Book Title: Floats the Dark Shadow

Series: The Paris Trilogy

Author: Yves Fey

Publication Date: September 2022 (Second Edition)

Publisher: Tygerbright Press

Audiobook: narrated by Hollie Jackson

Page Length: 340 pages

Genre: Historical Mystery

Young American painter Theodora Faraday struggles to become an artist in Belle Époque Paris. She’s tasted the champagne of success, illustrating poems for the Revenants, a group of poets led by her adored cousin, Averill.

When children she knows vanish mysteriously, Theo confronts Inspecteur Michel Devaux who suspects the Revenants are involved. Theo refuses to believe the killer could be a friend—could be the man she loves. Classic detection and occult revelation lead Michel and Theo through the dark underbelly of Paris, from catacombs to asylums, to the obscene ritual of a Black Mass.

Following the maze of clues they discover the murderer believes he is the reincarnation of the most evil serial killer in the history of France—Gilles de Rais. Once Joan of Arc’s lieutenant, after her death he plunged into an orgy of evil. The Church burned him at the stake for heresy, sorcery, and the depraved murder of hundreds of peasant children.

Whether deranged mind or demonic passion incite him, the killer must be found before he strikes again.

Villains Past and Present –  Scene from the Catacombs - Floats the Dark Shadow

A blaze of red caught Theo’s eye. In the far corner of the room, someone was talking to Averill. Intent on memorizing the crypt, Theo had not seen him leave. Averill’s back was to her, blocking her view of his companion, but the man gestured dramatically, showing an expanse of crimson lining his velvet cape. Then they bent their heads together, talking intently. Was this the person he’d had been searching for earlier?

Just then, Averill turned and walked back toward her. He looked pleased with himself. Unable to resist, she asked, “Who is the man wearing the cape?”

“Vipèrine,” Averill said, tasting the syllables. He nodded over his shoulder. “Apt, no?”

“Oh yes, sinuous as a snake,” she agreed, looking back across the room. This man would make an absolutely perfect villain to illustrate one of Averill’s poems. He was dressed predominately in black, some long robe that suggested a priest’s cassock. Draped over it was the rich cape, its lining vivid as fresh spilled blood. Arcane symbols circled the hem, embroidered in heavy gold thread and studded with faux jewels. Most amazing of all, his beard was dyed brilliant cobalt. Theo’s lips quivered at the splendid ridiculousness of it all. But she didn’t laugh. Vipèrine stood like an actor commanding center stage—or a king holding court.

“He thinks he’s the incarnation of Gilles de Rais, with his blue beard,” Paul muttered.

“Hubris.” Casimir’s nostrils flared with disdain.

“Far worse than hubris—he fancies himself a poet.” Paul snorted with disgust.

“Worse than fancying himself Gilles de Rais?” Averill asked.

“Far worse. You didn’t have to read his submissions to Le Revenant.” Paul gave a theatrical shiver. “Hideous. I rejected them all.”

Casimir’s hands arced, suggesting a banner or title. “Beware Bluebeard’s revenge.”

Paul sniggered.

“I have a poem about Bluebeard,” Averill said to them. Theo had not read any such. When she gave a questioning glance, he gestured vaguely. “A work in progress.”

“Who was Gilles de Rais?” Theo asked bluntly. She hated not knowing already. Vipèrine was an incarnation, Paul had said, so someone long since dead. An actor from the days of Molière? A troubadour perhaps? A magician? Clearly a man fond of extravagant dress in the manner of Oscar Wilde, whom she had not been permitted to mention in polite conversation in Mill Valley, or in her new uncle’s parlor, for that matter.

“He was Jeanne d’Arc’s first lieutenant, when she fought her holy war to unite France,” Casimir said.

“With a blue beard?” It seemed too ludicrous—popinjays preening and strutting on the battlefield, leading a holy crusade with Jeanne d’Arc. Then Theo remembered some of the fantastical armor she had seen in museums, the helmets crowned with plumes, a boar’s head or a raven’s wings. Medieval aristocrats dressed richly for war, as they dressed richly for everything else. Show seemed even more important than skill—but they skewered their enemies nonetheless. Still, a blue beard did not conjure wealth or daring but eccentricity.

“The color of the beard may be totally apocryphal,” Paul replied. “After they burned Jeanne at the stake, Gilles de Rais became the most notorious murderer in French history.”

