Description

Nineteen-year-old hockey phenom Alexander Price is the youngest-ever captain in the NHL. With a polarizing social media presence and a predilection for dirty play, he typifies the stereotype of young, out-of-control athlete. But away from the cameras, Alex is a kid with an anxiety disorder and the expectations of an expansion franchise on his shoulders. And maybe he tries too hard to fit the part of asshole playboy, but it’s better than the alternative; in his line of work, gay is the punchline of an insult, not something he can be.

Eighteen-year-old vlogger Elijah Rodriguez is a freshman in college recovering from an injury that derailed his Olympic figure-skating dreams. Mixed-race, disabled, and out of the closet since he was fourteen, Eli is unapologetically himself. He has no qualms about voicing his disapproval of celebrity jocks who make homophobic jokes on Twitter and park their flashy cars in the handicapped spaces outside of ice rinks.

After an antagonistic introduction, Alex and Eli’s inexplicable friendship both baffles and charms the internet. But navigating relationships is hard enough for normal teenagers. It’s a lot harder when the world—much of it disapproving—is watching you fall in love with your best friend.

There are admittedly worse things in the world than having to walk two blocks on a Wednesday morning in July.

Eli knows from experience there are worse things in the world.

Like being diagnosed with epilepsy at sixteen.

Like having heat-induced seizures and living in Texas.

Objectively, he knows there are worse things, but right at this moment, he can’t think of many because it’s 6:00 a.m., and he isn’t allowed to have caffeine because they’ve changed his medication again, and he’s had to park in the visitor’s garage because the only two handicap spaces at the north entrance of the Houston Hell Hounds official practice facility had been occupied by one parallel-parked Land Rover decidedly lacking handicap tags.

“Motherfucking hockey players,” Eli says to the empty sidewalk.

So now he’s running late because it’d taken him an extra ten minutes to find the visitors’ lot, and he’d still needed to stop and let his dog pee before they entered the complex. Because being the disabled kid whose service dog pees in the rink on the first day of practice will guarantee he never has a collegiate social life to speak of. Not that he holds out particularly high hopes for that anyway.

The security guard at the door barely glances at his newly printed student ID before waving him to the left with a tired, “Rink Three, end of the hallway on your right.”

She looks like she could use some coffee too.

“Right. Thanks.” Eli shifts his backpack, sparing a last hateful glance at the Land Rover outside.

“Hey, do you happen to know whose car that is out front? License plate AP23?”

She lifts one eyebrow. “You mean Alexander Price?”

Because of course. Of course it was Alexander Price. Eli tries to avoid too much familiarity with the hockey world, but there are some things you just know if you spend enough time around ice, and one of those things is the name of the youngest current captain in the NHL, who is apparently just as much of a douche off the ice as tabloids would suggest.

Eli takes a steadying breath. “You know where I could find him?”

The security guard considers Eli’s expression, then the dog at his feet, then the ill-parked vehicle outside.

“I take it you don’t want an autograph?”

“No.”

She gives him an apologetic smile. “I don’t think I can have his car towed, but I can file a complaint if you’d like.”

“That would be great, thanks.”

He starts to move forward again before pausing. “Do you know if Jeff Cooper is back from IR?” he asks. He doesn’t make a habit of following hockey, but when he’s potentially in the same building as a gold-medal-winning, world-junior-figure-skater-turned-NHL-player, he’d like to know.

“Yeah. As of this week, he’s cleared to skate no-contact in practices.” She grins. “He also parks in the players’ lot like he’s supposed to.”

Eli would expect nothing less.

“They’re in practice for another hour and a half,” she adds. “But sometimes Cooper does the meet and greet afterward.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, Rink Two.” She nods to the right hallway. “Price will be there, too, but he almost never comes out afterward.”

“Shocking.”

The doors open behind him and an entirely too-awake girl wearing a hijab that matches her leggings waves at them both and hands over her student ID.

“Morning,” she says, careful not to run over Hawk’s tail with her rolling skate bag. “Your dog is beautiful.”

“Thanks,” Eli says. “Are you a freshman too?”

Which is a stupid question because he knows the rest of the figure skating team isn’t supposed to start practice for another week. Obviously, she’s there for freshman orientation just like he is.

“Yeah!” she says, apparently immune to his idiocy. “I’m Morgan. Just moved in last night. Thank god for coffee, right? I’m so nervous I didn’t sleep at all.”

“Right,” he agrees wryly. “I’m Eli.”

She gets her ID back from the security guard, and they start down the left hallway together.

“It’s so cool the Hell Hounds share their facilities with the university,” she says. “Did you know their practices are open to the public? I think I might go try to get an autograph or two later if we have time.”

“Yeah,” he says. “I might join you.”

Sandwiches in the Bean to Bar Mysteries: Cajun Reuben Sandwich

A Shot in the 80% Dark Bonus Recipe

I have discovered over the course of several books in my Bean to Bar Mysteries that my protagonist, Felicity, is fond of sandwiches.  It isn’t all she eats – obviously since she’s got a developed palate for chocolate making.  But sandwiches are laid-back, on-the-go foods which can still be delicious and support a variety of flavor profiles.  Felicity’s taste varies – from the diner club sandwich she eats leisurely in the first book, to the cruise ship roast beef sandwich she has standing up because sleuthing has caused her to miss a meal.  (The recipe for that one – including how to make the roast beef – is on the bonus page of my website. http://amberroyer.com/bean-to-bar-mysteries-bonus-recipes/
In Book 4, A Shot in the 80% Dark, Felicity winds up grabbing sandwiches with one of her love interests to bring to the other love interest, who is in the hospital getting checked for a concussion.  This is slightly less awkward than it sounds.  In the scene, Felicity reveals that one of her favorite sandwich is a local restaurant’s Cajun-style Reuben.  This makes sense for Felicity – who has a Cajun side to her family, and to the setting, Galveston Island, which has embraced Cajun culture in a number of restaurants.

