West of the Dead Line
The Dead Line, as it came to be called, was a railroad, the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas, cutting across the middle of Indian Territory. It ran straight south from Caldwell, Kansas to Fort Reno, I.T., then on down through the Cheyenne and Comanche and Kiowa lands, crossing the Red River into Bowie, Texas. It was a line on the map, a demarcation. West of it there was no law, only outlaws. On trails out there, notes would be put up on trees and posts, sort of reverse wanted posters, letting lawmen know they’d be killed if they continued their pursuits west of the Dead Line.
Throughout the 225 years of the U.S. Marshals Service, over 200 deputies have been killed in the line of duty. Of those, more than 120 lost their lives in the Indian and Oklahoma Territories between 1850 and Oklahoma statehood in 1907.
In the storied history of the American West, no place comes close to matching the dangers and mortality these federal officers faced doing their jobs. Their courage, resolve, and dedication to duty were beyond reproach... for the most part. Those who survived became titans in the legends of the West, particularly one man called Bass Reeves. These stories are fiction, but the encounters this lawman faced, and The Dead Line, were not.
Red Lands Outlaw: the Ballad of Henry Starr
By Phil Truman
Genre: Western, Historical

"Truman’s storytelling shines throughout..." -- Kathleen Rice Adams, Western Fictioneers

“Red Lands Outlaw: The Ballad of Henry Starr is a well-conceived yarn about one of the last of Oklahoma’s horseback-riding outlaws. A good read.” -- Dusty Richards, a Spur and Wrangler Award winning author

“Author Phil Truman captured a slice of Indian Territory history and has woven it into an interesting period novel. Anyone who loves the history of the West will enjoy Red Lands Outlaw: the Ballad of Henry Starr.” -- Tammy Hinton, author and winner of the Will Rogers Medallion Award for Unbridled

In the last years of the tough and woolly land called Indian Territory, and the first of the new state of Oklahoma, the outlaw Henry Starr rides roughshod through the midst of it. A native son of “The Nations” he’s more Scotch-Irish than Cherokee, but is scorned by both. He never really wanted to journey west of the law, yet fate seems to insist. He’s falsely accused and arrested for horse-thieving at age sixteen, then sentenced to hang at nineteen by Judge Isaac Parker for the dubious killing of a deputy U.S. marshal, but he escapes the gallows on a technicality. Given that opportunity, the charming, handsome, mild-mannered Henry Starr spends the rest of his life becoming the most prolific bank robber the West has ever known.
Excerpt – Red Lands Outlaw, the ballad of Henry Starr

Bill Tilghman slowly brushed the whisker tips of his mustache over and over with his left thumb and forefinger, moving each from the middle of his upper lip outward, as he stared down at Henry. In all his law enforcement days, he’d never known so audacious, so brash, so prolific an outlaw as the man lying there in that bed.

