Description Odyssey of Ashes by Cheryl Krauter

Odyssey of Ashes: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Letting Go begins with the sudden death of Cheryl Krauter’s spouse. Five months later, in a stroke of irony and magic, her husband wins a long-desired guided fly-fishing trip in a raffle―and Cheryl decides to go in his place, fulfilling a promise to scatter his ashes by a trout stream. Part I of this memoir is an account of the first year after Cheryl’s husband’s death, where she becomes an explorer in the infinite stream of grief and loss, a time traveler between the darkness of sorrow and the light of daily life. Part II concludes with stories of the poignant and humorous adventures she had during the ensuing year. Tying it all together and woven throughout is Cheryl’s account of the creation of an altar assembled during the three-day ritual of Los Días de los Muertos. Poetic and mythological, Odyssey of Ashes is a raw story of loss and the deep transformation that traveling through darkness and returning to light can bring.

Odyssey of Ashes by Cheryl Krauter

Guest Review by Laura Lee

Sometimes, from ashes a greater understanding can rise. Cheryl Krauter lost her husband, John suddenly. In the middle of the night, John woke with back pain. Only minutes later he had collapsed on the floor and was not breathing. Completely devastated and unsure of where to turn next, Cheryl began doing the things that we all do when we experience grief—trying to take things one day at a time. While she was trying to rebuild her life, she learned that John had won a raffle that he had applied for before his death. The raffle is for a once in a lifetime fly fishing trip. After some internal debate, Cheryl decides to go on the trip by herself, and bring John's ashes along with her to spread across the river. Madison river in Montana is a well-known spot for fly fishing. Because John was a devoted and skilled fly fisherman, the couple had been to Madison river once before, in 1988. Now it was 2017, and Cheryl was arriving on her own, with her husband's ashes. To say that this memoir touched my heart would be an understatement. I definitely teared up a few times while reading this, and I challenge anyone to keep a dry eye while Krauter remembers her life with her husband and their son. Many of us have experienced grief in our lifetimes, but not everyone can write about it with the grace and tenderness that Cheryl writes with. Her prose is both touching and heartbreaking, while sometimes also being funny and lighthearted. In 'Odyssey of Ashes: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Letting Go,' a full picture of a life, friends, family and hobbies is created in order to honor the man that Cheryl Krauter loved, and I cannot think of a more fitting tribute.

Excerpt Odyssey of Ashes by Cheryl Krauter

In fall 2018, a year and a half after returning from Montana, I gather photos, sugar skulls, bones, and other mementos for my Día de los Muertos altar that’s become a tradition over the past several decades. Each year, I celebrate the Day of the Dead by honoring all of those who have died, who have crossed over into other worlds.

Times passes on, as it does, and with each year there are more photos and mementos to lovingly place on the altar. The spirits of those who have traveled to the other side are invited to return, lured by favorite treats and a bottle of whiskey (a drink once heartily enjoyed by many of those represented in the tableau of the dead). I imagine them feeling enticed to cross through the veil between the living and the dead.

Black candles burn to light the way for the dead on their journey from these unseen realms to visit those of us left behind, still bound to the earth. I continue creating the altar. In one photo, my mother and father stand together, grinning at the camera and holding a sunflower as they stand in front of an old copper- hooded brick fireplace in a home whose cottage walls, long ago knocked down, have been replaced by a gaudy, brownish-orangish stuccoed two-story mansion overlooking the ocean. My mentor, my teacher, dead nine years now, is still present with me; at times, it seems he’s just over my shoulder in my psychotherapy office. As I stand in front of the altar, he looks on from his perch on the mantle. His kind but always-searing gaze, burning with uncomfortable questions and keen insights, follows me around the room.

Gently, carefully, I place photos of two young cousins, tragically gone—one from mental illness, the other from an overdose that took him too young— next to each other. Drugs and alcohol being contributing factors in both deaths, in a fit of dark humor, I question their seating arrangement—directly next to the whiskey— on the altar. Such are the inner conversations within me as I hold each photograph in my hands, looking at faces and places once so familiar, now distant memories. Grandparents, friends, and my first love, taken early by ALS, line up next to one another, a collage of the troubled and beloved departed. Callie, my faithful dog, who had to be put down a month after John died, sits forever beautiful beside Lucy the cat, my familiar—the two joined together in death as they most certainly would never have been in life.

