  Saving the Selkie's Heart

A selkie warrior, a newly transfigured selkie princess...what happens to love when loyalties clash?

Ceannas, a selkie warrior, must protect his clan during the Migration, a rite of passage that occurs every 50 years. When he discovers a runaway selkie, the daughter of his Prince, he must figure out a way to divide his duties, especially when keeping her alive demands all his attention.

Lyall wants desperately to find out where she belongs. When the opportunity comes to visit the Great Elder and save her father’s damaged sealskin, she sneaks away to join the clan in their migration. The only problem? Being born a human, she hasn’t the first clue how to survive on her own as a selkie!

The last thing Ceannas needs is babysitting duties, and Lyall only has eyes on her mission. But as Ceannas teaches Lyall how to exist in her new element, the attraction growing between them grows stronger. Can their love withstand their honor-bound duties? And what will it cost each of them to do so?

Saving the Selkie’s Heart is a sexy guardian/ward paranormal romance and the second book in The Selkie Seas series by Ella Rose. Get lost in love today!

Guest Review by Laura Lee

The much anticipated and highly enjoyable sequel to the first book in 'The Selkie Seas,' series by Ella Rose, 'Saving the Selkie's Heart,' is even more thrilling than the first.

Right away, you can tell this is going to be a very different story from the way that the heroine, Lyall, is introduced.

Lyall is in a cave with her parents, trying on a seal skin for the very first time. Having just found out that her parents are selkies, Lyall is attempting to figure out if she is one, herself. After unsuccessfully attempting to change, Lyall returns home, dejected. But this heartache is made even worse when, the next day, she receives the news that her father, Lord Prion is dying.

Having been in ill health for a while, Lord Prion cannot heal without using his selkie skin, but that very same skin was damaged beyond repair decades earlier. Lyall realizes that she must find a way to repair the skin, and that she must do it alone, because her parents would never approve of her undertaking such a perilous journey. Or, at least she thinks that she will be alone, very soon she meets one of her father's most trusted protectors, Ceannas, who has no intentions of letting her out of his sight for as long as she intends to carry on with this foolhardy plan.

I don't want to spoil too much with this review, so I won't say anymore about the plot, but you have to read this one!

Rose has such an elegant and expressive way with words, I found myself completely wrapped up in this story and it's world. I wanted Lyall and Ceannas to get together from the moment they were on the page together because I found their dynamic so sexy and interesting. I am definitely looking forward to book 3 in this series!

Guest Post by Ella Rose
Kathleen,

Thank you for graciously hosting me today. As you know, my latest Paranormal Romance (PNR) novel, Saving the Selkie’s Heart (The Selkie Seas, Book 2), revolves around selkies (seal shapeshifters) and other water creatures. One topic I see often in reader questions for Paranormal Romance writers is how the author developed believable characters for their PNR world.

And I always immediately see the authors sit back in their chairs and go, “Oof!” Because the answer is far from simple.

A challenge for PNR writers, on the whole, is how to tackle the expectations for the genre itself: how to adequately address both the “Paranormal” part as well as the “Romance” part of a story. You have to have believable romance while building and upholding the rules of the fictional world you’ve created. It’s a tough balancing act, and some do it better than others.

To me, I think the key is to understand the paranormal part of your world from the get-go. Obviously you won’t have everything laid out in advance of writing the first story. But you have the seedlings of an idea which grow and blossom as the stories in that world continue. As a reader and a writer, I fully expect the worldbuilding in a series’ Book 3 novel to be more richly flourished than in Book 1 of the series. It’s to be expected that your paranormal world will change (for the better) as the series progresses.

But for me, when writing believable PNR characters, I start with the humans. Where will they live—if it’s a fictional town, what’s the closest real-life town I can use as a starting point? What do their daily lives look like? What is the hardship they’re trying to overcome?

Once I have those answers down, I move over to do the same with my fantasy characters. What kind of real-life mythology or folklore exists for the region? And from there, what specific mythological creatures do I want to address in my story?

I knew from the start of my Selkie Seas stories that I wanted to write about an under-represented mythological creature. And I was lucky that there is very little real-life lore to mine—it meant I could use my imagination to build the selkie world in my stories. So the next step was to get a baseline understanding of what rules I wanted my fantasy creatures to live by—do they breathe air, can they speak, do they live in groups or are they loners?

By knowing the rules of your world, you can then begin to merge the human with the fantasy creatures into relatable situations that form the basis of your story’s plot. In my book, Stealing the Selkie’s Heart (The Selkie Seas, Book 1), the main heroine, Una, is lonely and doesn’t know it until the male hero, Ronan, comes into her life. That’s a scenario reader can understand and relate to. And when she initiates the enemies-to-lovers relationship with Ronan, readers can celebrate Una’s development as she falls in love and discovers love is possible for her after all.