Henry floated in and out of a morphine-induced haze while Tilghman stood there looking at him. Lewis Estes, his neck and shoulder and chest wrapped in bandages, in a bed across the room, lay there out cold.
“Henry,” Tilghman said in a firm voice. Getting no response, he called out the bank robber’s name again, this time a little louder.
Henry’s eyes fluttered open. He blinked several times, squinting to get his eyes and mind focused on the form standing beside his bed.
“Well, hello, Bill,” Henry slurred. “What the hell’re you doing here?”
Tilghman stopped stroking his mustache, and hooked both his thumbs in his vest’s watch pockets. “Come to arrest you, Henry.” He jerked his head to his right in a pointing gesture. “You and that other fella over there.”
Henry raised his head a little, and looked over at the bed where his patched up colleague lay. “I believe that there is Lewis Estes,” he said. “Guess he caught a little lead, too.”
Tilghman nodded. “Soon as you boys are able to travel, I’m taking you back to Oklahoma City to await trial. And it’s a good thing I come, too. Folks here in this town are callin’ to lynch you.”
“Why, hell, Bill, I’m crippled,” Henry responded.
“Yeah, you are that,” Tilghman said. “But Doc Hanson said he didn’t think it’d be permanent. Boy named Curry shot you in the butt. Bullet broke up your leg bone there, but the doc set it back as best he could. He thinks it’ll heal awright, but figures you’ll probably have something of a limp from here on out.”
Henry took Tilghman’s prognosis in with a solemn expression. “First time I ever been shot,” he said. “And by a damn kid to boot.”
“He’s used to shooting living things,” said Tilghman. “Butcher’s kid, I hear. Shot your partner over there, too. Some pretty fair shootin’, considerin’ what he had to shoot with.”
Henry considered all this, scrunching his eyebrows in a look of puzzlement. “I thought you’d quit marshalling, Bill. Ain’t you a politician, or something, now?”
“State senator,” Tilghman said. “But I’m also Chief of Police over in Oklahoma City. Town marshal here is an old friend of mine, so he called me. What you and your boys did was a federal crime, so you’ll have to stand trial in a federal court.”
Henry nodded. “Yeah, I reckon so,” he said.
Tilghman snorted and shook his head. “I swear, Henry. You just about beat anything I ever seen in an outlaw.”
“Why, thank ya, Bill.” A pleased smile creased Starr’s face. Coming from as renowned a lawman as Bill Tilghman, Henry considered the man’s comment a supreme compliment.
“I didn’t mean that as a tribute, Henry. I meant you’ve had several chances to straighten yourself out. When I arrested you down in New Mexico back in oh-eight, you promised me you’d never rob another bank. But in the year since you got out of Canon City Prison, there’s been a whole passel here in Oklahoma with your brand on ’em. And now you pull this double dutch.” Tilghman shook his head and laughed quietly. “I hear you were a model prisoner in Canon City. Warden even made you a trustee; sent you out as a walkin’ boss on the road gangs. But you just keep reverting back to your old ways. How many times have you been in prison? Two? Three times? This here’ll make one more.”
Henry stiffened a little. “I reckon I’ve robbed more banks than ever anyone did,” he said with pride.
“Yeah, I suppose that’s true,” Tilghman said. He pulled a chair out from the wall and sat down on it, crossing his legs. He removed his derby and wiped the sweat from the inside headband. “The question is why? You sure ain’t got nothing to show from it. And look at you now; your future prospects ain’t too bright.”
Henry stared back at Tilghman, but he didn’t have a good response. The lawman had pretty much nailed it. A reason existed as to why Henry kept on committing bank robbery after bank robbery, but he didn’t exactly know what it was, didn’t know how to express it. All he knew, he couldn’t stop doing it. He had quite a few acquaintances and relatives who drank alcohol, and the more they drank, the more they wanted. Finally, they just couldn’t do without it. Henry didn’t drink; didn’t smoke, either, but like the effect of alcohol on some of his red brothers, that’s exactly what bank robbing had done to him.

The Yankee watched Bass eat. “What’s your name, boy?” he asked.
“My momma name me Bass after her daddy. Las’ name Reeves, same as my massuh. All us belongs t’him called Reeves.”
The man nodded, still looking at Bass with his coal-black eyes. “You like bein’ a slave, Bass?” he asked.
Bass chewed another bite of jerky and put his hands out toward the fire again, thinking about his answer.
“On’t know,” he said with a shrug. “Alls I ever know. Marse Reeves, he don’t treat me bad. Give me food t’eat, place to sleep. Give me clothes. Ain’t nevuh whip me much. He mistress good to my momma and sistuh, too. They works in the house.”
“That all you ever expect to do? Ain’t you ever wanted to get free; do things you wanted to do yourself, go wherever you want to go without nobody telling you when and where?”
The Yankee waited for a response, but none came. Bass looked into the fire and chewed the jerky.
After a bit, his captor added, “Wouldn’t you like to take a piss without gettin’ another man’s permission?”
Bass looked up at him, jaw muscles moving; he turned his gaze back to the fire.
The Yankee let it go, changed the subject, shifted his weight on his butt. “’Spect there’s gonna be a fight here tomorrow. Mess of Rebs up north. Looks like old Van Dorn’s trying to get ’em around behind us. Them Texas boys of your’n look to be comin’ down the road yonder to meet us.” He gestured with the gun barrel through the dark trees. “We’ll be ready for ’em.”
“Where you from, Yank?” Bass asked.
The man stared at Reeves squarely before looking into the fire. “Kansas, mostly,” he said. “Rode with General Lane’s Jayhawkers. He didn’t much cotton to secessionists… or slave owners. Called himself an ‘abolitionist.’”
“That why you rode with him? You uh…ab-bol-lishnest?”
The Yankee threw back his head and laughed. He stood and walked out to the edge of the firelight to take his own piss, chuckling to himself as he did so.
When he came back to the fire, he sat again opposite Reeves, stirred the coals with a stick, threw on another piece of wood.
“You even know what that means, boy? Abolitionist? “
“Sho’ I does,” Bass answered, a little indignant. “It mean freein’ slaves.”
“Seems to me the only freed men is the dead ones,” his captor said. He paused to stir the fire some more, looked at Bass. “I’ve personally freed a few myself,” he said with a grin and a wink.
“Naw, I rode with Lane because he offered me the job,” he continued. “Pay wasn’t much, but it kept me out of jail. I needed that more than money at the time.
“Still, sayin’ it’s legal to own a man don’t seem right to me. Sure as hell don’t believe I’d put up with anyone claimin’ they owned me.”
Silence fell between the pair again. The haunting sound of a harmonica drifted in with the cold night air. Men’s voices echoed through the black forest; voices in calm conversation and some laughter, distant but clear like coming across a still river at night.
“”Whas yo name, then?” Bass asked. Another long pause followed before the Yankee answered.
“I got several names. Go by Haycock in this here army, William Haycock. Back in Kansas some folks called me ‘Wild Bill.’ Called me that because of the shape of my nose, made fun of how it swoops out sorta like a duck’s bill. I didn’t much like it at first, made a few callin’ me that pay. But now I believe I like it…yes sir, believe I do. You can call me Wild Bill.”
Bass nodded, and grinned back at the man. “Wild Bill,” he repeated.
“You realize I’m only telling you this ’cause you’ll be dead before sundown tomorrow.”
Bass looked cold-eyed at Haycock. “You gone kill me, Wild Bill?” he asked.
Haycock laughed again. “Naw, I ain’t gonna kill you, Bass. I’m gonna let you go. But boys see a nigger runnin’ free through these here woods, I figure one side or t’other’s bound to shoot your ass. Ain’t that what we’re fightin’ for? To set your likes free?” He cocked an eyebrow and grinned at his captive.
Bass stared back at Haycock. After a bit, he said to him, “You frees me, Wild Bill, how you know I ain’t finds myself a gun an’ free yo’ ass?”