I sit with these souls who have traveled on, remembering stories, images of moments spent laughing, crying, and screaming, times that will never come again but that live deeply within me. This evening, I laugh, cry, occasionally scream, alone. I tell my dead loved ones stories of my life, of what has occurred for me since they left. I think that my critical mother would be pleased with me, and that my sensitive and troubled father, who always wanted to write a book himself, would be proud of my two published books.

Night falls; it is a silent and respectful ritual. John in his baseball cap, smiling and waving at the last game his son pitched, looks out onto the room, and his eyes seem to find mine as I light each candle and sit in front of all those who are no longer here. In the months since scattering his ashes that violent, stormy day in Montana, I have felt his presence fade, and I imagine him flying about in some universe or other as he explores a territory that I cannot enter. His photo goes in the center of the altar, and I place my hand over his waving one, as if a touch, a word, a plea for contact might actually draw him back.

I do not linger too long, however, as the ache in my heart begins to crack open into a gaping hole. I move between gratitude for the time we had together and a strong, surreal disbelief that John is actually on an altar for the dead and not in the next room in our home. Día de los Muertos is a celebration of those who have died, a colorful festival that sends encouraging missives to departed spirits for the success of their journeys. It holds both mourning and celebration of those who have died, but I feel no celebration in John’s passing, only a mournful emptiness that longs for his return . . . and again this strange sense of unreality overcomes me. Will that ever change? I wonder.

Two years after John died, less than a year after my trip to the Madison River, my friends Bill and Shash gave me a gift: a personal mythology created for me by a Celtic storyteller. The myth chosen for me was the story of Mis, who, while little is written about her, is known as the original wild woman of Irish mythology. Mis was the daughter of Dáire Dóidgheal, a powerful ruler from Europe who set out to invade Ireland. A fierce battle raged for a year and a day until Dáire was eventually slain, which brought the battle to an end. In the days that followed, Mis came to search the bloody battlefield, looking for her father. Upon finding his dead, bleeding body, she became overwhelmed with grief. Casting herself over his mortally wounded body, she began to lick and suck at his wounds like a wild animal trying to heal him.

Unable to bring him back from the dead, a madness came over her, and she rose up into the air and flew away into the heart of the Sliabh Mis mountains. Mis lived in the mountains for many years. Over time, she grew long, trailing fur and feathers to cover her naked skin, and great, sharp claws that she used to attack and tear to pieces any creature or person she met. She could run like the wind, and no living thing was safe from her. She was believed to be dangerous, and all feared the wildness of her grief. It came to pass that the king in those parts, Feidlimid Mac Crimthainn, offered a reward to anyone who would capture Mis alive. For fear of her, no one accepted except for one man, a gentle harper by the name of Dubh Ruis. Dubh Ruis was able to entice Mis out of hiding and make love to her. He coaxed her into a pool and, over a period of days, washed away the dirt and scrubbed away her feathers and fur.

He combed her hair, fed her, and made a bed for her. Eventually, he brought her back to civilization and married her, and Mis then lived a long, full life. Mis is the archetypal madwoman who lives within each of us. She screams the rage we are afraid to express, she wails the grief that threatens to swallow us whole, she expresses the unacceptable inner voices we suppress out of fear. At the heart of Mis’s story is the need to honor mourning in all its wild expression of rage and grief so that one can once again open a broken heart to love. In Ireland, this expression of mourning is called Caoine, something the rest of us might know as keening or funereal dirges. These primal mourning songs date back to the Etruscans and the wakes held by the ancient Greeks.

They briefly join the mourner with the departed in the liminal space between life and death; through keening, the mourner can let go of the grief and return to daily life. Returning from the wildness of Montana and the Madison River memorial, I was called back from the underworld to reenter the upper world of my day-to-day life. I was living in two worlds, one an urban scene of responsibilities and schedules, the other an inner wilderness that flowed constantly beneath my feet like a river as I walked through each day and night. Disorienting and unpredictable, it was exhausting work to keep track of myself as I simultaneously struggled with a sense of unreality and negotiated my life as a responsible human being residing in the world of the living.

