flew out from under her as she catapulted across the room, hitting a glass case. Crashing through it, she sent glass raining down around her as she met the unforgiving floor, grunting as the hardwood bit into her. Ignoring the pain slicing through her extremities, she grasped a jagged piece of glass and scrambled to her feet. Her vision blurred and she blinked rapidly to get her eyes to focus. I have to fight. “S-s-s-stop!” A voice hissed. Addison gasped as the voice echoed in her mind. Her limbs froze, refusing to budge. She whimpered and tried to force her foot to move; it shook from exertion, but lifted off the floor. “Stop.” The voice insisted again. Addison gripped her head with her free hand as the voice bounced around in her mind. Don’t listen to them! She squeezed the long shard of glass hard enough for it to cut into her skin. Fight, Addison! A shiver raced up her spine as she took another step forward. Her leaden body was fighting her every move, almost as if the aliens were controlling her somehow. That is not possible, is it? Her eyes searched for Marcus, finding her co-worker kneeling before two of the creatures with his fingers laced behind his head. “I love the defiant ones,” the voice said, as an alien cocked its head at her while approaching. She wanted to continue to move, but her body seemed to be rooted to the floor. Addison opened her mouth to cry out, but no sound came. She looked at the alien in front of her more closely. It was slender and taller than she expected and stood at least a foot over her. Its blood-red eyes bore into her as its voice spoke within her mind again. “Tell me, how many of you are there?” the alien asked. His voice raced through her mind and her mouth opened, as if ready to tell him everything he asked. Addison tried clamping her mouth shut and gritted her teeth. I’m not telling him anything. “Answer me!” Coercion swept over her, but she maintained her silence. The longer she fought, the greater of a chance the kids and the others had to get away. Every second counted. The alien reached out and touched her cheek, trailing his long, scaly finger down her face. Addison screamed as she lifted her arm and tried to jab the glass into the alien’s chest. He caught her wrist, wrenching it to the side, causing the glass to fall to the floor. She tried to tug her hand free of his grasp, but he held tight. “It’s been a long time since I found someone so defiant,” he told her as he grasped her chin. “I shall enjoy breaking you.” He dug his fingers into her chin, causing her to close her eyes. Her jaw ached as he squeezed tighter and she tried to wrench free. “Tell me how many of you are there?” She gathered spittle in her mouth and spat it at the alien. He flinched as it trickled down his face. Gazing up at him defiantly, she noticed a lime green goo oozing from his chest. Is that blood? Yes, yes it is. This is the one I stabbed. Unfortunately, it didn’t appear to be fazing him at all. If a blade to the chest didn’t hurt them, what would? Faster than she could see, his hand holding her chin whipped up and struck her. She toppled to the floor as pain sliced through her skull. Sticky warmth coated her cheek and her vision darkened. No. No. No. Don’t you dare black out! “Stop! Please. I’ll tell you what you need to know. Just leave her alone, please!” Marcus pleaded, his voice sounding miles away even though she was sure he was still in the room with her. “No,” she said, forcing her gaze to focus. She wobbled as she tried to sit up. The ground around her seemed to be vibrating. Everything was spinning. How hard had he hit her? She needed to focus and fast. The alien turned, trudging away from her. “Marcus, no,” she said her voice coming out weaker than she’d intended. Her arms trembled as she tried to get to her hands and knees to crawl across the floor toward him. Marcus met her apprehensive eyes with his and shook his head at her. “I’m sorry, Addison. I can’t let them hurt you.” “No…you…don’t understand,” she said, fighting for a breath and to stay conscious. Yet the more she moved, the worse her head hurt and the more her vision waned. “Tell me. How many of you are there?” the alien asked Marcus. “Twelve adults and sixty-two children,” his monotone voice echoed throughout the room. “Very good.” The alien nodded at his men. All the other aliens darted out the door while the lead creature glanced back at her, a wide smile on his face, his black teeth projecting his complacency. As he turned back to Marcus, he raised his hand and placed it on Marcus’ brow. Addison scrambled across the floor to help, but he seemed to be miles away even though she was sure it was just a few feet. Marcus howled as a white light encompassed him. As the light permeated his body, it began to flake away, like leaves blowing in the wind. “No! Stop!” she cried out. Her heart pounded as she pushed herself to stand. It was too late though; Marcus’ body was nothing more than a pile of white ash on the floor. She covered her mouth as tears welled in her eyes. The alien turned back to her, the wide smile still plastered on his face. He took a step toward her knowing his ensuing move. Oh my God. I’m next.

Book Excerpt:

Wipeout!

