Wanda Duff is an unconventional New England clergywoman, addicted to chicken wings, high-octane ice cream, and saying yes to anyone in need of a prayer, even the folks her town might think don’t deserve one.

When parishioner Niels Pond dies unexpectedly at the Fair Havens assisted living facility, Wanda’s duty to minister to his family is beset by her suspicions about the circumstances of his abrupt passing. Wanda finds an unexpected co-detective in high school vice principal Prudence Rye, who fled town on graduation night a decade ago and returned only recently.

Rye puts her job on the line to investigate the mourning Ponds with the surprisingly edgy Wanda. As they expose difficult family truths and uncover a dangerous conspiracy operating out of Fair Havens, Rye and Wanda discover curiosity has an unanticipated cost.

Comfortably gossipy, with a fresh take on the characters and ethos cozy mystery fans will love, Maria Mankin and Maren C. Tirabassi’s Death at Fair Havens launches a series that celebrates intergenerational women’s friendship and the power of inclusion, curiosity, and love.

"Here’s small town life portrayed with humor and affection, peopled with quirky characters you’ll care about." —James Patrick Kelly, winner of the Hugo, Nebula and Locus awards

Vickie is done with men, even when NBA star Colt Chastain sets his sights on her. He’s everything she doesn’t want in her calm, quiet life. Colt’s about to make Vickie realize that sometimes what you want, isn’t what you need. Readers who enjoy sports romances will devour Takeoff by Evelyn Sola, a steamy, single dad romance.

Vickie

I am done with men.

I like my life the way it is. Calm, quiet and very private. I may be a brash New Yorker, but I keep a tight circle, and I prefer it that way.

Enter Colt Chastain, rising NBA star and magnetic single dad. He’s set his sights on me and he's determined to change my mind. No way that’s going to happen. Nope. Never. Did I mention he’s tenacious? And hot? Very, very hot.

I told him he’s the absolute last man I would ever be with. So, why does he think getting me into bed is a slam dunk?

I tried to resist. I really did. My efforts didn’t work, and now I’ve found myself falling head over heels for him. Did I say quiet and private? I’ll even accept the crazy public lifestyle.

Now, I can't picture my life without him and his adorable five-year-old son.

Colt

I live my life in the spotlight. Millions of fans, social media and press follow me everywhere. That’s not my preference. That comes with the job.

On the inside, I'm a regular southern gentleman who can't fight my attraction to the tempting New Yorker who's caught my eye.

Victoria Taylor is everything I ever wanted. She’s beautiful, sexy, confident and not afraid to put me in my place.  She says she doesn’t want me, but her eyes tell a different story. I'll stop at nothing to prove to her that we're really not that different after all.

She ignores that statement. “What you just did, I don’t find that cute or endearing. That’s the first thing.” She tilts her head up and points a finger in my face. I try hard to hold my laugh but fail. I recover quickly though and wipe the smile off my face, but the idea of this woman who barely reaches my chest trying to chastise me is the funniest thing that’s happened to me in a long time.
“Fascinatin’.” I do my best to pretend to be awed. “What’s the second thang?”
“The second thing is, you’re boring. Controlling wanna-be alpha males bore me. Goodbye.” She turns and walks away. I admire the curve of her ass and the swing of her hips before I catch up with her in two long strides. I walk past her, turn around, and block her path. She stops before she can collide with my chest.
“We didn’t finish our conversation.”
“I did.” She does a fake pout and purses her lips together. Then something changes in her eyes. She inches closer to me and bites that plump bottom lip. “On second thought, I want to ask you something.” She whispers the words and I feel a stirring in my pants. She gestures for me to lower down, and I do, putting my ear close to her lips. “Tell me something.” Her words come out husky.
“I’ll tell you anything you want to know, darlin’.”
Her small hands glide across my pecs, slowly massaging me over my shirt. I flex underneath her hand. She whimpers.
“Have you ever—” She stops herself and looks around, almost as if she’s too shy to ask.
“Have I ever what? You can ask me whatever you want.”
“Have you ever had a five-inch stiletto lodged in one of your testicles?” All shyness gone from her voice, she shoves me away, and I practically fall on my butt.
I run ahead of her and block her path, make a face and wince. “Can’t say that I have. I hope you’re not into that kind of thing. I mean, I don’t mind a little bit of pain, but—"
“Keep blocking me, and you’ll find out.”
I throw my head back and laugh while I try to imagine that. I’m positive I can lift her with one hand without exerting much energy. I’ll have my hand wrapped around her wrist before she can take her shoe off.
“The last woman who threatened me was my mama,” I tell her.
That statement doesn’t impress her either. She makes a face and turns away to walk in the other direction, but I grab one of her wrists. She twists and turns to get it away from me, but I put my free hand in my pocket and wait. I even whistle a tune while she tries and fails to pull away.

