Victoria & Violet by Rachel Brimble Book Tour!

Victoria & Violet

It should be a dream come true to serve the Queen of England…

When Violet Parker is told she will be Queen Victoria’s personal housemaid, she cannot believe her good fortune. She finally has the chance to escape her overbearing mother, a servant to the Duchess of Kent.

Violet hopes to explore who she is and what the world has to offer without her mother’s schemes overshadowing her every thought and action.

Then she meets James Greene, assistant to the queen’s chief political adviser, Lord Melbourne. From entirely different backgrounds and social class, Violet and James should have neither need nor desire to speak to one another, yet through their service, their paths cross and their lives merge—as do their feelings.

Only Victoria’s court is not always the place for romance, but rather secrets, scandals, and conspiracies…

Lucky Girl by M. Rickert Review!

Lucky Girl, How I Became A Horror Writer is a story told across Christmases, rooted in loneliness, horror, and the ever-lurking presence of Krampus written by World Fantasy and Shirley Jackson Award-winning author M. Rickert.

“Smooth and ruthless, Lucky Girl is M. Rickert at her ice-cold best.”—Laird Barron

Ro, a struggling writer, knows all too well the pain and solitude that holiday festivities can awaken. When she meets four people at the local diner—all of them strangers and as lonely as Ro is—she invites them to an impromptu Christmas dinner. And when that party seems in danger of an early end, she suggests they each tell a ghost story. One that’s seasonally appropriate.

But Ro will come to learn that the horrors hidden in a Christmas tale—or one’s past—can never be tamed once unleashed.

Before earning her MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts, Mary Rickert worked as kindergarten teacher, coffee shop barista, Disneyland balloon vendor and personnel assistant at Sequoia National Park. She now lives in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, a small city of candy shops and beautiful gardens.

She has published numerous short stories and two collections: Map of Dreams, which won the World Fantasy and Crawford Awards, and Holiday, which contains her World Fantasy Award winning short story, "Journey into the Kingdom." She also won a Shirley Jackson Award for her story, "The Corpse Painter's Masterpiece." The Memory Garden is her first novel.

My Thoughts

Lucky Girl by Mary Rickert is a short story just in time for Halloween. I am not sure why the title is called Lucky Girl, but maybe it is because she escaped death when her family was killed when she was young.

Backing up a bit, Roanoke, Ro for short, is the protagonist, she is an aspiring author. She is not fond of Christmas but when she is in a diner she meets five people, strikes up a conversation, and suggests that they get together for Christmas. They do and over subsequent Christmas get-togethers, we get to know more about Ro and her friends.

There is mention of Krampus, a horned anthropomorphic creature that comes out at Christmas. His goal is to scare children that have misbehaved all year. He does this with Santa and they reward the good children and punish the bad children.

The six people that get together, exchange gifts with the caveat that they steal the gifts. Doesn't matter what it is as long as it is stolen. Plus they are all supposed to tell a horror story. Quite the party if you ask me.

I found the short story to be a bit discombobulated at first, but after a while it started to make some sense. I do love a good horror story and this one is right up there. I think if you are looking for a story that will appease the Halloween spirit in you, then go get this one.

I give it 5 stars for the scare factor!

I received a copy of the book for review purposes only.

How Snowball Stole Christmas is book 3 in the Snowball series by @kristenmckanagh Book Blitz! #kristenmckanagh #HowSnowballStoleChristmas #XpressoTours⁣⁣ @XpressoTours⁣⁣

How Snowball Stole Christmas
Kristen McKanagh

(Snowball, #3)
Publication date: September 27th 2022
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Holiday

It’s Christmas time at the Weber Haus mountainside inn, where the official greeter, watcher, and matchmaker of the hotel’s resident humans is an adorably mischievous bundle of feline fluff named Snowball. Snowball takes her job very seriously –even if it means being a little more naughty than nice –and she’s ready to celebrate her third holiday season by making the purrrrfect match.

Most cats have nine lives, but Snowball is one of the very few with two jobs. Officially, she’s the Weber Haus inn’s greeter. Unofficially, she’s the town matchmaker. Her track record is the cat’s pajamas—until she meets her owner’s grinchy brother, Peter Diemer. Peter hopes to move the family bookstore to a busy location downtown—but someone else has outbid him for the last storefront.

Christmas is the ideal season for Lara Wolfe to fulfill her dream of expanding her home business into a real shop. Too bad someone is posting negative comments on the town forum. What kind of Grinch objects to a toy store?

