Synopsis:

Gambling With Murder by Lida Sideris

A late-night call is all it takes for rookie lawyer Corrie Locke to kiss her day job at the movie studio goodbye and do what she does best: flex her sweet P.I. skills and go undercover to find a senior who’s missing from a posh retirement community. One small stumbling block: skirting past security to gain inside access to the exclusive Villa Sunset. Time to call in the heavy artillery. Besides former security guard turned legal assistant—now wannabe P.I. --Veera, Corrie relies on a secret weapon: her mother, a surprisingly eager addition to Corrie’s team. Armed with enough attitude and pepper spray to take down a band of Navy Seals, Mom impersonates a senior to infiltrate the Villa, Corrie and Veera in tow. Turns out the job’s not as easy as they’d thought. These seniors have tricks tucked up their sleeves and aren’t afraid of using them.

The action gets dicey as the missing senior case turns into attempted murder by a criminal mind who’s always one step ahead. Corrie’s hot on the trail, but finds more than she bargained for…especially when her mother becomes a target.

Chapter One

Luck be a Lady

I maneuvered around shattered glass, splintered picture frames, and fragments of bubble wrap strewn along the cracked cement floor. Something crunched or crackled beneath my every step. Empty spaces joined hands to form a footpath meandering through the old warehouse. The beam of my flashlight circled around stacks of crates, blankets, old tires—

“Ninja One, see anything yet?” Veera Bankhead’s voice sputtered through the walkie-talkie cinched onto my belt.

Dressing up like ninjas had been Veera’s idea. To help us blend into the night. We wore matching black tunics over black slacks. The hood hid my long hair. A facemask rendered me incognito. Only the slit across my eyes kept me from tripping. Veera was posted in the parking lot outside to discourage unwelcome visitors.

“Looks like a hoarder’s paradise.” I stepped over a pile of well-used sneakers.

“Any idea of what we’re looking for?” she asked.

“Oh, the usual hidden-in-a-warehouse items. A barrel labeled ‘TNT’. A nondescript briefcase filled with rolls of cash. Dorothy’s ruby slippers would be nice.”

By day, Veera and I worked in the legal department of Ameripictures Film Studios. Tonight’s side gig was connected to our day job…by a nearly invisible thread. Props had gone missing from a high-budget movie currently in production. A police investigation was underway, but Veera suspected an inside job. She’d convinced studio security into letting us take a look. An anonymous tip led to a Los Angeles warehouse hidden beneath the 405- freeway. I stepped gingerly over dented soda cans to stay on the path.

“We gotta find something,” Veera said. “Our reputation’s at stake.”

She didn’t mean our reputation in the legal department. She meant our reputation as quasi-professional, unlicensed private investigators. I had my father to thank for showing me the P.I. ropes. Investigating suspicious deaths was what I did best, with help from Veera. It had earned us a level of respect from the studio security crew. That’s how we got the nosing around for missing props gig.

“I still say that new intern is behind the thefts,” Veera said. “He’s been hangin’ out at the prop house every day.”

“Isn’t he inventorying the props?” I asked.

“So he says,” Veera replied.

I had low hopes of finding anything tonight but I had to admit, this was the perfect location to hide stolen goods. A baby elephant could get lost in here. “Did you find out who owns this place?” I asked.

“Working on it,” she replied.

It didn’t hurt matters that Veera had handled parking lot security before becoming my legal assistant. She had connections far and wide in the Southern California security guard world.

I pinned the beam of my light into a dark corner. “That’s strange.” Four large pieces of luggage lay side-by-side, atop a long folding table. Everything surrounding me was in stacks and piles. I quick-stepped closer. The luggage exteriors, aluminum handles, and zippers looked new. Why store unused luggage in a place with worn-out, broken-down stuff?

“Oh-oh,” Veera said.

“Hold on.” I grabbed a suitcase and slid it closer to me. I shone my light on a combination lock. Next to it sat a small keyhole. Pulling out a paperclip from my pants pocket, I shoved it into the keyhole and jiggled it around.

“Two unmarked vehicles drove up,” Veera whispered.

We’d parked my car behind the warehouse. I’d left Veera hiding behind a bottle brush shrub near the entry.

I popped open the lid of the suitcase. Folded bedsheets lay on top. Easing them aside, I gaped at the blood-red cape with a stylized golden “S” on the back. “It’s Superman.”

“The cars parked next to each other,” Veera said.

To the side of the cape lay a pillowcase. I ran my fingers over something odd-shaped and bulky inside. I unwrapped it to find a one-of-a-kind, golden gun.

“No way.” A cigarette case formed the handle. The trigger was a cufflink and a fountain pen served as the barrel. It was a prop gun from a James Bond film.

