Synopsis:

The Echo Man by Richard Montanari
It is fall in Philadelphia and the mutilated body of a man has been found in one of the poorest neighborhoods of the city. The victim's forehead and eyes are wrapped in a band of white paper, sealed on one side with red sealing wax. On the other side is a smear of blood in the shape of a figure eight. The victim has been roughly and violently shaved clean — head to toe — a temporary tattoo on his finger.
As another brutalized body appears, then another, it becomes horrifyingly clear that someone is re-creating unsolved murders from Philadelphia's past in the most sinister of ways.
And, for homicide detectives Kevin Byrne and Jessica Balzano, the killer is closer than they think...

Praise:

"This tale had me gripped by the throat, unwilling to do anything but anxiously turn the pages. Richard Montanari's writing is both terrifying and lyrical, a killer combination that makes him a true stand-out in the crowded thriller market. The Echo Man showcases a master storyteller at his very best." -Tess Gerritsen, bestselling author of The Silent Girl
"Richard Montanari's The Echo Man continues his work as a writer whose prose can capture quite extraordinary subtleties. When a man's facial expression is described as "not the look of someone with nothing to hide, but rather of one who has very carefully hidden everything," we know we are in good hands, and with The Echo Man, we are in the hands of one of the best in the business". – Thomas H. Cook, bestselling author of Red Leaves

Read an excerpt:

For every light there is shadow. For every sound, silence. From the moment he got the call Detective Kevin Francis Byrne had a premonition this night would forever change his life, that he was headed to a place marked by a profound evil, leaving only darkness in its wake.
“You ready?”
Byrne glanced at Jimmy. Detective Jimmy Purify sat in the passenger seat of the bashed and battered department- issue Ford. He was just a few years older than Byrne, but something in the man’s eyes held deep wisdom, a hard- won experience that transcended time spent on the job and spoke instead of time earned. They’d known each other a long time, but this was their first full tour as partners.
“I’m ready,” Byrne said.
He wasn’t.
They got out of the car and walked to the front entrance of the sprawling, well- tended Chestnut Hill mansion. Here, in this exclusive section of the northwest part of the city, there was history at every turn, a neighborhood designed at a time when Philadelphia was second only to London as the largest English- speaking city in the world. The first officer on the scene, a rookie named Timothy Meehan, stood inside the foyer, cloistered by coats and hats and scarves perfumed with age, just beyond the reach of the cold autumn wind cutting across the grounds.
Byrne had been in Officer Meehan’s shoes a handful of years earlier and remembered well how he’d felt when detectives arrived, the tangle of envy and relief and admiration. Chances were slight that Meehan would one day do the job Byrne was about to do. It took a certain breed to stay in the trenches, especially in a city like Philly, and most uniformed cops, at least the smart ones, moved on.
Byrne signed the crime- scene log and stepped into the warmth of the atrium, taking in the sights, the sounds, the smells. He would never again enter this scene for the first time, never again breathe an air so red with violence. Looking into the kitchen, he saw a blood splattered killing room, scarlet murals on pebbled white tile, the torn flesh of the victim jigsawed on the floor.
While Jimmy called for the medical examiner and crime- scene unit, Byrne walked to the end of the entrance hall. The officer standing there was a veteran patrolman, a man of fifty, a man content to live without ambition. At that moment Byrne envied him. The cop nodded toward the room on the other side of the corridor.
And that was when Kevin Byrne heard the music.
She sat in a chair on the opposite side of the room. The walls were covered with a forest- green silk; the floor with an exquisite burgundy Persian. The furniture was sturdy, in the Queen Anne style. The air smelled of jasmine and leather.
Byrne knew the room had been cleared, but he scanned every inch of it anyway. In one corner stood an antique curio case with beveled glass doors, its shelves arrayed with small porcelain figurines. In another corner leaned a beautiful cello. Candlelight shimmered on its golden surface.
The woman was slender and elegant, in her late twenties. She had burnished russet hair down to her shoulders, eyes the color of soft copper. She wore a long black gown, sling- back heels, pearls. Her makeup was a bit garish— theatrical, some might say— but it flattered her delicate features, her lucent skin.
When Byrne stepped fully into the room the woman looked his way, as if she had been expecting him, as if he might be a guest for Thanksgiving dinner, some discomfited cousin just in from Allentown or Ashtabula. But he was neither. He was there to arrest her.
“Can you hear it?” the woman asked. Her voice was almost adolescent in its pitch and resonance.
Byrne glanced at the crystal CD case resting on a small wooden easel atop the expensive stereo component. Chopin: Nocturne in G Major. Then he looked more closely at the cello. There was fresh blood on the strings and fingerboard, as well as on the bow lying on the floor. Afterward, she had played.
The woman closed her eyes. “Listen,” she said. “The blue notes.”
Byrne listened. He has never forgotten the melody, the way it both lifted and shattered his heart.
Moments later the music stopped. Byrne waited for the last note to feather into silence. “I’m going to need you to stand up now, ma’am,” he said.
When the woman opened her eyes Byrne felt something flicker in his chest. In his time on the streets of Philadelphia he had met all types of people, from soulless drug dealers, to oily con men, to smash-and-grab artists, to hopped-up joyriding kids. But never before had he encountered anyone so detached from the crime they had just committed. In her light- brown eyes Byrne saw demons caper from shadow to shadow.
The woman rose, turned to the side, put her hands behind her back. Byrne took out his handcuffs, slipped them over her slender white wrists, and clicked them shut.
She turned to face him. They stood in silence now, just a few inches apart, strangers not only to each other, but to this grim pageant and all that was to come.
“I’m scared,” she said.
Byrne wanted to tell her that he understood. He wanted to say that we all have moments of rage, moments when the walls of sanity tremble and crack. He wanted to tell her that she would pay for her crime, probably for the rest of her life— perhaps even with her life— but that while she was in his care she would be treated with dignity and respect.
He did not say these things. “My name is Detective Kevin Byrne,” he said. “It’s going to be all right.” It was November 1, 1990. Nothing has been right since.

