Hampered by the warring English, his quest growing daily more dangerous, Luciano begins to realise that his own life and that of everyone close to him rests on the knife-edge of success … for only success will permit him to reclaim the Black Madonna and offer his heart to the girl he loves.

Kate and Eden visit Luciano del Santi … trailed by their younger brother who makes an  unexpected discovery

Giacomo beamed.  ‘I tell Signor Luciano you are ’ere. ’E is in ’is workshop but for you ’e will come out.  Scusimomento!’

‘Workshop?’ said Toby, on just the right note of appeal.

Giacomo stopped and regarded the boy with benevolence.

Si.  You ’ave interest?  You like to see?’

‘Well,’ said Toby in the tone of one reluctant to give trouble but willing to be persuaded, ‘it’s just that I’ve never – ow!’

Having discreetly trodden on his brother’s foot, Eden smiled at Giacomo and said, ‘Another time, if Signor del Santi permits.  We’ve no wish to inconvenience him.’

‘Is not inconvenience – is pleasure!’ cried Giacomo, expansively.  ‘Please – you come.  The signor will be so ’appy.  You come.’

There was no help for it.  They went, Toby clattering on in front at Giacomo’s heels.

‘Damn,’ said Eden softly to Kate.  ‘Why didn’t I drop him overboard while I had the chance?’

‘No resolution,’ she replied.  ‘But don’t worry.  You heard what the man said.  The signor will be so ’appy.’

‘You think?’

She rolled expressive eyes and said nothing.

Ahead of them, Giacomo opened a door and embarked on a vivacious flow of Italian which was immediately stemmed by a brief, pungently delivered sentence in the same language.  Kate and Eden exchanged glances and then, arriving in the doorway, looked past Giacomo to the scene within.

His face still marked by fading bruises, Luciano del Santi was in his shirt-sleeves, sitting at a large trestle on which reposed an impressive array of small tools.  His concentrated gaze was wholly taken up with the gleaming object held in one long-fingered hand.  In shape and size it resembled a chalice, being set upon a delicately slender stem; but the bowl was composed of intricately pierced lattice-work … a spider’s web spun in gold.

The clever hands stilled and, without haste, the Italian looked up at his visitors.  The impassive eyes held Kate’s gaze for a couple of seconds and then he said, ‘In a few minutes you will be welcome … but, until then, I would appreciate silence.’  And he turned coolly back to his work.

Somewhere at the back of her mind, Kate discovered the first twinges of respect.  If the lovely thing in his hands was of his own creating, then there was more to this man than malicious wit.  It did not, she told herself firmly, make him any easier to like; and, with equal firmness, squashed the sneaking suspicion that it added another dimension to the signor’s inexplicable fascination.

Toby, meanwhile, had approached the table so stealthily that no one had noticed him doing it. And when Luciano del Santi finally set the piece down, it was Toby said, ‘Did you make all of that?  Yourself, I mean?’

The Italian looked at him thoughtfully. ‘Yes.’

‘How long did it take?’

‘In hours of work?  I don’t know.  It isn’t important.  These things are finished in their own time.’

Toby nodded, apparently understanding this.

‘And is it finished now?’

‘Not quite. There are still some slightly roughened edges here – and here.’  He lifted the goblet for the boy’s inspection and pointed to it in various places.  ‘You see?  These must be smoothed and polished.  And then I shall engrave the base along this curvature here.’

‘And then?’ asked Toby.  ‘What is it?’

‘What does it look like?’

‘A wine-cup.  But you couldn’t drink out of it.  It’s got holes in it.’

Luciano del Santi reached to his left and picked up an object wrapped in a soft cloth. Then, opening it, he placed its contents gently inside the golden web of the chalice.

‘So,’ he said, apparently unaware of the faint breathiness that had suddenly afflicted Kate.  ‘The finest amber … I carved it myself.  And the gold, you see, is no more than a shell.’

For probably the first time in his life, Toby took at least two minutes to decide what to say.  The amber was beautiful and so thin that the light shone through it; and, set in its fragile tracery of gold, it glowed with almost uncanny life.  And Toby, looking at it, was consumed by a sudden thirst for knowledge. Drawing a long breath, he stared the Italian straight in the eye and said, ‘Can … can anyone learn to do that?’

