The Phantom Glare of Day by M. Laszlo Book Tour!

Historical (Metaphysical) Fiction / Coming of Age Fiction

In this trio of novellas, three game young ladies enter into dangerous liaisons that

test each one’s limits and force them to confront the most heartrending issues

facing society in the early twentieth century. The Phantom Glare of Day tells of

Sophie, a young lady who has lived a sheltered life and consequently has no

idea how cruel public-school bullying can be. When she meets Jarvis, a young

man obsessed with avenging all those students who delight in his daily debasement,

she resolves to intervene before tragedy unfolds. Mouvements Perpétuels tells of

Cäcilia, a young lady shunned by her birth father. She longs for the approval of an

older man, so when her ice-skating instructor attempts to take advantage of her,

she cannot resist. Not a month later, she realizes that she is pregnant and must

decide whether or not to get an abortion. Passion Bearer tells of Manon, a young

lady who falls in love with a beautiful actress after taking a post as a script girl for

a film company—and is subsequently confronted with the pettiest kinds of homophobia.

London, 29 September, 1917.

Sophie paused beside a stock-brick building, and she listened for the unnerving

rumble of an airship’s engine car. How long has it been since the last bombardment?

Sometime before, as she had stood in this very spot, she had heard the

Zeppelin clearly enough.

At that point, a Royal-Navy carbide flare had streaked heavenward. Then,

from the neighboring rooftops, fifty or more pom-pom guns had opened

fire–and the night air had filled with the odor of something like petroleum coke.

Yes, I remember. Now she braced herself for a salvo of fire.

No deafening tumult rang out. Neither did any sickening, stenchful fumes

envelope her person.

No, it’s just my nerves. She glanced at the sky, and she whispered a simple

prayer of thanksgiving.

From around the corner, an omnibus approached.

She climbed aboard and rode the way to Mayfair Tearoom.

The establishment had never looked so inviting as it did that night. By now,

the proprietress had decorated the tables with Michaelmas daisies the color of

amethyst, and she had adorned the china cabinet with ornamental cabbage.

Moreover, how appetizing the scent of the fresh Eccles cakes.

The tearoom had attracted quite a crowd, too, the young ladies all decked out in

silken gowns.

I wonder why. Sophie removed her coat, and she suddenly felt underdressed—for

she had not worn anything too fancy that evening, just a puffed blouse and a

fluted skirt. At once, she sat down at one of the last available dinette tables.

An eclipse of moths fluttered through the transom, meanwhile, and even they

looked better than she did. What beauty the creatures’ wings—a fine royal purple.

Don’t look at them. Alas, when she turned her attention to the doorsill, a dull

ache radiated up and down her left arm.

Not a moment later, a tall, gaunt lad, his eyes a shade of whiskey brown,

entered the tearoom.

For a time, he glared at the patrons—as if at any moment he might remove a

musketoon from beneath his frock coat and shoot everyone.

M. Laszlo is the pseudonym of a reclusive author living in Bath, Ohio. According

to rumor, he based the pen name on the name of the Paul Henreid character in

Casablanca, Victor Laszlo.

M. Laszlo has lived and worked all over the world, and he has kept exhaustive

journals and idea books corresponding to each location and post.

It is said that the maniacal habit began in childhood during summer vacations—

when his family began renting out Robert Lowell’s family home in Castine, Maine.

The habit continued in 1985 when, as an adolescent, he spent the summer in

London, England. In recent years, he revisited that journal/idea book and based his

first work, The Phantom Glare of Day, on the characters, topics, and themes

contained within the youthful writings. In crafting the narrative arcs, he decided

to divide the work into three interrelated novellas and to set each one in the WW-I

era so as to make the work as timeless as possible.

M. Laszlo has lived and worked in New York City, East Jerusalem, and several other

cities around the world. While living in the Middle East, he worked for Harvard

University’s Semitic Museum. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Hiram

College in Hiram, Ohio and an M.F.A. in poetry from Sarah Lawrence College in

Bronxville, New York.

His next work is forthcoming from SparkPress in 2024. There are whispers that the

work purports to be a genuine attempt at positing an explanation for the riddle

of the universe and is based on journals and idea books made while completing

his M.F.A at Sarah Lawrence College.

Homicide Hérault by Bluette Matthey Book Tour!

Homicide Herault by Bluette Matthey Banner

February 6 - March 3, 2023 Virtual Book Tour

Homicide Herault by Bluette Matthey

Veteran trekker Hardy Durkin takes his first bike tour group to Béziers, in the South of France, for what is expected to be relaxing, uneventful bicycling in the Hérault region. This notion is kicked to the curb when a double cold-case with present-day repercussions is discovered on one of the group’s outings. Hardy becomes embroiled in another homicide when he is present at a murder that takes place during an innocent flamenco performance that is anything but.

The bottom line: murder and intrigue follow Hardy Durkin like a shadow, even in the sunny, laid-back South of France, but this time his wheel of fortune veers uncomfortably off the rails in Homicide Hérault.

