  The Osprey Man

Description Osprey Man by Christopher Tuthill

Jacob is at that most magical time between childhood and adolescence. As the end of the school year approaches, he is dreaming of baseball and the beach, but most of all, about working on the comic book he and his best friend Jonathan have created, The Osprey Man. Then tragedy strikes and Jacob has to find an inner strength he is not sure he has.

This beautifully written tale of youth, coping, and working through grief is ideal for readers of all ages.

The Osprey Man, Chapter Twenty-four

Riverhead was not a big town, and hadn’t many streetlights, but in the mountains there was no light at all. Jacob had never seen so many stars. The Milky Way shone bright that night, illuminating the sky like a bright spine of fireworks above them.

And the meteors! They flew through the sky all night long, looking sometimes like they might drop into the mountains and set them ablaze. One, two, three, four every minute, it seemed. They came for hours, right up until Jacob became exhausted and his father picked him up in his huge, calloused hands, carried him in his wiry strong arms to sleep in the tent, dreaming of the stars and planets and of someday travelling out among them, like Han Solo or Jon Carter of Mars, from the movies and books he loved so well.

Tonight they shone bright and beautiful, if not as brilliantly as they had up in the mountains. Jacob watched as one after another the meteors screamed across the sky, burning incandescence that seemed to teem with life. Jacob imagined riding one of them out among the stars and then harnessing it down to earth, like some intergalactic cowboy.

The Perseids, Jacob knew, were impossibly old and well-travelled. They flew through the solar system, out in the desolation of space, only to return every year and remind everyone where they came from. At least, that was how Henry had put it. Henry had told Jacob that the Perseids returned every year, and would continue to do so for many hundreds and thousands of years after their family was dust. Jacob had verified this with some books on astronomy from the library. The Perseids were indeed old, having been first observed some two thousand years before, in the year 36. They were part of the comet Swift-Tuttle, and appeared in constellation Perseus. Jacob also learned that the particles they were made of were formed at the start of the universe, about four and a half billion years ago. He marveled over the number, which reminded him of Carl Sagan and Cosmos. Billions of years, just one Earth, and on it, only one Jacob.

The incredible age of the comets only made Jacob love them all the more. They had been there when the Earth was formed. They passed through the night sky for the dinosaurs. They had been there in the time of the Bible. They were there for Mikey, and now here they were again, a fireworks show for Jacob, Henry and Alice. A show more spectacular than anything the tiny town of Riverhead could put up, more glorious than any human, anywhere could devise.

Jacob was filled with reverence for the meteors, and felt they spoke to him as they descended. So, too, was he filled with love for the whole town, even for people like Andy who didn’t like him. Because Andy was part of humanity too. Maybe he didn’t seem like it all the time, but he was, just like every other person on the planet.

Jacob sat in his lawn chair watching the sky, and across from him sat his parents in their chairs, holding hands and smiling. Jacob didn’t know what kind of mysterious change had overcome them this summer, but he was pleased about it. He no longer looked for reasons to be away from home, or to skip supper, or to stay in his room all day reading comics and books (though he still enjoyed doing that.)

For maybe the first time since Mikey died two years before, Jacob felt like they were a family. He felt loved, and happy, and knew that things would be alright. He still missed Mikey terribly, and Jon as well. But it was a lucky thing to feel so wanted and loved. He looked to the stars, and in them, he felt he could see the hopes of his family coming down through the years.

After a long while, the shower was tapering off. The only sound Jacob heard was the chirping of crickets, and the rustling of leaves in the late-night breeze. He shivered against the cool air. The summer days were waning, and he knew that soon the days would turn shorter and brisker. Jacob hated the thought of school, and he worried again about having enough days left to make his summer complete.

Guest Review by Laura

The summer of 1984 in Long Island forms the backdrop for this stunning YA novel, entitled, 'The Osprey Man.' Imagine this: it's the last day of fourth grade, you are looking forward to a simple, but fun summer of going to the beach, hanging out with friends, playing baseball and reading comic books.

You are a young boy just starting out in life, and the whole world is at your feet. Until, one morning when you receive the devastating news that your best friend has been killed. This is the sequence of events that begins Christopher Tuthill's novel, 'The Osprey Man,' and changes the course of the protagonist, Jacob's, life forever.