“Two muscular guys came out of a van,” Veera said. “There’s a third-person taking his sweet time exiting a Prius. Looks to be someone smaller, older by the way he moves. And he’s wearing a dress, which means he could be a female. Headed your way. If there’s a backdoor, I’d use it.”

“Can’t. I hit the jackpot.” I spun around. Where to hide?

Review

I am not going to start the review by rehashing what the book is about but I will tell you what I thought.

A sassy non licensed P.I, Corrie Locke, who is also a rookie lawyer and her side kick former security guard for a movie studio, Veera, are asked to find a missing resident from a posh retirement home called Villa Sunset.

Dominic went missing, leaving behind his identification, keys and other things that makes his friend suspicious. They find once they get there that is more than one resident that may know more than what they are saying. They need to include Corrie's mother in the investigation as she is the perfect foil in finding the missing man, she will fit right in.

There are many characters in this crime spree, and a spree it is, with all of the residents hiding something. Turns out they are a bunch of gamblers with enough secrets that could turn them into killers as there are other unsavory people in the mix of crazy characters that are after them.

This novel is funny, witty, and a bit scary, but it keeps the reader wanting more on the road to finding the missing man. Keeping track of all the characters that are in the book can be a challenge. I really liked Corrie, and her mother, not having read the other books in the series, I would still say that if the others are like this one, maybe a tv series? Lots of zaniness goes on. I think I will go back and read the first book in the series but for now I give this book 4 stars, I really enjoyed it.

I received a copy of the book for review purposes.

EXCERPT:

“Putting you out of your misery and replying to the man… anddd done!” she shoved my phone back into my hand.

I stared down at the screen and sure enough she had replied.

Layla: I’d really like that. When are you coming into town?

My breath caught in my throat. Before I could recover my equilibrium, my phone buzzed.

Vic: In about 2 weeks. I’ve got a business meeting. I’ll send you my travel plans, and we can set up a time to meet.

My heart fluttered in my chest. It was happening. I was seeing him again.

“Did he respond?” Alex asked.

“…He said he’ll send me his travel plans and we’ll decide when to meet up.”

“See! Easy peasy.”

I shrugged, “I guess.”

“Oh my god! That’s why you made such a big deal about this! You like him!” Alex pointed a spatula at me.

“No, I don’t!” I shouted, the heat in my cheeks betrayed me.

“Yes, you do! Your voice does this weird ass high pitch wail when you lie. It just did it. You like him! You like him!” she sang.

“Okay, okay… You’re right I like him. I mean but it’s wrong. I shouldn’t like him. I’m a fangirl nothing more.”

“You’re saying fangirl like it’s a damn swear word. What’s wrong with being a fangirl?”

“It’s a geek thing.”

“So normal people like me wouldn’t understand is what you’re saying?” Alex huffed.

“No! That’s not what I meant!”

She rolled her eyes, “What do you mean?”

“I mean like it makes me a total creep. Like what happened with one of my online friends she liked this TV writer she met at a con. They fooled around a few times then word got out and everyone was calling her a star fucker.”

“I hardly call a TV writer a star,” Alex raised an eyebrow.

I shrugged, “A star in the world of conventions.”

“For such outcasts you nerds always be shittin’ on each other.”

“Yep, everyone is terrible always and forever.”

EXCERPT:

Bella

“Bella, Bella,” The gorgeous stranger whispered.

I let out a quiet sigh because I loved the way he called my name. His voice was gentle, like rustling leaves on a breezy night. With a smile, I tipped my head toward him. The moon hid behind a thin cloud, but its light was enough for me to see his chiseled jaw, long nose, and full, sexy lips.

“I love your baby blue eyes, Bella Bell,” he whispered again, lowering his face to mine. “Do you love me?”

“Yes,” I whispered back, my heart thundering in my chest as his hazel eyes looked straight at me. Oh my, he is going to kiss me? Yes … yes … Wait, maybe I have to be bolder. Swallowing, I placed my hands on his muscular hips.

“Bella,” he said, caressing my red hair before his hand stopped on the back of my neck and pulled me closer.

I closed my eyes, waiting for his warm kiss to touch mine, but nothing came. Clenching my jaw, I cupped his face with my hands and coaxed it toward me. Oddly, instead of kissing me, he called out, “Bella! Bella! Bella!” At the same moment, I heard loud sounds, like someone banging on the door. What the …

As much as I wanted to ignore the annoying interruption, I opened my eyes to find that the handsome, chiseled-jaw guy had disappeared, and my hands clenched my pillow a few inches in front of my face. It wasn’t real … but who dared to disturb my dream? I couldn’t moan for too long because the banging became louder, followed by my mom’s irritated voice. “Bella, how many times do I have to wake you up?”

