Book Title: The Prisoner of Paradise

Series: The Paradise Series, Book 1

Author: Rob Samborn

Publication Date: 30th November 2021

Publisher: TouchPoint Press

Page Length: 333 Pages

Genre: Commercial Thriller, Historical Fiction, Magical Realism

The world’s largest oil painting. A 400-year-old murder. A disembodied whisper: “Amore mio.”
My love.

Nick and Julia O’Connor’s dream trip to Venice collapses when a haunting voice reaches out to Nick from Tintoretto’s Paradise, a monumental depiction of Heaven. Convinced his delusions are the result of a concussion, Julia insists her husband see a doctor, though Nick is adamant the voice was real.

Blacking out in the museum, Nick flashes back to a life as a 16th century Venetian peasant swordsman. He recalls precisely who the voice belongs to: Isabella Scalfini, a married aristocrat he was tasked to seduce but with whom he instead found true love. A love stolen from them hundreds of years prior.

She implores Nick to liberate her from a powerful order of religious vigilantes who judge and sentence souls to the canvas for eternity. Releasing Isabella also means unleashing thousands of other imprisoned souls, all of which the order claims are evil.

As infatuation with a possible hallucination clouds his commitment to a present-day wife, Nick’s past self takes over. Wracked with guilt, he can no longer allow Isabella to remain tormented, despite the consequences. He must right an age-old wrong – destroy the painting and free his soul mate. But the order will eradicate anyone who threatens their ethereal prison and their control over Venice.

Trigger Warnings.

Violence, a rape scene, a torture scene.

All physical reactions were a result of emotion, whether true or fabricated—this Angelo knew. He had studied De Arte Gladiatoria Dimicandi, written by the fencing master Filippo Vadi nearly one hundred years prior. Angelo’s current master, Salvator Fabris, often disagreed with Vadi, but Angelo always felt it was due to a gripe with Vadi’s admiration of Ducale da Montefeltro. One tactic Master Fabris agreed with was a man’s control of his emotions, particularly a heightened sense of awareness and rational capacity in the face of mortal danger. These fundamental tenets were critical in the art of sword fighting, and Angelo found himself with such sensations now.

Unfortunately, he did not have his rapier.

As the next blow came to his gut, he buckled over and dropped to his knees, landing in a light frost from the overnight flurry. His breath punctuated the crisp air.

“Enough,” said the older man with long gray hair, a fur-lined coat, and red leather shoes with heels that bore him up three fingers from the ground. Leon Costa held a black walking stick bearing a carved ivory hare’s head that had beady red eyes—a fitting accessory for a distasteful man known to scamper away from the slightest danger. He tapped the cane against the cobblestones. The two ruffians pummeling Angelo stepped aside, allowing the older man to stand over him. “We don’t want to incapacitate the overgrown urchin,” Costa said, baring surprisingly straight white teeth. “He’s no good to us convalescing. Beating you, Mascari, is akin to being fellated by a dog.”

“Siòr,” Angelo managed, his breath visible in the early December air. He clasped his hands in a plea. “I promise you. I shall have your money in two bouts.”

If you win, that shan’t be enough to cover what is owed.”

“Master Fabris forbids my only means for a larger purse. What am I to do?”

“You are to do what it takes. I am your master. You do what I say.”

“Siòr Costa,” a voice called from the alley entrance.

The Bird Brothers approached them.

“Siòri Uccello,” Costa said with a deep bow. “I paid the tithe this morning.”

“I trust it was received,” Vito replied. “That’s not why we’re here.”

“Then to what do I owe the pleasure?” Costa asked with a nervous grin.

“If you are seeking pleasure,” Ivan said, “you’ll find it at your usual brothel. You’re late, are you not?”

“I have business here with this man.”

“Angelo Mascari’s business is now our business,” Ivan said, taking a step forward.

Costa’s henchmen instantly positioned themselves to protect their capo. “Are you demented?” the little man said to them. He brushed them aside before raising his hand in apology to the brothers. “I beseech thee, siòri,” he said. “Mascari—”

Vito joined Ivan and glared at Costa.