The title of the book is based off of the name of the comic book that Jacob and his friend, Jon waere working on, before Jon's passing. The Osprey Man was meant to be a hero who avenges animals from cruelty and poaching, something that both boys felt very passionately about. But with Jon gone, the future of the comic lies in jeopardy, and Jacob is not sure if he wants to continue it.

Added to that are family struggles, as the death has brought up a lot of unresolved grief for Jacob's parents, who lost their younger son, Mikey two years earlier. Navigating these struggles, Jacob still manages to have an enjoyable summer with new friends and new discoveries.

This YA coming-of-age novel is a heartwarming tale of grief, friendship and perseverance told through the age of a young boy on the verge of becoming a teenager, and Tuthill portrays this perfectly.

'The Osprey Man,' is a touching look back, combining the simple times of childhood and the 1980's in a way that makes the reader feel happy with the result.

I loved the charming tone of this book and the hopeful, contented ending.

SNEAK PEEK:

Bonnie felt Joe pull her in close. She felt him caressing her shoulders and kissing her back. She even heard him whisper a promise for a better life, before she allowed her body to fully relax and fall into a deep sleep. She awoke sometime later in the night. Bonnie wasn’t sure of the time at first, only that it was dark. A glance at the digital clock told her it was eleven at night, she rolled over to feel the bed. As usual Joe was gone, but she knew exactly where to find him. Bonnie had on a long sleeve henley and a pair of booty shorts, but she could feel the familiar chill from the deck door being cracked. He left it open to listen for her stirring. That was one of the things about Joe she adored. He loved her unconditionally the way no man ever had. He did everything she asked of him just to be with her. She knew it was wrong of her to be angry with him. He did everything he could to keep her safe while she was captive and to get her back as soon as possible. Shit the other boys didn’t seem to care. Ray, he had a special kind of hell waiting for him, and Henry. Bonnie was hurt Henry didn’t show up for her. She knew Joe had to have called him, but nobody showed up like a knight in shining armor the way he did. Joe did everything right and she was taking her own guilt out on him. Maybe it was time to break up the gang and move on with their lives. She had more than enough money stock piled to live off of. Maybe just a few more big heists and then they would be able to hang up their boots forever. She sighed. Joe turned to find her staring at him from the doorway. The pale light from the house illuminating her like a goddess. She was a goddess to him though, and he desperately needed to make things right. Bonnie tossed a playful smile his way. The small motion was all he needed for encouragement. He cleared the space between them in no time. Joe scooped her into his arms pulling her in a giant hug. He lifted her, and Bonnie wrapped her legs around him. He carried her to the bed, kicking the door closed behind him.

“I’m sorry.” Bonnie nuzzled her face against his cheek. His facial hair tickled her cheek in a way that always turned her on. She needed Joe. He was her person, more than anyone else, more than a one night fling with a kidnapper. The thoughts of Cj came slamming into her head. She had to deny all of it. She had to bury those away somewhere. Right now she wanted Joe and only Joe. She wanted to escape to a private island and never see anyone else ever again.

His voice rasped against her ear, and she felt his hot breath as he whispered, “I am sorry too Bee. You are my goddess, I love you more than anything else in this world, I would go to the ends of the earth just to find you. I would do everything one hundred times over if it was the only way to end up with you and only you.”

Hell, this boy knew just what to say to her to melt her cold icy heart. His lips were hard on her as they kissed over every last inch of her body he could reach without putting her down. Joe spun around, diverting from the bed to the nearest wall. He threw her up against it, sliding one hand around her ass to help support the weight, while the other snaked under her shirt to cup and squeeze her breasts. He released his grip but only to tease her nipple, running his finger across it. His mouth still working to deliver kisses up and down her neck, under her ears, then back to Bonnie’s waiting lips. She traced her finger across his lips seductively, teasing him. Joe kissed those too. He caught her by surprise when he sucked one inside his mouth and ran his tongue up her finger before allowing it to slip from his hungry lips

As the god of war and bringer of order and justice I can have anything. Except one mortal woman.

