Cowboys and Chaos by Elizabeth Pantley

This is no ordinary book club! When the group chooses a book, they are whisked away from reality to find themselves totally immersed in the story. The characters, the setting, and the murder all come to life. In order to exit the book, they’ll need to solve the mystery and reach The End.

This time, the club chooses a mystery that takes place in a quaint western town – in the old Wild West. That sounds like great fun, until they arrive in the dusty old town in the Arizona desert, among cowboys and saloons. They discover that the outhouse isn’t the worse thing about this trip.

The good news is that Paige, Glo, Zell, Frank, and the other members of the club discover plenty of surprises here, and they have a great time visiting a piece of history. They’ll get to live through many exciting moments as they unravel this cozy mystery story

Read an excerpt from Chapter 2 of Cowboys and Chaos:

“Hey,” said Forrest. “Who’s that guy in the backyard?”

Everyone shuffled over to the window. A man was roaming around the property with what appeared to be a metal detector in his hands.

He removed his brown fedora, and his wild brown hair joined his golden scarf to blow wildly in the wind. He methodically ran the device back and forth over the lawn. Every few minutes he would stop and kneel on the grass, leaving wet spots on the knees of his khaki cargo pants. He’d put his ear to the ground, then pop up with a gleeful look on his face and continue scanning the lawn. He reached into one of the pockets of his brown safari jacket and pulled out a pair of binoculars. He aimed them around the yard and then up into the sky.

I opened the back door and stepped outside.

“Hello? Excuse me?” I called. “Can I help you?”

The man walked briskly over to us. He thrust out his hand toward me. “Dr. Atticus Papadopoulos. A pleasure.”

“Paige Erickson. Nice to meet you.” Even in shock, my manners prevailed.

The group had followed me outside and were standing in a circle gawking at him. The man put down his device and efficiently went from person to person. He reached out and shook each person’s hand. He looked each one in the eye and listened intently to their name as if he were memorizing it. He even reached down and shook Frank’s paw.

Frank looked him up and down and examined his archaeological professor-like outfit. “Hello Dr. Jones. Welcome to the Snapdragon Inn.”

“Ah! Wonderful, wonderful. The cat speaks! Marvelous!” He clapped his hands. “Actually, it’s Dr. Papadopoulos, but you can call me Atticus,” he said, totally missing Frank’s reference to Dr. Indiana Jones from Raiders of the Lost Ark. “Your ability to communicate is one more sign that the crossover exists at this point! Brilliant, absolutely brilliant!”

When he completed the circle, he verified my suspicion that he’d been memorizing our names by pointing at each person in turn. “Paige. Glo. Zell, Sebastian, Vee, Moonbeam, Forrest. And of course, the fascinating, remarkable Frank.”

The cat stood taller, and I could just about see his head growing in size. Exactly what we needed, a person to boost Frank’s already bursting ego.

“Sooo, Atticus. What are you doing here?” Glo asked as she came to stand beside me, hands on her hips, looking the stranger in the eye.

“Yeah,” said Zell, charging to the front of the group and standing nearly toe to toe with him. She looked up into his face, her eyes narrowed in suspicion. With her diminutive size and cotton ball-like hair she looked anything but intimidating. “And what’s with the metal detector? Looking for buried treasure?”

“Ah, good question, Zell. This is not a meager metal detector. It alerts me to points of extraterrestrial energy.”

“Are you a kook, then?”

Atticus threw back his head and laughed, his wild hair flopping back and forth with the movement. “No, madam, not a kook. I am a doctor of astrobiology; my major area of interest is extraterrestrial technology and travel.”

“What the heck is astrobiology?” Zell squinted her eyes at him.

“A woman with a curious mind. I like it.” He nodded in approval.

I glanced at Glo and rolled my eyes. Great. Now another ego being stroked. Zell and Frank were already impossible to live with, this would boost their annoy-ability level.

“Astrobiology is the academic field that studies the origins of life on our Earth and the existence of life elsewhere in our universe. The study of extraterrestrial visits is my main area of interest. Your inn happens to be at a key crossover point for a confluence of energy.” He put his hands in his pockets and leaned back on his heels looking pleased with his discovery.