Read A Few Excerpt...

“We need to talk. Would you like to stay for dinner?” Kate’s voice held sympathy. “It’s nothing fancy. Corned beef and vegetables.” Camp out with the enemy. Lane considered her offer then shrugged. It was magnanimous considering the way he’d treated her earlier. If the situation were reversed, he didn’t think he would have shown the same generosity. He surveyed her for an instant longer before nodding. Why not? Heck—he couldn’t even state she positively was the enemy. It wouldn’t hurt to get to know her and the child. The answers lay here, not in the tabloid stories. “Thank you. I’d like that.” His attention wandered to the boy—Jamie. His son? Or one of his brothers? Either way, Lane saw trouble ahead. If Jamie was John’s child, Sabrina would be hurt and upset, but their marriage appeared strong and would survive. On the other hand, if Jamie were Will’s, then this child’s presence would destroy his brother’s marriage. Will and Tanya were still patching things up after a trial separation. On top of that, no matter how things turned out, his mother would worry and that wasn’t good. The child was a ticking bomb. It didn’t take Lane long to weigh the consequences. He couldn’t let his brothers take the heat. Not yet. He clenched his jaw, his resolve strengthening. He would have to assume parentage until he learned the truth. All he needed to do was keep the press at bay. Jamie looked up and Lane’s heart jolted. Recognition seared through him as he met the boy’s gaze. Deep down in his gut, he sensed it. This boy was his son.

Excerpt Two...

“Do you want me to answer the door?” Kate hesitated before heaving a resigned sigh. “No, I’ll go.” When she reached the front door, she halted, took a deep breath and pasted a smile on her face. She opened the door. Her smile faded when she came face-to-face with two police officers. Alarm flared within her. The police did a wonderful job but personally, Kate could do without them arriving at her front door. They brought bad news. She gulped and took another deep, fortifying breath. “Is something wrong?” she asked. “Jamie, my son?” They both flipped identification at Kate. “Are you the owner of this property?” Kate scanned the IDs without really seeing them and slowly lifted her gaze back to their faces. What else could go wrong today? “Yes. How can I help you?” One of the police officers took a small notebook from his pocket. “What is your name please?” “Katherine Alexander. Is something wrong?” The two officers exchanged a guarded look. “Do you own any garden gnomes, Mrs. Alexander?” “It’s Miss.” “Miss Alexander, do you own garden gnomes?” he asked his question patiently. “Gnomes?” Kate stared, waiting for the punch line. “Yes, gnomes,” one officer repeated, his lips twitching in what looked like the beginnings of a grin. “No.” Kate shook her head. Personally, she thought they were ugly. An elderly woman marched around the corner of Kate’s house. Tall and lean, the woman’s dress hung on her body like clothes on a hanger. Straight up and down. A coat hanger with a temper, Kate amended when she took in the woman’s pinched lips. “No doubt about it!” The woman’s voice sounded as sharp as her angles. “They’re mine! The person on the telephone told me they were my gnomes, that she’d stolen them.” She folded her arms across her scrawny chest and gave a defiant nod. “I want them back. Gnome-napper!”