I came to Astrid’s prayer for justice. Why, I didn’t know. I should have left after that, but I didn’t. Something about the mortal woman lured me like no other had. It was wrong, I knew that. I should have allowed her to live out her short years as they were intended.

Yet, not even I am a match for a yearning heart.

From shared drinking horns to unforgettable nights, I am determined to bring her the honor she deserves, just as she has sworn to shield me from the horrors of the world. But when trouble amongst the gods stirs, Astrid may just pay the price for my transgressions.

And the price for spilling the blood of my valkyrie, is one too steep for any god.

SNEAK PEEK:

Just before I reached the front door, it flew open and Ilka exited my family home. When she spotted me, she gave me a smug smile. I ignored her, gaining an indignant huff, though based on the following offended sound and her storming off, Týr had as well.

I slowly approached the now-open door, straining to listen. The jarl was ranting.

“They parted ways!” he shouted. “Parted ways when they reached the center of the village. They were supposed to go out together, not leave because—”

“Because Týr showed up,” my father said. “Your son is smart, Rune. He won’t push a matter that he won’t win.”

The jarl snarled. Actually snarled. I’d heard rumors he might be a berserker—warriors capable of transforming into bipedal wolves or bears, with enhanced strength and other senses—but now I was wondering if that were true. “And we had an agreement, Bjǫrn. You and Randi help me obtained the jarl position and I make sure your family has high favor and be just as well-off. Then we’d marry our eldest daughter and son each to solidify our alliance.”

My father sighed, as if they were rehashing a conversation, yet again. “I’ve honored half of it with Leif and Frida’s marriage. But as I’ve told you, things have changed with Astrid. I cannot agree to marry her to your son until I have confirmation.”

My brow lifted. Confirmation about what?

“And if he never does?”

“He will,” my mother said. “I’ve seen it.”

“Stay out of this, Randi,” Jarl Rune snapped. “Your predictions can be wrong.”

“And you only began pushing this marriage issue when Astrid’s magic finally manifested.” My mother’s tone had a dark edge to it. “You were content to allow your eldest son to pursue another alliance until that moment. What does that say about your desire to uphold our previous agreement?”

“Watch your tongue, volva, or I’ll rip it out of your mouth personally.”

My hands balled into fists and my lip curled. A muscle in my neck twitched in rhythm with the rising pulse pounding in my ears. How dare he talk to my mother that way.

Wood scraped on wood. “I will tell you this once, Rune, out of respect for our friendship. If you ever speak to my wife like that again, I will turn you into a bleating mare.”

I choked on a laugh, my anger cooling. My father certainly has a set of balls.

As entertaining as some of this was, I needed to give my parents a break from the jarl’s anger.

“Father? Mother?” I called out, approaching the door. “I’m back.”

I poked my head inside to find my father and Jarl Rune standing toe-to-toe in a glaring contest. My mother sat at the table watching with a bored expression, and Leif was nowhere to be seen. Probably off with his betrothed.

“Did you get everything?” my father asked me without looking away from the jarl.

“No, not everything, but I do have something extra,” I said. “Plus, we have a guest.”

My mother’s attention snapped up and my father finally looked away from the jarl. The jarl also turned at the same time to see me leading Týr into the house. He had to duck low due to his height, and the bear only made it a little more complicated.

My mother gasped and my father’s brows shot up. “Týr, I do hope our daughter didn’t cause you any trouble.”

Týr smiled. “She never does. Only keeps my life interesting.”

My father nodded approvingly. “Randi, I think bear would be better for tonight’s meal than fish.”

“I agree, love. Týr, you’ll be staying of course, yes?”

He smiled at my mother. “I would be happy to.”

“Jarl Rune, will you be joining us as well?” I inquired, only out of politeness. I knew by the frustrated look on his face what his answer would be.

The jarl shook his head. “No, I must be returning home. However, Astrid, I have a question for you.”

“Rune…” my father warned.

“Yes, what is it, Jarl?” I could handle this scrutiny.

“Was my daughter correct in telling me you and my son parted ways in the village?”

I blinked, putting on my best innocent act. “Yes, that’s right. Father said I only had to go into town with him.”

I could see my father trying to bite back a proud smile in front of our jarl.

“But you didn’t insist he join you with your tasks outside the town, as I had requested?” the jarl pushed.