‘No.’ The word was bland and unequivocal.

‘Could I?’

There was a long pause.  Then, ‘If you mean, could you learn to work gold – yes.  Perhaps.  It is a skill and can therefore be taught.  If, however, you are asking if you can become a master … then the answer is no.  Master-goldsmiths are born, not made.  And if you don’t already have the ingredients within you, no one can put them there.’

Again and much to the surprise of Kate and Eden, Toby seemed to accept this without question.  He just nodded slowly and said, ‘Will you teach me?’

Luciano del Santi leaned his elbows on the trestle and regarded Toby steadily over his hands.  ‘No.’

‘Why not?’

‘That’s enough, Toby.’  Eden stepped forward and dropped a hand on his young brother’s shoulder.  ‘Signor del Santi has been more than patient – so just take no for an answer and stop haranguing him.’

Toby shook off Eden’s hand and stood his ground.

‘Why not?’ he said again.

For the first time since they had come in, a vagrant smile touched the sculpted face.

‘Because I don’t know anything about you. In the last five minutes, you’ve decided you want to be a goldsmith.  For all I know to the contrary, yesterday you may have yearned to be a blacksmith and tomorrow, a pastry-cook.  I’m not inclined to waste my time.’

‘All right.’  The boy shoved back an unruly lock of dark brown hair from his face and thought about it.  ‘I suppose that’s fair. But if I prove I really mean it – then will you teach me?’

‘Toby.’ Eden was beginning to see a chasm yawning ahead.  The Italian had been amazingly tolerant so far but it couldn’t last.  ‘Toby … for God’s sake, stop arguing.’

‘I’m not arguing,’ said Toby.  ‘I’m enquiring.’

Kate stared hard at the floor and tried to straighten out her face.

Luciano del Santi startled them all by laughing.

‘I don’t see what’s so funny,’ Toby objected.  ‘I just want to know whether you’ll ever agree to teach me – or whether you’re just making excuses.  Because if you won’t teach me, I’ll just have to find someone who will.’

Something in his voice broke through Kate’s amusement and caused her to unlock her tongue.  She said, ‘Stop and think what you’re saying, Toby.  If you’re serious about this, you’ll need Father’s permission and a formal apprenticeship.  You’d have to live away from home and sign away your life for years to – to someone like Signor del Santi.  It’s not something to be decided on a moment’s impulse.’

‘I don’t care,’ came the stubborn reply. ‘I want to know how to make things like that … and I shan’t change my mind, no matter what you think.’

Giacomo chuckled and said something in his own language.  His master replied with what appeared to be dry humour and then relapsed into silence.  Kate decided that a basic grasp of Italian might come in useful.

‘Very well,’ said Luciano del Santi crisply. ‘I’ll make you no promises.  Perhaps I’ll teach you – perhaps not.  We’ll see.  In the meantime, I’ll allow you the freedom of my workshop.  You may come here when you wish and pick up what knowledge you can by watching.  I am not always here; but my assistant, Gino, will answer your questions.  If you wait for half an hour or so, you can meet him.  But what you will not do is to touch anything at all without either his permission or mine. Break that rule even once and there will be no second chance.  And if, in the end, I refuse to take you as a pupil, you must accept that I mean it and will not change my mind.  Do I make myself quite clear?’

‘Yes.’  Toby flushed and grinned widely.  ‘Yes.  Thank you.’

Laying his fingers on the table-edge, the Italian rose from his stool and replaced his coat with a caution which reminded Kate that the attack had done more than mark his face.  Strangely, she was conscious of a twinge of sympathy that hadn’t been there when Eden had first told her of it.

‘Don’t thank me. Just remember that I’ve promised you nothing.  Yet.  And now, Giacomo will introduce you to Gino when he comes, while I take your brother and sister upstairs for some refreshment.’  And without waiting for a reply, he crossed a little stiffly to Kate’s side and offered his arm.

She took it, felt herself colouring and was annoyed.  It was this, more than anything, that made her say abruptly, ‘Why are you doing this for Toby?’

‘Because he reminds Giacomo of someone.’