Ugh, couldn’t Mom have woken me up a bit later, at least after I got my kiss? I groaned.

Jumping out of my bed, I opened the door to see my mom glaring at me. She was wearing a blue blazer and pencil skirt, ready for work at a local library as the senior librarian. In her late fifties, she looked great. She had fair skin and no wrinkles, and was a bit heavy at almost five feet tall. Her new hairstyle, short with blonde highlights made her look younger. I could see a flicker of jealousy in my dad’s eyes whenever a man glanced at her in awe. How I wished I had inherited her fair skin and would look like her when I was older. However, my older sister got our mom’s looks and I looked more like our dad. But thanks to the height from my dad, I was three inches taller than my mom.

A whiff of jasmine from her perfume hit my nose like the fresh air of spring. But my mom’s eyes and expression were far from gentle: They were more like a brewing storm.

“Bellalina Elizabeth Bell.” Her voice was loud and high when she called my full name—which she did whenever she was super upset. “You aren’t a kid anymore. You are almost twenty-two, for God’s sake. Why can’t you wake up on your own? I can’t believe that I have to wake you up like this in the morning,” she scoffed, and turned her body toward the kitchen. “Wipe your drool and brush your hair before going out.”

The corner of my mouth was damp as I wiped it with the back of my hand. As I followed my mom down to the kitchen, I tied my shoulder-length hair back with the hairband that was always around my wrist.

“That’s your fault,” I grumbled, and sat on the tall chair at the kitchen island where she’d already put a half gallon of orange juice, a box of cereal, breakfast sausages, six boiled eggs, and a pile of toast, jam, and butter. “I found an effective way to wake up without your help, but you complain about that.”

My mom almost rolled her bright blue eyes at me, but she restrained herself. “You set five different alarm clocks to wake you up every day. Five alarms, Bella. You refused to use your phone alarms and bought five metal twin-bell alarm clocks instead. And those are loud enough to wake up the whole neighborhood.”

“But that’s effective,” I protested, helping myself to a glass of orange juice. “You know I’m not a morning person. Then when I found a way that works, you don’t like it.”

“Those damn alarm clocks can wake up the whole neighborhood,” she said slowly as if I didn’t comprehend her words the first time. I widened my eyes, and my mom sighed.

She opened her mouth to say something but was interrupted by Mel’s entrance. Mel was willowy, five-ten with tan skin and freckles on her nose.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble

EXCERPT:

He cried out, and jerked away from her outstretched hand, falling to the floor, cracking his head on the corner of the island. He went still.

“Well, damn,” she muttered, closing the door.

A puddle had formed where he’d been standing. Much to her relief, a glance down confirmed water, not blood, covered the floor. Barefoot, she stepped gingerly on the well-polished tiles.

Shannon squatted next to him, picking up his wrist and checking for a pulse. His eyes were closed, but his lips were moving. Unable to hear what he was saying, she leaned in, her nose crinkling with distaste as she got closer. Such a heavy costume in the hot weather required far more deodorant. Holding her breath, she put her ear near his mouth.

“I am cursed…”

Straightening, she pursed her lips. The whole situation was bizarre enough to be intriguing. She was curious about this strange man. What was his story? An actual interest in another was a bit foreign to her. A sign, no doubt, she was already becoming a better person.

Okay, but what did she do now? If she called the police, first, they would send someone to her house. It might be the same hot officer who had come a couple of months ago, and after assuring her no bobcat lurked in her backyard, had left a few hours later with more than a grateful “thank you.”

He’d come back once or twice, to play Criminal & Lady Cop, but she’d soon tired of him. Officer CuffMe was the last person she wanted to see when she had an unknown young man passed out in her kitchen. Awkward and uncomfortable at best, of questionable legality at worst.

Second, it would be straight to the psych ward if the police got involved. Probably the right call, but if he were whisked away, she’d never learn his story. Making up her mind, she strode decisively to the liquor cabinet. Bryce had kept an extensive, and expensive bar.

“Brandy, brandy, brandy,” she chanted as she skimmed the labels. She smiled as she wrapped her fingers around the neck of a bottle. She’d read enough romances with bare-chested sea captains on the cover to know when the heroine fainted dead away, the thing to revive her was a bit of eau-de-vie. Singing a Spanish song about brandy she opened her crystal cupboard.

How much?

The lines never said anything like, “He poured four ounces of cognac into an eight ounce snifter and lifted it to her trembling lips.” It couldn’t be much. The unfortunate lass was usually “spluttering and gagging at the first taste of the amber fluid.”

Settling next to the stranger on the floor, she assumed the Lotus position. He had stopped mumbling, but was still quite pale. She set the glass down, then shifted to her best approximation of “cradling his head in her lap,” and wondered how the mechanics of this worked.

