Cupid's arrow may have missed its mark…

Jimmy finally takes a vacation--and a chance on love--only to be abducted. His female companion originally thinks he had cold feet about their relationship, but Sean and Sara know there’s more to it. Jimmy isn’t the type to just up and disappear, let alone leave a lady stranded.

Setting out on their private jet, Sean and Sara reach the tropical paradise of Ocho Rios, Jamaica with sightseeing as the last thing on their minds.

With a gold coin being their initial tie to Jimmy’s kidnapper, Sean and Sara even speculate about the involvement of pirates. Yet as the hours pass, and there’s no word from Jimmy’s captors, Sean and Sara will need to figure out the real motive before it’s too late.

With help from their friend, Adam, back in Albany, the pieces come together and not a moment too soon.

Excerpt from chapter 1 of Valentine’s Day is Murder (McKinley Mysteries)

UNDER THE JAMAICAN MOONLIGHT

FOR A MAN WHO HAD given up on love, dining under the Ocho Rios’ moon reaffirmed that all things are possible. Jimmy Voigt sat across from Meredith, a woman who, just a couple months back, had been a stranger. She carried the black evening dress she wore elegantly, its straps loose and dangling over her shoulders. In the candlelight and a beautiful setting such as this, it was hard to resist her. A portion of him didn’t even want to try.

“Thank you for taking me with you, Jimmy.” She smiled at him, wistfully, as she lifted her wine glass for a toast. “To us.”

His lips twitched, but he wasn’t sure if the full expression showed—he was terrified of falling in love. He went through with the expected response, though. He clinked his glass to hers and watched as softness blanketed her features.

It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

They were both up with the sun and had met by the pool. They had spent the early morning strolling along the shore. With toes in the sand, they had shared whispered jokes and silly stories while the sea air cleared out any stench of the city and melted away stress. Tropical breezes also carried wafts of plant life and flowers.

“The Dunns River Falls was quite the experience.”

“You’re telling me.” He left out the fact that his knees had barked most of the way up. He found himself caring what she thought about him, which was a first since Clara.

While he had tried to put Clara from his mind, his ex-wife had a way of entering his thoughts at random intervals and at the most inappropriate times. He had loved her with his soul, but that hadn’t been enough. Maybe it was why he held back now. He feared that if loving someone with his entire being hadn’t been enough before, why would it be now? Yet, he had to shake the self-flagellation.

“The best part, though, I must say, was snorkeling. The colors of those fish. Absolutely stunning.” Meredith took a sip of her wine.

Jimmy’s eyes fell to her slim fingers. When they held hands, they intertwined perfectly with his.

He needed to put the past behind him and leave it there. Sara had told him to open his heart, but he was starting to think it was secured behind reinforced steel doors. Still, he appreciated how far he had come—and not simply in actual mileage, but also in the emotional distance he had traveled to ask Meredith to accompany him to Jamaica. Really, though, what fun was an island without a companion? Still, he wasn’t going to rush things and had ensured they had separate rooms.

Taking a long draw on his wine, he appreciated its flavor. He pursed his lips.

“You look mighty deep in thought.” Meredith laughed.

“Truth be told, I was.” If he allowed his mind to swallow him whole, it would. Enough of the scrutiny and inward reflection. He was determined to enjoy this moment in time—another wise piece of advice from Sara.

He reached across the table for Meredith’s hand. As hers molded to his, he had to admit that he felt better than he had in a long time. On some level, he felt more complete. If he had listened to his initial excuses, he wouldn’t be here with her. It was with that thought he realized she no longer wore the ring. He pinched his fingers around where it used to be.

She withdrew her hand and placed it on her lap. “You just noticed? I haven’t worn it since just before Christmas, but it was time for me to move on. I have a feeling it is for you too.”

Meredith’s husband had cheated on her after twenty years of marriage. She couldn’t forgive him. It was an offense Jimmy wasn’t sure he could have pardoned either.

Again, the internal talk would have him believe his situation hadn’t been the same. That somehow he’d suffered less the way his marriage had ended. All Clara wanted was more of him, yet it was a sacrifice he wasn’t able to make. He had continued to put the job first, and in the end, that’s all he had. Still, it had resulted in the same outcome as it had for Meredith—two hearts that had once been bound were ripped apart.