Kate shot him a suspicious glance. ‘Who?’

He sighed and, for a moment, she thought he wasn’t going to answer.

Then, ‘Me,’ he said.

Read an excerpt:

“Come not within the measure of my wrath.”
~William Shakespeare

CHAPTER ONE

Sweat gathered under the brim of Kent Davis’s Stetson as he walked the sandy beach along the Bogue Falaya River. He didn’t feel the brisk January breeze or pay attention to the mutterings of the forensic team. The unease burning in his gut shut out all distractions. He rested his hand on his belt, brushing against his Louisiana sheriff’s badge. The rub of metal reminded him of the oath he’d sworn to protect and serve, but on days like this, he hated his job.

Dispatch had initially deemed the early morning call from a frantic jogger a hoax. After an officer confirmed there was a body, Kent arrived at the scene to confront his worst nightmare—another murder. He already had three unsolved deaths weighing heavily on his department. Two high school students and a woman from out of town had died there in a matter of months. City leaders had been breathing down his neck for answers.

Kent studied the black body bag the technicians carried. This was only going to make his job harder.

His crew combed the beach, where receding floodwaters had exposed a young woman’s grave. From the looks of her bleached bones, partially covered in the remnants of a red dress, she’d been there for quite some time. He doubted they’d find anything admissible. There would be trace evidence, but no footprints, no debris, no blood, and no signs of struggle.

He climbed the steep hill from the beach to the parking area, scanning for any clues. Everywhere was a potential crime scene. After years of being in law enforcement, he doubted he could see the world in any other way.

“I don’t like this one bit, Bill,” Kent said, approaching the heavyset coroner waiting by the open doors of his van.

“What’s there to like. We got a dead girl who’s been buried here a long time.” Dr. Bill Broussard removed a pair of black-framed glasses from his egg-shaped head. “You might find a lead in old missing persons reports.”

“I’ll access the St. Tammany Parish database when I get to the station. Until then, she’s a Jane Doe.” Kent eyed the coroner’s van. “How long will it take to know something?”

Bill cleaned his glasses and moved out of the way while a technician slammed the doors closed. He waited until the man climbed into the driver’s side before responding. “You realize workin’ with old bones makes it harder to identify the cause of death. Let me get her to the lab, then we’ll see.”

“I got enough going on with Beau Devereaux, Dawn Moore, and Andrea Harrison.” Kent tipped back his hat. “This makes four bodies and no leads.”

“As soon as people catch wind of this, the gossip mill will run wild.” Bill motioned to the van. “We already got enough rumors flying around about serial killers and rapists on the loose.”

“But at least we know this isn’t a serial killer.”

“Do we?” Bill flipped through a few pictures on his phone and showed Kent the screen.

Kent looked at the bloody mess that had comprised the remains of Beau Devereaux. The golden boy of St. Benedict had been a football star and heir to the Devereaux fortune. The day Kent found his mutilated body along the river had been one of the worst of his career. Beau’s death, on the heels of the rape and grisly murder of Dawn Moore, had shattered his faith in their small town.

He squinted at the picture. “What am I missing?”

Bill pointed at Beau’s bruised and bloody neck. “Trachea isn’t midline. It’s in two pieces. In the autopsy, I discovered his neck had been broken.”

Kent thought of the murder cases that cluttered his desk. “Same as the Harrison girl. Her neck was broken. Any chance wild dogs could have done this?”

Bill’s meaty lips thinned into a line. “Harrison had no bite marks. Only Beau suffered extensive puncture wounds. For a dog to snap someone’s neck, it would have to be big and have impressive jaw strength. Until your men find me an animal like that, I’m leaving Beau’s death a homicide.” He wiped his damp brow. “What worries me is this woman’s bones show there might be a break in her neck, too. If that’s the case, someone around here could have a long history of murder.”

Kent grew irate. He’d left the turmoil of working for the New Orleans Police Department to get away from the steady dose of homicides. Ten years ago, St. Benedict had been the answer to a prayer for him, his wife, and their two boys. He didn’t want to think such horror could have remained hidden for so long in the idyllic town.