“He was particularly fond of disemboweling,” Averill murmured, as if sharing a secret.

“Like Jack the Ripper?” Theo suppressed a shudder at the thought of the killer who had terrorized London a decade ago. “Gilles de Rais murdered women?”

Averill looked at her askance, suddenly uneasy. “No. Children.”

“Innocent children!” Heads turned at her outburst, but for once Theo didn’t mind being the brash American.

Casimir gave a Gallic shrug, apologetic, bemused. “Only true innocence would satisfy.”

“And he’s famous?” Anger and horror ruled, despite her best effort to regain a blasé façade.

Casimir offered a placating smile. “Infamous.”

SNEAK PEEK:

A horrible scream rent the air, stilling Hera in the middle of the dirt pathway. Before she could move forward, another piercing scream followed on the heels of the first. This time, she knew the voice as it begged their father to stop.

Ignoring her instincts to run in the opposite direction, to find her mother, she ran to the great tree that grew next to her home. She clambered up the tree, her skin scraping on the bark as her limbs climbed from memory.

When she reached the branch that overlooked the window near the hearth, she looked into the house, squinting in the dim light of morning. As she leaned forward, she lost her grip on the branch and barely caught herself. Steadying her hold, Hera held her breath and watched for movement.

She could see a hand, blood streaming from it, grapple with the edge of the window. Black hair and a tear-streaked face entered her view as her sister pulled herself up.

Persephone.

Catching a glimpse of her in the tree, Persephone found her gaze and mouthed, “Run.”

Hera’s heart raced. Run? Run where? To whom? How could she run when something was so, so wrong?

Her sister, her serious and beautiful sister, slumped forward, unconscious. The slight movement of her hair against her mouth from her shallow breaths was the only indication that she was still alive at all.

The fear that crowded her mind was intense, and Hera began to tremble, nearly losing her grip again. All she could see was Persephone not moving and covered in blood. Suddenly, a thump and several screams rang in her ears. Screams she knew would haunt all her days. High screams. Young screams. And deep, wordless shouts of a man’s rage.

It was the silence that followed that punched her into action.

Turning, she scrambled down the tree and ran to the wheat fields where she had left her mother chatting. Her feet pounded the earth as she ran the fastest she’d ever moved, tripping over vines in her haste. She ignored the pain of the rocks digging into her flesh, desperate to get to her mother.

Before she could reach Mother at the end of the path, a large figure emerged from the line of trees ahead of her. A chill ran up Hera’s spine, and she dug her heels into the dirt, pivoting to hide behind a fallen log as she watched her father step out into the road. Her thoughts raced— how had he gotten to the road before her?

Father raised his hand, revealing in his grip a knife dripping with blood. She knew at that moment her sisters were dead.

He rotated slowly, his eyes scanning the tree line.

“Hera, Hera, Hera,” he called out in a sing-song voice. “I saw you running, dearest. I know you are here. Come on out and talk to me.”

Her stomach dropped through to the earth below at his bold lie. She knew her father did not want to talk.

Crouching, she quietly moved to the end of the log, keeping herself as covered as possible by the bracken around her, and the road in sight. Father was on one end and her mother, farther down in the opposite direction. Could Mother see him yet? Would she look over and see Father in this mad state?

Hera knew she was taking a risk getting her mother’s attention, but she had to do something before Father found her.

She backed deeper into the woods, careful not to step on fallen leaves and twigs. Father paced the road, knife still in hand. If she could get closer to her mother…

Snap.

Dread struck her chest as her father whirled toward the sound with stunning speed, and Hera’s heart raced. She’d been able to get closer to her mother by creeping through the undergrowth, but had she gotten close enough?

It would have to do. As her father started in her direction, Hera burst out into the road.

“Mother!” she cried out, straightening and preparing to run to her. Her mother turned abruptly, her smile faltering as she caught sight of the murderous presence behind Hera.

In a split second, her mother disappeared, only to reappear beside her. Stunned, Hera faltered and blinked at the empty space where her mother had been as she pushed Hera behind her. She fell to her hands and knees as her mother widened her stance, standing like a wall between Hera and her father.

Her mind spun. Her mother’s speed. Her father’s rampage. The sight of her sister’s bloody hand and the sound of their screams. Hera was confused by all of it.