“I know you’re probably right.” Jimmy tried to smile. He hoped at least a glimmer of it came through. “I’ve been happy here with you. It’s been nice having a friend.” He knew it came out all wrong by the way her face fell and her eyes pinched.

“Yes, it is.” She cleared her throat as she took the napkin from her lap and put it on the table. “If you’ll excuse me for a moment.”

As she walked away, he felt like a schmuck, with a capital S. Why couldn’t he just put his reservations aside? What did he have to lose? His pride? He was certain his heart hung back, despite periodic suspicions to the contrary. All he had to do was breathe in, and breathe out.

His hand went to his neck and he stretched it side to side. It was then he felt a pinch and everything went black.

As Savannah's foundation begins to crumble, every decision becomes an unchangeable step toward an outcome that could have tragic repercussions.

Excerpt

I took a deep breath, breathing in the smell of the earth, the sweat of the horses, and distinctive smell of cotton balls hanging from plants in the sun. It relaxed me and made talking seem right. “I’m worried about Charleston. I think she got a second detention on purpose.”
“Why would she do that?”
I hesitated, wondering how he might react, but plunged into it. “I think she has a thing for Dillon Smith; she got detention again so she could see him. From what I hear, he’s always in detention.”
“Dillon. Huh.”
It wasn’t quite the reaction I expected. More of a thinking-it-over response instead of the disgust I felt.
I slumped in my saddle. “Well, I can’t believe it. Dillon. Ugh. He’s… well, you know. Remember what he wrote on the gym wall?”
Of course Ellerbe remembered it. Everyone had seen it. It didn’t bear repeating, but being a guy, Ellerbe had laughed it off like most of them.
“Can’t say I’d want him for a brother-in-law anyhow.” His face remained serious. Serious. Like that might happen.
“You don’t think… oh, my gosh, she couldn’t possibly let it go that far. Why did you even have to suggest it?”
He laughed at me. “You’re so gullible. It’s just a school thing. She’ll be over him as soon as the next guy whistles at her.”
I so wanted to believe that. “You think?”
“This is Charleston we’re talking about.”
That was the end of discussion for him. He didn’t understand the implications of it all. His eyes played over my face, and I knew he was laughing at me for being so worried.
He pushed Snow into a trot. “Come on. To the creek.”
Ellerbe’s answer to every problem in the world—ride!
I sighed, thinking maybe he was right. Charleston could be pretty fickle. Maybe it was nothing to worry about.

The Point of a Gun by Steven W. Kohlhagen Book Post and Review~

The Point of a Gun
Steven W. Kohlhagen
July 18, 2017
Edition Barenklau
ISBN-13:978-1545279748
ISBN-10:1545279748

America is experiencing a dramatic increase in terrorist attacks—by jihadists, white
supremacists, and Mexican cartels. In the face of these failures by the U.S. Government intelligence and law enforcement bureaucracies, a group of ad hoc vigilantes has exploded onto the scene. And, surprisingly, this shadowy and deadly vigilante group appears to be led by at least one of the U.S. Government’s most senior and trusted Counterterrorism insiders. Is it the head of the FBI, the Army’s Senior Special Ops, or perhaps the CIA?

Whoever is the true identity of the mysterious and powerful terrorist known only as Samms, the thrilling action of the vigilantes’ frequent murders of terrorists in the act and the attempts by investigators to discover the mystery of the rogues’ identities take the reader on a wild ride. As the President and his investigators struggle to discover the real identities of the vigilante leaders, the murders—both terrorist and vigilante—ratchet up.

The questions then become: what are the risks to America if the public gets wind of the vigilante murders? And what does the president intend to do with the senior Counterterrorism vigilante officials if, in fact, they are found alive?

An Interview with Steve Kohlhagen

How has the rise in terrorist acts in the US and worldwide influenced your writing?

The rise in world-wide terrorism–and the inherent conflict in democratic free societies in trying to deal effectively with terrorists, while being sensitive to and respecting individual freedoms–motivated and sparked the book. I am asking with my work if a democratic society can protect itself and remain free.

In your book, the central mystery is based on the identity of the vigilantes in the top of the U.S. Government Counterterrorism bureaucracy. How is this different from other thrillers?

The usual thriller identifies a specific crime-fighting protagonist and a set of "bad actors" hunting and being hunted. In The Point of a Gun not only are the true identities of the protagonists unknown, but the mystery unfolds as they are both the hunter (of terrorists) and the hunted (by the U.S. Intelligence community). These senior government officials are tasked with finding the vigilantes…who may be themselves!