She decided to check his pockets before reviving him. If she found his license, the mystery would be solved. His apparel was odd, she wasn’t sure where to look. A pat down revealed a muscular body but no phone or wallet in the expected places. There was a slight bulge over his chest. In the small pouch she pulled out, she found some old coins, and some paper which might be foreign currency, though she didn’t recognize it. There was also a large, intricate antique key. None of this was helpful. She slid the purse back into the concealed pocket.

Putting a hand on the back of his head, Shannon, surprised by the weight, carefully lifted it and angled him, as best she could, into a drinking posture. Then, she brought the glass to his mouth—

a very sensuous mouth—

and poured the tiniest bit of alcohol over his lips. She laughed when he actually spluttered.

His head jerked, and his eyes flew open. Shannon drew back her hand, brandy splashing over the rim. She dropped his head, which unfortunately did not land back in her lap, but thumped heavily to the floor. A grimace of pain crossed his face, and she felt a tinge of guilt.

He fixed her with a baleful stare.

“What do you want of me?” he asked.

Daemon Blood by Mary Maddox Blog Tour and Giveaway!

Daemon Blood
Mary Maddox
(Daemon World, #3)
Publication date: March 8th 2022
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Horror

Our war will not unfold in your imaginary heaven. We will fight on Earth with human beings as pawns and weapons.

Lu Darlington is a seer, bound to the daemon Talion through ritual and blood. It’s not a role she enjoys, but she has little choice: daemons take what they want and destroy whoever stands in their way.

So Lu’s surprised when Talion doesn’t punish her for her newfound ability to keep him from possessing her whenever he likes. In fact he’s pleased. The stronger she is, he explains, the more powerful he becomes.

And he needs that power, because a war is brewing in the daemon world, a war that will be fought by—and through—humans.

Lu’s friend Lisa Duncan can’t see daemons but she’s seen what they can do and so has stayed far away from Lu for years. After a bizarre attack on Lisa leaves half a dozen people dead and she learns it’s just the first skirmish in the daemon war, Lisa realizes the safest place to be is with Lu.

Then Talion sends Lu away to teach her skills to another seer and Lisa must stay behind to look after Lu’s son Solly, conceived through a daemon ceremony with Talion. At four years old Solly’s seer abilities are already so strong Lisa is sometimes more afraid of Solly than for him.

As Talion’s enemies grow bolder, Lisa and Lu face attacks from every direction. There seems little hope any of them will survive—until Talion and his allies devise a plan.

The only problem is how much it will cost.

“With Daemon Blood, Mary Maddox has crafted a timeless tale of good against evil. With compelling characters and a keen sense of the darkness that lurks within us all, Daemon Blood will stay with you long after you turn the final thrilling page.”

Excerpt

One day, Montez brought a pair of Bluetooth headphones to class. I was sitting cross-legged on a pillow. Kneeling in front of me, he slipped the headphones onto my head. He took his phone from his hip pocket and opened an app, then pressed a button on the headphones. A cold electronic voice in the earpieces said, “Connected.”

“Just listen,” he said. “Don’t try to push your mind in one direction or another.”

“I never do. Push my mind, I mean.”

“Do you always go to the same place? That lake?”

“Uh-huh.”

“This might get you out of your rut.”

I didn’t think of the lake as a rut, but I nodded. He was the teacher.

He touched the screen and sounds welled from the headphones—a bizarre mix of fluttering, pulsing, and screeching that some people might call music. I spent a few minutes trying to adjust to the soundtrack, not sure I could stand the weirdness through an entire session. The music rooted in my mind like an invasive plant and began shooting out tendrils that also put down roots. A fear close to panic seized me, that the music would crowd out every thought, every emotion, and I would become nothing but the soil where it grew.

“Relax.” Montez’s voice reached me through the tangle of sound. “Unclench your jaw. Lower your shoulders; let them hang. Not forward, straight down.” His hands eased my shoulders into the correct position. “Now breathe.”

I began to accept the music. A heavy peace settled over me—surrender, I guess you could call it—and I became aware of my heartbeat. Its rhythm echoed the pulses from the headphones, and I merged with the music. Beautiful now. I wanted it to go on forever. My thoughts dissolved into blackness, and I felt a sensation of traveling over great distance. My mouth went dry, but the word water couldn’t take shape in my mind, so I couldn’t ask for any.

The music morphed into a soft roar. Mild warmth touched my face. I breathed in a fishy odor, different from that of the lake. No mud. Instead, a new kind of dankness and—what? Salt? The blackness faded to a pearly luminescence and resolved into a place I’d never seen before.