“You swore they were human,” he growled.

Human? Of course, they were human. What else could they be? Was there something about her parents that she and her sisters had not known?

C.D. Britt began her writing journey when her husband told her she needed to use her excessive imagination to write stories as opposed to creating a daily narrative for him. Ever since she penned her first words, life has been a lot more peaceful for him.

She currently resides in Texas where she has yet to adapt to the heat. Her husband thrives in it, so unfortunately, they will not be relocating to colder climates anytime soon.

Their two young children would honestly complain either way.

When she is not in her writing cave (hiding from the sun), she enjoys ignoring the world as much as her children will allow with a good book, music, and vast amounts of coffee (until it’s time for wine).

C.D. Britt is the author of Shadows and Vines and the upcoming book, Sirens and Leviathans.

Both books are part of the Reign of Goddesses series.

When a member of an exclusive book club is checked out, spunky librarian Trudell Becket must sort fact from fiction to solve the murder.

The Cypress Arete Society is one of the town’s oldest and most exclusive clubs. When assistant librarian Trudell Becket is invited to speak to the group about the library, its modernization, and her efforts to bring printed books to the reading public, her friend Flossie invites herself along. Flossie has been on the book club’s waiting list for five years, and she’s determined to find out why she’s never received an invitation to join.

But not long after Tru and Flossie arrive for the meeting, they’re shocked to find the club’s president, Rebecca White, dead in the kitchen. Rebecca was a former TV actress and local celebrity, but was not known for being patient or pleasant. She’d been particularly unkind to the book club’s host for the evening, who also happens to be the mother of Detective Jace Bailey, Tru’s boyfriend. And Rebecca had made it clear that she didn’t think Flossie was book club material.

With her boyfriend and one of her best friends wrapped up in a murder, Tru has to work fast to figure out who cut Rebecca’s story short before the killer takes another victim out of circulation....

A BOOK CLUB TO DIE FOR EXCERPT

Librarians are keepers of knowledge, caretakers of truth, and sowers of wisdom. Many of us rush out to share the world with our communities with the enthusiasm of a child who has suddenly mastered a new skill. We want people to know, to know…well, everything.

This is our mission. This is our passion.

We are the bringers.

We are the beacons cutting through the darkest of nights.

I should be thrilled to be able to provide this service to a local book club that calling itself the Arete Society. So why did I have this sudden desire to turn around, march back to my car, and drive home as fast as my old Camry would take me?

I’d been asked to give a presentation. I’d been tasked to share my knowledge of books and my experiences working at the library with a group of ladies who love books as much as I do. I lived for moments like this.

Didn’t I?

Usually, yes.

But.

Not.

Tonight.

“Trudell Becket, what’s got you dragging your feet like this?” Flossie Finnegan-Baker turned her wheelchair toward me. “I do believe a cornucopia of slugs just passed us.”

“Cornucopia? Of slugs?” I asked. That couldn’t be right. But before she could explain that a group of slugs was indeed called a cornucopia, I said, “Never mind.” Flossie was rarely wrong when it came to grammar and etymology. Besides, slugs weren’t important. “This,” I said. “This is a mistake.” I felt the truth of it like a stone in my gut. I stood in the middle of the long, winding sidewalk leading up to Hazel Bailey’s front porch and scrunched my eyes closed. “I shouldn’t be here.”

“You’re suffering from a case of the jitters.” My friend touched my hand. I looked at her, and she smiled encouragingly at me. Flossie had dressed for the book club meeting in muted shades of turquoise and tan. The colors spiraled together on her long, homemade tie-dyed dress, but it was quite a shift from the bright (and often) clashing colors she usually wore. She’d attached a large golden pin in the shape of Edgar Allen Poe’s face to the collar of the thick white button-up sweater she’d worn over her dress. “Honey, even I get the jitters every time I do something new. Everyone does. That’s why you brought me. To have your back. And I do. I’ve got your back. And you’ve got this. Let’s go.”

Our host lived at the edge of town in the middle of a forest of cypress trees that gave the town its name. The cypress’s silvery trunks stood tall and straight, like the spines of books on a shelf, gleaming in the fading embers of the sunset.

Books were the reason I’d been asked to speak to the Arete Society. And those same books were the reason I couldn’t go through with it.