Jacob Kent stepped out of his car as he scanned the fair on the other side of the parking lot, his heart pounding. As with many country fairs, the parking lot was no more than an abused pasture. This one was about the size of two football fields. Fair employees decked in bright yellow directed the early trickle of cars to their temporary berths. Jacob ignored them, choosing instead a parking spot near the exit. Anticipating the possible need for a quick getaway outweighed a pimply teen’s futile attempts to redirect him.
He regarded the rides twirling and spinning above and around the strolling families. Despite the morning sun, the lights flashed merrily, beckoning to all. At 11 a.m. it wasn’t crowded, but he knew that would soon change. Locking his car, he slowly picked his way through the beaten grass, combing all directions for a clue the girls were there. As the unmistakable sound of carnival music floated toward him on the warm summer breeze, he reviewed his plan.
First, he would walk through the fair to familiarize himself with the layout they had printed out. Then he would adjust their escape route to where he parked the car. After assessing the grounds, he would plant himself somewhere along the concourse, and watch the crowd. That’s how he had always found Casey in the past, and that’s how he was going to find her again.
A voice came over the loudspeaker, momentarily dimming the carnival noise. “Would the owner of a red ford truck, license plate AIP537, please return to your vehicle? Your lights are on.”
Jacob tensed. Was that some kind of clue? He looked over the parking lot. No, he could see the lights of the red truck from here. He smiled ruefully to himself.
Get a grip, Kent, he thought as he watched a portly balding man march exasperatedly toward the truck.
He sighed. Intellectually, he had to acknowledge they might have pieced together a bunch of randomly forgotten items into a fantastical story, but emotionally, he couldn’t help but believe the items served an ultimate purpose. If The Herd was here, he was going to find them. He also knew if he wasn’t careful, he could spend the entire day jumping at shadows and following dead ends.
Like that little commotion over by the edge of the fair. To his over-active imagination, that game of tag could look like a child trying to escape from the evil clutches of—
“HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, WIPEOUT!” sang out over the loudspeaker.
His head jerked up. As the pounding drums from the familiar song drowned out the carnival music, all doubt was erased. The loudspeaker was sending out a warning. His eyes darted back toward the commotion he had noticed. That was no game of tag. That was a child trying to escape a man in hot pursuit. Jacob couldn’t be positive at this distance, but it sure looked like Robin.
With his heart in his throat, he broke into a run, zigzagging between cars, trying to intercept the fleeing child as it headed toward the side of the parking lot. In this surreal moment, the same song they had used for obstacle course training was being piped out like background music to a scene in a movie. But this scene was real, where a real menace was gaining. Caught in his own nightmare, Jacob was watching Robin run for her life, and he was not close enough to help.
As the predator and prey crossed the area between the fair and the parking lot, the longer legs of the adult closed the gap between them, but once they reached the cars, the advantage became hers. Robin’s small size and training put some distance between them as she dodged around vehicles. However, her constant change of direction made it difficult for Jacob to maintain a course of interception.
Watching Robin’s progress, Jacob realized she was trying to head back toward the fair. Silently applauding Robin’s decision to get closer to other people who could help her, Jacob altered his course accordingly.
So did Robin’s pursuer.
Suddenly, her stalker eliminated the space between them by clambering up and over two pickup trucks, and landing an arm’s length away. Skidding, Robin veered around another vehicle with the man on her tail. As Jacob frantically tried to reach her, a brunette Sam suddenly popped out from behind a car and neatly took the man out with one magnificent sweep of a skateboard to the head.
Where did she come from? A stunned Jacob skidded to a stop, gasping for breath, his chest burning.
With a quick high-five, the sisters raced back to the fair. Jacob tried in vain to get their attention, but he hadn’t quite recovered enough breath to formulate sounds louder than gasps. He shook his head as he tried to calm the burning in his lungs. He was a wreck, but they were able to run off.
And I was going to save them? He weakly chuckled. What was I thinking?
Sobering, he trotted over to the man who was staggering to his feet. With rage marshalling all of his strength, Jacob drew back and smashed his fist into the man’s face. The unexpected pain in his fist was nothing compared to the satisfaction of watching Robin’s former threat drop like an anchor.
Shaking the pain out of his hand, Jacob aimed a vindictive kick at the ribs of his girls’ attacker. Any qualms he might ordinarily have about hitting a man when he’s down were nonexistent when it came to someone threatening his family.
Satisfied the man was no longer a danger, he took off in the direction he had seen his girls disappear, trying to calm the fear rising in his chest. He doubted this man had come alone. The girls probably knew that, too, and would be hiding. How was he going to find them before their pursuers did?
The light glinting off the speaker perched atop a telephone pole caught his eye. Jacob skidded to a stop and stared at it. Of course. When Robin had been trying to escape, that speaker had been blasting out WipeOut, but now he only heard carnival music. With a grin, Jacob decided it was time to stop believing in coincidences. Someone at the fair must be helping them. If he found that person, he’d be able to find the fugitives.

