ABOUT THE BOOK:

In this poignant capstone to The Barabbas Trilogy, the man called Barabbas—infamous former thief, murderer and prisoner turned Christian—and his wife Chanah continue their mission of spreading the gospel across the known world as cauldrons of political and military chaos boil across the Roman Empire.

Nero is increasingly erratic, and it’s only a matter of time before the sharp knives of imperial politics finish him off. Various successors vie for position. Who will strike first, and who will come out on top?

Meanwhile, the rebellion in Judea has intensified, the Jewish zealots exerting great influence over the minds of the people. General Vespasian and his son Titus aim to put a permanent end to the insurrection. How many lives will ultimately be sacrificed on the great altar of Jerusalem? Can the Jewish nation survive the fulfillment of Jesus’s prophecy? What will become of the Jewish Christians and the apostles and sisters who lead them? And where will Barabbas and his family find lasting peace?

The Barabbas Legacy once again brings the early years of the church into vivid detail, concluding the journey of those first saints who sacrificed everything to bring Christ’s message to the world.

Read an Excerpt!

Emperor Nero sat in the first chair to his right, furthest from the audience. Manius had reported on a recent visit that Nero was becoming more paranoid by the day—not just of the people, but of the senators, the Praetorian Guard, his generals, and most of the Roman nobility. Cornelius pitied him sometimes. Thrust into the role of emperor at sixteen by his mother’s murderous machinations, he had probably never coveted the position. What right-minded man would? The knives were always out. Always.

Many of those knives were aimed at Cornelius now. He sighed deeply, just as Nero left his chair and took a position a few feet in front of Cornelius, facing the audience. It was commonly known that a younger Nero had aspired to be a thespian and perform on stage, especially in such a grand theater as the Marcellus. That innocent youth had likely never envisioned this scenario.

“Fellow Romans,” he began in a rich, dramatic baritone. He was nearly thirty, no longer young. He had married at least twice, and one of his wives was dead. So was his mother, on his orders. The apostle Paul had connected with a piece of Nero’s soul, but Paul was not here. Nor was Peter, who had sacrificed himself for the Church. Nor was Barabbas, as far as Cornelius could tell. If he had arrived, he would have announced himself immediately at the home where Cornelius had been loosely confined.

“We have proven our mettle through fire and rebirth. Rome is strong, and will become greater still. But to do so, we must have order. We must have loyalty. We must all do our duty to the empire.”

It had the beginnings of a fine political speech. Nero’s oratory skills probably comprised a large part of the reason he still lived.

“This man”—he twisted to his left and gestured elaborately toward Cornelius—“was once a decorated, highly respected centurion, a man of resolve and action, a soldier true to the laws of Rome and her people.” As he squared himself again to the crowd, he spread both arms wide. “Now he favors strange gods above Rome, above her emperor, and above her true gods. He has helped Paul of Tarsus escape justice, and he has sought to weaken the influence of Rome across the world.”

Nero offered no facts to support his last claim, but because Cornelius had publicly admitted to helping Paul escape—and also because Nero was emperor—nobody would challenge the assertion.

“The question,” continued Nero, “isn’t whether Cornelius of the Italian band has betrayed Rome, but to what extent, and what his punishment should be. I will withhold that judgment until we have heard a few words in his defense.”

Cornelius watched in mild surprise as Senator Aviola rose from the front row and ascended the stage. Nero returned to his seat. Cornelius had expected someone else to be assigned to his defense—someone who couldn’t truly represent him, and wouldn’t care to. One of the occupants of the other nine chairs, none of which held him in any regard. Having Manius speak would be a boon … unless they had somehow gotten to him. A steely knot of dread formed in the pit of his stomach.

Senator Aviola didn’t look at Cornelius as he took his place and faced the people. The knot tightened and grew cold.

“Wise Roman citizens,” he began, “I am not here to spin fanciful tales, or to rob justice of her full due.” Cornelius nearly groaned aloud. “I will speak truth to you, in honor of all that is good and noble in your hearts and minds.”

He paused a moment, gripping the front of his rich, senatorial robes, trimmed in purple and red. He could be almost as dramatic as Nero, which had served him well, too.