The roar came from an ocean. I was standing on a pier, gazing past the rolling waves at ships silhouetted against the bright horizon. Not romantic ships with sails and streamlined hulls, but huge freighters or warships that reminded me of insects. Judging by the angle of the sun on my face, it was late morning or early afternoon. A plover perched on a rail, its alien black eyes watchful, its gray and white feathers ruffling in the breeze. With a sharp cry, the bird launched itself into the hazy blue sky. The warmth, the openness, and the undulation and steady roar of the ocean almost overwhelmed me. I turned and began walking.

The whole length of the pier stretched in front of me. Three squat towers were built at intervals along one side. People strolled or leaned on the rails and gazed out to sea. Children scampered ahead of their mothers, waving their arms and startling birds into flight. Men sat fishing at the edge of the pier, plastic pails at their sides.

I knew the pier existed somewhere in the physical world. My mind, supercharged by the music, had somehow projected me there.

I walked by two women who stood talking. One of them, dark-haired and dressed in a gauzy red blouse over leggings, twisted around to glance at me and then turned back to her friend.

She sees me.

The realization shocked me. It might have jarred me from my trance, but the weird fluttering music held me in place.

The pier ended at a beach. People bobbed among the waves or sunbathed on the white sand. Beyond the beach, houses and apartments were built close together, their balconies lush with potted plants and flowers, their windows gleaming in the afternoon light.

A woman came toward me on the pier. She wore a long dress slit almost to her hip. She fixed her gaze on me, her hazel eyes glowing beneath smoky eye makeup. Her shoulder-length platinum hair was streaked with purple. A snake tattoo crawled down her left arm, flicking a red forked tongue. Its green tail disappeared up the sleeve of her T-shirt, reappeared above the deep scoop of the neckline, and tapered to an end between the knobs of her collarbone. An intricate design of flames and pentacles decorated her right arm. My nostrils tingled from her perfume, fruity and heavy with spice. “I know who you are.” Her growly voice sounded fake, part of her goth persona. “I’ve been waiting for you.”

Synopsis:

Murder at the CDC by Jon Land

2017: A military transport on a secret run to dispose of its deadly contents vanishes without a trace.

The present: A mass shooting on the steps of the Capitol nearly claims the life of Robert Brixton’s grandson.

No stranger to high-stakes investigations, Brixton embarks on a trail to uncover the motive behind the shooting. On the way he finds himself probing the attempted murder of the daughter his best friend, who works at the Washington offices of the CDC. The connection between the mass shooting and Alexandra’s poisoning lies in that long-lost military transport that has been recovered by forces determined to change America forever. Those forces are led by radical separatist leader Deacon Frank Wilhyte, whose goal is nothing short of bringing on a second Civil War. Brixton joins forces with Kelly Lofton, a former Baltimore homicide detective. She has her own reasons for wanting to find the truth behind the shooting on the Capitol steps and is the only person with the direct knowledge Brixton needs. But chasing the truth places them in the crosshairs of both Wilhyte’s legions and his Washington enablers.

PROLOGUE

December, 2016

The tanker lumbered through the night, headlights cutting a thin swath out of the storm raging around it.

“I can’t raise them, sir,” said Corporal Larry Kleinhurst, walkie-talkie still pressed tight against his ear.

“Try again,” Captain Frank Hall said from the wheel.

“Red Dog Two, this is Red Dog One, do you read me? Repeat, do you read me?”

No voice greeted him in response.

Kleinhurst pressed the walkie-talkie tighter. “Red Dog Three, this is Red Dog One, do you read me? Repeat, do you read me?”

Nothing again.

Kleinhurst lowered the walkie-talkie, as if to inspect it. “What’s the range on these things?”

“Couple miles, maybe a little less in this slop.”

“How’d we lose both our lead and follow teams?”

Hall remained silent in the driver’s seat, squeezing the steering wheel tighter. Procedure dictated that they rotate the driving duties in two-hour shifts, this one being the last before they reached their destination.

“We must be off the route, must have followed the wrong turn-off,” Kleinhurst said, squinting into the black void around them.

Hall snapped a look the corporal’s way. “Or the security teams did,” he said defensively.

“Both of them?” And when Hall failed to respond, he continued, “Unless somebody took them out.”

“Give it a rest, Corporal.”

“We could be headed straight for an ambush.”

“Or I fucked up and took the wrong turn-off. That’s what you’re saying.”

“I’m saying we could be lost, sir,” Kleinhurst told him, leaving it there.

He strained to see through the big truck’s windshield. They had left the Tooele Army Depot in Tooele County, Utah right on schedule at four o’clock pm for the twelve-hour journey to Umatilla, Oregon which housed the Umatilla Chemical Depot, destination of whatever they were hauling in the tanker. The actual final resting place of those contents, Kleinhurst knew, was actually the Umatilla Chemical Agent Disposal Facility located on the depot’s grounds, about which rumors ran rampant. He’d never spoken to anyone who’d actually seen its inner workings, but the tales of what had already been disposed of there was enough to make his skin crawl, weapons that could wipe out the world’s population several times over.

