Snap to Grid

By DK Reed
Genre: YA, Sci-Fi, Fantasy

Sixteen-year-old Red identifies with legendary warrioress, Red Sonja, as a coping mechanism for the difficulties of teen life with ADHD.  But even her inner warrioress is a little nervous about moving into Uncle Alistair’s old mansion after seeing an eerily beautiful “Viking ghost” in an upstairs window shortly after his disappearance.  And, she soon notices a crow acting strangely and feels like she is being watched.

Uncle Alistair’s graduate student, Erik, trapped in a ghost-like state by means of one of the stones, can only watch her.  Unable to be seen or heard, he’s now more like an essence or spirit.  Though Red has never been popular, her heroic goodness lends to the beauty of her essence and Erik is quickly smitten.  He uses the limited tools available to try and reach her, including his crow friend, Moon.  But, will he get to her before the cult?  Can she solve the mystery and save him?

About the Author

Reed grew up on a farm in the misty Clinch River valley of the Smoky Mountains. She now lives in Maryland with her husband, two daughters (when they aren’t away at college), two dogs and two cats and loves to hike near the Potomac River.
Reed loves the natural world both as a hiker and scientist and this figures heavily in her books.  She loves exploring the “what ifs” of science and tries to make the science fiction in her novels plausible and logical.  She has a doctorate in biology and has taught students from middle school to college.  She is an award-winning technical writer/editor and has co-authored/edited dozens of ecological risk assessments and other scientific books and articles.  While she views her work as an applied scientist as problem-solving fun, what she really loves is to explore imaginary worlds and share her intriguing stories.
A few years ago, a serious illness caused her to look at her life afresh.  She decided to focus her time and attention more on spiritual growth and joyful living.  This led her to return to an earlier love, fiction writing—having fun with science. She spent the next few years honing her fiction writing skills and transitioning into her new career as a sci-fi-fantasy/supernatural romance writer.
"Life is better if you do what you love and share your joy with others.”

Character Interview
What is the name of the book where we'll find you? Can you tell us a little about it?

I’m excited to have you come along on my adventures with the Stones of Bothynus! You’ll meet me in Book One: Snap to Grid.

Ok, so here’s the thing—my family gets drawn into some really creepy stuff when Uncle Alistair disappears. He’s my coolest relative, always reminded me of Merlin or Gandalf.  Not that he wears a robe or anything, but he’s a professor of Medieval Religions and, since I was a kid, has always had some intriguing artifact or sacred object to show Annie and me; that’s my little sister, she’s 15 now.  Just before this particular adventure began, he’d been researching some ancient stone artifacts and, though I had no idea at the time, these stones were capable of changing one’s sub-atomic particles so that they snapped to different size-scale grids and changed one’s state of existence. I don’t want to give too much away, but let me just say that the altered states of existence are a lot like what you would think of when you think of a ghost or angel—like an ethereal being.

And that brings me to how my adventure began in Snap to Grid. Just after Uncle Alistair disappeared, Annie and I were walking up from the river behind his old mansion and I saw something that I couldn’t explain, something I couldn’t get out of my mind.  Ok, I know this sounds bizarre, but I saw a Viking ghost in the upstairs window, an eerily captivating creature staring at me—I was dumfounded! But, I couldn’t get Annie to believe me, so I didn’t even bother telling anyone else. But, that didn’t keep me from investigating…

Tell us a little about yourself. Where do you fit into the story? What should we know about you?

I’m 16 years old now (15 when the book opens) and have always had a vivid imagination.  In fact, don’t laugh, but I imagine myself as a hero like legendary warrioress, Red Sonja, you know the Marvel Comics character? I don’t think my dad had any idea of how insightful he was being when he nicknamed me Red when I started taking tae kwon do lessens. But, to be honest, it’s my way of coping with ADHD. I’ve always been impulsive and a little hyperactive and I know that this has cost me some potential friends and that I will never be the most popular kid. But, rather than whine about it, I decided early on to overcome it by being strong and taking charge of my own life.