PRAISE FOR THE BARABBAS TRILOGY:

“From the moment I started reading [The Barabbas Trilogy], I was drawn into early church history. The world and the people came alive to me in amazing ways. Beautifully written, these stories stayed on my mind and heart long after I closed the books. Highly recommended!”

  • Tricia Goyer, bestselling author of 80 books, including From Dust and Ashes

“I appreciate the meticulous attention to historical detail, insights concerning political machinations within the Roman Senate, the connections a handful of Christian missionaries and leaders made, and the discipling of the next generation of believers by the aging original saints. If you love historical fiction, particularly that involving New Testament times, you will be brought closer to the lives of our ancestors in the faith through this entertaining and speculative story of Barabbas.”

  • Dave (Doc) Kirby, radio host, WTBF-AM/FM Alabama

“[The Barabbas Legacy] is a fitting ending to what has been a marvelous story.”

  • Lisa Henson, reviewer, Goodreads and Reedsy Discovery

The Barabbas Legacy concludes Barabbas’ tale that started with curiosity and grew into a complete series. M.D. House succeeds in telling the story of Barabbas, a rebel and

murderer turned strong follower of Jesus.

Seven Themes of The Barabbas Legacy

M.D. House

Why seven? Well, John talks about the seven ancient Christian churches in Revelation, and discussing seven themes is a better challenge than three or five. Hopefully, it’s more useful, too. It’s  certainly more fun.

  1. God always keeps his promises.

Even when we think he must surely have

forgotten about us (and with good reason,

we might convince ourselves), he never

abandons us or acts contrary to his word.

How many times does he have to prove

that for us to believe it? And how long

must we wander aimlessly trying to “find

ourselves” when our true identity is found

in him and his Son. Said C.S. Lewis in

Mere Christianity: “It is when I turn to

Christ, when I give myself up to His

Personality, that I first begin to have a real personality of my own.”

How profound is that? (Read pp. 225-227 of Mere Christianity for the fuller, brilliant message.)

God is involved in every aspect of our lives. He is not a “God of the margins,” filling in where the  “world” can’t satisfy us. He and his son make literally everything richer, fuller, and more  worthwhile, no matter how large or small. Our faith brings us closer to them, amplifying and multiplying the miracles … which will continue to increase at the same time Satan’s kingdom  grows more powerful and brazen in its persecution of the believers.

  1. Peace through the Holy Spirit can be constant. Christ gave a clear promise to his apostles and disciples, recorded in John 14, regarding the Comforter. Through eternal perspective developed  and enhanced by prayer, obedience, service, kindness, and searching the scriptures, his peace  abides, even when we naturally grieve because of the vicissitudes of life and the malevolence of  others.

The fallen nature of this mortal world spawns sharp suffering, often made far worse by the selfish  and unwise use of our precious agency. But suffering offers opportunities to give and receive  service, to learn to love as Christ loved us, to reach upward and partake of healing waters. Jesus voluntarily suffered and endured all things on our behalf, despising the shame of the true king being  mocked as a false, impotent imposter. He empathizes perfectly with us. (see Hebrews 12:1-2)

  1. War is truly horrific. It often brings out the worst in us, even when we’re not the ones doing  the actual fighting. It sometimes humbles us, too, but at what cost? There’s a reason most Vietnam  vets refuse to talk about their experiences on the front lines. That is true for many who fought in  other conflicts as well.

Lucifer revels in such physical and spiritual destruction, while

the heavens mourn. The best soldiers and military leaders are

those who pursue and defend noble objectives with the least

amount of death and suffering possible, and who constantly

seek the Lord’s guidance to draw that difficult line. Cornelius,

most likely, was such a man, which is why he plays such a prominent part in these stories.

In fact, as soldiers of the New Covenant, our mission isn’t to

seek and destroy the enemy, but to seek and save the enemy whenever and wherever we can. That would have been an interesting lesson for a decorated centurion to learn.

  1. When our body dies, our legacy lives on in the lives of  all those we’ve touched, for good or ill. Christ acknowledges our legacy as well, and will  ultimately judge us on it, perfectly, which is both comforting and a little concerning. Some worldly  legacies might survive for a time—sometimes a considerable amount of time—based on lies, but  ultimately, the truth will emerge and lay everything bare.