“As you wish,” Costa said, bowing again. With that, he led his men out of the alley and disappeared.

“Gràssie, siòri,” Angelo said, getting to his feet. He bowed with deep humility. “How can I thank you?”

Ivan lifted Angelo’s head by his chin. “We’ll get to that. Do you know us?”

“Sì,” Angelo said. “What I mean is I know of you. Of your… positions.”

“I am Ivan Uccello, and this is my brother, Vito.”

Angelo bowed again.

“It seems income from your profession has come at an unacceptable trickle,” Vito said. “Am I not correct, Angelo?”

Angelo studied the two, curious as to what purpose such men of prestige had involved themselves in his affairs.

“We know all about your debt to Costa,” Vito continued. “You convinced him with your great talent that you’d soon be able to repay him for your rapier and training expenditures. Salvator Fabris does not come cheap.”

“I did not need to convince him,” Angelo retorted. “He is as confident as I in my abilities and what they will bring.”

“Why wouldn’t you be cocksure?” Ivan asked. “You dream of riches and advancing your station. You show phenomenal promise but have yet to prove yourself. A few ducats in local night matches isn’t cutting it, is it? Perhaps you thought Costa would be more patient.”

Angelo fought hard to maintain his outward calm and conceal his true sentiments. How did these men know this? Costa had been pushing him to enter European tournaments. The purse was generous, but Master Fabris felt he wasn’t ready. Angelo agreed. One loss or injury would be devastating for his young career. He brushed the dirty snow off his breeches and pulled himself to full height. “What business is it of yours, my finances?”

Ivan chuckled and sized Angelo up with his small, dark eyes. “Angelo, we find you here, bruised and beaten in the literal gutter of life. We are well aware of your destitution, and we’d like to help. You do not want to betray Master Fabris, but if you do not, you cannot repay Costa.”

“Ah, what a bind,” Vito said.

“Costa will continue to demand payback, and you will be left without a single coin, nothing but a fading reputation of unfulfilled glory to revisit in your poor nights. Now”—Ivan continued with an exaggerated hand wave—“that would be a shame. The world will have lost a great swordsman if you’re obliged to pull out of the sport. Perhaps it is inevitable…” He studied Angelo’s face and clucked his tongue. “But perhaps not. We have a proposition for you. A solution that will benefit us all.”

EXCERPT:

It’s ten a.m.

I was supposed to meet Roland fifteen minutes ago, and I’m still slumming around in a t-shirt and panties.

“Just a minu—ULP!” I yell, tumbling out of bed.

Legs, meet sheets.

Legs, get intimately acquainted with sheets.

Legs, dump me face-first on the floor when I try standing with the sheets tangled around my calves.

Yep, I basically just hog-tied myself.

I go down hard, groaning as another knock rattles the door. This time, it’s firmer.

“Callie? Are you all right in there?” Roland’s voice drifts through the thick wood.

Oh, boy.

“M’fine,” I mumble into the pillow that fell with me, thankfully cushioning my head smacking the floor. “Just tripped. Give me a sec.”

He doesn’t say anything, but his silence whispers skepticism.

Who could blame him?

I fight off the sheets, totter to my feet, and dump the bedding back on the mattress before snagging a pair of running shorts from the suitcase I’d left open in the corner easy chair.

Hopping on one foot, then the other, I shimmy into them, yanking them up over my hips. Then I stagger to the door and pull it open with my arms moving faster than my brain.

Eep.

One look at the bosshole makes me realize what a disheveled mess I am.

We’re talking oversized shirt falling off one shoulder, hanging down just long enough to hide my tiny shorts. Bedhead hair sticking up like a cactus—I’m surprised I don’t scare him—and I don’t even want to know what I look like without my makeup.

Especially not after sleeping with my face smooshed in a pillow.

He’s my total opposite.

How predicable.

Even dressed down, he looks so cool and collected and put together that he’d wreck a GQ model.

He’s just wearing a t-shirt and a pair of jeans with thick-soled black workmen’s boots—but it’s a designer shirt, designer jeans, designer boots in fine leather.