CROSSING HEARTS
Cross Creek series, book 1
by Kimberly Kincaid

A Cowboy for Mary Cover Reveal!

From author, Lizabeth Scott comes the long waited for third and final book in the romantic comedy series, Hearts of Gold.

Rose married the man of her dreams, Sheik Rashid, after a rocky start.
Annie found her soulmate in the brilliantly talented music star, Carter Ryan.
Finally, it’s Mary’s turn.
Mary was known as the determined and single-minded sister who always had her sights set on a career in New York City. That’s how her family knew her. That’s what they expected. Funny thing about expectations…

Never in her life had Mary Gold met such a perplexing and utterly mouthwatering man.
Stranded in the blazing hot sun of Able, Texas, the swoon worthy cowboy rode up on his golden steed and rescued her from becoming a puddle on the deserted road. The man of her dreams then turned into an insulting jerk at any and every opportunity! If her very existence irritated him, why did he keep coming around? And why did her day seem a little brighter when he did?

Ethan knew her type all too well–high maintenance and with an agenda that would end up costing him dearly. Been there, done that, and had the scars of betrayal to prove it.
His little daffodil represented everything he detested yet he found her gorgeous and adorable and she smelled as good as all those silly flower names he called her. He should have dropped her off in town and never looked back, but he couldn’t seem to stay away.

No matter how hard he tried, avoiding her wasn't working. There was only one thing to do; send her back where she came from, and take temptation far, far away!

The fly in the ointment ... appearances can be deceiving.