You can either heat the corned beef wrapped in foil in the oven, or covered with a wet paper towel in the microwave.  The remoulade itself isn’t that spicy, so control the heat level in the sandwich with the amount of minced jalapeno you add.  (Omit them entirely if you don’t like spicy things.)  As written, the recipe has a bit of a kick.

Cajun Remoulade:

½ c. mayonnaise

1 Tbsp. spicy brown mustard

1 clove garlic, minced

1 tsp. paprika

1 tsp. Cajun seasoning

1 tsp. lemon juice

1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper

1 tsp. dried parsley

In a medium bowl, stir together mayonnaise, spicy brown mustard, garlic, paprika, Cajun seasoning, lemon juice, Worchester shire sauce and parsley. Adjust seasoning to taste.  Set aside.

Sandwiches:

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

4 slices marbled rye bread

1 Tbsp. jalapeno, minced

½ lb. deli sliced corned beef, warmed

1 c. sauerkraut, warmed and drained

4 slices Swiss cheese

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Brush one side of each slice of bread with butter. Heat a large cast iron skillet over medium heat and add bread, butter side down.  Toast about two minutes, or until the toasted side turns golden brown.  Place the slices of bread on a baking sheet, untoasted side up.

Spread Cajun remoulade generously on the untoasted side of each bread slice. Top two of the bread slices with the minced jalapeno. Layer those two slices with the corned beef and then the sauerkraut.  Place a Swiss cheese slice on top of the sauerkraut on each of those two slices.  Place the other two cheese slices on top of the other two remaining remoulade -coated bread slices.

Transfer the partially constructed sandwiches to the oven and cook until cheese is fully melted, about 3 minutes. Close sandwiches, making sure the cheese is hot enough to melt together.  Cut each sandwich in half and serve immediately.

Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

One accident.
Two men.
Almost three years of despair.
Four beating hearts growing in pain.
Five lives forever changed.

Everything fell apart in the blink of an eye.

These days my own misery keeps me company.

I never thought this would be me—a twenty-four-year-old—stuck in a dead-end relationship.

Gone are the thrilling adventures with Harvey Stark.
Gone is his smile.
Gone is the sight of his dimples and the sparkle in his bright blue eyes.

He’s changed into a hollow version of himself and I’m just a shadow following him around our home.

Then I meet my new boss at a firm in Downtown Chicago. Damon Dreygon challenges me in ways I never knew existed and makes me believe in myself again. Our souls match instantly, and meeting Damon feels like a step towards peace.

Except it’s not. Because everyone grieves differently.

So while one man can’t love me, the other refuses to touch me.

And I’m crawling through the crippling chaos, barely holding on . . .

EXCERPT:

“Come see your place.” Gia gives me a tight smile, holding up my keys. I want to crumble right there as I step out of the car. Drop to my knees on the concrete of the driveway despite my ripped jeans.

I want the world and everything in it to swallow me whole.

I can’t do this.

I don’t think I can do this.

I hear only the muffled words of my sister as I take in the front of the house. It’s filled with tiny trees and flowers, and I want to laugh because how will this help us?

The memories of my calls with Harvey hit me with a vengeance—I could almost hear him dying a painful death inside. According to Helen, Stefan said that Harv’s progress was slower than the others in his group.

And his happy, sweet, chipper self? It was all gone when we talked.

How will he get out of this alive if he refuses to let his mind fight for this? How on earth is he supposed to beat potential infections, pressure sores, and circulation disorders, if he doesn’t want to fight?

Fight, Harvey; just fight.

I can’t push these demons away all by myself. The monsters will eat me alive.

Paranoia at all the possible complications he might have to overcome hits me hard and square in the chest.

“So . . . what do you think?” Gia opens the door, and when I enter my new home, I feel none of the things I should feel: joy, happiness, excitement, fucking something good, anything good.

I’m so numb.

“Surprise! We moved all of your stuff for you guys!”

God, if only I could cry, feel, I could tell my sister she’s the best sister in the entire world. I don’t ever want to know what life would be like without her. She’s pregnant and tired half the time with her first child, yet she found a way to do all of this for me, for us.

I turn around and find a sympathetic smile on her face. Gia lost something in all of this, too, didn’t she?

I’ll never be the same.

I’m just too afraid to tell her that. Or maybe she already knows.

“Thank you.” I bring her to me, pouring out my feelings in a tight hug.

“Gem,” her voice croaks. “I’ll do anything to help—you know that. We’re all here for you. You’re not alone in this.” She pulls back, staring at me intently, trying to drill the message home.

Not alone, but for how long?

That’s always the pressing question, isn’t it? No matter how much death and despair sinks its teeth inside your skin, the clock keeps ticking and the world goes round and round, expecting you to keep pace.

Dear Holden
Kathleen Mare’e

Publication date: December 15th 2022
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

It all started with a letter.

This letter I am now holding in shaky hands that I must have read at least a dozen times already. A letter I felt compelled to retrieve from the public trashcan after that woman all but tossed it away. I know it was none of my business. It was wrong, and I know that. But after suffering through the kinds of loss that I had, my gut insisted that whoever took the time to write down their words didn’t deserve them to be left in the trash like they didn’t matter.

Because they should matter.

What’s the big deal right? It’s just a letter…

But the problem was, my name wasn’t Daphne.

And I wrote a letter back.