The dark-grey shirt clings to his chest like it’s painted on, pouring over his beastly pecs and dipping down sculpted abs in ridged patterns.

God. Even the stitching on the short sleeves strains against the rock-hard cut of his biceps like it’s struggling to hold them in.

Dark, faded jeans hang low on his hips in the right and oh-so-wrong way, held in place by a leather belt that just barely keeps them from dipping down to pure sin.

A little lower, and I know they’d reveal the narrow V of his pelvis.

The fit hints at the power between his legs, from his thighs underneath to a piece of him I dare not imagine.

Not if I want to keep my last worn thread of sanity.

Chapter One

It is a truth universally acknowledged that to trick a rich man out of a large sum of money, one must be very clever and very patient. In the hotel coffee shop, I stopped drumming my fingers on the table and with great effort stilled my twitching foot. I’d been born clever, but the whole patience thing was taking a lot longer. Across the room, Heather sat serenely, her rolling suitcase beside her, nose buried in a book on the politics of Silicon Valley. Her thick, dark hair was pulled into a high ponytail and the tortoiseshell glasses perched on the edge of her tiny nose gave her a studious air. She wore a tattered gray Boston Red Sox T-shirt that dwarfed her in an adorable way. She looked perfect. It had taken me forever to come up with the character’s exact look, but it was going to work. I just knew it. The team had made solid progress with our new San Francisco targets; I estimated we’d hear from half of them within the next week, which was pretty typical. But nabbing this one would make the road trip an unqualified success. “How’s the book?” I murmured. The miniscule mic, invisible below my dress’s collar, transmitted to an equally covert bud in Heather’s ear. “Incomprehensible,” Heather muttered without moving her lips. “Did you actually read this?” Blech. I grimaced. “Every word, unfortunately. He’s babbled about it non-stop on LinkedIn.” I looked between the shop’s door to the lobby and its door to the street. Since he lived in a building around the corner, he’d most likely enter from the street. Glancing down at my watch, I sat up straighter. It was 8:45 a.m. In the past year, Linc Townsend had posted three times before 9:00 a.m. on his Twitter page that the only proper way to start a Friday morning was with a flat white from this particular coffee locale. There! The door to the street swung open, revealing a tall man in his late thirties. His trademark white-blond hair was cropped close to his head. “Showtime,” I whispered to Heather. “Turn slightly so that the book is more obvious and he can see your shirt.” Heather took a sip from the cup on her table and angled herself to face the counter directly. She raised the book so that it rested on the table, the front cover obvious. Then she pushed back her shoulders; the logo on her shirt floated above the book. Townsend strode to the register and smiled at the barista. “My usual.” After paying, he walked to the edge of the counter to wait for his drink. Damn it, he was pulling out his phone. If he got immersed in scrolling, he might not look up. He might not see her at all. My gaze lit on the tray of lids, pitchers, and sugars at the edge of the counter. “Get up and get some milk for your drink,” I whispered. “Bring the book.” Heather stood, her eyes still looking down at the pages. Then she transferred the book to one hand, keeping her finger inserted halfway, the picture of someone who couldn’t bear to lose her place. She picked up the coffee cup with the other and glided across the shop, looking very much the intense grad student she was pretending to be. “Excuse me,” she said softly to Townsend without looking at him. She put her cup on the counter and poured milk with the same hand, propping the book on the counter with the other. As he moved a foot away to allow her some space, he gave a fleeting look at her face and at the book on the counter. I grinned. Five, four, three, two … “What do you think of this book?” he asked Heather, tapping the hardcover. “I’m very familiar with it.” I bit my smile under control and waited for Heather’s opening line. I’d worked hard on it. Heather looked up at Townsend, hazel eyes wide as if he’d startled her. Then she let her brow furrow and her mouth fold into a cute purse, as if she were seriously considering the question. “It’s uneven,” she finally said, meeting his gaze directly. “Some chapters are engaging and thought-provoking. But others are much less impressive.” Nodding to herself as though her opinion was the final word on the matter, she gave him a small dismissive smile and took her coffee and book back to her table. I suppressed a laugh. Heather was such a pro. I might write the lines, but Heather always nailed the delivery. Townsend gaped at her, his mouth slightly parted. His gaze traveled from the beat-up sneakers on her feet, up the length of her faded jeans, and rested on the Red Sox T-shirt. Then he looked at Heather’s face, once again absorbed in the book. His gaze softened on the glasses and ponytail. Gotcha. I had agreed with one of Andie’s key assessments from her deep dive into Linc Townsend’s life: even though high school was twenty years in Townsend’s past, he was still nostalgic about the bespectacled brunette beauty he’d dated his senior year. Before she dumped him on her way to Harvard. He was so distracted that the barista had to say “Linc” twice when his flat white was ready. Here we go. Adrenaline pulsed through my veins. I cleared my throat, ready. Townsend hesitated for only a moment before crossing the room and sitting, uninvited, in the other chair at Heather’s table. She looked up, annoyance clear on her face. “Wh –ah, can I help you?” His words transmitted clearly through the mic clipped to Heather’s bra. “You’ve intrigued me. I want to know which chapters you found worthwhile and which were lacking.” Taking a deep breath, I spoke as quickly and clearly as I could. Heather was used to the ventriloquist act, but if I flubbed a word, she would sound unnatural. “I enjoyed the chapters about how Silicon Valley types are extreme idealists. How life is just a matter of discovering great ideas through conversation, innovation, and education.” I paused so Heather could catch up. As soon as Heather spouted “education,” I started again. “But I think the book’s conclusion that Silicon Valley is a libertarian-like ideology within the Democrat Party—well, that’s a bit of a stretch.” Heather delivered the last sentence flawlessly and raised her eyebrows. “Satisfied?” Linc Townsend set his flat white on the table and leaned forward. I waited for a quick lecture of approval, especially since, as the creator of a successful tech start-up, he’d been quoted at length in the parts of the book that Heather said she liked. But he asked her an important question before mansplaining. “What is your name?” He offered a manicured hand across the table. We’d hooked him already.