No one really knew the depth of my struggles— living in the land of the dead even as I paid taxes, laughed at parties, and then drove home alone in the dark. Somehow I managed to continue my daily existence even as, like Mis, I wailed and raged in an imaginary mountain cave.

At least he doesn’t know that. As far as he knows, I’m Ronnie Kray reincarnate.

The blade against his neck is small enough to hide, big enough to kill. It’s from the kitchen upstairs.

A man has got to protect himself, doesn’t he? Especially one who’s been through what I’ve been through.

‘I’ll let you go. But answer one question. What’s my name?’

These past months have been sheer hell. I’m exhausted. I can’t cope with it all anymore. Just when I think it’s over, something else happens.

‘I… I don’t know. We’ve never met.’

‘Disappointing. After all we’ve been through.’

‘Anything? Time to test that.’

EXCERPT:

“Bianca!” Nicole shrieked.

Bianca embraced her friend. “You look amazing!”

Nicole planted her hands on her slim hips. Her sundress flowed to her knees and flattered her waist. Long blonde hair, five seven, and flawless ivory skin. Her blue eyes shined. The woman could have been a model if she wanted to, but found her passion as a beauty blogger. “Thank you. Come on in.”

Looping her arm with hers, Bianca walked with Nicole to the kitchen after setting her gift on the designated table. When they entered the kitchen, Bianca spotted Judy.

“Bianca! Welcome.” Her red hair shined as always.

“Let me help you, Judy. I can’t just stand around and let you do all of this for me.” Nicole stood in front of a plate of ham and grabbed the butcher knife from Priscilla’s, Chad’s mother, kitchen set.

“Nicole.” Judy sighed. “You’re the bride. You should be mingling with your guests.”

“There will be plenty of time for that.” Nicole nudged her shoulder and sliced the meat onto a serving tray.

Bianca made herself comfortable on a bar stool. “Having fun so far? You seem more relaxed now.” That was a good sign.

Nicole beamed. “I am. I can’t believe the wedding is next weekend.” She exhaled. “I’m so nervous.”

“Not about marrying Chad, I hope,” Judy said as she tossed the salad.

“Can I help?” Bianca stood.

Judy pointed for her to sit down. “No, I won’t have the both of you helping. Nicole’s the bride so she can get away with it.”

Bianca returned to her seat and folded her hands in her lap. She figured Judy was in her zone so she wouldn’t offer again to help her in the kitchen. “Everything looks amazing.”

Judy touched a hand to Nicole’s shoulder. “I can’t tell you what it means to me that you asked us to cater your wedding. Thank you.”

Nicole smiled. “Are you kidding? I wouldn’t have anyone else cooking for me.”

Bianca’s heart warmed at the friendly exchange. With Nicole marrying into the high society Davis family, she could have chosen top-notch caterers to serve her reception meal. Yet, she’d chosen Edenville’s best. There was no one better than Judy, who could cook and bake along with her husband, Richard.

“I do have a question for you my friend.” Nicole directed her attention to Bianca.

“What?” Bianca asked.

“I think you could get along with at least one of Chad’s—”

Bianca held up a hand to stop her. “Before you start setting me up with all of the groomsmen, I’ll pass.”

“Oh, Bianca. Really?” Nicole huffed.

“I’ll let you know if I change my mind.” Bianca winked at her.

Nicole paused in her slicing of the ham when her phone rang in her dress pocket. She stared at the screen but didn’t answer.