“Send me the preliminary results of the autopsy as soon as you get them.” Kent pinched the bridge of his nose, fighting off a headache. “I want it in my hand when I tell Gage Devereaux what we found. He might recall someone who went missing. He’s lived here all his life and is bound to have heard something.”

Bill swatted at a passing fly. “He won’t be happy to hear about another body. You know how protective he is of St. Benedict.”

“Yep. I expect this will piss him off.”

The patriarch and owner of the biggest employer, Benedict Brewery, Gage oversaw everything in the town. Some called him a control freak—a trait many had seen in his son, Beau—but to Kent, Gage was thorough, detail-oriented, and would have made a great detective if he hadn’t taken over the family business.

“He’s gonna ask you if this has anything to do with the investigation into Beau’s death.” Bill frowned. “What’re you gonna tell him?”

Kent clenched his jaw. “We don’t know if any of these deaths are related.”

“Yet,” Bill added. “Seems like an awfully big coincidence to me.”

Kent pulled keys from the front pocket of his jeans. “There’re too many coincidences going on around here, and they all seem to center on this damned river. When can you get me a DNA report?”

“Might take a while.” Bill scratched his head. “Budget constraints and the backlog of cases clogging the system have slowed everything down.”

“How long are we talking? A week?”

Bill snorted. “More like weeks. A long-dead Jane Doe isn’t exactly a priority. Otherwise, we could get a rush on it.”

“Then we’ll just have to wait and see what we get back,” Kent grumbled.

Bill went to the driver’s side of the van and spoke to the technician. He then waved at Kent before walking away.

The sheriff waited as the van slowly eased onto the main road, with Bill’s black SUV following close behind.

Alone, Kent removed his hat and gazed up at the tall pines rimming the parking lot. Cresting above the tallest of the trees was The Abbey’s single charred limestone spire—its twin lost in the fire.

The serene place had witnessed so many atrocities—suicide, fire, and Dawn Moore’s murder. Kent would never understand what the Benedictine monks who founded the seminary ever saw in that cursed land. Legends about the abandoned abbey and its wild dogs had floated around the community for as long as anyone could remember.

When the dogs appear, death is near.

He’d never believed any of the stories until now. Kent feared there might be some truth to the legend, after all.

And the worst was yet to come.

My Thoughts
River of Wrath by Alexandrea and Lucas Astor is the second book in the St.Benedict Series. The book takes place right after the first one ended and has the same characters with a few new ones.

Leslie Moore, whose sister was killed by Beau, a rich kid that was pretty evil. She has problems coming to terms with her sister's death and misses her terribly. Her mother has started drinking and her father hides himself away in his office. She broke up with her boyfriend Derek.

There is a woman's body that has surfaced after the floodwaters have receded on the Bogue Falaya River. Leslie and her friends want to find out who the killer of this woman is, who is she and how long had she been buried? It appears that she had been there a long time. This woman is somehow connected to Gage, Beau's father.

Luke Cross comes to town and the friends are intrigued with him, who is he and why did he show up in St.Benedict? He befriends Leslie and her friends and not long after there is another girl found dead.

It is up to Sheriff Kent Davis to piece everything together but it is challenging. There is a legend surrounding St.Benedict Abbey, which is not only ruins of what it had been. It was burned down the previous Halloween when horrible things happened. The legend is about a woman in white who has a pack of dangerous dogs. Are they real?

Then another girl is killed, who is the killer, looks like there might be a serial killer loose in the town. How are all of the murders connected? Could it be newcomer Luke Cross? That is what Sheriff Davis must figure out, until then the girls are in danger.

I enjoyed the first book in the series and really loved the second one. I have been a fan of Alexandrea Weis's books for a long time and each book I read of hers seems better than the last. I look forward to book 3, River of Ghosts where there are more murders.  Hopefully the reader will get the answers that they are wanting.

I give this book 5 stars!

I received a copy of the book for review purposes only.

  Whipped

Description Charred by G.P.  Gottlieb

Alene Baron is dealing with frustrated employees, closed schools, and a homeless man who harasses customers outside the door of her café.