What do you think of the author? Be honest. We won't tell.

I'm good with the way she portrayed me and she was spot on about my little sister. But I don't know--I guess I'd have to say that I’m a little annoyed with some of the creepy stuff she allowed to happen.

How do you feel about the story you're in?

It was the most fascinating adventure and way cooler than anything I had ever imagined. It started out as kind of sad and scary when Uncle Alistair disappeared, and then got really creepy when crows began doing odd things and Roy showed up everywhere. But, once I started putting two and two together it felt good. And then I got to be transformed by the stones, and wow! Let’s just say that when your molecules make you like an ethereal being, you can press through walls and flight is a real thing—you get the picture.

Do you like being a character in the book?

Again, I can’t say I liked it one bit at first. Hey, there are things out there that we don’t usually see that are not for the faint of heart. But, there are also beautiful things out there. I will just say that when doors are opened, both good and evil can come through, and I’d rather be in the battle than on the sidelines.

How do you see your future? Without giving anything away about the story, naturally.

I see myself continuing to fight for good. As you will soon find, not every being has good motives. Since the stones can produce altered states that make contact with ethereal beings a possibility, this can also lead to problems. The war between good and evil has become a real part of my world. But, not to give too much away, I’ll just say that along with new problems, also come new opportunities to forge meaningful alliances.

What do you know about your author's plans? Can we expect to see you in any future stories?

Absolutely, you will see me in future stories.  This is book one of a trilogy. In the next book, my little sister, Annie, gets in over her head when she “borrows” a device that our uncle brilliantly crafted from artifact dust and uses it to shrink herself to explore a hidden cave behind a waterfall on our grandmother’s farm.  You may recall that I said that the altered states of being make it possible to see ethereal beings?  Well, Annie sees something in the cave and a new adventure begins…

Let's say they make a movie about this book. Who do you want to play you, and why?

Definitely a strong female lead, like Kristen Stewart or Gemma Arterton would be the type. But, I’d like to see someone come from obscurity and burst onto the scene in this—a debut actress. Like me, someone with a quiet strength. She would need to be agile and able to do tae kwon do. It really would make a great movie!

Thankfully, her hometown stint is temporary. Better yet, she has a plan guaranteed to get her out ASAP:
  • Return her aging-but-still-crazy grandmother back to health;
  • Help her cousin with her boutique;
  • Evade Brady Taylor, her high school sweetheart, a.k.a the reason she fled Louisiana in the first place.
Brady isn't even a footnote ... until one unexpected run-in with him changes everything. She shouldn't be tempted by his drawl, she shouldn't be tempted by the promise of his kiss, she shouldn't want him. But she does. Oh, boy, this was so not the plan. - - Twelve years, one city, and too many issued traffic tickets later, Homicide Detective Brady Taylor is all geared up for being promoted to sergeant within the New Orleans Police Department. Or, he would be -- if he wasn't sitting in third place. Thankfully, he's cut out every possible distraction:
  • Hanging out with his buddies;
  • Women;
  • And, God help him, football.
His life should be distraction-free . . . but then Shaelyn Lawrence waltzes back into it, with her sexy red lips, curvy body, and her f***-me heels. Brady should run in the opposite direction. He definitely shouldn't spend time pursuing her, kissing her, or landing her in his bed. But he does. Shaelyn may have left once, but Brady is determined to prove that Shaelyn belongs in New Orleans. She belongs with him.