Snowball is sure these two are a perfect match. They already have so much in common—books are a kind of toy, right? Now all they need to add to the mix is love, and Snowball has just the shenanigans up her furry sleeve to deliver a sweet romance in time to make the season merry and bright . . .

“Purrresistibly heartwarming.”

SNEAK PEEK:

Snowball finds a new couple who need her help falling in love…

A second car pulling to a stop, headlights flashing across the ceiling, is new. Did Peter bring someone home with him?

Do I care enough to go look?

With a sigh I drop to the ground and pad silently across the carpeted floor to leap to the windowsill facing the street. Peter lives in what he calls a townhome. As far as I can tell, this is just a bunch of homes all squished together with a tiny garden in the back. Hardly a patch. I can hear people on the other sides of the walls, but I can’t get into the other units. People are weird.

This is an interesting development though…

Someone is parked in front of the unit next door. Until a few days ago no one lived there that I’ve been able to tell. Until Christmas lights went up. I can see the side of Peter’s dark head turned slightly toward me as he’s looking over at what appears to be a woman buried up to her waist in the trunk of the car parked there.

What’s interesting isn’t her…it’s him. The fact that he’s bothering to look. Peter doesn’t bother with anyone these days.

My, my, my.

Visions of happy humans falling in love dance in my head.

After all, I have a gift for matchmaking. Those silly creatures just can’t see happiness staring them in the face until I show the way. And Peter, despite being a bit of a grump lately is one of the good ones. He deserves happiness.

Since he’s moved back home, he seems sort of… I don’t know. Restless. What Peter needs is to fall in love and settle down. That would fix everything.

He takes a step off the porch and my ears prick and my whiskers twitch in anticipation.

Except, instead of going over to nicely introduce himself, he stomps in her direction. I frown. What is he doing?

“Hey!” He doesn’t shout it, but with his low voice, it’s close enough.

With a screech to wake the ghosts of Christmas past, the woman jerks up, banging her head into the top of the trunk with enough force that I can hear it through the window.

Hand to her chest, she scrambles away from Peter, her expression a picture of fright.

Good job, Peter. I give a little kitty huff. He’s going to mess everything up before I can even get them started.

“Albert!” I shout.

He hates it when I call him that, so I make sure I always do. Serves him right since he decided to play my butler instead of spending his retirement at a sea cottage like he should have done when the military let us leave. He never told me exactly how he managed to get us released from our contracts.

“Albert! Where did you put our C-4 stash?”

“In the pantry!” he yells from somewhere in the kitchen. “The box below the crate with potatoes.”

I snort. And they say I’m the crazy one. I circle the stairs and open the pantry door. “Where?”

“Eleven o’clock. Watch your head!”

I turn to the left and smack my skull on the golf equipment bag hanging from the ceiling. “Jesus! I told you to keep your crap in the garage!”

“Not enough room,” Felix says from behind me. “Why do you need the C-4?”

“Roman needs me to blow up some shit tomorrow.”

“Another Italian warehouse?”

“A truck with their drugs this time.” I remove the crate with potatoes and reach for the box. “You can’t store explosives with food, damn it. I’m taking this to the basement.”

Neva Altaj writes steamy contemporary mafia romance about damaged antiheroes and strong heroines who fall for them. She has a soft spot for crazy jealous, possessive alphas who are willing to burn the world to the ground for their woman.

Excerpt

Copyright 2022 @S.A. Clayton

The instant I open the door and see the figure bent over the hood of his car, my heart stops. I haven't seen Kacey Reid since prom night when he drove Kelsey and me home after our disastrous dates ditched us at the after-party. I secretly fell in love with him that night, basking in the way the rage washed over him when Kelsey explained what happened, loving the way his eyes softened when he met my eyes and gave me his jacket when I was cold. I tried to forget him, even moving to the other side of the continent, but nothing worked. I was still in love with my best friend’s twin brother.

“Well look who decided to finally come back home after all these years,” Kacey teases, that knowing smirk playing at the edges of his lips as his blue eyes latch onto mine. I take a breath, wondering how one man can change so much and yet so little in three years. His once shaggy blond hair is cut short, tendrils falling strategically in front of his face, making him look older than his twenty-one years. His crystal-clear blue eyes still cause my insides to flip every time they’re trained on me and those tattoos…they’re new. Both arms are covered and from the little I can see of his chest through his white t-shirt, that’s covered too.