Zell had an abnormally studious look on her face. “What do you mean by a confluence of energy, Doctor?”

Glo and I chuckled, since Zell’s normal response to him would have been, “Huh? Whatcha talking about?”

“Excellent question, again.” He pointed at Zell with a snappy movement. “Energy encircles our planet both horizontally and vertically.” His arms flailed about as he demonstrated the circles, then he crossed his arms, one atop the other. “At certain points the lines join and there is a high level of intra-space energy. These locations are an ideal landing spot for extraterrestrials, or for the creation of a time/space portal. This inn sits directly atop a high energy confluence crossover point.”

“Well, that’s not a surprise,” said Zell. “We do have an enchanted library with magical books that take us inside them for adventures.”

“Zell!” We all yelled as one.

“Yes! I knew it!” Atticus pumped his arm. “I want in. Can you take me on one of your adventures?”

“You’re going to do what I tell you to do, or else—”
“Or else you’ll kill me like your father did my best friend.” She had thrown it out there and everything I had suspected was now confirmed. There was venom laced within the smoky sensuousness of her voice, especially when she mentioned him.
“You need to let that go,” I warned, more for her protection than anything else. She couldn’t go around throwing things like that out there or else someone would connect the pieces and she would experience a death far worse than Donnatella had.
“I’ll never let that go,” she told me while pushing forcefully at my chest.
“You must,” I repeated.
“Fuck you,” she said, her voice now completely filled with pain that the man who’d sired me had caused her. “You don’t get to tell me what to do. You just make sure that you keep your big mouth—”
Knowing where she was headed with it, I grabbed her by the throat and fused my mouth to hers. I had never wanted to kiss her in all the time that I had known her in the past, but as soon as our lips touched, I never wanted to stop. I quickly neutralized her, my tongue tangling with hers in some forbidden dance. She was my father’s mistress, and a witness that should’ve been snuffed out a decade earlier, yet I couldn’t stop kissing her as she held my very life in her hands when it should’ve been the other way around.
She struggled against me, as I suspected she would, until she didn’t. The lack of resistance elicited the same response that being doused with a bucket of ice water would, and I slowly released her from my grasp. When I stepped back, I had miscalculated her mood because she slapped me so quickly and with such force that the entire side of my face stung.
“I’m not leaving until I get what I came here for. Get in my way, Nazario, and it’ll be your last fatal mistake. I am not about taking prisoners. I am collecting body bags.”
I shook my head to not only stop the ringing inside of it from her blow, but the words she spoke. Even back in school, she’d been the soft spoken type. The night in New York City, she’d been scared but resembled the girl I had once known. The vixen in front of me was like something out of my wet dreams. She was arrogant, definitely not a damsel in distress, and someone I would enjoy fucking into submission over and over again. I couldn’t do any of those things, however, because she was going to get her ass killed if she didn’t drop this vendetta and leave town immediately.
“You’re not the only one that wants him dead,” I stated, causing her to look up at me and deadpan.
“Yes, but unlike others, I don’t lack the balls to get the job done.”
I scrubbed my hands down my face. “It’s too dangerous.”
“Then leave the heavy lifting to those capable of doing it, Darling.”

Adrien is a brand new Digital Nomad just touching down in Thailand for his first remote-work adventure.

Adrien was catatonic when the plane bumped down to earth and jolted him awake. His glasses slipped off his face, and he managed to catch them by a temple tip just before they were lost to the narrow space under the seat. His long legs were wedged in an excruciating position that was now shooting pins and needles up and down his calves. It was a miracle that he’d managed to pass out.

He stepped off the plane and the blasting heat surprised him, snatching his breath. The feeling was akin to standing next to a searing-hot open oven. He walked onto the tarmac of the Panat Buri airport and could feel the heat radiating from underneath his feet. It was such that as he looked up, the terminal building shimmered in his gaze, like in those Western movies.