My Thoughts:

Scammer Girl by Michelle Dayton is one of those books that is a pleasure to read. It is not very often that a scammer/cheat is taken down by another scammer. Jo has a team of four young women who scam the married cheaters. With not a lot of options, Jo has a PhD in psychology and above-average computer skills, she is hurt from a breakup and decides to start up her company to make ends meet, five years later she is successful. Then she meets Jamie March. Jamie despises anyone who is involved in online crime. His brother falls victim to an online romance scam. Turns out that he is in love with one of Jo's girls. Thus starts a love/hate relationship between Jo and Jamie, she does not trust him, but it is hard when her heart becomes involved.

Written well, with a wonderful love story that blooms into a hardcore relationship, but there is always the trust angle. Jo does not trust easily, and Jamie has been hurt before. Can the two of them get together? You have to read the book!

Scammer Girl is a fun enjoyable read, I don't often read romance stories, but this one sounded intriguing. I will have to go and read the first book in the Tech-nically series. I read it in a few sittings and really enjoyed it! I give it 4 stars!

Rachel Ferrer fled the church when she was eighteen, burying her trauma to chase her dreams, only to have them thwarted when her husband died shortly after their son was born. Now she and her tarot-reading roommate do their best to get by.

Nicolas Rivera should be happy. He answered his call to the ministry and has held a position in the church he grew up in for more than a decade. He’s married and he loves his kids, but something in him has shifted and the life he thought he wanted doesn’t feel like it fits anymore. When his childhood best friend’s widow reappears in his life, Nicolas tells himself that his desire to be near Rachel is altruistic.

Until it isn’t.

Rachel and Nicolas have been on the periphery of each other’s lives for years, but when their worlds collide, attraction sparks, lightning crashes and the walls they have been hiding behind begin to crumble.

Lightning Crashes is an exvangelical romance that examines what happens when we build our lives on faulty foundations and what can happen when we leave that behind and step into the sun. Follow Rachel and Nicolas down the path of temptation, through their yearning slow-burn, and into their happily ever after.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / Google Play

EXCERPT:

Rachel lifted the quilt covering Nicolas and slipped beneath it. He made as much room for her as he could, but his legs were already hanging over the far arm, his back pressed against the cushions.