Read an excerpt:

0 Jasmine

Smack in the middle of Santa Ana on a Friday night, gang-funk psychedelia, the animal snarl and faint butane odor of nitrous-juiced import cars, the streets undulating and ratcheting like a grungy arcade game—rumble, whoosh, clickety-clack. The city was still new to Jasmine Frank, this sprawling expanse of damp concrete, swaying palms, salty beach sweat, and steaming antifreeze. The japchae and the spicy fish tacos and the pulsating afro grooves, the cackling Chicano rap, the cacophony of indecipherable shouts coming at her along Westminster Boulevard—yes! She got off on the staccato ghetto thrill of it all, closing her eyes, lost in the jagged rhythms, the music and the traffic, crisscrossing like a spastic radio dial. A constantly moving mobile night life.

Sooooo different from what she and Jordy were used to back home in that deadened whitebread cul-de-sac, north Garden Grove. In their new life, it felt as if there were raging pool parties around every cinder-block corner, drugs and condoms handed out like candy, cool kids as far as the eye could see. Plenty of assholes, too, but who cared about them? You just ignored them, and they went away, bothered someone else.

Jordy’s voice whispered hot in her ear, but he wasn’t in the car with her now, he was back at Tommy’s party. She couldn’t catch her brother’s words. It was as if they were buffeting on the humid wind outside her window. Or maybe she didn’t want to hear him. She tuned him out, left him back at Tommy’s house. She laughed at that, then felt a little bad. Just a little.

The inside of the car looked new—it even had a spiffy aftermarket audio deck with a touchscreen—but it was an older ride, some kind of Volkswagen according to the steering wheel. The driver (what was his name, again?) had let her thumb down her window to let the night in. She’d made him turn off his USB stick full of sugary pop right away, in favor of the nightsong. The hazy world swirled, and her body with it. She grooved in the contoured seat.

Jasmine glanced over at the dude, caught him ogling her legs, which she knew looked fabulous beneath the hem of her blue dress. His gaze both mortified and delighted her. Dude was OK looking but nothing special, and of course she knew what he was after. But she aimed higher, deserved better. Deserved more. That’s what Jordy told her, and that’s what her mom used to say, too.

Hell, the guy was good for a ride, anyway.

“How much farther, my duuuuude?” she sang out, full-throated, and she swore she could see her voice splay out colorfully and blast out the window into the night.

LOL, she thought, like actually conjuring the individual letters. She giggled, loving it. What’s wrong with me?

“Few miles,” he said, smirk-voiced.

He was wearing a silly dark fedora that he thought made him look sophisticated or something, but she knew it was only there to hide his thinning hair. She remembered him from the vitamin store a few days ago, when this all started. He was harmless, like a puppy dog. If you’d told her then that she’d end up alone with him, shotgun in his VW a few days later, high as shitballs, rushing through the late-late Santa Ana night in search of burgers, she’d have laughed in your face. Nice eyes, though. A good set of blue eyes could take a guy a long way.

She found herself balling up her fists and drumming the dash and screaming, “Fuuuuuck iiiiiiiit!”

Holy crap, something was in her system, gooey and euphoric, making her feel as if her head was twisting up and away like some fancy warm firecracker. Everything exaggerated, everything spinning out, like just now this hopped-up neon-yellow Toyota ahead of them, its tires chirping on the concrete of the intersection, couple of teenagers’ hands waving frantically out the sunroof. Heading toward the beach, probably, the bonfires, the giddy drunken dancing at the shore. Jasmine squealed laughter, wanting to go with them.

But she was hungry, Jesus Christ! Whooaaa hooooooo!

Food first.

“Well, hurry up, then!” she said nonsensically, realizing after she said it that she was responding to whatever the driver said a few minutes ago.

They were stopped at a light, and she was tapping her foot.

“This probably isn’t the greatest idea, you know,” he said, right hand resting on his short-throw gearshift. “Tommy’s gonna be pissed. At both of us.”

“Jeez, man, you’re bringin’ me down.”

“You don’t want Tommy pissed at you.”

“Awww, he’s a big ol’ softie.”

“I’m serious.”

“He’s cool.”

He gave her a look. “Girl, you’re thinkin’ of someone else.”

“Sheesh, I’ve known Tommy forever.”

“Be that as it may, you don’t—”

“Hold up, did you just say, ‘Be that as it may’?”

A pause. “Shut up.”