EXCERPT:

Laura

As I sit across from the four Kutsenko brothers, I press my lips together to keep from drooling. No four men should be so strikingly handsome. Not all from the same family, anyway. I fight a valiant battle against letting my gaze drift toward the eldest, Maksim, whose ice-blue eyes bore into me. After years of negotiating billion-dollar investment contracts while facing countless ruthless businessmen, I’ve learned to keep my expression studiously blank. But it’s a true struggle today. Instead, I focus my attention on the squirrelly lawyer sitting across the conference table. While he’s disingenuous with each comment, he’s a good negotiator. But I’m better. How cliché am I?

While I feel Maksim watching me, I focus on Dmitry Yakovitch as he continues to argue the merits of the venture capitalist company I represent, RK Capital Group, merging with Kutsenko Partners. What he means is the merits of Kutsenko Partners acquiring RK Capital Group, then stripping it and making it another money-laundering shell corporation. While most people in New York have little awareness of the Russian mafia, I do. The Kutsenko brothers’ names appear on no titles or deeds anywhere in New York City, but it wasn’t difficult to determine which shell companies likely belong to them. Their assumption that I’m unfamiliar with them is proving beneficial to me as they continue to whisper amongst themselves in Russian. I think they may even believe they’re convincing me that they don’t speak much English.

The senior partners of RK Capital Group know who I’m negotiating with, though they may not know I’m aware of these Russians’ more nefarious operations. They’ve given me the go-ahead to agree to a merger with an eventual acquisition, but only for the right price. A price to the tune of twenty billion dollars. Considering an investment firm like Goldman Sachs is worth nearly one-hundred-and-twenty billion dollars, my clients’ asking price appears reasonable.

“Mr. Yakovitch, I shall stop you now.” I raise my left hand, pen caught between my index and middle fingers. When I have his attention, I lean back in my chair and casually twirl the pen over my index finger and thumb. “Fifty billion is my clients’ asking price. You know that. Your clients know that. RK doesn’t oppose the merger. What they oppose is the insulting offer you’ve made. It’s nearly noon, and I’m hungry, Mr. Yakovitch. I have a delicious ham sandwich waiting for me. I even have three chocolate chip cookies waiting for me. If we aren’t going to make any progress, I shall let you go, so I can move onto my eagerly anticipated lunch.”

I cant my head just enough for me to appear as though my gaze rests solely on the opposing attorney’s face, but I can see each Kutsenko brothers’ reaction. My face battles yet again against showing my emotions as I fight not to smirk. Their muted but surprised expressions confirm what I already know.

“Please tell your clients to make a reasonable counteroffer, or I will conclude this meeting and enjoy my ham sandwich and cookies.”

Dmitry glares at me before turning to Maksim and his three brothers. In rapid Russian, he doesn’t interpret my suggestion. Oh no. There’s no need for that. I can’t catch every word because his voice is too low. But I catch something along the lines of “The bitch refuses to budge. What now? A f*cking ham sandwich. More like a stick up her *ss.”

Maksim swivels his chair to look at his brothers. In Russian, he says, “Fifty billion is ridiculous. She’s not so stupid or naïve not to know that. My guess is they’ll settle for twenty billion. We offer fifteen.”

“That’s barely better than what we already offered,” Aleksei, the second-oldest brother, argues. “She’ll be eating the f*cking sandwich and dipping her cookies in milk before we walk out the door. We need the buildings.”

“We offer twenty, Maks,” Bogdan, the youngest, insists.

As I watch the brothers discuss, their voices barely lowered, I pull my lunch sack from the black leather satchel by my feet and set it beside my laptop. It’s a ridiculously pink floral bag with an embroidered monogram, the L and D overlapping. It’s an empty prop, but they don’t know that. I watch as five sets of eyes narrow. I offer a smile that would appear innocent in any setting other than this meeting. It’s patronizing, and I know it.

To Kiss a Wallflower is the nineteenth book in the Timeless Regency Collection, a bestselling anthology series from Mirror Press. The book features three novellas from acclaimed historical romance authors whose stories reveal that eventually, all wallflowers will have their chance at love . . . This is where it begins.

“The Wallflower’s Dance,” by Jen Geigle Johnson

Lottie Hughes likes people, as long as they aren't too close. Does it bother her that no one asks her to dance? Yes, but she's not sure how to drum up dance partners when she has almost no dowry, no title, and freezes up when anyone tries to talk to her. When she suddenly inherits a huge amount and is the new center of attention all over London, her secret dreams might come true but also her worst nightmares. Suddenly everyone wants to talk to her. Men ask her to dance. And she is inundated with interested suitors. She fights to stay close to the few friends she knows are true. One man saw her before her life changed forever. But does she want to accept his help when he, too, might be insincere?