Excerpt Three...

A few steps into the room, Kate hesitated then shrugged and stepped boldly forward. Lane’s bedroom appeared tidy but had a lived-in feel and more individuality than any of the other rooms. The lingering fragrance of his cologne and a touch of lemon furniture polish scented the air. Kate’s breath quickened with sudden sensual awareness. A king-size bed dominated the room but she looked away hurriedly when unwanted images, steamy images of entwined bodies flashed through her fertile imagination. Her pulse spiked and her skin felt hot all over. Horrified, she shook the vision away, impatient with her graphic thoughts of sex and lovemaking. Kate fixed her attention on the display of photos covering a nearby portion of the bedroom wall. Gradually, her pulse slowed as she perused the faces in the portraits. Safer. Much safer. The only trouble was that the faces in the photographs bore wide grins as though they’d witnessed her discomfort. When color filled her cheeks, Kate searched for something else to take her mind off Lane. She spied an en suite and pushed the connecting door open. The large spa bath—big enough for two—caused an action replay. Masculine and feminine limbs entwined. Hot passion and slow, drugging kisses while the couple made love. Kate’s right hand shot to the cold water tap. A burst of frigid water would force her confused emotions to order. The scuff of a foot on carpet jerked her head up. There it was again. Kate jumped about to stare in the direction of the noise, her heart pushing and clawing its way up her throat. The door squeaked as a hand pushed it open. Someone was entering the bedroom. Gasping, Kate searched frantically for a place to hide. Behind the door—it was the only possible place. She leapt into hiding, her heart hammering loudly enough to play in a rock and roll band. But not quite fast enough.

Read an excerpt:

In walked the man of her dreams.
Samantha stared, transfixed, as the vision stepped directly from the pages of her latest gothic romance into the noisy, smoke-filled tavern.
He had arrived... her long-awaited hero.
It mattered not that he was a total stranger to her... nor that he patronized so seedy an establishment as this... nor that he pointedly displayed an ominous-looking knife handle from the top of one muddied Hessian boot. All that mattered was his towering height, his thick black hair, his uncompromising jaw, his piercing gray eyes. And that dimple... it was just where she'd always known it would be; in his left cheek. It flashed briefly as he nodded a greeting to someone, then vanished into the taut lines of his face.
Yes, it was irrefutably he... the hero of all her fantasies.
Breathless and eager, Samantha watched as he carelessly swung off his great coat, shaking rivulets of rain from it with swift, purposeful strokes. Simultaneously, he surveyed the room, his cool gaze taking in the shoddy furnishings and seedy occupants in one enveloping glance.
He moved forward, commanding and sure, coming closer to where Sammy sat... close enough so she could see the drops of water glistening in his raven-black hair, causing the ends to curl a bit at the nape. He seemed to be looking for someone.
Instead, he found her.
Dark brows raised, not with instantaneous, adoring surrender, but with decided, disapproving surprise.
Without hesitating, Sammy flashed him a smile, drinking in his splendid, chiseled features and exciting, leashed power. He was just as she had imagined him... no, better.
Her heart tightened in her chest as he approached her.
"What despicable cad deserted you here, little one?"
"Pardon me?" Sammy blinked in confusion.
With apparent disgust, her hero scanned the room. "You needn't feel ashamed. Just tell me what unscrupulous blackguard accompanied you to such a place, then abandoned you."
"Oh, nothing like that, sir." Sammy assured him brightly. "Actually, it was I who spotted this establishment from my carriage window and chose to stop here. Given the circumstances, it seemed the best place..."
"The best place... to what?" He looked censuring now, his gray eyes chilling, stormier than the skies that heralded tonight's downpour. "Is this your idea of an evening adventure? If so, you've either lost your way or your mind! Tell me, have you looked about you? I seriously doubt that you have, else you would have bolted. And, thankfully, it seems that these low-lifes have yet to spot you as prey. Had they done so, I assure you that your elegant gown would have long since been tossed up over your foolish, beautiful head!"
Sammy sucked in her breath. This wasn't at all the way she'd envisioned their first meeting. Following her hero's icy, pointed gaze, she surveyed the dimly lit tavern, trying to see what was upsetting him so. True, the tables were a bit shabby, even broken in spots, and the pungent smell of gin... mixed with some other, unrecognizable foul odor... permeated the room. And, she had to admit, the occupants of the tavern did need to shave... as well as to bathe. Still, they'd shown no signs of harming or even approaching her; so why was her hero hinting at violence?
"I don't know what you mean, sir," she confessed, bewildered. "Despite their rather coarse attire and unpolished manners, the gentlemen here have made no improper advances toward me. They are merely enjoying their spirits and each other's company."
The stranger gaped in utter disbelief.
"Gentlemen?" he managed. Leaning forward, he lowered his voice to a muffled hiss. "Sheltered innocent, what you see are pickpockets, highwaymen and drunks... and an occasional murderer or two." He straightened, emphatic and fierce. "This is Boydry's... as unsavory a pub as they come... not the bloody Clarendon Hotel!"
"Really?" Samantha was finding it very difficult to share the intensity of his tirade. She was too busy drowning in the hypnotic spell of his towering presence. And, after all, he was only trying to protect her... the foremost duty of a true hero.
"If such is the case, then why are you here?" she asked, half-tempted to stroke the hard, uncompromising line of his jaw. "You don't appear unsavory to me."
His dimple flickered in response. "Don't I? That is only because you don't know me."
"No... but I'd like to."
He blinked. "You'd like to..."
"Oh yes. Don't you see?" Sammy leaned forward, making an animated sweep with her hands. "It's as if Mrs. Radcliffe had penned it; a young woman alone... darkness... danger." A pause. "Of course I would have preferred a castle turret to a tavern..." she gave a philosophical shrug, "... nevertheless, you've arrived... and you're exactly as I pictured you."
"You have lost your mind," he muttered.