In Mundy’s Landing, bygone bloodshed has become a big business. During the rigorous winter of 1666, all but five colonists in the small Hudson Valley settlement died of starvation. Accused of unimaginable crimes, James and Elizabeth Mundy and their three children survived, but the couple were later accused of murder and executed. Left to fend for themselves in a hostile community, their offspring lived out exemplary lives in a town that would bear the family name. They never reveal the secret that died with their parents on the gallows… or did they?
“We Shall Never Tell.” Spurred by the cryptic phrase in a centuries-old letter, Emerson Mundy has flown cross-country to her ancestral hometown in hopes of tracing her ancestral past—and perhaps building a future. In Mundy’s Landing, she discovers long lost relatives, a welcoming ancestral home… and a closet full of skeletons.
A year has passed since former NYPD Detective Sullivan Leary solved the historic Sleeping Beauty Murders, apprehended a copycat killer, and made a fresh start in the Hudson Valley. Banking on an uneventful future in a village that’s seen more than its share of bloodshed, Sully is in for an unpleasant surprise when a historic skull reveals a notorious truth. Now she’s on the trail of a murky predator determined to destroy the Mundy family tree, branch by branch.

Chapter 1

July 20, 2016
Los Angeles, CA

We shall never tell.
Strange, the thoughts that go through your head when you’re standing at an open grave.
Not that Emerson Mundy knew anything about open graves before today. Her father’s funeral is the first she’s ever attended, and she’s the sole mourner.
Ah, at last, a perk to living a life without many—any—loved ones; you don’t spend much time grieving, unless you count the pervasive ache for the things you never had.
The minister, who came with the cemetery package and never even met Jerry Mundy, is rambling on about souls and salvation. Emerson hears only We shall never tell—the closing line in an old letter she found yesterday in the crawl space of her childhood home. It had been written in 1676 by a young woman named Priscilla Mundy, addressed to her brother, Jeremiah.
The Mundys were among the seventeenth-century English colonists who settled on the eastern bank of the Hudson River, about a hundred miles north of New York City. Their first winter was so harsh the river froze, stranding their supply ship and additional colonists in the New York harbor. When the ship arrived after the thaw, all but five settlers had starved to death.
Jeremiah; Priscilla; their sister, Charity; and their parents had eaten human flesh to stay alive. James and Elizabeth Mundy swore they’d only cannibalized those who’d already died, but the God-fearing, well-fed newcomers couldn’t fathom such wretched butchery. A Puritan justice committee tortured the couple until they confessed to murder, then swiftly tried, convicted, and hanged them.
“Do you think we’re related?” Emerson asked her father after learning about the Mundys back in elementary school.
“Nope.” Curt answers were typical when she brought up anything Jerry Mundy didn’t want to discuss. The past was high on the list.
“That’s it? Just nope?”
“What else do you want me to say?”
“How about yes?”
“That wouldn’t be the truth,” he said with a shrug.
“Sometimes the truth isn’t very interesting.”
She had no one else to ask about her family history. Dad was an only child, and his parents, Donald and Inez Mundy, had passed away before she was born. Their headstone is adjacent to the gaping rectangle about to swallow her father’s casket. Staring that the inscription, she notices her grandfather’s unusual middle initial.
Donald X. Mundy, Born 1900, Died 1972.
X marks the spot.