Christ himself said, “For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid,  that shall not be known and come abroad.” (Luke 8:17)

  1. While the world is on fire (as it was in AD 65-75), we still don’t know when Christ will  return. It might be tempting sometimes to ease up in our efforts to build the kingdom of God,  taking solace in the fact that the Savior will return “soon” and that we’re “safely” on the right side.

But then there’s that fascinating and eye-opening parable of the talents. What happened to the  person who hid the talent, ostensibly to keep it “safe?” Yikes. (see Matthew 25)

We are called to the work, to help the Lord save souls and relieve suffering, and to hasten his  coming. It is not time to relax, or to shrink from the very real fight for truth and righteousness.

  1. God governs in the affairs of men a lot more than we sometimes think He does. Benjamin  Franklin famously noted that during the U.S. Constitutional Convention almost 235 years ago. He also recognized that God can influence those holding the reins of power in a multitude of ways,  sometimes through the good examples of his people, and sometimes through their brave sacrifices.

God often utilizes the perceived “weak” things of the earth to confound and thrash the “mighty” and  “wise” ones. The apostle Paul, for example, was a surprising choice for a champion; Barabbas  would have been as well. Said Paul himself: “But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to  confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which  are mighty.” (1 Corinthians 1:27) Lucky for us!

The Lord utilizes the talents of all his saints, men and women, rich and poor, well-educated or not,  in amazingly powerful ways. Men and women counseling together and seeking the Spirit drove the  fantastic, unimaginable growth of the early Church following Christ’s resurrection. They were  builders and healers, not conquerors or destroyers. They boldly stood for truth and righteousness,  though such a stance often put them in grave danger. They weren’t perfect, but they provided us with a powerful example to follow.

  1. Patience is the hallmark and bulwark of Christians throughout the history of the world.  “God’s timing is designed to teach us how to trust.” I saw that phrase used in a meme posted on The  Chosen’s fan page on Facebook, and it rings so true. No wonder I have to wait so long sometimes. I  don’t trust him enough. Though I’m trying, I promise.

You’ve probably wondered why Abraham and Sarah had to wait so long to have a child, wondered again why God would ask him to sacrifice that miraculously-conceived son, the one through whom the great promises made to Abraham were supposed to be fulfilled! God was opening up Abraham’s mind to comprehend the full scope of his purpose with regard to his children, and Abraham rejoiced in that knowledge.

The more we can come to trust God, the more he can teach us. Our potential is unlimited, and there is no finer teacher anywhere in the universe (which is an incredibly big place).

EXCERPT:

“Please be home,” she half-pleaded, half-muttered.

She glanced behind her. Checking the shadows. Not that she needed to. Her best friend since forever lived in the posh part of Sacramento thanks to his innovative tech company and savvy business mind. The man always had been a geek to his core, and it had paid off. In millions.

She brushed at a stray tear rolling down her cheek with an impatient hand. Holding them in during the party had been an act of sheer valor, not wanting the kids to get a water-logged princess. Besides crying generally wasn’t her thing. But her business was everything to her. She loved what she did, and that woman…

“Come on Hunter.” She knocked again, a little more frantically.

Slipping her phone from her purse, she scrolled to the contact labeled “Lancelot”—a play on his last name—and the phone started ringing as she knocked again. If he didn’t answer, she’d leave.

“’Lo?” A sleepy voice came over the line with a grumble.

She blew out a breath in sharp relief. “Let me in.”

“Nat? Call me at a human hour.”

“I’m at your door.”

Pause. No doubt his mind taking a second to catch up to her words. “Of course you are.”

“It’s only eight o’clock,” she pointed out dryly. “On a Saturday night.”

And he should be surprised dammit. Natalie wasn’t a party girl by any stretch of the imagination—or at least not the adult kind. Her sister Lexie, on the other hand, could give Studio 54 in the seventies lessons on how to party. All in the name of research for her podcast on dating, she claimed. But 8pm was hardly party time anyway.

“I pulled an all nighter working on code a friend asked me to review. I only just fell asleep. Hunter grumbled as the sound of echoing footsteps on his wooden stairs filtered through the phone. Then a series of beeps—no doubt the alarm—followed by several clicks of locks. She hung up as he cracked the massive metal door open, paused, then swung it wider, his dark brown gaze taking in every inch of her.