travesty-teaser-1

ABRAM--Feeling sorry for myself wasn’t a foreign feeling. In fact, I’d spent the better part of the first year with Jim and Pat, wishing I was dead. But I’d had a moment of realization one night as I laid on my back, staring at the water-stained ceiling. I wouldn’t be fourteen forever. One day, I’d be a grown man. One who could live where he wanted; work where he wanted. Once I had my mind set right, I stayed focused. Every now and then, I’d slip, but mind over matter had become my mantra.
SOPHIA--I turned around to run as fast as I could, when something hit me so hard in the head, it felt like it cracked my skull. My ears rang and a blood-curdling scream stuck in my throat. My lungs stung with the air trapped inside of them. I clenched my teeth at the sharp, intense pain shooting down my neck from the right side of my brain.
As dizziness took over, my body crumpled to the floor and my sight left me. The last thing I remembered was the slow trickle of warm liquid running down my temple and seeping into my ear. It muffled my hearing just before everything faded to black.

ABRAM--Her small body was the perfect size, and folded into me with ease. It felt so warm and safe having someone to hang on to. I had never felt like this before. Granted, I’d never been in a situation like this before, but there was something different about her. I felt like I could actually trust her, and that was huge. Add in the fact she considered me her hero, and I was done for. I wasn’t dumb though. I knew I was all she had, but it still affected me. It made me wish for something more between us, more for myself, and that was unsettling. Wishing for more wasn’t something I was familiar with. My world up until this point had been based on survival, not planning a future with a white picket fence.

@AuthorKMDoherty @SagesBlogTours Thomas Holland in the Realm of the Ogres By K. M. Doherty Book Spotlight!

Thomas Holland in the Realm of the Ogres
By K. M. Doherty
Genre: Middle Grade Magical Fantasy

Tom and his friends restored the barrier – but that was a temporary fix.  Now they must find a permanent solution, the artifact, to protect Elfhaven for a thousand years and bring Tom and his mom safely back home to Earth.
To find the artifact they are forced to embark on a dangerous quest through the deadly Demon Forest, cross the raging Icebain River, and solve the riddle of the Cave of Nightmares.
On their desperate journey they must climb an active volcano past scalding geysers and deadly giant ice-worms.
Standing in their way are a bungling troll and ogre, a shape-shifting demon, and a demented fairy queen.  With gremlins and wizards in hot pursuit only Tom’s scientific knowledge and the use of light and dark magic can save them.
Did I mention dragons?

No matter what Bellchar the troll says, K. M. Doherty is the real author of the Thomas Holland series.
KM is a software engineer who has raced sailboats, skied, flew hang gliders, studied martial arts, rode motorcycles, been a professional musician, and acted in theater. He loves to write, hike, do Tai Chi, attend plays, and he watches way too many movies. KM is a professional public speaker giving presentations at schools, businesses and civic organizations across the country.
The author also donates books to children in need.
KM’s love of science and technology began in his childhood and continues to this day. He believes that for writing fantasy and magic anything goes, however, for science fiction, the physics must be correct or follow current scientific theories.
Finally, and most important, please remember K. M. Doherty is the true author. Don’t listen to Bellchar. As Avani, Goban, and Devraj say in this book: HE’S A TROLL!