Which told Kleinhurst all he needed to know about whatever it was they were hauling, now without any security escort.

“We’re following the map, Corporal,” Hall said from behind the wheel, as if needing to explain himself further, a nervous edge creeping into his voice.

He kept playing with the lights in search of a beam level that could better reveal what lay ahead. But the storm gave little back, continuing to intensify the further they drew into the night. Mapping out a route the old-fashioned way might have been primitive by today’s standards, but procedure dictated they avoid the likes of Waze and Google Maps out of fear anything web-based could be hacked to the point where they might be rerouted to where potential hijackers were lying in wait.

Another thump atop the ragged, unpaved road shook Hall and Kleinhurst in their seats. They had barely settled back down when a heftier jolt jarred the rig mightily to the left. Hall managed to right it with a hard twist of the wheel that squeezed the blood from his hands.

“Captain . . .”

“This is the route they gave us, Corporal.”

Kleinhurst laid the map between them. “Not if I’m reading this right. With all due respect, sir, I believe we should turn back.”

Hall cast him a condescending stare. “This your first Red Dog run, son?”

“Yes, sir, it is.”

“When you’re hauling a shipment like what we got, you don’t turn back, no matter what. When they call us, it’s because they never want to see whatever we’re carrying again.”

With good reason, Kleinhurst thought. Among the initial chemicals stored at Umatilla, and the first to be destroyed at the chemical agent disposal facility housed there, were containers of GB and VX nerve agents, along with HD blister agent. The Tooele Army Depot, where their drive had originated, meanwhile, served as a storage site for war reserve and training munitions, supposedly devoted to conventional ordnance. In point of fact, the military also stored nonconventional munitions there in secret, a kind of way station for chemical weapons deemed too dangerous to store anywhere else.

The normal route from Tooele to Umatilla would have taken just over ten hours via I-84 west. But a Red Dog run required a different route entirely off the main roads in order to avoid population centers. The point was to steer clear of anywhere people resided to avoid the kind of attention an accident or spill would have otherwise caused, necessitating a much more winding route Hall and Kleinhurst hadn’t been given until moments prior to their departure. A helicopter had accompanied them through the first stages of the drive, chased away when a mountain storm the forecasts had made no mention of whipped up out of nowhere and caught the convoy in its grasp. Now two-thirds of that convoy had dropped off the map, leaving the tanker alone, unsecured, and exposed, deadly contents and all.

Kleinhurst’s mouth was so dry, he could barely swallow. “What exactly are we carrying, sir?”

Hall smirked. “If I knew the answer to that, I wouldn’t be driving this rig.”

Kleinhurst’s eyes darted to the radio. “What about calling in?”

“We’re past the point of no return. That means radio silence, soldier. They don’t hear a peep from us until we get where we’re going.”

Kleinhurst watched the rig’s wipers slap at the pelting rain collecting on the windshield, only to have a fresh layer form the instant they had completed their sweep. “Even in an emergency? Even if we lost our escorts miles back in this slop?”

“Let me give it to you straight,” Hall snapped, a sharper edge entering his voice. “The stuff we’re hauling in this tanker doesn’t exist. That means we don’t exist. That means we talk to nobody. Got it?”

“Yes, sir,” Kleinhurst sighed.

“Good,” said Hall. “We get where we’re supposed to go and figure things out from there. But right now . . .” His voice drifted, as he stole a glance at the map.

Suddenly Kleinhurst lurched forward, straining the bonds of his shoulder harness to peer through the windshield. “Jesus Christ, up there straight ahead!”

“What?”

“Look!”

“At what?”

“Can’t you see it?”

“I can’t see shit through this muck, Corporal.”

“Slow down.”

Hall stubbornly held to his speed.

“Slow down, for God’s sake. Can’t you see it?”

“I can’t see a thing!”

“That’s it, like the world before us is gone. You need to stop!”

Hall hit the brakes and the rig’s tires locked up, sending the tanker into a vicious skid across the road. He tried to work the steering wheel, but it fought him every inch of the way, turning the skid into a spin through an empty wave of darkness.

“There!” Kleinhurst screamed.

“What in God’s name,” Hall rasped, still fighting to steer when a mouth opened out of the storm like a vast maw.

He desperately worked the brake and the clutch, trying to regain control. He’d been out in hurricanes, tornados, even earthquakes. None of those, though, compared to the sense of airlessness both he and Kleinhurst felt around them, almost as if they were floating over a massive vacuum that was sucking them downward. He’d done his share of parachute jumps for his airborne training and the sensation was eerily akin to those first few moments in freefall before the chute deployed. He remembered the sense of not so much being unable to breathe, as being trapped between breaths for an absurdly long moment.