Then, two dead bodies turn up in the burned remains of buildings owned by the husband of Alene’s best friend and pastry chef, Ruthie. Both bodies are wearing jackets that once belonged to Ruthie and crumbled in the pockets are the café’s distinctive wrappers. At the same time, Alene's uncle, a convicted felon, has resurfaced after disappearing for 22 years. It's all too much for the owner of the Whipped and Sipped Café.

Excerpt Whipped and Sipped Mysteries Series by G.P.  Gottlieb

Alene rose early Saturday morning, shuffled into the kitchen, and studied the refrigerator for a moment before deciding to make sweet potato waffles with ricotta and blueberries. Ruthie had inspired her to keep baked sweet potatoes on hand, always ready to slip into salads, stir-fries, and desserts. It was too early to call the hospital, but she made a note to call in a few hours—hopefully, Finn had come away bruised but not broken.

Before starting the recipe, she checked the café schedule and texted Rashid and Estrella to confirm that they were opening at six. Kacey and LaTonya were scheduled to get there by seven, and the four of them would handle all the baking and food prep before orders started to come in. Ruthie was always off on Saturdays, so Alene couldn’t take the entire day off, but she’d go in later, after Neal picked up the children. The day always got off to a better start when they were ready for him and waiting outside.

Alene made a pot of coffee and texted Frank, who called back within moments. He felt marginally improved, he said, and it was still just a cold. Rhona had come home late again, and he hadn’t slept well. Alene scraped bean paste from a vanilla pod and told him about how her uncle, the same one who’d been beaten the previous evening in the park, had driven the getaway car for a bank robbery thirty years before.

“I’ve heard a million stories about the robbery, but last night was the first time I’d ever seen one of Finn’s co-conspirators,” she said. “And that guy at the park was supposedly the ringleader.”

“Why did you agree to meet Cal’s brother in the park at night?” Frank asked. “That’s never a good idea. Haven’t you ever watched a crime film?”

She measured the dry ingredients and stirred them in a large glass bowl. “It was more like late afternoon, Frank. I told you that Jocelyn was coming along to help the kids and me accompany my dad to see meet his brother. We certainly didn’t expect Uncle Finn to get attacked.”

“It must have been horrifying,” Frank said.

“Yeah, it was.” Alene shuddered as she added wet ingredients to the flour mixture. Sometimes all she needed was a little empathy. “My dad thought that the old guy got out of prison early because of the pandemic. I couldn’t believe that he attacked my uncle. My dad also said that Finn must have done something to deserve it.”

Frank said, “It’s not okay to beat someone with a weapon of any kind, Alene.”

“I know,” said Alene.

“The guy with the cane is still out there,” said Frank. “You need to be vigilant until we pick him up.”

“If I see someone following me in a wheelchair,” Alene said with a giggle, “I’ll run faster.”

“I’m not joking,” he said.

Review Whipped and Sipped Mysteries Series by G.P.  Gottlieb

Guest Review by Laura Lee

Take one serving of charm, add in two cups of intrigue and one mystery to taste, and you will have this captivating new cozy mystery from the author G.P. Gottlieb.

'Charred: A Whipped and Sipped Mystery,' is such a fun read that I completely forgot where I was once, I dove into it.

It's not often that I not only get a great book, but several great recipes to try at the end all wrapped up in one. As a baker, myself, this was too sweet of a temptation to resist!

The mystery of 'Charred,' revolves around a dead body that has been found by the friend of the main character, Alene. Alene owns a bakery in Chicago called Whipped and Sipped, and serves as more than just a boss to her multiple employees, but as a friend that they can trust. This is why her friend comes to her with this information and this is why Alene, despite being unsure whether or not to tell her police officer boyfriend, Frank, ultimately makes the right decision.

Although she may have things under control at work, Alene struggles a bit more at home, where her father's long-time nurse has recently been hospitalized with Covid. Cal, Alene's elderly father, abruptly comes into contact with his long-lost brother, who seemed to vanish without a trace after serving his time in prison for a bank robbery decades earlier.

Alene is unsure of what to think about this sudden reappearance, but as the chips begin to fall into place on the murder investigation, she realizes that her uncle Finn's robbery case may be more relevant than she previously thought.

This all wraps up in a shocking ending that truly had me on the edge of my seat for Alene and all of the Whipped and Sipped gang.

