The heroine from Out of Sight, Mia Jones, is loosely based on my daughter. Both are highly intelligent, professional women who suffered traumatic brain injuries. Each fought to recover and surprised a lot of people who hadn’t counted on the power of tenacity.

At the opening of Out of Sight, Mia is engaged to Charles Phillip Brooks III, aka Tripp. The seersucker-wearing, Gone With The Wind throwback, is based on several attorneys from my paralegal days. I took great pleasure in seeing Tripp finally get his comeuppance.

Hank and Mia first met when newborn Mia was place in the same foster home as Hank. He remembers her as pink, wrinkled, and screaming her head off. The four-year-old’s first impression of her was, “she’s just as pissed off at the world as me.”

Hank tries to keep his new-found feelings toward Mia a secret. One night his subconscious mind acts out what he won’t allow himself to do while awake.

Out of Sight is located in LaGrange, North Carolina. While the town is fictitious, there are many real small beach communities just like it along the Atlantic coast. If I could, I’d live on a tropical island and set every story along the shore somewhere.

Tripp owns a German Sheppard named Traveler. Mia is fond of the dog and mourns the loss of the relationship with the pet when she and Tripp break up. Despite the separation, Traveler plays an important role in helping Mia towards the end of the book.