The rig’s nose pitched downward, everything in the cab sent rattling. The dashboard lights flickered and died, the world beyond lost to darkness as the tanker dropped into oblivion.

And then there was nothing.

CHAPTER 1

“The hand of God is upon You! He is my shepherd and I shall not want!”

Those were the last words high school sophomore Ben McDonald heard before the shooting started. He and the other students clustered around him from the Gilman School in Maryland were on a school field trip to the Capitol Building from their Baltimore prep school, the first such trip taken since academic life returned to a degree of normalcy following the endless coronavirus nightmare. Everyone had shown up in their school uniforms, the buses had left on schedule, and the students felt like pioneers, explorers blazing a trail back into the world beyond shutdowns and social distancing.

The reduction in Capitol tour group size was still in force and had necessitated the two bus-loads of students to be divided into five groups of fifteen, give or take, three chaperones allotted to each. Ben and his twin brother Robbie’s group had gone first and they had found themselves lingering on the Capitol steps, taking pictures and chatting away with their local congressman and senator who’d come out to greet and mingle with the students on the steps at the building’s east front.

“Why are you still wearing a mask?” one of them had asked the congressman, but Ben had already forgotten the answer.

He remembered checking the time on his phone just before he heard the first shots. Ben thought they were firecrackers at first, realizing the truth a breath later when the screams began and bodies started flying.

“I am doing the Lord’s work! I am a sacrifice to his word!”

Somehow Ben gleaned those words through the screams and incessant hail of fire. The shots were coming so fast he wasn’t sure if the shooter was firing on semi or full auto. The boy never actually saw him as more than a shape amid the blur before him, enveloping his vision like a dull haze. The thin sheer curtain drawn over his eyes didn’t keep him from recording bodies crumpling, keeling over, tumbling down the steps. The force of a bullet’s momentum slammed a classmate into him, sparing Ben the ensuing fusillade that turned the other boy’s back into a pin cushion.

My brother!

The panic and shock of those initial seconds had stolen thought of Robbie from him. He wheeled about, covered in the blood of boy who had dropped off the scene.

“Robbie!”

Did he cry out his name or only think it? The steps around him looked blanketed in khaki and blue, pants and blazers that made up his Gilman uniform. The sound of gunfire continued to resound in his ears, but he wasn’t sure the shooter was still firing because no more bodies seemed to be falling. People were running in all directions, crying and screaming, Ben remaining frozen out of fear for his brother.

“Robbie!”

He saw his brother’s sandy blond hair draped down from one of the marble steps onto another. Nothing else at first, just the hair. Maybe he had dove atop a friend who’d been wounded to spare that kid more fire—that was Robbie. But there was no one beneath Him, and . . . And . . .

He wasn’t moving, his arms stretched to the sides on angles that looked all wrong. Ben dropped to his knees next to Robbie, his pants sinking into pooling patches of blood which merged and thickened beneath him. He felt something pinching him along right side of his ribcage and saw his blue shirt darkening with a spreading wave of red in the last moment before he collapsed next to his brother.

 Review

Murder at the CDC, a Capitol Crimes novel, written by Jon Land is a spectacular book. I had never read one of Margaret Truman's books. This one is the second one penned by Jon Land.

Five years previous, a tanker carrying a deadly bioweapon called the “White Death" disappears, enter Dr. Efrem Lutayne who knows what the White Death is and how it could be used to kill millions of people if it falls into the wrong hands. We have another character, Senator Byron Birch who meets with Dr. Lutayne regarding the tanker. This is a world of militants and extremists who have found out about the White Death and want to use it for their own reasons.

There was a poisoning at a Baltimore High School, no one knows why seven students were killed and who had done it. Then there is a shooting on the Capitol stairs that leaves many dead and wounded. Among those at the shooting is our protagonist's, Robert Brixton's grandson who saves a friend of his. He thinks that he saw a second shooter. Brixton ends up investigating the shooting, along with his friend Mac. Mac had asked Brixton to meet with his newfound daughter Alexandra. She works at the CDC and thinks she is in trouble; she might know too much about something; this she confides to Brixton. Before he can do an investigation into what Alexandra is worried about, she ends up in the hospital, poisoned.

There is a parallel storyline, one of Kelly Loftus, an employee of the Capital Police, who coming off her shift, was witness to the shooting on the Capital steps. She came upon a woman on a park bench who she questioned, the woman was incoherent and all she kept saying was that "I know who did it". Kelly was interrupted by a crowd, and she asked the woman to stay put she would be right back. The woman did not stay but her purse must have opened, and she left a trail, like breadcrumbs, of the contents in her purse. Kelly retrieves the items, but instead of turning them into the FBI, she keeps them and wants to investigate what the clues mean.