“I've been home, you’re just never here,” I quip, loving the way his eyes shine with humor as they meet mine.

“Touché,” he says before grabbing the rag from his back pocket and wiping the grease from his hands. I wonder what those hands would feel like against me, how the calluses on those fingertips would feel gripping me tightly as I…I shake my head, silently berating myself for going there when I know I can't.

“I didn't know you were home?” My voice cracks as I make my way to the fridge on the other side of the car. Kacey’s eyes follow my every move. There was a time when I would have begged him to look at me the way he is right now, but I have to keep my distance because from what Kelsey has told me, he will ruin me.

“I’m not. My new place doesn't have a garage to store this baby,” he says, shutting the hood. “I keep it here and Mom and Dad let me come over and work on it.” I nod, turning so my back is against the fridge, and our eyes connect.

“Are you sure it's not just a ploy to get you to come home more?” I say, his eyes widening as if the thought never crossed his mind.

“Well shit,” he mutters, a small laugh leaving his throat as I smile, turning back around to get the beers out of the fridge. The second my back is turned and the door is open, I sense him behind me.

“Kacey, what are you doing?” I whisper just as his fingers grip my waist, hauling me back until I can feel all of him. Every hard inch. My breath shudders as those deft fingers trace over my hip and rest just over the waistband of my bikini bottoms.

“Do you know how many times I’ve told myself to stay away from you?” he mutters against my neck, the stubble on his jaw causing delicious friction against my skin. “Do you know how many times I’ve had to remind myself that you're my sister’s best friend?” I shake my head, my fingers gripping his wrist as the tips of his fingers drop just below my bikini, causing every breath to leave my lungs.

“Kacey we can't do this,” I whisper, closing my eyes and wishing we could, wishing I could feel what his lust feels like against me, what his passion would feel like inside me.

“I know,” he growls against the shell of my ear, nipping at the lobe until I’m putty in his hands. “But that doesn't mean I can walk away without a taste…”

In her rural Virginia office, Lorena García Fernández bypassed the usual salacious story about the Ìovorian princess and snipped out the article about her business trip. The blades of her scissors slid through the newspaper in long, clean lines, perfectly even on every side. Although she sometimes wondered why Westmoreland County still used physical newspapers, she had to admit it was handy now.

She set the article in its frame and glanced at the front door to see if her second-in-command had arrived. No sign of her, but then again, it wasn’t even seven o’clock yet. Cool early-morning sunlight streamed through the windows and glass door. Lorena straightened the clipping, pressed the back of the frame into place, and double-checked how it looked from the front. Flawless. She rose from her chair and hung the article on the wall between two testimonials, neat and level.

Her ginger cat, Amado, rubbed against her ankles before hopping onto the desk, his tail twitching impishly. He wove between two photos of Lorena in Ìovoria—one selfie set in rolling green hills, one in the ancient capital city—and leapt onto the windowsill, where he settled to chirp at a bird.

The lock clicked, and the bell over the front door jingled. In walked Lorena’s best friend and vice president, Natascha Barclave, juggling her purse and several binders overflowing with papers. Her mouse-brown curls were pulled into a french braid but already frizzing around the edges of her freckled face. She reached out with one full hand and flipped the CLOSED sign to OPEN with her pinkie finger. “I’m here, I’m here. And it may not look like it, but I’m fully prepared for the Johnson intake interview at ten.”

“Are those my Wallace-Díaz notes?” Lorena took the binders and set them safely on the welcome desk. “What the hell did you do to them?”

“Chill. Everything’s still in there. It’s just a little, um, messier.” Natascha dropped her purse onto the desk chair. They did their quick secret handshake and bumped fists before getting back to business. “I took Casey Bright home, too, and ran the numbers. We should set her up with Allie Masterson. They were a 90 percent match in the algorithm, and I think they’d get along well.”

Lorena flipped through the Bright binder and found the printout of the results. Promising indeed. “Okay, let’s talk first-date options after my eight o’clock review with Eve Ebron.”

Her work cell rang atop her desk. Lorena snatched up the phone and pressed it to her ear. “Thank you for calling Love, Lorena. This is Lorena. How can I help you?”

“Good morning, love!” The two familiar, Ìovorian-brogued voices sounded far away: Teague and Ailsa Duglass on speakerphone. The two thirtysomething aristocrats talked over each other before Ailsa shushed Teague and asked Lorena, “How’s your first day back in the office? Is the jet lag bad?”