Read an excerpt:

There was a brief lull in the questions, then Delia asked what everyone else was thinking. “Who are you, Hardy Durkin? You’ve got this Clotiers guy on speed dial. You’re not in the least bit flustered about finding two dead soldiers on a god-forsaken riverbank in the South of France, you seem to be evading the police about it… Just who the hell are you?”

A shocked silence was interrupted by Clive. “I can answer that,” he said. He turned to Hardy almost apologetically. “My cousin was on your trek in the Black Forest.” To his fellow cyclists he explained, “Hardy is exactly who he seems to be. He has a trek business for points in Europe.” He paused, then added, “He also has an unusual skill set from his military training and for reasons unknown to anyone has a knack for wading into mysteries, stumbling upon dead bodies, and bringing criminals to justice.”

Bachelor Beast
Grace Goodwin

(Interstellar Brides Program: The Beasts, #1)
Publication date: May 14th 2020
Genres: Adult, Romance, Science Fiction

Warlord Wulf thought nothing could be worse than being tortured and contaminated by the Hive. That was before he’s ordered to transport to Earth and represent The Colony in an unfamiliar horror… a human reality show. The Bachelor Beast is the hottest new program on Earth, but being set up with two dozen clingy females is not his idea of a good time. When his Beast refuses to show the slightest interest in any of the show’s potential mates, he knows he must choose one or die due to his raging mating fever.

His Beast prefers execution to claiming anyone but his true mate. Wulf is resigned to his fate, a one-way trip to Atlan, a prison cell and execution. It is the only honorable thing left to do.

Until one glance, one sweet, feminine scent lingering in the air and his beast rages for a female who is not supposed to be his.

But try telling that to his Beast when his entire body transforms on live television and one simple word thunders from his lips…MINE.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo / Google Play

I took a step closer, careful of the thick cords across the floor while remaining behind the cameras. Wulf’s hands gripped the arms of his chair as if they were keeping him from flying away. Maybe because I looked at people’s faces all the time, I could often tell what they were feeling, or maybe Wulf was equally bad at hiding his emotions.

I’d lusted after him. Drooled over him. Dreamed of him. I hadn’t really thought of the toll this show was taking on him. Had he truly volunteered for this? He looked about as enthused to be sitting here as someone in the waiting room before a colonoscopy. Was what Chet had said true? Would he die if he didn’t pick Genevieve or Willow? Was he really going to be executed?

Was his life so bad that he’d choose execution over the women? Not once in the three weeks of taping had Chet asked him what he was looking for in a mate. Everyone assumed, including me, that Wulf was whittling down the ladies to his favorites, to the one he’d give his cuffs.

Now I wasn’t so sure.

The show dragged on, as they had a one-hour time slot, with plenty of commercial breaks to heighten the anticipation. I was ready to scream by the time Chet stopped his inane questions and finally got down to the business at hand. The choice. Wulf’s choice.

“It’s finally time. Genevieve, Willow…” Chet spoke and the ladies took a step closer. The lights dimmed except for a focused beam on the gleaming cuffs in the glass case.

I moved around another camera to be as close as I could but remain behind the scenes. We were all in shadows, the large set being lit only by the stage.

“Warlord Wulf. It is time.”

Wulf slowly rose to his feet.

“Who is going to be your bride? Genevieve or Willow?”

Mary, a wardrobe tech, moved to stand beside me but bumped my shoulder, pushing me forward. I gasped and stopped my forward momentum out of sheer panic. I didn’t get in the way, but my heart was in my throat. Mary’s hand settled on my shoulder, and she mouthed a sorry along with a small smile.

I looked back at the stage, at what I’d been waiting for since the first episode. But Wulf wasn’t looking at the final contestants. He was looking at me.

Me.

Oh. My. God.

Had I gotten in front of the camera? Had I distracted Wulf at a time like this? Oh shit, I was going to be fired. I took a small step back, but Mary stopped me.

Genevieve turned to look my way. Willow narrowed her eyes in my direction as if trying to peer into the shadows. Chet even broke his perfect facade to glance past the cameras.

At me. Although I wasn’t sure if they could actually see me, or if they were trying to determine what held Wulf’s attention.

A rumbling came from the stage. Chet, Genevieve and Willow whipped their gazes back toward Wulf. Then came a growl that practically made the floor shake. I felt it deep inside me and I gasped.

Wulf’s eyes were still on me, and I couldn’t look away. Not when he was growing. Actually growing. The audience gasped, murmured. Backstage whispering kicked in. Chet stepped back. Genevieve took hold of Willow’s hand, and their eyes widened.

The tuxedo jacket ripped at the seams on Wulf’s body. He wasn’t seven feet of alien any longer. He had to be eight feet and all beast. Angled features, ragged breathing, taut muscles. A gaze laser sharp. Intense, as if he was ready to pounce.

“Mine.” The one word was low and deep, and it silenced the entire set.