“Let me in. Don’t you recognize a damsel in distress when you see one?”

“Sorry.” He hurriedly stepped back, closing and locking the door behind her. After an owlish blink, he tipped his head. “Your tiara’s crooked.”

She started to lift a hand to right it only to stop herself with a scowl. “Yours would be too, if you went through what I did tonight.”

Tonight definitely deserved a title. Party-gate? Abandoned-princess-gate? Never-trust-a-knight-to-show-up-when-he’s-needed-gate?

Thick eyebrows winged high, and was that a twitch to his lips? It disappeared as his gaze slid down her body again, then back up to land on her probably tear-and-mascara-streaked face, and a frown formed between his brows.

Natalie crossed her arms, trying to hold in body warmth, but that only served to plump her breasts over the top of her corset. They were practically to her chin, so she dropped her arms again.

“You didn’t bring a jacket?” he asked.

“I accidentally left the matching fur stole at the party I just finished,” she tossed over her shoulder. She might just never get it back. Facing that mom again was not high on her To Do list about now.

“You seriously have a matching fur stole?”

Hunter flipped on the hall light and Natalie blinked rapidly, but not at the harsher lighting. No, what was setting her retinas on fire was the sight of Hunter in a pair of low-slung black pajama pants and no shirt.

Holy hell, her BFF had muscles.

Her gaze was glued to the eight pack – yes eight – of muscles ridging his stomach. When the hell did he get those?

How long as it been since I’ve seen him without a shirt?

Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Kelly, a successful investment manager from Tel Aviv, is living it up. She is single, rich and happy to be with men just to scratch an itch. Embarking on a no strings attached relationship with the hot, much younger Slava feels like a great idea—and he’s totally up for it.

But, when Ilan asks her to stop seeing Slava, Kelly realizes that no-strings doesn’t mean it’s easy to let go. With her livelihood on the line and her love life a mess, can Kelly keep it together, or has she thrown one too many balls in the air?

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

Kelly couldn’t afford to waste more time. She booked a scooter from her app, changed into sneakers, and entered the elevator—just when Ilan ran squeezing in.

“I’ll reschedule my appointment,” he said. “Your boss needed to take care of something.” They stood close in the small elevator. Kelly breathed in his cologne, which smelled woody and spicy without being overbearing. It suited him.

He looked down at her sneakers and smiled slightly. Now that she wasn’t in heels, they were the same height.

“Let’s have coffee together, Kelly.” It wasn’t a question. “I have some time now.” He oozed confidence. He acted cocky, and his masculinity reminded Kelly that she hadn’t had a decent cock in quite a while.

Kelly looked into the serene brown-green eyes. He emitted quiet power without any conscious effort, and she fought his effect on her. “How did you know my name?”

He shrugged. “Have coffee with me”—she was treated to another charming smile— “or maybe something stronger. I’ll tell you everything.”

Kelly looked away and kept quiet. He unnerved her.

They reached the lobby. She walked faster and so he picked up his pace. They were already out in the street, Kelly reaching for her scooter, when he grabbed her elbow lightly. Kelly halted, turning, and Ilan let go of her arm. They locked stares, his cool eyes searching hers, their noses nearly touching. If she leaned a little forward, she could bite the juicy lower lip of his half-open mouth. She wondered what he would do if she did. His slight aroma of masculine sweat smelled of rosewood, and Kelly felt a desire to nuzzle against the dark chest hairs that were showing through the unbuttoned collar of his shirt.

His face was somewhat flushed, so maybe he liked her closeness too. He reached into the front pocket of his jeans, his arm almost touching her breast, and Kelly looked down and noticed a bulge, which she wanted to touch very badly. God, she needed to get herself a good fuck. Soon.

Ilan extracted a business card and handed it to her. She took it, careful not to brush his hand. It read “Ilan Ohayon, Private Investigator” in Hebrew and English. The card didn’t include a street address or a website address, just a mobile phone number.

“Please,” he said, somewhat hoarsely. Yep, he wasn’t indifferent to her. He cleared his throat. “Call me. It’s important.”