“Not too bad, but I will say I already miss Ìovoria.” She leaned against the desk. “How are y’all?”

“Enjoying the honeymoon you planned for us.” Teague’s smile shone through his voice.

“Thank you again for everything you did, bringing us together,” Ailsa said. “It was all straight out of a fairy tale. I never thought I had a perfect match, but you found him.”

“Think you’ll find that someone special of your own soon?” Teague asked.

Lorena’s throat closed, but she tossed out a blasé “Nah. My to-do list is long enough.” As if she couldn’t be bothered, as if she’d hardly considered it at all. As if her own parents’ brutal divorce hadn’t convinced her long ago love wasn’t in the cards for her. Not now, not ever.

“Not to worry, we won’t hold you up. You’ve plenty of clients to help, I’m sure.” Ailsa paused meaningfully. “We wanted to let you know a little something special is coming your way soon.”

A thank-you card, maybe? If Lorena was lucky, it would include a hefty tip. Running an international matchmaking company wasn’t cheap. “You didn’t have to do that. Thank you.”

“No, thank you,” Ailsa corrected her. “I’ve never been happier in my life. You have a gift, you know?”

Lorena’s heart warmed. Nothing felt as good as a satisfied customer.

SNEAK PEEK:

I glared at our wilted set of crops, trying to reconcile myself to the idea that the Earth’s soil was likely poisoned. One thing after another, I thought. We can’t overcome everything.

“Kali.”

I glanced over at him, meeting his even gaze. He smiled at me then, slowly, and I let the warmth of it spread through my body.

“We will get through this,” he said, and I almost believed him.

There was something about being with him—it was a feeling that everything was right, like some cold, wayward pieces of a puzzle were falling into place. I bit my lip and looked back over the field. But I can’t be with him… We can’t…

And then I was warm. His arms circled around me, his chest pressing against my back. Without thinking, I leaned into him, and he brushed his lips along my neck. My emotions exploded and fire burned in my chest. I gripped his arms, holding him against me, trying to keep my reactions in check.

“We will find a way forward,” he murmured, his breath against my skin. “And if we discover there is no way, then we will forge a new one. Together.”

Together. An impossible word.

Impossible, yet I wanted it more than anything. Here, so close to him, I was burning. I was drowning. Not able to resist any longer, I turned and kissed him, and the flame in my chest responded, exploding through my veins. My fingers curled into his shirt as his hands wound through my hair. I let myself float in it for a moment—a pure, blissful moment—before I gently stepped away. I moved out of his arms—to a place where I was cold. To where I was empty.

His eyes were like an animal’s, wild and electric, and we watched each other as we silently reined ourselves in. The loss of him settled like a pit in my stomach. “There is no, ‘together,’ Tiamat. Not for us.”

His lips parted, his face going blank from shock. “What?”

“This is nothing new. We can’t even be near each other. It’s killing me!”

“Kali,” he pleaded, grabbing for my arms. His nose had started bleeding, but he briskly swiped it away. Did he think I wouldn’t notice the blood?

I backed up, yet he continued toward me, one step after another. “You’re wrong,” he said. “What you just said is entirely new! Proximity is difficult for us, I know. And yes, we have to be careful.” I climbed up on a mound of earth and debris we had cleared from the field, trying to put some space between us. Seeing it, he stopped his advance, his hands dropping to his sides. “But … we are meant to be together,” he continued. “Can you not feel it? Kali! Tell me you don’t feel that.”

“I feel it,” I whispered. “And it’s too much.”

“Don’t say that.”

“I have to say it!” I blurted. “I can’t do this anymore, Tiamat,” I said, gesturing at the space between us. “I want to get close to you… I need to. Something inside me feels wired that way. And it isn’t fair.” His eyes were wide, swimming with a look of disbelief. And loss. I ripped my gaze away, fixing my stare on the dirt by my foot.

“Have we been reduced to this?” he asked. “Where you won’t even look at me? Where our love has become pain?”

“You’re wrong,” I said. “Our love isn’t just pain. It’s death.”

“Then I choose death.” His voice was a growl. “I have said it before. It is mine to choose.”

“No!” I shouted, snapping my eyes to his face. “I won’t argue about this anymore. It’s the same thing, around and around and around!” I felt my eyes burning and beginning to fill. I blinked, trying to keep the tears at bay. “Every second we’re close, I can feel your Shadow slowly killing you.” My voice softened as I took in his stricken expression. “Tiamat … How can I be okay with that? How can I allow myself to be the cause of that?”