‘|Charred’ is a captivating and fun cozy mystery! I can't wait to see what this author puts out next and I plan on adding her to my 'must read' list immediately!

The results of Eric’s handyman skills were beautiful. The final perk was the light rose-colored exterior paint, a shade considered original to the house. Eric didn’t say a word about my upgraded paintbrushes. He was too busy making sure I didn’t catch him watching me as I bent over to paint the lowest boards on the house. However, I turned around at the perfect moment on paint day and caught him staring. His face flushed so badly, I couldn’t resist doing something to celebrate my small victory.

“Wow, it’s so hot out here today.” I stretched my arms, lifting my tee-shirt up until my belly button was exposed, basking in the warmth of the late summer sun. Eric’s mouth fell open. Success! That move totally stole Mr. Intense’s attention. Tucking my lips, I made a move toward an even more creative tease, bending over to pick up one of the three paint brushes I’d dropped.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

“What does it look like? I dropped my paintbrushes.” I shrugged and waved the brush between us. “Did I not use the proper technique for bending over and picking it up?”

He gave me a dimpled grin and moved closer to where I stood beside the house. Glancing down at the brushes beside my feet, he said, “They do look somewhat dirty. You sure you can handle that task? You strike me as somewhat of a nice girl. With that much paint and dirt all in the heads, you have to get a little rough with cleaning them.” His gaze bore into mine, smoldering me under a hazel brown sugary-colored look this time.

I held his gaze. “Oh, believe me. I have plenty of ways to clean dirty things.”

There was about a foot of space between us now. “Is that right?”

“Oh yeah,” I answered, hoping that the pulse line on my neck didn’t show the way my heart thumped inside my chest.

His gaze drifted from my eyes down to my lips and finally ended at my left shoulder. “Then why don’t you start by cleaning that big red spider off your shoulder?” An amused smile spread across his lips, but a scream shrilled out of mine.

Eric slammed his hands over his ears. “Damn it, Tandie.”

Adrenaline spiked through me. He might as well have said my breasts were hanging out. He would’ve gotten less of a response than he did with the spider statement. “Get it off me! Do you see it? Is it still there? Get it!” I shrieked, jumping around and spinning in half circles.

“I won’t help you until you stop trying to burst my eardrums,” he said, still half-way smiling. He came over and put his arms around me, pulling me into his embrace. “Calm down, Tandie. It’s gone, all right?”

Vowing to never tease Eric ever again, I waited for my breathing to normalize and for my trembling limbs to steady as I was pressed against Eric’s chest.

Trying to gather my nerves, I walk up to the door. It’s large, and it looks to be made out of steel. I try to turn the handle, but it’s locked. I knock twice, waiting for someone to answer the door. I take in the surroundings. If it wasn’t for the flashy cars in the front of the building, it would appear to be an abandoned building.

When the door swings open, a very large man with blond hair, and the most hypnotizing blue eyes stands in the doorway. I take a step back. To say he intimidates me is an understatement.

He’s wearing a cobalt-blue dress shirt, rolled up on his forearms. The color makes his sapphire eyes shine bright. I take in his body. The rippling muscles on his arms, the strong jawline he possesses, and the tattoos that crawl up under the sleeves of his shirt and peek out of his collar. The man screams badass.

He scans me from the toe of my shoes to the top of my head, and when his eyes come back to meet mine, he gives me a wicked grin. He has to be the most breathtaking man. I have had the pleasure of sharing the same space with.

I’m barely able to get the words out. “I’m here to see Liz Black.”

His tongue darts out, licking his lips, and then his teeth slowly pull in his bottom lip. I try my best not to seem effected by his good looks, but it appears the cocky bastard notices how much he has affected me. My attention is tuned in to how long and thick his tongue is. Holy Mother Teresa, my mind is in overdrive as to what he could do with that weapon.

“Blaze,” he says with a silky voice.

“Blaze?” I say with a wrinkle between my brows.

The god says, “My name is Blaze.”

Aurelia writes contemporary romance and enjoys reading it just as much! She lives in Alabama with her husband, daughter and fur babies. She spends most of her time taking care of her loved ones and plotting stories. Excited to begin this new journey, she’s looking forward to sharing her stories.