About the Author

DEBORAH ANN DAVIS has been writing since she was assigned to keep a Journal in her 5th grade English class. She began to look around for writing inspiration. Lo and behold, she found her world was full of funny stories just waiting to be told. As she grew older, occasionally she could manipulate one into some school assignment, but it never occurred to her to pursue writing, not even when she discovered her flare for telling stories at college parties.

After a string of college majors, she realized she could have a captive audience EVERY DAY in the public school system. As it turns out, teenagers love to laugh, and what could be more entertaining than Biology, Earth Science, and Environmental Science? Then there's the added bonus that once kids know you like to laugh, they want to make you laugh.

Go figure.

In addition to Writing, she is also an Educational Speaker and a Certified Personal Trainer. She taught for 25+ years, although somewhere in the middle of all that educating, she stepped out of teaching for 6 years to do the Mommy Thing, and run the office for their family construction company.

Even though they had followed separate paths, Deborah reunited with, and married her childhood sweetheart, twelve years after their first kiss.  Together they coached their daughter’s AAU Basketball Team, which swept States two years in a row. (Yay!) Then, for several years their daughter and their money went to college.

They currently reside on a lovely lake in Connecticut. She enjoys dabbling with living a sustainable life, writing novels for her Love of Fairs series, dancing, playing outside, and laughing really hard every day. She promotes increasing the amount of movement throughout your day via Wiggle Writer posts on Merry Meddling, her blog at www.DeborahAnnDavis.com. Follow her @DeborahAnnDavis.

Remember, you can do anything if you set your mind to it— including becoming an author at any age— but it’s way more fun if you are grinning back when the Universe smiles down on you.

teaser-1"You said something before, when we first met," I said. "What?" "You said you'd been the new guy once. What did you mean?" "I moved to Decker on my thirteenth birthday. New town, new school, new friends." He shrugged as if it wasn’t a big deal. "Oh, come on." I nudged him. "Star hockey player, you couldn't have struggled to fit in that much." Kai ran a hand through is hair. "I was in a bad place back then." Something about the bitterness in Kai's voice silenced my reply. Instead, I said, "What's a girl got to do to get a drink around here?" Kai laughed, a deep rumble vibrating from his chest. "This way, milady." He stood and offered his hand. We collected orders from the rest of the group and made our way to the kitchen. "What'll it be?" he asked from the refrigerator. "Soda is fine." "Why do I get the feeling you don't live life in the fast lane?" His head disappeared behind the door. "Are you calling me boring?" He reappeared. "I like it. I can't explain it, Daiya, but I feel like I've known you longer than a couple of weeks. Is that crazy?"

teaser-2

"I—" Kai closed the door and placed down a couple of cans of soda. His eyes burned through me as he stalked forward, and I stepped back, my back hitting the counter that ran the length of the room. "Kai, I …" My eyes shuttered, the flames building. I clutched the amethyst teardrop through my hoodie, and Kai's eyes dropped to my chest. When they met mine again, they were swirling with lust. "Daiya." I swallowed hard, my mouth dry. "What is happening between us?" My heart thumped against my chest so hard I felt a little lightheaded, but still, Kai's eyes didn't let up, and I was sure I would combust from the charged look he was giving me. He inched closer and reached out for my hair. Pinching a strand behind his fingers, Kai smiled. "All I can think about right now is kissing you." His eyes dropped to my mouth. "Iremember the way you taste." "I …" My lips parted. I wanted this. I wanted to experience Kai's mouth on mine for real. Not like it had been in the bar or how it was in my dreams. But something held me back, and I pressed my hands against his chest, inhaling a strained breath. "We should get back out there." I released a sigh, hoping he could see that I wanted this, but I just wasn’t ready to cross that line. Not until I knew what it meant. Kai's head dropped to mine, and he let out a long breath of his own. Why had I pulled away? This was what I wanted, wasn't it? But what if the prophecy was wrong? What if what Kai was experiencing was just a reaction to me? To my awakening? "Hey." His soft voice brought me back to the room. "Come on." I nodded and forced my lips into a smile. But the thoughts wouldn't leave. There were too many questions still. Too many outcomes. And one stood out above all the others: even if what Kai and I felt was real, there would come a day when he discovered who I was.