“Letters to a Wallflower,” by Heather B. Moore

Ellen might be beautiful and considered a diamond of the first water by Society, but she is so very tired of the pressure to marry a titled gentleman so that her beauty won’t go to waste. When her cousin Dinah dares Ellen to attend a ball with no frills and to stand with the wallflowers, Ellen takes on the dare. What’s in the wager for her? The prize cuttings of her aunt’s extraordinary roses. But what Ellen isn’t expecting is Lord Ravenshire to engage her in the most interesting conversation. When she confesses to him of her opposition in marrying for a title, he confesses his distaste of the London scene. They strike a bargain together, one which will either push them apart or lead to a future sweeter than either of them could have imagined.

“To Marry a Wallflower,” by Anneka R. Walker

Charlotte Winters is destined to spinsterhood until she turns down an unwanted proposal and everything changes. With gossip rampant, her father attempts to salvage her reputation by betrothing her to another. Soon she is sent off to her aunt’s to meet Lord Templeton, her intended. Anxiety-ridden, Charlotte begs her aunt to let her observe Lord Templeton from afar before their introduction. She never planned to pretend to be her fictional cousin to learn more about him, or to fall in love with Lord Templeton’s friend in the process. Lord Templeton dreads returning to the empty halls of Newcliff Manor. When his father’s old friend, Mr. Winters reaches out for assistance, Lord Templeton finds himself returning home engaged to a woman he has never met. Desperate to learn more about Miss Winters, he befriends her cousin. He wouldn’t have spoken to her, or lied about his identity, if he’d known the quiet woman would sneak into his heart.

To Marry a Wallflower

by Anneka R. Walker

Dedication

To the shy ones: may the right love make you brave.

Chapter 1

London, England, 1804

Luke had never intended to go to a gentleman’s club and leave with a note of betrothal. Perhaps he should have left for Banbury as soon as the session of parliament had ended, but the lonely, empty walls of Newcliff Manor did not entice him home. Instead, he met his friend and neighbor, Lord Crawford, at White’s for a drink. The club neared capacity, but they managed to secure a table in the back. Crawford had just begun to update Luke about his family, particularly his new wife, and his brother and sister, when a ruckus sounded near the door.

Crawford turned in his seat. “What is it now? A bet gone bad?”

Luke was nearly a head taller so it was easier for him to identify the source of the problem, and in doing so he recognized one of the men. “Some dandy is having a row with my father’s friend Mr. Winters.” He hadn’t seen Mr. Winters since Father’s funeral nearly four years ago. Guilt pricked his conscience. He should have sought the man sooner, if only to thank him. Mr. Winters had stayed with Luke the entirety of that dark night after his father’s death and held Luke while he cried like a baby. That humble, broken moment was seared in his memory, as was the selfless friendship Mr. Winters had offered him. After all this time, Luke had no excuse for not calling on him and paying his gratitude.

“The dandy is Mr. Parker III.” Crawford shook his head and his dark hair fell across his forehead. He swiped it to the side once more. “He might be well connected, but I question his membership here. If there was ever a hotheaded, obnoxious, ridiculous man, it is him. If you care for this Mr. Winters and want to rescue him before Mr. Parker verbally skewers him, I will gladly be your second.”

Luke had only been friends with Crawford for two years, ever since Luke bought a summerhouse in Banbury near the earl’s castle. They had become fast friends, and Luke had developed a great respect for Crawford’s wisdom and opinion. “I don’t know Mr. Winters as well as I ought to, but my father held him in high esteem. If this Mr. Parker is as bad as you say, then it is my duty to assist him.”

Luke had never been one to jump into a fray, but this was his chance to return the service Mr. Winters had paid him. He pulled himself to his feet and marched to the front of the room. Crawford was quick to follow. By the time they weaved around a few other tables and reached Mr. Winters’s side, two footmen were already escorting Mr. Parker from the room. Mr. Parker argued every step, but somehow the footmen managed to wrestle him away.

“What seems to be the problem?” Luke asked Mr. Winters.

Mr. Winters ran his hand over his nearly bald head and ruffled some of the black hair above his ears. “Lord Templeton, I am relieved to see you. You must help me.”

Luke’s title felt odd coming from Mr. Winters’s lips, as if no time at all had lapsed since his father’s death. A dozen pairs of eyes fell on them, and he pushed away the melancholy thoughts from his past. “Come sit down at our table, and we can talk more privately.” He motioned Mr. Winters to the back of the room. Soon they were seated again, with Mr. Winters across from Luke and Crawford.

“I’m at my wits’ end,” Mr. Winters said, collapsing back against his seat. “My daughter has refused Mr. Parker’s hand in marriage, and who could blame her? He is mean-spirited, and he would crush her delicate soul. No one ever prepares you for this part of being a father.” He took out his handkerchief from his waistcoat pocket and mopped up a few beads of sweat that were forming on his brow.

“I am sure things will blow over,” Luke assured him. Though he had no experience with this sort of thing, it felt like the right thing to say.
