Gloria Palmer has always done the proper thing expected of her as the daughter of a shipping tycoon. The approval of her family and friends mean everything. And yet, when the perfect suitor offers for her… she hesitates.
Colin McDougal has little use for those living on the fancy side of the trolley tracks. He is too busy managing the family pub and, in his spare time, writing down the lively tunes in his head. So, when Miss Palmer asks for his help to prepare for a music audition, he is flummoxed. What does he know of highbrow music?
But with each practice session, their feelings for each other grow. When it comes time for Gloria to make a choice between what is proper and what she desires, will she realize that if music can cross class lines, it might also be able to harmonize two hearts.

He blew out a long breath. “What’s in it for me?”

She frowned. She wasn’t used to being addressed in such a way or, for that matter, talking about money. It was…inappropriate for a woman of her station to concern herself with such things. “You’ll be well paid for your time. Just like yesterday.”

His gaze never left hers. “Fair enough. What changed between yesterday and today?”

“Nothing changed but my mind.”

“There’s more to it than that. If I’m going to do this, you have to be honest with me.”

She closed her eyes and inhaled through her nose, drawing on her own strength. When she opened them, she focused on her gloved hands. “My father reminded me—quite vehemently—that a Palmer doesn’t give up. Ever. He also reminded me that I have five weeks and I had better use every one of them.”
“So, it is about his pride? Family pride?”

She hated to think of it like that, however by all appearances, it looked to be the case. She nodded. “I believe so.”

He sat back. “All right then. I know something about that.”

She breathed a little easier. Had they reached common ground?
“What happens if you don’t win? What then?”

The animosity in his eyes had lessened, replaced by something else…curiosity? “Then I will accept George Welbourne’s offer of marriage. We are practically engaged now as it is. I only need to satisfy my father’s wishes to wait until after the audition to give him my answer.”

He didn’t reply for the longest time, and then suddenly he drummed his fingers on the marred tabletop. “How many hours are we talking about?”

Hope started to buzz in her chest. Up until that moment, she had expected him to decline her offer, but he was actually considering it! “As many as you can afford.”

 Excerpt:
Bridget leaned toward me and nodded in that direction. “He’s been sitting by himself for a while. A dance with that fine man could take your mind off just about anything.”

Ophelia winked. “You should give him a try.”

“You think?” We laughed until we about peed our pants. I noticed he was watching us with a grin that spread across his sexy face. “Oh shit. I think he heard us.”

“Good. You deserve a little fun after the week you’ve had,” Bridget insisted.

“Well, I’ve seen my share of gorgeous men, but that guy is smok’n hot.” I looked heavenward and giggled.

“Oh boy, is he ever,” Bridget and Ophelia said in unison and fanned their faces.

“I’m going to give him my, ‘you can buy me a drink’ look and see what he does.”

All of a sudden Bridget rolled her eyes toward the bar. “Holy moly, he’s coming this way. That worked fast. I should try that maneuver,” Bridget whispered.

“Me too.” Ophelia got out a pen and small notepad from her purse and wrote down what I had done and then tucked her notes into her purse.

Bridget and I stared at her. Her face turned crimson.

“We always come up with great ideas over margaritas, but I can never remember what they are in the morning. From now on, I’m writing them down. Hopefully they’ll make sense in the morning.”

Sharon Kleve was born and raised in Washington and currently lives on the Olympic Peninsula with her husband.

Sharon is a multi-published author of contemporary romance. She loves romance. She loves reading romance, living romance, and especially loves writing about romance. She gets no greater feeling than watching her characters come alive in each other's arms. Most of all, she loves giving her characters the happily ever after they deserve—with a few bumps and bruises along the way.

One of her favorite things to do is pick up a new book and sink into the story, immersing herself in the emotions between the characters. She hopes to inspire her readers the same way her favorite authors have inspired her.

When not writing, she can usually be found either curled up in her recliner with her cat and a good book, or in the kitchen baking sourdough bread or bagels.

I f*cking hate hospitals.
My boots squeak on the linoleum floors as I stare down the hallway and make my way to her room, doing my best to push back the deluge of memories frantically trying to take over my mind. After that night, I swore I would never be back here but for her, I would do just about anything. Everything about this place haunts me from the sound of monitors beeping and loved ones crying to the smell of antiseptic. Each little thing like a demon hiding in the shadows, laying in wait to reach out and pull me back into that night and everything I lost.
The memories start to overwhelm me and I have to stop, leaning back against the wall and closing my eyes as I try to pull air into my body. Flashes of images like a horror movie roll through my brain and I lean over, squeezing my eyes shut tighter like that might make them stop as I fist my hands on my knees.
*****************************************************************************
“Where am I going to find that first aid kit?”
I point to the cupboard directly behind him. “Second shelf.”
He grabs it and turns back to me, setting the kit on the counter next to me on one side before looking over at the sink on the other side. Without a word, he kneels in front of me and slips my shoe off my foot. I can’t look away, curious and turned on as I wonder what the hell he’s doing. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a knife, flipping it open with ease and I suck in breath. If I were smart, I would be terrified right now. I would start screaming for help or kick my foot out and hope it catches him in the face so I can get away but he’s rendered me completely f*cking stupid.
No, instead I sit my ass on the counter and watch as he pulls my tights away from my leg and cuts them open all the way up, my skin sparking with the intense desire blanketing us. When he gets above my knee where the tights disappear under my skirt, I put my hand out to stop him and he pulls the knife away
“They’re thigh highs,” I mutter as I pull my skirt up slightly and pull the stocking off. I dangle it out in front of him but his gaze is glued to my bare leg. His tongue darts out, wetting his lips and my eyes almost roll back in my head. Jesus, I think I could cum just from watching him watch me. I clear my throat and he looks up at me.
“Care to tell me why you murdered my tights?”
*************************************************************************************************
“What are you doing?”
“Well, we said later,” he explains, shrugging like it should be obvious.
I nod. “Yes, we did.”
His eyes dance with humor and something more and as he looks down at me, the temperature in the room cranks up a few degrees. “And as far as I can tell, it’s technically later.”
“Technically.”
He takes another step towards me but this time I don’t move so we’re only a whisper away from touching. My breathing quickens as I meet his eyes and my lips part. “That still doesn’t answer my question.”
“About what I’m doing here?” he asks, his voice lower and huskier than just moments before.
I lick my lips and nod. “Yes.”
His gaze darts to my mouth, so intense that I can feel it rocking through my body. He looks at me like he wants to devour me and I have absolutely no objections to that. Everything about him seems intense from the heartache in his gray gaze to the “don’t mess with me” aura around him and I can’t help but imagine how incredibly good it would feel if he focused that intensity on my body. Just the mental image is enough to force a shiver down my spine.
“I really want to kiss you,” he whispers, moving a fraction of an inch closer like he can’t stop himself.
             “I’m okay with that.”

Soon a second body is found—an illegal Peruvian refugee woman linked to a charismatic tent revival preacher. But as Katrina tries to investigate the enigmatic evangelist, she is blocked by antagonistic FBI agents and Army CID personnel. When more young female refu-gees disappear, she must partner with deputy Billy Blevins, who stirs mixed feelings in her, to connect the lake murder to the refugees. Katrina is no stranger to darkness, but cold-blooded conspirators plan to make sure she'll never again see the light of day . . .