“Do you have a different card in the other pocket?” she asked. “You introduced yourself to my boss as a potential client.”

Ilan broke into a dazzling smile, one that showed white teeth and attractive wrinkles in his eyes.

“Clever girl,” he said, extracting a second business card.

Ilan Ohayon, CEO, SMA Business Solutions. This card specified a website, a landline number, a different mobile, and a street address.

“I’ll think about it.” She pocketed both cards before putting on her helmet, unlocking the scooter, and riding off. When she looked back once, Ilan hadn’t moved. His hands were deep in his pockets and he was watching her with an inscrutable expression.

“Just let me go home and forget this whole night ever happened!”

“I don’t want you to go,” Nathan said.

“And why not? You want to ask me for another favor?”

“No, I–”

“Because right now the only thing I want is–”

“I want you to stay, Tessa! And not because I want a favor.”

I swallowed because his voice wasn’t angry or demanding. It was panicked, almost desperate as if he needed me to understand.

“Why then?” I asked, more calmly.

He closed the small distance between us, the heat of his body grazing over mine. Flecks of gold ignited in his eyes, sending my blood pounding through my veins.

“I want you, Tessa.”

“Me?” I tried to keep some kind of distance in my voice, a kernel of disbelief. But it was hard when Nathan was looking like he wanted to devour me.

“I’ve wanted you from the first moment I laid eyes on you,” he breathed. “I think of you all day and night. I imagine what it would be like to kiss you, taste you. I get lost in those thoughts and I never want to leave. Wanting you…it’s consuming me.”

He was running his hands up my arms while he spoke, his fingers trailing heat in their wake. I couldn’t breathe hearing him talk like that, it was too much to hope that he felt so much for me.

“I…”

“Tell me you want me, too.”

I’d never heard Nathan plead before, and I had a feeling I was one of the few.

My eyes skated over his face, fingers following the trail of my gaze. He closed his eyes, savoring my touch.

“I want you,” I breathed. “Nathan–”

His lips captured mine in a kiss that seared my soul, spreading a fire under my skin that would devour me, and I didn’t care. My hands found their way into his hair as his arms crushed my body to his. My tongue plundered his mouth, waking the sleeping hunger deep inside. I needed him so badly that my entire body ached for more of his hands, his mouth.

Just as I was about to hook my leg over his hip and climb him like a fucking tree, Nathan broke off the kiss and tugged me toward the private elevator waiting for us.

As soon as we were inside, he backed me against the wall, hand fisting in my hair and mouth slamming onto mine. I tugged on the ends of his shirt and shoved my hands underneath. My fingers ran greedily over the hard planes of his stomach and chest. He felt so damn good, better than I had imagined, and now I wanted to know what that hard chest would feel like on top of me, pressing me into his mattress as he fucked me.

Nathan’s lips bit their way down my throat and I let loose a moan.

“I’ve never done this in an elevator before,” I breathed.

The grin he delivered shot heat straight to my groin.

“Next time I’ll bend you over and take you right here, but this time, I want you on my bed.”

“You have imagined this, haven’t you?”

“Oh Tessa, you have no idea.”

Night In His Eyes
Alisyn Fae & Emma Alisyn
(The Fae Prince of Everenne, #1)
Publication date: March 17th 2022
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Romance

A war of Fae Houses. A Prince waking from darkness. A woman drenched in his blood.

Prince Renaud, my mother’s killer, is waking. The Court has not felt the full weight of an Old One in centuries, and it’s my fault.

I am Aerinne Capulette, Lady of House Faronne, and I will have my vengeance against House Montague and Renaud. But despite the ground war I’ve led since I was a child, we remain locked in bloody stalemate.

If the Prince takes the field against us, he will rip from my mind the secret that will shred any hope for peace, or victory.

He will kill me if he discovers the truth. . .

. . .sweet, foolish child. Your death is not what I desire. I have not waited, watched, and planned for centuries to let something as petty as a halfling girl’s vengeance keep me from claiming what is mine.

To protect you, and to ensure my reign, I will bend you to my will. I will slake this obsession with your blood and tears, and I will yield you to no one.

Let your House protest. Let my Court look aghast. They are nothing.