Thanks to her passion for history and Robert Louis Stevenson, Emerson’s bookworm childhood included a phase when she searched obsessively for buried treasure. Money was short in their household after two heart attacks left Jerry Mundy on permanent disability.
X marks the spot…
No gold doubloon treasure chest buried here. Just dusty old bones of people she never knew.
And now, her father.
The service concludes with a prayer as the coffin is lowered into the ground. The minister clasps her hand and tells her how sorry he is for her loss, then leaves her to sit on a bench and stare at the hillside as the undertakers finish the job.
The sun is beginning to burn through the thick marine layer that swaddles most June and July mornings. Having grown up in Southern California, she knows the sky will be bright blue by mid-afternoon. Tomorrow will be more of the same. By then, she’ll be on her way back up the coast, back to her life in Oakland, where the fog rolls in and stays for days, weeks at a time. Funny, but there she welcomes the gray, a soothing shield from real world glare and sharp edges.
Here the seasonal gloom has felt oppressive and depressing.
Emerson watches the undertakers finish the job and load their equipment into a van. After they drive off, she makes her way between neat rows of tombstones to inspect the raked dirt rectangle.
When something is over, you move on, her father told her when she left home nearly two decades ago. She attended Cal State Fullerton with scholarships and maximum financial aid, got her master’s at Berkeley, and landed a teaching job in the Bay Area.
But she didn’t necessarily move on.
Every holiday, many weekends, and for two whole months every summer, she makes the six-hour drive down to stay with her father. She cooks and cleans for him, and at night they sit together and watch Wheel of Fortune reruns.
It used to be because she craved a connection to the only family she had in the world. Lately, though, it was as much because Jerry Mundy needed her.
He pretended that he didn’t, that he was taking care of himself and the house, too proud to admit he was failing. He was a shadow of his former self when he died at seventy-six, leaving Emerson alone in the world.
Throughout her motherless childhood, Emerson was obsessed with novels about orphans. Treasure Island shared coveted space on her bookshelf with Anne of Green Gables, The Secret Garden, The Witch of Blackbird Pond
She always wondered what would happen to her if her father died. Would she wind up in an orphanage? Would a kindly stranger take her in? Would she live on the streets?
Now that it’s happened he’s down there, in the dirt … moving on?
She’ll never again hear his voice. She’ll never see the face so like her own that she can’t imagine she inherited any physical characteristics from her mother, Didi—though she can’t be certain.
Years ago, she asked her father for a picture—preferably one that showed her mother holding her as a baby, or of her parents together. Maybe she wanted evidence that she and her father had been loved; that the woman who’d abandoned them had once been normal—a proud new mother, a happy bride.
Or was it the opposite? Was she hoping to glimpse a hint that Didi Mundy was never normal? Did she expect to confirm that people—normal people—don’t just wake up one morning and choose to walk out on a husband and child? That there was always something off about her mother: a telltale gleam in the eye, or a faraway expression—some warning sign her father had overlooked. A sign Emerson herself would be able to recognize, should she ever be tempted to marry.
But there were no images of Didi that she could slip into a frame, or deface with angry black ink, or simply commit to memory.
Exhibit A: Untrustworthy.
Sure, there had been plenty of photos, her father admitted unapologetically. He’d gotten rid of everything.
There were plenty of pictures of her and Dad, though.
Exhibit B: Trustworthy.
Dad holding her hand on her first day of kindergarten, Dad leading her in an awkward waltz at a father-daughter middle school dance, Dad posing with her at high school graduation.
“Two peas in a pod,” he liked to say. “If I weren’t me, I’d think you were.”
She has his thick, wavy hair, the same dimple on her right cheek, same angular nose and bristly slashes of brow. Even her wide-set, prominent, upturned eyes are the same as his, with one notable exception.
Jerry Mundy’s eyes were a piercing blue.
Only one of Emerson’s is that shade; the other, a chalky gray.

My Review

"In Mundy’s Landing, bygone bloodshed has become a big business. During the rigorous winter of 1666, all but five colonists in the small Hudson Valley settlement died of starvation. Accused of unimaginable crimes, James and Elizabeth Mundy and their three children survived, but the couple were later accused of murder and executed."

Bone White is the third book in the Mundy's Landing Series and features many of the same characters including NYPD Detective Sullivan Leary, who solved the Sleeping Beauty Murders. All she wants is to be able to settle into this quaint community and leave behind the big city. Quiet is not what she gets when the elderly lady, Ora Abrams, that runs the town's museum decides that a skull in the museum will have answers as to who the skull belongs to, it is believed that it is the skull of a Mundy from 1666.

Emerson Mundy shows up from California to learn more about her descendants, her father killed himself and a note found by his body has Emerson wanting to find out more. Not long after she arrives in Mundy's Landing, a man is found hanging from a tree outside an inn, also with a note similiar to the one from Emerson's father.

Out of all of the characters, I liked Ora as she is the one with all the knowledge and stories about the original founders of Mundy's Landing. The story actually has two different stories at the same time. The one from 1666 survivors from the Mundy family and the current one in 2017.