Jasmine started laughing so hard that she could barely breathe. After a while, her leaking eyes opened blurrily on the car next to them, and she saw a large Hispanic man staring at her as if he couldn’t figure her out. That was fine with her. She waved goofily at the dull-faced man, and then he pulled away when the light turned green. A few moments later, someone passed them in an underlit red Subaru WRX, sound system booming, windows tinted so black that it was like looking into the devil’s eyes. The rally car swerved liquidly around the traffic ahead of them and was gone as if it had never been.

“Oooooh,” she breathed.

Her laughter had run its course. It seemed like they were hitting every goddamn signal, and it was harshing her chill.

“What’s your name again?” Lolling her head toward the driver.

“Mark.” He looked annoyed, and that made her start laughing again. “It’s Mark.”

When she caught her breath, she said, sighing, “Let’s fetch those burgers and then go right back to Tommy’s, all right, Mark? Sound like a plan? If I don’t get something to eat, I’m gonna faint dead away.”

Jasmine hardly knew what she was coming out of her mouth. She sounded like her mom, she realized distantly. Every once in a while she’d blink hard and fall into a clarity gap in which she could curse Tommy and that guy who’d given her the pills, Derek, the weirdo with the tats. She was surprised Jordy’d let that guy get within twenty feet of her. But shit, who cared, she felt gooooood. Although she could sense that she was approaching the end of it—fuck!

She gripped the straps of her purse tightly, like holding on to the lapbar at the top of one of the insane rollercoasters at Magic Mountain, way up I-5, north of Los Angeles. That’s what she felt like right now. She remembered her mom taking her and Jordan up there to Valencia years ago, blitzing on so many goddamn coasters and so much candy and funnel cake that they’d felt nauseated and lightheaded for days after. That was before Karl came into the picture, before the fun drained out of the world.

The purse straps felt funny. Slippery. She glanced down and found she was holding on to a Safeway grocery bag. It was heavy.

Whatever.

But then all of a sudden, beneath the chemical bliss of whatever she’d ingested, her throat was raw, and she felt like crying. It was as if she were catching intermittent glimpses of an abyss that was beneath her at all times. The sensation was all wrapped up in Jordy, her twin brother who she both loved and hated, and what they’d done months ago. Sometimes she knew for sure that they’d made the right decision and were on their way to a future that meant something—like, absolutely. Other times, she was certain that there was no future, at least along this path … and nothing but doom lay on the horizon.

And now she knew she’d done something extra stupid, and she was heading toward an immediate future she wasn’t prepared for at all. She knew these things, but her body wouldn’t let her feel their full import. It left her fingers sweaty and shaking, barely holding on to this slippery Safeway bag. She pictured her mother’s face, and then the tears were closer than ever. She felt as if her lips were on the verge of murmuring—Mommy.

“Here it is, coming up on the left,” Mark said. “Yeah, I can definitely go for a Double-Double. This was a good call.”

Jasmine perked up, leaned forward, took a look around, wanting to squeeze every last drop of whatever was vibrating in her veins.

Westminster Boulevard seemed abruptly empty now, desolate almost, and it felt like seven hours had passed since she’d gotten in this stranger’s car.

“Where’d everyone go?” she whispered. “I mean, where’d everyone go?”

As the car slowed and eased into the turn lane, Jasmine felt a twitch of hollow nausea, and the eternal abyss—the one that was always beneath her—began to widen. She turned back to the open window, sucked in the night air in huge gasps, forced a beatific smile, tried to lose herself again.

It wasn’t working.

Mark turned into the dark, empty parking lot and immediately began shouting.

Jasmine’s head felt like a gob of Hubba Bubba. She felt Mark’s frustrated temper like a soft pummeling up there, and she brought disembodied hands to her face to massage her temple. Without realizing it, her head had fallen against her door, and she was idly watching the dead-of-night traffic continue to drift down Westminster Boulevard toward the 405 overpass. It was an endless procession of vehicles even at this ungodly hour, and why was she even out here at the edge of nowhere with this Mark person? The Safeway bag was even more slippery now, and it felt wrong in her grip, unnatural, and somewhere deep down she knew she was in trouble because of it.

