THE DEVIL ORDERS TAKEOUT
by Bill A. Brier

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Mystery/Thriller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

A tax attorney with integrity...a powerful mobster determined to bend his will...

Grayson Bolt isn't about to compromise his integrity to help a notorious crime boss escape the cross-hairs of the IRS. But there's a steep price to pay for defying The Man--Grayson's beloved wife and older son.

There's only one way for Grayson to prevent his younger son, Jim, an innocent golf prodigy, from also being taken out: play a dangerous game of cat and mouse. And what will Jim be forced to do when the woman he loves gets ensnarled in a web of betrayal and deceit?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
“I’m afraid you’re going to get it hard, Mr. Bolt.” Costanzo had that fatherly tone of this will hurt me more than you. “Did you ever stop to think that there’s only one way of being dead, but many ways of dying?”
Grayson felt something cold touch his spine, all the way down. “I don’t follow.”
“Take your man Stockard. He killed two of your beloved family members, wife, and eldest son. Isn’t that right?”
A strangling tightness gripped Grayson’s throat. “That— that’s right.”
“Wouldn’t you say a part of you died too?”
“What’s your point?” Grayson’s voice erupted in suppressed panic.
“You don’t have to die to feel dead. I’m going to kill your other son. That’ll be your punishment.”
The blood drained from Grayson’s face. Just like that. Most people held the basic principle that no man should be punished for the deed of another. Costanzo was not one of them. Grayson would be cut right to the bone, and his son would be the sharpest knife Costanzo could use. Costanzo had spelled out the thought in invisible brushstrokes. It was there and Grayson had tried not to see it.
AUTHOR Bio
Bill grew up in California and went to Hollywood High School, then served in the Air Force as a combat cameraman.
After hiring on at Disney Studios as a film loader, he soon advanced and moved on to other film studios.
He earned a master’s degree in psychology. A big help when working with Trumpish Hollywood producers. You're fired!
During his more than twenty-five years in the movie business as a cameraman, film editor, and general manager, Bill worked on everything from the hilarious, The Love Bug, to the creepy, The Exorcist, to the far out, Star Trek and Battle Star Galactica.
Eight years ago, Bill switched from reading scripts to writing thriller/mysteries and driving racecars. After completing three award-winning novels, he signed with Black Opal Books. His first novel, The Devil Orders Takeout, is about a devoted father and husband who makes a deal with a real-life devil to protect his golf-prodigy son after his wife and older son are killed in a mysterious accident — and pays hell for it.
Bill’s second mystery, The Killer Who Hated Soup, is Book One in the 1950s The Killer Who series, and it launches this Summer. The Internet? Never heard of it. Smartphones? Who you kiddin’?
Energetic and eager to make his mark on what Time magazine called the next great boom town, Bucky Ontario leaves his daddy and little sister in Louisiana and rides a bus to Defiance, Oklahoma, a town not particularly adverse to murders, just the embarrassment of them when committed by high officials.
Book Two, The Killer who Wasn’t There, will be on bookshelves this fall.
Bill writes every day and golfs infrequently (that damn right knee!). His five children and eight grandchildren keep him busy going to birthday parties, and he never misses a one!
The Brier Patch is Bill’s wildly entertaining blog about his shameless early days in Hollywood. It’s on his website, billbrier.com, along with a contest linked to The Devil Orders Takeout, which will award the grand prize winner $1,000.
On a Pale Horse by Monica Corwin BlogTour!
The highly anticipating conclusion to the Revelations series is out now!
And behold a pale horse that carried the name death…. Management of The Underground, a New York club with a reputation for delivering a host of guilty pleasures, could have been a whole lot more fun if Cloris didn’t spend half that time avoiding Hades. Despite the burning attraction to the former God of the Underworld, she still harbors a nagging fear that her advances could rekindle the disturbing experiences of Hel’s hospitality. But when the four horsemen discover that it may be possible to hang up their mantels for good, Cloris is torn between her desire to no longer be a horseman and her hesitation that she could be anything other than death…. Regardless of the scars he gathered from enduring time at the hands of Hel, Hades craves nothing more than to immerse himself in Cloris’s attentions. Frustrated by his inability to convince her that he desires her in every imaginable way, he fears she only sees him as damaged or worthless. But when the horsemen decide to truly embrace mortality, he realizes that he will have to move quickly… or risk losing her forever. In a race to the end, can Cloris and Hades embrace the love they could possibly share or will their stubbornness doom the horseman to live a life worse than death —remaining horseman forever? On a Pale Horse is the exciting conclusion to the Revelations Series from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Monica Corwin. As I traveled through the camping ground and the wellness camp, I could see what Lottie meant by a slow start to summer. There was room for well over one hundred and fifty hikers, and that didn’t include the trailers I’m sure drove through occasionally, at the camp site. The wellness camp had about ten cabins with what seemed like only one being used and a lot of open space.
I made a point to travel through the wellness camp slowly so I could possibly find Kelsey and see if she wanted her bike back, but I only saw a few girls who looked to be about fifteen. They were lacing up their hiking boots while others were preparing for a swim. A few waved at me as I passed, others seemed shy and looked away from me. I tried not to be offended. To them I was an outsider, someone they should stay away from. Just like he had taught me to do. I waved back regardless and continued my ride over Faith Bridge. I could see the town crowning over the hill to my right, but the well-defined hiking trail to my left beckoned me.
Lottie can wait a little longer, I decided with a smile. Turning my front tire toward the dirt path, I took off with the girl’s excited laughter and shrieks from entering the cold-water echoing around me. Their voices faded behind me as trees thickened around me, wrapping me in a cool, shadowy blanket, shielding me from the sun, and silencing everything around me until I was left with only my thoughts.