The three of them, Brixton, Mac and Kelly work together to find out who the shooter was and why? So why were these kids shot at, why was Alexandra poisoned? Kelly is apprehended and questioned by the FBI. A good friend of hers, or so she thought, turned her into the FBI as the information she had was too important.

Enter Deacon Frank Wilhyte an extremely rich man but mean man who can't seem to get out from his dead father thumb, he seems to treat his own son like he was treated by his father. Kelly and Brixton trace the poisonings and shootings right to the Deacon's doorstep.

This is a story that takes place before the January 6th, 2021, but the workings behind the shooting in the book are reminiscent of that event, scarily so. Political greed, scary individuals bent on power and not caring about anything but their own means. A novel that moves right along, a real page turner. I knew that this book would be a thriller of the best kind as I read a few of Jon Land's Caitlin Strong series and love them. You need to start this series with whatever book you want, there are so many. If you want a recap on some principal characters, you can go back in the series, otherwise Murder at the CDC can be read as a standalone.

Loved it, I give it 4 stars. I received a copy for review purposes only.

“What do you think about dinner again next weekend?” Alex’s words brought me out of my mind and I quickly processed what he was saying. “You want to go out again?” I couldn’t keep the surprise out of my voice. He slanted a look my way, then quickly looked back at the road before grinning. “Yeah, I want to go out again. I had a lot of fun and don’t want to stop.” A large smile spread across my face. Oh my, God! I wanted to squeal and do a dance at him asking me out again. But considering I was sitting next to him in the front seat of his car, I’d have to wait.

We were just passing the “Welcome to Evergreen Ridge” sign when I asked, “Has your dog run away from you anymore?” Alex chuckled, and I grinned. “Nah, he hasn’t seen any other women he wants to accost on the ice. We’ll have to plan a day for you to go out so we can make it happen.” I laughed. “I’m sure I can find time in my schedule.”

My phone buzzed in my jacket pocket, reminding me of the email I had sitting in my inbox that I needed to deal with. I stiffened at the reminder. “Here we are,” Alex said, pulling into my driveway. “You stay there.” I grinned as I watched him lever out of the car and jog around to my side, pulling the door open. I smiled as I accepted his hand, gasping when he threaded his fingers through mine and walked me to my door. My face heated as we climbed the steps.

Love You Right by Julia Kent Cover Reveal! @jkentauthor

Love You Right
Julia Kent
(Love You, Maine, #1)
Publication date: April 26th 2022
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary, Romance

A missed opportunity five years ago makes for an unexpected encounter now between two people meant for each other – but who square off in a very public battle of wills in the small town of Love You, Maine, where every day is Valentine’s Day. Can love conquer all in a town steeped in it?

Kell Luview refuses to be a sucker at love again. Five years ago, he left D.C. with his tail between his legs and his heart broken. Fiercely protective of his small town in rural Maine, he’s determined to save the family tree business and avoid his feelings at all costs, no matter how much he longs to solve the mystery of what happened in D.C.

L.A. native Rachel Hart hates being underestimated almost as much as she hates this small town. She has two goals on this trip: get out of the cheesy tourist trap of Love You, Maine with a completed business deal, and avoid running into Kell, her old friend from D.C. who never became an old flame because of a huge misunderstanding.

One that still aches.

When her rental car breaks down on a logging road and Kell comes to her rescue, it’s clear he’s a changed man – and not for the good. Grumpy and reserved, he pushes all her buttons, still stubbornly convinced she betrayed him all those years ago. He’s never forgiven her, and she’s never forgiven herself for carrying a torch for him.

An embarrassing incident gets the town gossip mill going when residents wrongly assume Kell and Rachel are the newest couple to find love in the most romantic place on Earth. But the townsfolk aren’t wrong for long…

As Rachel breaks through his defenses and charms the town, he faces his biggest fear: all those pesky feelings he’s been avoiding.

Because they’re all about Rachel now.

And maybe they always were.

Can Kell and Rachel fight their growing attraction in the one place in the world where you can’t avoid love?

If you’re looking for a fun read about enemies to lovers, forced proximity, heroines who get their comeuppance and sworn bachelors felled by unexpected true love, featuring a hot bearded lumberjack impervious to poison ivy, and a city-slicker, jaded career woman with a penchant for great coffee, set in a small town in New England – then this is your book.

Grab a cup of (properly good) coffee, a can of hot cocoa mix, a jar of Fluff and maybe some calamine lotion (just in case), and get your happymeter ready as you read the very first book in New York Times bestselling romantic comedy author Julia Kent’s Love You, Maine series – where love isn’t just a feeling – it’s a way of life.