How does setting affect your writing? Could the same book be set in other locations?

In this case, yes. I chose the settings partly from personal knowledge, but also partly for their ability to logically host each action sequence. For example, El Paso and Phoenix were great settings for scenes with Mexican drug cartels; Grand Central Station, Times Square, and the U.S. Capitol, Washington, D.C. play host to jihadists and a symbolic target; Columbus, OH sets the scene for Somali jihadists; Colorado Springs, Co is the stage for a white supremacist militia; and Laramie, Wyoming for its historical role in American vigilantism

What is your writing process like? Do you have special routines or systems that help you?

I learned to multitask as an investment banker, managing trading activities. It has carried over into my writing. I love my characters and they, not I, actually write the story. So I'm always aware when I'm working on something else, that they are always crying out to me to get back to them, creating a continuous pressure for urgency to my writing.

In thriller writing, plot pacing is integral to an exciting story. How do you combine your pacing with other key plot points to great effect?

In The Point of a Gun, the main characters are forced into meetings with senior Counterterrorism officials and the President. Like all meetings, these are not exactly filled with excitement…! So the trick was to keep the reader aware of the progress of the meetings and the mystery, while fearing–and knowing–that the next terrorist attack was coming on the next page.

My Review

This book is about the increase in terrorist attacks—by jihadists, white
supremacists, and Mexican cartels, which ironically seems to be based on the events in the past 20 years or so. Right from today's news. Are we ever going to win this fight, will we be able to eradicate the terrorist threats?

A group of vigilantes is taking out these terrorists before they can complete their goals. These people are a select group of people with different skills and knowledge. The President of the US is determined to find out who these vigilante people are, mainly because he objects to what they are doing, but rather because they are rogue government employees and it is illegal for vigilantes to do what they are doing. The President knows that what they are doing is for the good of the US but it is still wrong.

I found this book to be very fast paced and character driven, a real page turner. Even though these people are vigilantes and taking things into their own hands to eliminate the terrorist threat, I had to cheer for them. The author is knowledgeable in his facts about terrorism and terrorists to different countries and ideals. I always enjoy reading a book by an author that can stick to what he knows. In The Point of a Gun, the story is an exciting thriller that will leave you thinking, is there a group out there that is really anhilating the bad guys? I would not be upset if there was.

If you love a good political/mystery/thriller, then you will enjoy this book!

"Bell imagines a suburban world where no one really knows what's happening behind all those drawn blinds. In Bell's take, though, even the people inside don't really know what's happening. That's where his brilliance, and the brilliance of Bring Her Home, rests."--Providence Journal

In the breathtaking new thriller from David Bell, bestselling author of Since She Went Away and Somebody I Used to Know, the fate of two missing teenage girls becomes a father's worst nightmare....

Just a year and a half after the tragic death of his wife, Bill Price's fifteen-year-old daughter, Summer, and her best friend, Haley, disappear. Days later, the girls are found in a city park. Haley is dead at the scene, while Summer is left beaten beyond recognition and clinging to life.

As Bill holds vigil over Summer's bandaged body, the only sound the unconscious girl can make is one cryptic and chilling word: No. And the more time Bill spends with Summer, the more he wonders what happened to her. Or if the injured girl in the hospital bed is really his daughter at all.

When troubling new questions about Summer's life surface, Bill is not prepared for the aftershocks. He'll soon discover that both the living and the dead have secrets. And that searching for the truth will tear open old wounds that pierce straight to the heart of his family...

My Review

Bill Price's life has been in turmoil ever since his wife died. His 15-year-old daughter Summer is also suffering the loss of her mother. One day Summer and her best friend Haley disappear. Not too long after they disappear, the girls are found, one of them Haley is dead and Summer is badly beaten.

As would any parent be , Bill is livid, how can someone do such a horrific thing. He sits vigil by his daughter's bedside, along with his sister. There are so many questions, how did the girls happen to be taken, who did it and why? As days go by though, things don't seem to be as simple as they look. Many questions are asked by the police that that Bill has no answers for.

As time goes by, things get even more difficult. Through memories of Bill's, we learn more about his wife and her death and some problems he has had with Summer. Things are not as they seem and Bill is determined to find out what happened to the girls. Some of the answers he is not prepared for and not what he had thought.