A few months ago, leaving me to my thoughts would have been dangerous. Maybe even suicidal. In the past few years, I had gone through more turmoil than I thought possible, and it seemed like the pain was never-ending. No matter what I did, I couldn’t escape bad news.
I thought I had found the one, the person I was meant to be with, the one who’s supposed to be by my side for the rest of my life, but then it all fell apart. “It’s over, Mia.” I had been trying to fix a broken relationship; cheating, fighting, and abusive, manipulative behavior. I should have known it couldn’t be fixed, but I didn’t want to give up on him. I thought we loved each other, but it turns out that had been one sided too. “Mia, stop. You’re embarrassing me and you’re embarrassing yourself. It’s over, Mia. I don’t love you, I don’t think I ever did. You’re someone I settled for, you’re nothing. It’s your fault this happened, not mine. Now it’s time to move on. I have, and you should too.”
Trees moved past me in a flash as I peddled faster, taking my memories with them. But once those were gone, I was left with a harsh reality. The same ex who had told me I wasn’t worth anything and would never amount to anything is chasing me to ruin the life I had created without him. I shook my head as the path took a turn. Stop thinking about it. It’s over now. The small flickers of sunlight through the leaves and the light at the end of the tunnel of trees echoed my thoughts; a new life, one without him.
I broke free of the trees and came out on a stunning overlook. The path settled against the edge of one of the mountains, giving me a great view of Peak View, a small town the bus had stopped in for a short time, and the surrounding landscape. It reminded me a lot of Escape, but with more shopping, a high school, a military base, and more homes. It’s going to be packed in the upcoming months. Not that I could blame anyone for wanting to visit. I had been here only a few days and I already loved the little town. Even as I looked over the lush green landscape, I didn’t feel as far from my family as I had when it came to Wes. For the first time, in a long time, I genuinely felt at home. I didn’t feel the need to look over my shoulder. This is the place for me. This is where I can finally heal and move on. This is exactly what I’ve been looking for.
Taking a deep breath of the fresh mountain air, I realized I couldn’t wait to move on. I’d dive in head first, even if it meant accepting another gift I didn’t deserve from Lottie. If this is what they do, then I should accept it. It’s time to move on. Whether he wants me to or not. Turning my bike around to head back to town, I took one last glance at the overlook. The sun hanging over Peak View, the mountains keeping us concealed, and everything in me was screaming for me to take a leap of faith. And that’s just what I’ll do. I pushed away from Mountain Side Height lookout and headed toward town, thanks to the helpful signs on Morning Glory’s trail. I left feeling the best I had in years...I’d return when my life turned to shit again. As it inevitably would.
On the Beach By Steve Schmale Interview!
On the Beach
By Steve Schmale
Genre: Literary Fiction
Lenny Decker is fleeing the American Dream while trying to comprehend its reasons and rules after being rattled from an exposure to its possibilities. Set in the mid-1990’s in a quiet California beach town, populated with a cast of unforgettable characters, and replete with examples of some of life’s crueler—yet hilarious—ironies, ‘On the Beach’ is story of what happens when one young man’s dreams bump up against reality.
About the Author
Steve Schmale is the author of the book of stories ‘Nobody Bats a Thousand’ and the novel ‘On the Beach’. He is a native of California where he still resides.
From the author
Tell us about your genre. How did you come to choose it? Why does it appeal to you?
 Literary fiction. I did a lot of reading as a kid, mostly history and biographies, I didn’t really read any serious fiction until I had to read one of Hemingway’s novels to pass English to get out of high school. I wondered why people made such a big deal out of it, it didn’t seem that hard do, but when I gave it a try I found it quite a challenge to do well. It’s what I consider the most demanding type of fiction to do properly, something, if done correctly, is more than just a story, it’s something that hits people at more than one level, where the reader brings their life experiences into play to help create something unique and meaningful. To some people that type of writing is very worthwhile.
What do you find most challenging about the writing process, and how do you deal with it?
 The biggest challenged to me is finding the discipline to write. Procrastination is easy, and there is always something to do in lieu of the pain of sitting still and focusing, digging deep to create something you are proud to let someone read.  I haven’t deal with it well, I probably should have done more, but I’m proud of the work I’ve done.
When and where do you write?
 If I have something in mind I’m taking notes 24/7 whenever things I might use come to mind, but the actually writing and re-writing is done at the computer. What used to be staring at the blank page is now staring at the blank screen.
What have you learned about promoting?
 The beauty of indie publishing is anyone can publish a book. The bad thing about indie publishing is anyone can publish a book. There is a lot of stuff out there so it’s hard to get noticed. All you can do is try your best to get the word out. You can’t make people like your work, but when they do it’s very heartening.
What are you proud of as a writer?
  Writing a novel which draws praise from most critics, a piece of work which puts readers into a world and holds them there for 80,000 or so words is tough, it’s like climbing Mt. Everest.  No matter what the future holds, I’ve climbed that mountain once, and no one can take that accomplishment away.
If you could have dinner with any writer, living or dead, who would it be and what would you talk about ?
  John Sayles. He is a filmmaker and actor, but his first big break was winning a major award for a short story published in Atlantic magazine, and he is still publishing innovative books so I’ll always look at him first as a writer. We’d talk about literature, his films, and I’m sure a lot about baseball. He’s definitely a fan, and I wouldn’t doubt if he played. His film about the Black Sox’s scandal is terrific.