Where the fuck have I taken myself to? Adrien thought, as sweat immediately started trickling between his shoulder blades, chafing between his back and the heavy tech pack he was carrying.

At Arrivals, he navigated a throng of people all advertising hotels, cars, beaches, money changers, SIM cards. He was much taller than most of them, so he could keep his eyes on the prize: the exit. These hustlers were shouting in basic English, like “Hello madam!” or “Beautiful hotel,” but he noticed that they addressed him in what he presumed must be Thai. Oh, no. Here we go. He had been warned of this. Adrien had never even been to Asia, but others identified him as Asian almost everywhere he went. His parents were originally from Vietnam, but he’d been raised entirely as Canadian. He didn’t speak Vietnamese—he could understand a few expressions—and the closest thing he’d ever experienced of Asia was his mum’s delicious home-cooking. But that was it. And now everyone here would presume him to be “Asian.” On second thought though, this time he was being considered “one of them” instead of “other.” He was intrigued to see how this would pan out. But not now. Now he just needed to get out of this crush.

Once out of the small airport, he was bundled into a crammed minivan packed with other tourists. One of the seats was stacked with a teetering pile of luggage held together by a rope. Of course, Adrien was given the seat right next to that one. He looked up at the luggage stack, worried. But then again it turned out to be a plus, as his jet-lagged body slumped against it and he fell asleep for a few more hours. He didn’t even notice when the minivan boarded the ferry.

By the time they arrived on Koh Tanu, it was already night. His first impression of the island was of a dusty, dark road dotted with lights here and there, and that there were crazy scooter drivers. He still had no feeling that he was on an island, by the sea. He got dropped off at a little gate and used the code he’d been given to unlock it. Then he made his way to the bungalow assigned to him, one of about a dozen, strung out along a patchy grass field. A cute welcome package was waiting for him inside: water, a guide to the island, a little message giving him directions to the coworking space, the TribeHut.

Adrien gulped down one whole bottle of water, put the other one in the still-warm fridge, then threw himself on the bed. Sleep took him deeply, and it was only 7:00 p.m.

Adrien was swimming, swimming through a treacle-thick substance, bags, people and debris bumping into him. Then one particularly big piece of debris—he couldn’t tell what—bowled into him and overwhelmed him, sending him into the gelatinous mess below. He couldn’t breathe…he couldn’t— He woke with a start. His body was completely wet from sweating, the bedding drenched. Of course, he had forgotten to turn on the air conditioner and the windows were closed. Damn. It was 1:15 a.m.

With the AC now running, he took a trip to the bathroom. Splashing his face with lukewarm water was a nice relief. He threw himself back onto the bed, hopeful sleep would take him as swiftly as before. No joy. He tossed and turned, then started playing on his phone. Candy Crush was sure to lull him to blessed sleep. But again, no joy. More water, more peeing, more tossing and turning. This is annoying.

He got up and peeked out the window. The street was identical to how it looked at 7:00 p.m. Only the very occasional scooter passing by. All was quiet. Then he saw one of those funny contraptions…he thought they were called tak-tak or something like that. It was a scooter with some sort of sidecar turned into a minicart/carriage, with a little roof, used as a cheap taxi. It was pulling in outside the bungalows, carrying two passengers. A woman and a man stumbled out, obviously intoxicated. She was an attractive young woman with long dark hair, and he was tall, older than her. He looked Scandinavian or similar. He paid the driver with some difficulty while the woman was pawing at him, hanging on to him as if she might fall. He turned and kissed her passionately—even from here Adrien could see his tongue glinting—while the driver counted the money. Then they continued their stumbled walk into the resort. They were obviously TribeHutters, or at least one of them was, as this resort was reserved for them.

Adrien went to the bed and sat upright, got his Mac out. He checked the usual news feeds. It was still afternoon for Americans on the West Coast. He read an article about two guys whose app was taking the tech world by storm. Their faces looked idiotic.