Before I could speak, Týr did. “You have an intelligent son, Rune. He knows quite well who he can and cannot compete with.”

I swallowed and squeezed my legs together at the possessive sound to his words.

Jarl Rune sucked in a tight breath and then nodded. “I should be leaving. Have a good day, all of you.”

He left without even a glance back, and slammed the door behind him.

Rooted and Winged by Luanne Castle Guest Post!

The poems of Rooted and Winged explore the emotional and physical movement of flight and falling. They are of the earth, the place of fertile origins, and of the dream world we observe and imagine when we look upward. Golems and ghosts that emerge from the ground, as well as the birds and angels that live above us, inhabit the collection. We will always be striving for flight, even as we feel most comfortable closest to the earth.

Guest Post

When a cousin heard that my new book is titled Rooted and Winged, she said, “Your family gave you roots and wings?” This assumption might be a logical leap since my last book, Kin Types, was a thin chapbook based on my family history and genealogy.

Therefore, I had to think for a bit about my relative’s question because the book, as a whole, isn’t so much about family as it is my own life, exterior and interior. As I thought about what she had said, I began to see some sense in her question.

The book contains several poems about my maternal grandparents and a few about my elderly mother. My grandparents, in particular, helped me grow roots—roots to our extended family tree, our ancestors in Michigan and the Netherlands, and Kalamazoo, where my family has lived since the late 1800s. For example, the poem “Gravity” conjures up these farmers, shopkeepers, tailors, and shoemakers: “Even before us, they [these ancestors] plowed fields / and sewed leather onto soles, their lives / spun from the loom beneath them.”

My grandparents taught me how to live and thrive in connection with the earth:

You balance a new potato in your palm,

ask me to decide if we dig now or let

them stay buried to toughen up.

Grandma and Grandpa—and my other ancestors--gave me a sense of where I could grow from and the nutrients to allow that to happen. In that way, I suppose, they contributed to the winged quality of my imagination.

But, like the Leonard Cowgill drawing on the book’s front cover, the concepts of rooted and winged are more complex. Our connection with the earth gives us everything, even rebirth.

If you press your bare feet

from where you come they will be

reborn to touch differently than face

or hands (“The Purpose of Earth”)

In these poems, I explore different variations of wings and what they mean. Sometimes the wings are mere stubs or outlines; sometimes they are artificial such as a parachute. Often, wings are found where they belong, on birds or angels, but for humans, they are imagined as a way to soar above it all. Wings can take us to heaven or provide the illusion that they do so. They can also leave us plunging to earth.

Even birds and bats fall to earth when

they die

Golems rumble out of the earth but

we fail to recognize them as we crash

to the ground together (“The Purpose of Earth”)

Yet even when we try to soar and fail, the trace of angels remains with us:

See the knobby scars

where the wings once grew as spindles

(“How They Fall”)

We will always be caught in movement between our grip on earth and our desire to fly, between our mortal lives and heavenly eternity.

Seventeen-year-old Mireya is the youngest person on Earth in 2055. Well, one of them. She and her classmates on the military base where she lives are survivors of Zika-Two, a mosquito-borne virus that took out the very youngest and oldest of the world’s population fifteen years earlier and rendered the remaining humans infertile.

Formerly banned research into cloning, genetic engineering, and artificial intelligence is green-lighted by a government desperate to prevent looming human extinction. In fact, it was experimental nanotechnology that saved the lives of Mireya and her friends.

She’s always been told this makes her special. She certainly doesn’t feel special. As hard as she tries, she can never seem to please her indifferent parents, and her periodic memory lapses threaten to sink her already-shameful class rank to dead last. She just wants to be like everyone else, to be normal.

Mireya’s never left the base, never wanted to, and never questioned why she’s been content to stay there her whole life—until she runs into Heath. Actually, he bumped into her with his Gideon Corp delivery van. She’s not hurt, but she is baffled.

Why did the alluring young guy look at her like he knows her? And why did he seem shocked at her very average eye color?

When one-by-one her friends visit the physician and come back acting like strangers, Mireya decides to venture beyond the gates of the base to the nearby city of Atlanta to search for answers. And for Heath.