I have been reading Wendy Corsi Staub's works for many years and it is always a treat. A taut murder mystery with enough twists to keep the reader interested. The writing is well done and enjoyable.

Snippet #1

They turned the horses back toward the barn. The storm was moving faster than expected. They hadn’t made it halfway home when raindrops began to tap their heads. By the time they were at the barn’s entrance, the rain was coming down in sheets. Jared’s hat had deflected most of the rain from his head, but wet clothes clung to both of their bodies.

She hugged her shoulders and felt a strong sense of calm. Unlike most people, she preferred gray, rainy days to sunny ones. The rain put her into a meditative mind and made her feel more in touch with the world. It was cleansing and peaceful. Out of the rain now with the wind blowing into the barn, a chill caused a shiver to ripple down her, and she hugged her arms closer.

Suddenly a warmth radiated into her back and covered her bare arms. She leaned backward into Jared’s chest as he rubbed the cold bare skin of her upper arms. His hands moved down the sides of her arms and traced to her hands. Crossed over each other in front of her, Kinsley’s hands laced themselves into his and she felt his breath on her neck, hot and urgent. He softly touched his lips to her neck and along her collarbone, then to her ear. She turned her face toward him and their lips met, softly at first. When she tentatively pushed her tongue past her lips to taste the rain on his, he groaned against her and pulled her closer, moving his hands to her stomach, where his thumbs brushed upwards to feather along the bottoms of her breasts.

Snippet #2

He stood quickly and grabbed his jeans, pulling them on while looking out the window. Then he turned back and, with an eerily calm tone, said, “Call 911.”

He was grateful that she didn’t waste time asking questions but immediately grabbed her phone and ran to the window, trusting his reaction. He stepped into a pair of boots and ran, bare-chested, down the stairs and out the back door.

The flames were still confined to one area of the barn, but he knew that it would be engulfed soon given how long it would take the fire department to arrive. While he ran toward the burning barn, his eyes glanced around and his mind raced into triage. He was relieved for a second when he remembered the horses had not been put back into the barn after the party. They were the closest to the fire so he shifted on the ball of his foot and ran around the side. Kinsley was right behind him when he reached the fence.

Snippet #3

She looked at the handsome man and decided she had a good reason to put off that last event now.

Maybe Ethel had done her a favor after all. She felt the warmth she had come to accept would be a constant feeling while she was near this man. It pleased her that he was playing along with her.

Her breath caught in her throat and her insides melted. He leaned down to her and she welcomed his kiss, immediately throwing her arms around his neck and pulling herself into his body. Everywhere he touched, it scalded. His kiss was deep, urgent, passionate. His desire for her was strong and obvious in his touch and how closely he held her, as well as the growing hardness pushing into her thigh.

Bio: Cynthia VanRooy, a three-time finalist for the San Diego Book Awards, a finalist for the Independent eBook Awards for Romance, and a finalist for the PASIC Book of Your Heart Award, came by her love of books early. She grew up the daughter of a career army officer and moved often. By the time she graduated from high school she had attended eleven different schools! It was difficult making new friends every other year or so, and she spent a lot of time happily curled up alone with a book. She would no sooner finally have friends, than it was time to move again. All she needed to relieve the loneliness was a library where she could always find her favorite authors.

She was living in Hawaii when she met her husband, a handsome young naval officer who swept her off her feet in the best romance-novel tradition. In fact, their first date was New Year’s Eve on Waikiki Beach. Life was setting her up to write romance novels, She just didn’t know it yet. And she was still moving every two years. Hawaii, Scotland, and Japan are just a few of the places she has called home.

She loves writing romance. In her books, she likes to explore the difference between what the characters think they want and what they ultimately discover they really want, a personal journey to which most people can relate. She finds the innate optimism and happy endings in the genre uplifting. Cynthia believes there is enough misery and despair in the world without putting it on the page. Romance is her small effort to bring a higher love vibration to the planet. It’s called light reading for a reason!