As a child in the 1950s, Kevin O’Connor knew his house was different than those of his friends. A stately, three-story, nineteenth century Victorian. His bed tucked next to a stage in a former ballroom. His uncle and aunt lived with their three daughters on the floor below. A large electric organ stood stately in a corner of the first-floor mortuary business. Stacked caskets and an embalming room filled the basement.

Nobody had a house like his.

Set from the 1920s to ‘80s, Two Floors Above Grief is full of fascinating details and anecdotes about his upbringing as a funeral home child, brought to vivid life through a compelling collection of letters written by various family members who lived and worked together at the O’Connor Funeral Home in Elgin, Illinois. Blending the twenty-four-hour business of death and its constantly ringing phone with joy experienced through music, radios, pets, backyard basketball games, co-parenting, faith, and celebrations, O’Connor offers a reflective tale affirming the love of family and embracing life.

Kevin O’Connor enjoys chronicling the stories of families and friends through tracing genealogical histories and writing. His prior writing includes a dissertation, personal letters, articles, anthologies, and presentations delivered at conferences, seminars, and webinars. He brings people together personally and professionally. Collaborating with friends and relatives, he plans family and class reunions.

He sings and performs in theaters and is active with SMART Ride, a bicycling group that rides annually from Miami to Key West, raising funds for HIV awareness, treatment, and education. From USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author comes a special edition of a heartfelt second-chance romance featuring a swoon-worthy man, a single-mom, and an adorably cute little girl.

I loved this one by Laramie Briscoe. Action packed and a strong damsel in distress. This was a page turner and had such a great sigh-worthy ending. Definitely recommend! - USA Today bestselling author Susan Stoker

This edition of Trick features Trick, Unwrap Me, the Trick & Hadley text messages, and the first chapter of their son, Declan's book.

A forced sentence leads to a reckless passion…

Hadley

When my husband walked out on me over a year ago, it devastated me. When the divorce papers came, it wrecked me. When we had to sell our house, it broke me.

But then he moved in with his new flavor of the month and told our daughter his new woman wasn’t into children. That pissed me off.

Now Riley feels abandoned, and I can’t make it better; no matter how hard I try. I’m desperate to help her adjust to the loss of a male figure in her life. The Companion Program that matches adults up with children who have loneliness and abandonment issues is my last hope.

The counselors tell me he’s doing community service hours, and I ask to sit in on his meetings with Riley. The minute I see him astride the matte black Harley, I know neither my nor Riley’s life will ever be the same again.

Trick

Community Service. Two words I should be thankful for, but I’m not. I resent the hours away from building my business. The two previous kids I'd been paired up with didn’t work out because their mothers were more interested in getting in my bed than making sure their child was taken care of. This next match with a little girl is my last hope. Unless this kid works out, I’m destined to serve time.

When they push her into the room wearing pink converse with a black dress, her crazy curls barely held back by the barrette in her hair, and studious glasses on her face, I can tell she’s scared - of new people, of change, of being pushed aside. Something inside of me breaks, and I want this girl to feel wanted again.

What I’m unprepared for is meeting her mom. The second our hands touch, I see fireworks, bright lights, and a picture of the future I could one day have. The future I’ve never allowed myself to wish for.

Community service becomes more than a chore, more than the precious hours I have to give up. In the months that follow, I realize Riley and Hadley are just like me; they’ve been abandoned, left behind by the world, forgotten by those who should love them.

Thanks to the one last hope in both our lives - we found the light in the darkness we’d been searching for.

Unwrap Me

Life gets a little crazy sometimes, especially when you've got two kids, two businesses, and you are two parents who are very hands on.

But when Trick's gift doesn't get here in time for Christmas, I have to improvise. They say variety is the spice of life. To keep my man happy, marriage on track, and our sanity, I decide to give him what he craves most in the world.

Me. With a bow on top.

Patrick Tennyson won't know what hit him. It'll be the surprise of his life, and all he'll have to do is follow the instructions.

Trick,

Your gift got a little delayed. Instead, I've improvised. Follow the snowflakes to the bedroom. When you get here, unwrap me, and I'm yours.

Hadley

Christmas is about to get so hot we'll be melting the eight inches expected tonight. ;)