Rachel didn’t need much room as she snuggled into his side, tucking the quilt back around them. “It’s freezing in here,” she said, her voice husky and low, her breath feathering against his neck.

“You need to check your insulation,” he said. “And probably get new windows.”

“I’ll get right on that,” she said in a voice that implied the opposite.

She shivered, and Nicolas allowed himself the indulgence of pulling her closer against him. In the name of keeping her warm. “What are you doing up?”

Rachel’s hand found his waist under the blanket, her fingers icy against his bare skin, but he didn’t dare flinch, lest he scared her off. “I wanted to see if you showed up. I didn’t mean to fall asleep.”

“It’s good you got some rest.”

“More like I sobbed myself to sleep in Naomi’s bed, but yeah, sleep was good. How are you?”

He sighed, at a loss for words to describe how he was feeling. His face ached, his body felt drawn, like he’d worked out too hard without enough food afterward. Nicolas couldn’t remember the last time he’d eaten. He wasn’t even sure he had a digestive tract anymore. Who had room for food when they were filled with heartbreak and betrayal? Was it possible to be yawning open with emptiness and full of dread and darkness all at the same time? It felt like the same thing, and yet entirely different.

Rachel’s hand was playing over his torso in a way that she probably didn’t even realize she was doing, but in a way that was distracting, allowing temptation to edge in on the periphery.

SNEAK PEEKS:

A Brazen Agreement by Tamara Gill

When decidedly on the shelf, a lady must sometimes take matters into her own hands and throw rules aside and do what one must to gain a husband.

Sutton raised her brows. Well, what did that mean? Was the guide giving her permission to misbehave? She pursed her lips in thought before the sound of another patron talking nearby caught her attention. Sutton slammed the book closed and quickly slid it back under the bookcase just as a couple passed her farther down the aisle. Sutton left the store, walking back to Hanover Square with determined strides, her maid hard on her heels. One must take one’s life into her own hands if one were to gain a husband.

Which would mean she had to be determined and go after what she wanted. She stopped on the footpath in thought. Did she like any gentleman enough for her to behave in such a way? To act instead of waiting for the gentleman to always come to her?

Sutton started off again, stepping around a large gentleman before slamming directly into a wall of muscle. She stumbled back, her footing beyond redemption before she landed with an oomph on the flagstone path. “Oww,” she complained, stopping herself from rolling a little and rubbing her behind in a most unladylike way. She glanced up, about to give a set down to the oaf who had run into her before the words dried up in her mouth. The horrified sight of Lord Jersey met her eyes. Logan Carleton. Of course, it was him she had slammed into. No one else would get in her way like that man did.

Ass that he was.

A Duke at Midnight by Stacy Reid

“Are you suddenly shy?” she asked in a tone rich with warm amusement. “I assure you, I am aware ladies and gentlemen alike attend masquerade balls to indulge in their wicked sides, the sides they would normally leave to languish and collect dust motes.”

Detecting the wistful hunger in her voice, Robert was struck with the sudden desire to fulfill her needs. And perhaps in doing so he might fulfill some of his needs, soothing the chill of loneliness that had lived with him for five years. “Should I confess it to you your sensibilities will be shocked.”

Her soft laugh was one of curiosity and want.

“I daresay no one has ever tried to shock them before. Please do your worst; I am made of stern stuff.”

Robert was becoming increasingly charmed. “I am glad I listened to my cousin, or I would have missed meeting you.”

“Clearly you procrastinate to spare my sensibilities. My good sir, I came here tonight to find a rake like you.”

“And you are so certain I am a rake, hmm?”

“A gentleman would have returned inside the instant I sat unwittingly in the dark beside him,” she said huskily.

“Very well then,” he drawled. “Will you be my lover for the night?”

Her sigh was one of relief and pleasure. There was no hesitation or doubt in her. Here was a woman who knew what she wanted and was about to take it.