Mark was still yelling, and now he was asking her a question, a repeated question, but all she could do was listen to the lonely night, the cars and vans and trucks whooooshing past. She closed her eyes, locked onto the repetition, the endless mournful sighs and howls of tires on asphalt, rising and then fading into the distance, one by one. That was really what Santa Ana was all about—a bunch of restless people on the move, all the time, on their way to anywhere else.

Except her.

Except Jasmine Frank.

She would always be here, trapped in SoCal amber, looking outward and yearning for the other side. Even if she found someone to take her to Santa Ana’s edge, like Mark had just done, she’d always be left gazing out into a great unknown, like a fish staring out of a murky bowl, and there’d always be someone yelling at her and telling her what to be or where to go.

As exhaustion began to press down on her, as well as increased nausea, Jasmine’s awareness fractured, and Jordy’s voice came into the mix, and then her mom’s, and she just wanted to go home. Home! Not the little hovel in Santa Ana that she shared with her brother, but her real home, where her mom was, when the world was good and promising.

She lifted her heavy head from the door, and she turned toward Mark.

He stopped yelling abruptly.

“Hey, are you all right? Are you crying?” His expression was one of genuine concern, and she felt a sudden warmth toward him.

“I don’t feel so hot,” she said, smacking her lips with distaste.

“Let’s get you home.”

Every once in a while, someone said just the right thing. Today it was this guy’s turn. Mark. That was his name. The man with the hat.

Jasmine smiled at him.

“Really?”

Seven years ago, Kate Hartfield’s little sister disappeared.

An ordinary summer day of fun at the lake turned into a nightmare when young Emily Hartfield suddenly could not be found. When badly battered body parts were discovered three days later, the investigation concluded that they were Emily’s and the case was closed as an accidental drowning.

Now Kate has returned to her hometown in the Catskills for the first time since her sister’s death, for a work retreat. While at her boss’s lake house, she briefly spies a familiar face.

It’s Emily.

She’s all grown up, but Kate knows her sister’s face better than anyone. The sighting reignites the doubts Kate has always had, and forces her to revisit all the mysterious circumstances that surrounded that day. As she desperately tries to track down the girl she saw at the lake house, Kate discovers shocking secrets from the past, confronts her own guilt from that day, and becomes obsessed with uncovering the answer to one question.

What really happened to Emily?

EXCERPT:

Back at her apartment, Kate peeled off her clothes and threw them in a corner before crawling into her twin sized bed. She stared up at the ceiling, her eyes painting it with lush green trees and soft wood trails. It had been six years since she left, but she could still smell the clean mountain air. She could still feel the leaves slapping against her arms as she and her cross-country team ran through the woods. She could still hear the soft fireflies zipping through the quiet of the night, and taste the fresh raindrops that would fall softly onto her face. And she could still see her little sister, in her bright yellow swimsuit, smiling at her from the shallow end of the lake, her face partially blocked by the blinding glow of the setting sun.

Kate remembered the first time her memory of Emily had started to fade a little. It was a little over two years after Emily died. Up until then, every detail of Emily always lingered at the periphery of her brain. She didn’t even need to conjure it up, it was just always there. Every freckle on her face, the sparkle of her bright blue eyes, the softness of her lush blond hair. The smell of the vanilla sugar body splash she wore every day.

But then suddenly, on an otherwise ordinary day, Kate woke up and, for a few seconds, Emily’s face was fuzzy. Her memory did not have its usual depth and clarity. Kate had trouble feeling Emily’s silky hair through her fingers.

The memories returned in full force a few moments later, but the shock of it had engulfed her like a tidal wave, pulling her down into a deep depression. It was the first time Kate realized that her memories of Emily would not always be as strong and clear as they originally were. That over time memories would take a new form. They would become more like looking back at old photographs or home movies, rather than the very real feeling of Emily standing right there in front of her.

Kate reached for the small container on her nightstand and shook out two pills. Every so often, she found that alcohol was not enough to blur her memories and lull her peacefully to sleep. The pills snagged against the back of her throat as she swallowed them dry and waited listlessly for darkness to fall.