And you—you are my anchor.

We may be enemies, but your hatred only seduces my darkness.

Night in His Eyes is an adult high heat, slow burn Fae fantasy romance, first in the Fae Prince of Everenne series. This not a standalone and ends in a cliffhanger.

For readers who crave enemies-to-lovers, obsessed dark heroes, murderous heroines and a battle of dark wills and enjoy authors such as Sylvia Mercedes, Sarah J. Maas, Kathryn Ann Kingsley, and Laura Thalassa.

EXCERPT:

“No.”

The Prince halted, and glanced up at the sky. “My amusement is diminishing. I had hoped to relearn the taste of wine tonight.”

“Sorry to keep you from your red.” I doubted he was a white kind of guy.

“It is not an apology I desire from you.”

What did he desire. . .other than the subjugation of Everenne’s Low Fae, and the Lords of the High and Low Courts kneeling beneath his boot?

I lifted my blades.

Renaud’s mouth thinned as he let me attack, eyes a flat grey. I refused to return to Faronne without every bone in my body broken from trying. I wouldn’t kneel at my mother’s grave and confess weakness.

Return victorious or on your shield.

A line of fire grazed my sword arm. I ignored the pain and my dark angel, sheathing my long dagger and shifting the sabre to my left hand so the dripping blood didn’t threaten my grip.

I panted, my breaths harsh and acid with the nausea of forcing myself to remain on my feet. The moon peeked over the horizon.

“Enough, Aerinne,” the Prince said, expression now concealed by the encroaching night. His eyes still glowed.

“Stop. . .saying my name like that.” I swayed.

“Like what?”

“Like you know me.”

“You cannot fathom what I know, girl. Now, sheathe your sword.” A bite in his voice. A hint of a leviathan in his depths.

“No—”

The back of his hand crashed against my face.

I crumpled to the ground. He’d pulled the blow at the last second, enough not to break me. But definitely sufficient to enforce the command to lay down my sabre.

I was staring up at the sky, dazed and unable to force my limbs to work, when a strong hand wrapped around my sword arm and yanked me to my feet.

“Tell me what you see,” Prince Renaud said.

I didn’t need to look around me to know. The white stone was awash with red, dark because of the night. And the Prince surveyed it coolly, unfazed and still at full strength. Killing him wouldn’t be easy.

“The result of several generations worth of blood feuds.” I matched his chill, pointed tone, channeling the hauteur my mother could don at the drop of a hat, the effect marred because my head ached, and my words came out slightly slurred.

Renaud shifted his grip, arm sliding around my back to hold me up as if shouldering my weight was the most natural thing in the world. “The result of our inability to change.”

He grabbed the sabre still clutched in my hand and tossed it aside. “Our enduring obstinacy and adherence to norms that almost caused our destruction once. I did not cross the realms and seize this city only for it to bite my hand. This—” his gaze traveled over the battle “—this was never your ambition. It was never even your mother’s.”

“Don’t speak of her.” Another twist of pain in my head. I grit my teeth through the pulse.

His arm tightened around me. “I knew Maryonne for far longer than you, girl. I’ll speak of her if I wish, and you will listen.”

Anger gave me a jet stream of strength. “I may be hot-headed, but you’re arrogant. You think you know our moves and will counter them all.” I pushed away from him and turned, one foot behind the other. “I won’t listen to you.”

If I had doubts before, I had none now. He would pay for my mother, for his casual claim of kinship to which he had no right. She was mine, grief was mine.

“And if you cared for my mother, as you imply, Danon would be free!” I screamed the last three words, self-control broken and tossed aside like trash. “I’ll leave this field when one of us is dead.”

Eyes narrowed and watchful, he didn’t move, the sword in his hand pointed down. “So you Vowed.”

Wind whipped my hair in my face, a sudden steep rise of the night breeze. “I will fulfill my Vow, and not only because I must.”

I took another step back, defiant, uncaring of his anger.

Paused.

And bared my teeth. For a fleeting moment, I accepted what I was.

Fae.

Bound by my anger, grounded in my vengeance.

I might fail, but I would fail victoriously, taking his blood and kin with me as I perished.

“Release the wyverns!”