“Ethan?”
Ethan cringed when he heard the small and delicate voice. “What?”
“Would you please bring me my carryon?”
Slowly through gritted teeth he asked, “what do you want out of it?”
“Just some stuff, if you wouldn’t mind, could you bring it in here?”
Ethan rolled his eyes, what was he now, a lady’s maid? “Ms. Gold, what do you want out of it?” Yeah, he could have taken the entire suitcase into the bathroom but then he wouldn’t have had the entertainment of messing with her.
She called out impatiently, “Mary. My name is Mary.”
He could almost see her stamping her foot in irritation. “You’re kidding, right?” He laughed. “Who names their kid, Mary Gold?”
“Archibald and Jessamine Gold, my mother and father gave me that name!”
Ethan laughed, it figured. “Your family has serious naming issues. I bet you were ripe for the pickings in school.”
“Mr….”
“Montgomery,” he supplied calmly, keeping the amusement from his voice.
“Mr. Montgomery, would you please bring my pajamas and the small zippered cosmetic bag from my carryon?”
Ethan unzipped her case and found several sets of what could be considered pajamas, and smiled wickedly, “Hey Flower,” he yelled through the bathroom door to. “Do you want the blue ones with the kitties or the pink ones with the hearts?” He asked in all seriousness before breaking out in a sly grin.
There was a pause before she answered and Ethan just knew she probably counted to ten.
“Mary. My name is Mary and the pink will be fine,” she answered primly.
He couldn’t help it, he had to, “Do you need any panties? I think the purple flowered ones would go well with the hearts. Of course, the white thongs could go with either.”
She screeched and yelled back, “are you touching my underwear?”
“How else do you expect me to bring it to you?” He waited for her comeback when she said nothing he picked up the zippered bag and of course, unzipped it. Poked around with his finger and found absolutely nothing of interest, just women’s cosmetic, a razor, deodorant, a small bottle of aspirin, toothbrush and toothpaste, dental floss and…yikes! He yanked his hand back and dropped the bag spilling the feminine products and everything else on the bed. He wiped his suddenly sweaty hands on his denims before stuffing the spilled items back into the bag and re-zipping it.
“What’s taking you so long?” She called.
He gathered her things and found her sitting on the edge of the tub instead of where he’d placed her. “Doc Henry left some salve for me to put on you when you’re finished.” He quickly put her things down and turned to leave the room.
“Wait.”
Ethan turned back, he’d been so close. Her next words almost sent him over the edge.
“Would you unzip my skirt and unbutton my shirt.”
Ethan looked to the heavens. Had this woman been sent to be a thorn in his side? How could he undress her and not devour her? No. Think Solange. His hand shook as he reached for the small zipper at the back of her skirt and eased it down between perfectly formed globes. His hands shook with need to touch, caress, lick… No! Think Solange! Sweat beads formed on his forehead as he fought to keep his hands from reaching to take a perfectly rounded cheek in each hand. With her zipper lowered, he turned his attention to the six small buttons on the front of her shirt. The entire time he pushed the small buttons through the holes he made himself remember the last time he’d seen his cheating ex-girlfriend, Solange. She’d been buttoning her shirt when he’d kicked her out. With his mission completed, he raised his hands in victory just like at a calf roping competition before he turned to leave the room.
“Wait.” She took a deep breath before whispering, “my bra.”
Ethan closed his eyes and turned back to her and without thinking about it unsnapped her bra with one hand, a feat he had perfected by the age of fifteen. He turned and escaped before she could come up with any additional tortures for him. He didn’t care if she needed help taking the garments off, he could not help her.

He meets another boy called raccoon, a robber by trade. He helps Jones recoup some the money he believes the authorities have has been stolen from him.

Jones has an on-going romance with a boy called Juan. His pregnant girlfriend sees Jones as a threat, and starts a battle between them.

After the fight, Raccoon invites Jones meet a lady called Violet, who lives locked up in the attic. Suspicious of her, he declines Raccoons invitation to stay, and returns back down to the Shades.

He discovers that Juan has another boy lover who goes further than he did, and is left feeling alone and rejected. But, as if that wasn’t bad enough, her learns he is out of money and must now start earning his keep down “Dead Man’s Alley” doing ‘dirty work’.

After a dangerous encounter, and unhappy with his bedfellow, Jones decides to take up Raccoons offer and moves up into the attic with him and Violet. Violet, however, turns out to be equally dangerous and Jones sets out to find Joe.

On finding Joe, he realizes he has nothing to say to him, but he and Raccoon seem to have an idea about being partners. That dream is quickly squashed when Raccoon explains to Jones he intends nothing romantic.

On returning back to the attic, the two boys find Violet has had some kind of breakdown. It seems she has been told her navy lover is dead.  Unsure of what to do they call for help. They learn that Violet has returned to her other self:  Saul Suarez’ ‘other’ brother

Violet is now riding with Suarez gang and Jones and Raccoon are left together to try and get along. One day they hear that Violet has hooked up with some navy scoundrel, turned into Saul’s’ enemy, and never will return.

One day Jones receives a warning about a certain good-looking Navy in the area.
Despite the caution, Jones is charmed by one he calls Sweet Virginia. It isn’t long before he is awakened to sexual pleasure.

With dreams of a happy life together on a ranch selling horses, Jones wanders further away from the relative security of Raccoon and the Shades and deeper into the wilderness with sweet Virginia.

Jones agrees to sell contraband tobacco for Sweet Virginia.

When Jones loses the money, Sweet Virginia abandons him.

Raccoon falls dangerously ill and is taken to live with his relatives on a Native American Rancheria. Jones is now left alone at The Shades, without his friend or his lover’s affections.

One day, Jones learns that Sweet Virginia is partnered up with a crazed criminal who has turned on the Suarez Brothers and is stealing from them.