“Kali… you have never been the cause. It’s the Shadow.” He scrubbed his hands over his face in agitation. “I can figure this out. Just … hang on a little longer.”

A single murder… An unidentified animal skull … Sightings of a tusked horse … Flesh on the bones of an old Scottish myth.

A struggling Scottish scientist holds a potential unicorn skull in his hands. If he proves it’s authentic, his career will be made. If he dies trying, he won’t be the first.

Gillan McArdle’s academic career is ending because of one stupid lapse of judgment. But he’s the most talented young archaeologist in Scotland, and a Dundee based media outfit can use his skills. Offered a short term contract, he lands on the Hebridean island of Harris to investigate obscure animal bones. Quickly dismissing the unicorn skull as a thinly disguised fake, he can’t deny there’s something unusual about these bones. Baited by rumours of a majestic tusked horse roaming the upland moors, Gill begins to suspect someone is manipulating him. As he gradually unravels the mystery of the skull, he arrives at one disturbing conclusion. If this creature does exist, all the evidence suggests it’s a killer.

Tormod has lived in the East Neuk of Fife, with the love of his life for the last two decades. He beach combs Scotland for mysteries and legends, and his short stories are published in New Writing Scotland 37, Retreat West, and the Grindstone Open Prose competition.

He studied Economics at the University of Strathclyde and since then he's worked in magazines, media, and marketing. These days, when he's not working or writing, he can be found pottering around Anstruther Harbour; mending lobster creels in a grubby fair isle jumper, and hanging around grumpy fishermen.

A big fan of Rankin, Tormod's work aspires to that lofty height, but with fewer murders. He strives for the same sense of place achieved by Ann Cleeves, with a character as appealing as Jimmy Perez

The Bone Trap' is Tormod's first novel and the first in the 'Mysterious Scotland' series.

My Thoughts

The Bone Trap is the first of three books in the Mysterious Scotland Series, the next is the Ness Deception and the last is The Stone Cypher. The Bone Trap takes the reader on quite the voyage.

"Isle of Harris, nine months ago"

"Callum McKellar isn't missing anymore. He's not injured, lost, or confused. He's dead. Someone or something, has ripped a hole in his back and snatched out his life. And now, staring at his broken body, sprawled in the heather, Ailsa knows she'll carry the burden of this memory for the rest of her life."

Thus starts the first chapter, which had me intrigued from there. The story takes place in the upper reaches of Scotland on the Hebridian island of Harris.. Very remote and steeped in local folklore. Gillan McCardle is an archaeologist who has been disgraced due to a simple mistake he made while working at the college.

Gill is approached by a man who has a media company that has various magazines. One of them is a mystery magazine. There are some unusual bones, that looks like a horse skull but had a spot on the forehead that had a horn. A unicorn? Maybe maybe not. He does a further investigation into an old smelter.

He finds that there are experiments going on, this after a harrowing way he has to enter the area. He finds that there are horses of varying degrees of abuse. He is further intrigued and enlists the assistance of Aisla, an elderly woman with the 'Sight" and the assistance of a woman, Rani, who is a research scientist and is appalled at the way the horses are treated.

With Rani's assistance, he learns more about what is going on. The scientists are able to isolate the DNA that would enable the horse under certain conditions, to evolve into a totally different creature. This becomes dangerous after there is a fire at the smelter and the employees escape. They do come back wanting what they think belongs to them.

With the permission of the landowner, he is able with the help of an archaeologist team to dig to see if they can find the bones of the mythical creatures that they sure had existed. Genetics have been manipulated. What they find is truly amazing and worth the effort of the dig. But they are not safe as there are people who do not want the findings known.

This story borders on fantasy, is it possible for there to be actual unicorns or waterhorses as they were called in this book. Danger abounds for all of the characters involved. Once I got into the story I really enjoyed it. Lots of believable characters and side stories, the sight of course is interesting in itself. There is danger and excitement throughout the book, I finished the book in record time.

I think if you enjoy a story that is of the mystical sort, of course, takes place in Scotland, then you can't go wrong with this novel. I look forward to reading the other two in the series,  especially the second one, The Ness Deception. anything having to do with the Loch Ness monster has me giddy!

I rate it 5 stars.

I received a copy of the book for review purposes only.