What she’ll find is the imposing walls surrounding Gideon Corp, the world’s largest corporation, hide many secrets about the cataclysmic global event and perhaps even Mireya herself.

DESIGNED is perfect for readers who loved Hunger Games, Divergent, Delirium, The Wrath & the Dawn, and the Selection.

SNEAK PEEK:

“Warning. Collision alert. Warning.”

The loud electronic voice reached me a second too late. I’d already stepped off the curb into the street and directly into the path of a delivery van.

A flash of white and chrome filled my peripheral vision as the bumper made contact with my left hip, sending me to the pavement with a wince and a yelp.

The good news was I wasn’t flattened by the thing. The nearly silent electric vehicles were programmed with collision avoidance tech that slowed them automatically in case of a sudden obstacle, which meant it hit me hard enough to knock me over but not hard enough to crush bones.

The bad news was I could already hear the shouting of the obviously perturbed operator through the van’s closed windows. No doubt the accident had surprised him as much as it had me.

He’d probably been relaxing in the back of the self-driving vehicle watching vids or reading when he’d felt the jolt and sudden stop. Now he was storming around to the front of it, spewing a stream of profanities.

“What the hell are you doing?” the van operator demanded. “Didn’t you see me coming?”

Before I could respond or get up on my own, a pair of strong hands slid beneath my arms. He picked me up off the ground and set me upright. I would have protested the invasion of my personal space, but it all happened too fast.

Brushing off the seat of my uniform, I tested my footing, lifting and wiggling one foot then the other.

The ache in my tailbone told me I would be sporting some very colorful bruises tomorrow, and my butt couldn’t have been any wetter if I’d cannonballed into a swimming pool. Lovely.

“So are you okay? Say something.”

Anger still emanated off the guy in waves, but his deep voice now held a note of concern. What could I say? I felt like an idiot.

“Of course I saw you. I just thought getting run down would be a good way to score some tech augmentation in my lower limbs.”

I finally glanced up at the man– who hadn’t responded and was not laughing at my joke.

My hair was in my eyes, disheveled from my fall. I pushed it from my face, and the sight in front of me nearly knocked me backward again.

Technically, I supposed he was a man, but he was younger than I’d expected, close to my age.

He was big. And angry. His dark brows were drawn together tightly. It wasn’t the forbidding expression that stunned me. It was his eyes.

Their color was like nothing I’d ever seen before– a spellbinding combination of blue and green so beautiful, so piercing, it almost defied reality.

I was so mesmerized it took me a second to realize he was staring at me, too. He’d been in the middle of a question.

“So then you’re not hur–” but he’d broken off mid-word.

After a long pause during which he continued to stare at me like he’d never seen a girl before, he spoke again. “Your eyes. They’re brown.”

“Yeah…” I dragged the word out into a question. “… last time I checked.”

Something about his troubled expression struck a cord of recognition. I glanced from his incredible eyes to the shock of dark hair above them and down to the breadth of his shoulders then the rest of his tall, big boned frame and then at the name badge on the front left pocket of his company uniform.

Heath.

“Have we met before?”

The guy blinked rapidly and back-stepped toward the delivery van, his head moving in a tight, rapid shake.

“No, I don’t think so. You’re okay? You’re not hurt?”

He paused for my answer, but his back and shoulders were plastered against the front of the van like I was dipped in flu virus and he hadn’t had a vaccination in years.

The instant I said, “I’m fine,” the guy turned and climbed into the van. Within seconds it was whispering away down the road, the unmistakable Gideon Corp logo on its back doors shrinking then disappearing as the vehicle rounded the corner.

Oookay. It was obvious why he was a delivery man for the world’s largest biotech company and not employed in some capacity where he might have been required to interact with actual humans on a regular basis.

Totally awkward.

But cute.

She’s lived on both coasts of Canada and has a love of being near the water and close to a forest. Thus, it makes perfect sense that she moved to the prairies of Southern Alberta over twenty years ago.

During the warmer months you’ll find her escaping to nearby Waterton Lakes National Park with her cooler stocked full of chocolate and pastries. Occasionally, the once avid hiker will even set out on one of the many hiking trails and hope she doesn’t run into a hungry bear.

Christina is a member of Sisters in Crime and enjoys interacting on social media.