This book is a great psychological thriller and will keep the reader turning the pages. There were times I was a bit frustrated with Bill, but as a parent, I could not understand what he was going through, having never been in that situation, but I did have empathy and as the book progressed, a lot of things were a bit easier to understand. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it!

Life wasn’t all that great when you were dead.

Piper was the head baker of Secret Confections in the scorching hot small Texas town of Babylon. Or...at least she was until she died. Struck by one of her own out of control cupcake trucks, Piper’s soul left her body and managed to somehow find its way into Purgatory. Turned out, the waiting room for Heaven and Hell was a small, invisible town in Texas.

Just her luck. She’d always wanted to leave Texas and ended up being stuck there for the rest of her afterlife.

But things weren’t all bad. She has a new bakery and new semi-kind of life. Until a guy rushes into her shop and dies right on top of her brand new ceramic floor.

Which might not have been that bad until he uttered the one word that was instant death to the livelihood of a baker with a brand new business.

USA Today Bestselling author S.E. Babin has a passion for writing books with a paranormal twist. Whether it's romance or mystery, she loves taking the norm and turning it into the extraordinary. Her love of reading turned into a curious exploration to see whether or not she could write her own novel. Beginning with discarded pages of angsty novels and a slightly popular reimagining of Beowulf's Grendel in her high school English class, Sheryl spent way too much time in the library, killing any chance of her becoming a cheerleader or anything even remotely cool.

Five years spent hoping there was still a chance. For Jenny Foster, coming home was the scariest thing she’d ever faced, but she was tired of being haunted by the one boy – man – she’d ever loved. Jack Ryan knew he only had one chance to make things right with Jenny; a chance he didn’t deserve, but he knew he wouldn’t waste it. It had already taken him a lifetime to see what was right in front of him all along, and he’d be damned if he let her slip away again. Maybe time heals most wounds, but when it comes to wounds of the heart, Jenny knows time only builds walls to protect what’s already broken. Only love can heal a wounded heart, and for Jenny Foster that meant letting in the one person who broke it in the first place – Jack Ryan. And he was waiting for her; ready for her to come home…to him.

EXCERPT
The rope ladder swayed back and forth as the woman relentlessly moved up the sheer cliff rung by rung. Her fear and horror increased as the dangerous ascent brought her closer to the cave the elders had warned to avoid. Anyone who dared to enter the sacred place faced death, for it held within it the monstrous creatures of legend, the Asakkus—those that would bring about mankind’s destruction. If the visions that drove her to seek out the cave were right, it meant they were coming, and everything was soon to end.
The chill wind whipped down from the snow-capped peaks of the Rocky Mountains, stinging her skin as it howled and swirled across the desert towards her, its intensity increasing to nearly gale force. A strong gust hammered against her back and she instinctively tightened her grasp on the wooden rung, leaning into the cliff’s face, knuckles white from the exertion.
She was almost two hundred feet up, and the rocks below looked dark red in the failing light. The woman closed her eyes. Don’t fall. One slip and they would break her body to pieces. She glanced up at the top of the cliff.
Only fifty feet more.
Only fifty feet and she would reach the cave, finally learning the truth that surrounded the beings she had dreamt of; the creatures her people had created folklore about for centuries.
A high-pitched scream shattered the landscape. The woman immediately ducked her head. Feeling exposed, she scrambled up the ladder as fast as she could, scraping her cold hands against the cliff’s jagged edges and bruising her knees but oblivious to any pain because that shriek had not been human.
Moments later she reached the top and pulled herself up onto a flat ledge. The woman crouched down, breathing deeply in both fear and anticipation, continuing to listen for confirmation. Within seconds another inhumanly loud shrill echoed through the air. She pressed her fingers into her ears to muffle the piercing sound. When she dropped her hands, she noticed her fingertips were smeared with watery blood.
It had to be the Asakku.
She walked toward the mouth of the cave, hoping she wasn’t too late. In addition to the drawings and countless stories that drove her pursuit, the discovery of an elongated skull by her father in this very same region had created an unstoppable obsession to find one alive.
The woman had been bravely coming to the caves year after year. Each time gaining the courage to venture further and explore, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Asakku. The woman had to know what she was facing; then there would be an answer exposing their weakness. She must not fail if the human race was to survive.