Extract from Chapter One.
The residents of Bayeux are attending Easter Mass, which takes hours. Fourteen-year-old Poppa is bored, and her mind wanders. Then something happens that breaks the tranquillity of the sermon…

The celebration of the Easter feast – the most important event of the Christian year – was always a solemn occasion, as befitted Christ’s death and resurrection. She knew that. But after the third of the nine Kyrie Eleisons that opened the mass, Poppa’s thoughts had begun to drift. Like everyone else, she recited and intoned when prompted, but she much rather wanted to meet with her friend, Landina, by the water mill on the edge of town. The stream and the meadows were like heaven, unlike this crowded church where not even the cloying incense could not hide the stench of so many unwashed bodies.

Where were they, anyway? She cast glances to either side of her, but saw neither her friends nor their father, the miller. Perhaps they were behind her. Briefly, she considered turning around, but Father’s rigid stance changed her mind. Huffing, she shifted her weight to the other foot and winced at the tingling in her toes.

“Shh!” Father sent her a dark glance through lowered eyelids. He took sermons seriously, and his strong faith was the main reason she studied boring Latin with Father Peter.

Poppa knew Father was in part fulfilling Mother’s dying wish by providing her with a religious education. Mother had wanted for her to join a convent. But Poppa also knew that she – as the only daughter of Count Bérengar of Bayeux – would soon become an important marriage pawn. The notion filled her with trepidation. On her fourteenth birthday, Father broached the subject for the first time, indicating there were several potential suitors for her in mind. She’d been praying Ranulf was amongst them, but his family were far below her own in station. Her hopes faltered, even though Father had promised to heed her opinion.

He indulged her, that was all. Then he would follow through with his plans. Much to her annoyance, he’d mentioned names of several men at the Frankish court. Men or boys of noble birth, all of them. Resigned, Poppa’s heart had sunk.

Her childish snort at his pledge was drowned out by a loud “Alleluia!” from the gathered crowd. Swiftly, she followed Father’s lead and crossed herself, else he would chide her for her straying mind.

Biting her lip, Poppa focused on Father Peter’s ramblings, trying to identify words she recognised, and their meaning. It whiled away the time. Surreptitiously, she changed her weight again.

Moments later, as everyone watched the priest who had paused in his sermon, his head cocked to the side like a bird’s, a sound of raised voices reached her ears. It came from outside. Shouts, which grew steadily closer. But with most of the inhabitants of Bayeux attending church, what could make such a growing noise?

Father exchanged glances with several men in the crowd. An imperceptible nod from him, and they slowly edged closer to him. He spoke in a hushed tone, but Poppa could not hear his words.

More urgent shouting reached Poppa’s ears, followed by screams that pierced the silence.

Dan has sacrificed everything, including his soul, for this covert op. All that’s left is Laura.

He prays every night that when this nightmare is over she’ll be waiting for him, and she’ll help him get through the guilt that will plague him for the rest of his life.

Then Laura is ripped from her safe world and thrust into his. Now she’s a part of the darkness and despair. He must say things to her, and do things to her, that she might never forgive him for.

And when the carefully scheduled mission goes terribly wrong and she’s stolen away from him, he must track her down on the other side of the world before she disappears forever into the shadows.

Goodreads / Amazon

“Laura, I am so sorry you got mixed up with this. You know I’m undercover, right? Please tell me you don’t think I’d actually do this kind of thing?”
“No, Dan!”

He let out a relieved breath.

“But I can’t let you go, and I can’t treat you any different from the others.”

“Dan, please, get me out of here!” She was shaking. She’d wanted to be brave, but her fear was rapidly overtaking her resolve.

“I know you’re scared. But I can’t get you out of here. This place is crawling with guards who are absolutely loyal to DeLeo. They’ll shoot us if they suspect anything. But in a little less than a month there’s going to be an auction, and this will all be over,” he said. “You’ll have to stay until then, but if you don’t ever want to see me again after that, I understand.”

“Don’t say that! You can’t do anything that would make me hate you!”

“Laura… you have no idea how bad this is going to get. I’m going to have to punish you harder than I would punish the others, to prove that I’m not affected by your presence here.”

The small hope she’d still carried was crushed. She had no choice but to remain here, and she wept silently as she struggled with the words she needed to say, that he needed to hear.

“If I have to stay,” she stuttered, “then I need you to do whatever it takes to get through this, and I don’t want you to feel guilty about it later. If you have to hurt me, do it.” She couldn’t put any more burden on him than he already bore.

“Laura, you don’t know what I’m going to have to do.”

“It doesn’t matter. I’m giving you consent.”

Hi there! For years, I wrote and hid stories in the computer, convinced that no one would be interested in the twisted musings of my mind. When the internet showed me that there were others who were just as twisted, I decided to come out of the closet.

My men are strong, even when love makes them tender. My women are fierce and independent and will not surrender until they are respected. My stories are about negotiating the dance between the two, until he claims her heart in the end.

Right now, I split my time between being mother, wife, overworked employee, and servent to the cat's every need. Most evenings will find me hiding in my office cave to write, where I only care about my internet signal and the strength of my coffee.