In Saving the Selkie’s Heart (Book 2), I got to dive deeper into the selkie worldbuilding, as both main characters are selkies. The relatable content consists of the main character, Lyall, wanting to be something more than she Is; she wants to be extraordinary in an ordinary world. And that’s something that resonates with readers—everyone has experienced a desire to feel special at some point in their lives. And Ceannas, the male hero, is striving to heal from an abusive childhood by being the most solid, dependable warrior in his selkie clan. This is another facet that readers can empathize with, despite the fact that Ceannas isn’t human.

As you can see, as the paranormal worldbuilding grows, even non-human characters can be brought to life on the page in a way that readers can relate with. In this manner, the paranormal aspects are almost secondary to the relatable content brought on by believable characters. They have real-life desires and dreams, too, regardless of their biology. And the desire for love is at the base of all of it.

As always, if you have selkie questions or curiosities about the Selkie Seas world, email me! You can always catch me at ellarose@ellarosebooks.com.

Best,

Ella Rose

“Hello everyone, Nigel here. I thought you might like to read an excerpt form my cosy-crime novel, Quilling Me Softly. This passage is an exchange between farmer Jimmy Coates and his other half, Bailey Frazer-Ferguson. I love the fact that both men are two polar opposites but they are hugely in love with each other. The classic case of opposites attract even though they are totally chalk and cheese in the things they like and do. Jimmy and Bailey were two of my favourite characters to write, especially their conversations on the phone to each other. Just don’t tell the other characters I said so! Lol. Enjoy the novel and let me know what you think. Love Nigel x”

‘I’ll be on a flight tomorrow for nearly eight hours heading home with Tanya. She’ll know him if he is who he says he is. She knows everybody. Like, everybody. And if he is a sleazeball, he’ll have probably tried it on with her. Most have. And failed.’

Jimmy didn’t know much about Tanya, but he did know that she had been part of some reality show about her family’s jewellery business that had been a smash hit and that she had then been given her own spin-off series. He knew she was minted, that she loved employing Bailey to find her pretty things for her houses around the world and that whenever Jimmy mentioned her to Sheena, the reply would always be ‘oh my God, I love here, she’s amazing, and so beautiful’. Jimmy also knew that a lot of that beauty was paid for in Harley Street as he’d met her once and her face appeared waxier than a box of candles. But he guessed there were a thousand versions of beautiful, depending on who was looking.

‘That’s great you’re coming home already. Let me know what time you land and I’ll come meet you at the airport. Has it been a successful trip?’

‘Tanya loves the pink velvet. She wants one of the rooms over here kitted out in it and also one of her bedrooms back home in the UK. I’m thrilled.’ He placed his hands in the air and rubbed his thumbs and forefingers together and sang, ‘We’re in the money…’ a grin coating his face. ‘I know loads of antiques markets and shops that always have plenty of olde-worlde furniture up for grabs, so I’ll have her kitted out in no time.’

‘And you think she might be able to shed some light on Alexi?’

‘If she knows him, then definitely. Darling, believe you me, eight hours of endless champagne in first-class and Tanya’s lips will be freer flowing than the Limpopo. So, I may be a little tiddled myself when I land. She drinks like a fish. Sorry in advance.’

          ‘No change there!’ smirked Jimmy.

‘Right, dear heart, I must go. Tanya wants to try this new eatery. All experimental food and innovative drinks. It sounds fabulous. Loving you. See you tomorrow. I’ll let you know the time. Give my love to everyone. Bye for now.’

Nigel to no stranger to the worlds of both publishing and crafting. He has published seven previous novels - six glam fiction blockbusters such as Trinity, Addicted and Revenge, which saw him gain fabulous reviews and nicknamed as the 'UK's male Jackie Collins', and a gripping psychological thriller called The Girl Unknown. Quilling Me Softly is his first foray into the cosy crime world. Crafting is very close to his heart as he has been working as a TV presenter on the UK's biggest crafting TV channel, Create & Craft, for over 16 years, and he has launched his own successful craft range, A-May-Zing, as well. My mind was stronger than my flesh and bones. I let those men hurt me in so many unimaginable ways, but I knew they did it with love even during those times when there was no mercy shown. It was never something I’d begged for, and it wouldn’t have been given even if I had. No amount of physical or psychological pain mattered when thinking about Stefano’s miserable life being cut short at my hands. It actually got me off in ways I never knew I could. Now, that motivation was gone, but like father, like son. Nazario had robbed me of my destiny and stolen my future. One day, I’d steal his life and we’d finally be even.

I knew he was distrustful of me. No matter how many times we fucked, his suspicions never waned. I was like a damn machine. I moaned, cried, and came on command, so he’d never be the wiser. All of that was a front, though. When alone with my thoughts like I was now, there was a vulnerability I despised, yet couldn’t ever completely shake. The last two weeks had been spent in a daze. The days blurred together, and I found myself lacking a reason to live any longer.

“Why are you keeping me here?” I asked aloud to myself.

I knew Nazario didn’t love me. The only things that man could love were money, power, violence, and the thrill of the chase. It was all good because the only things I lived for were vengeance and sex, and with the former mostly done, I could only cling to the latter. At least, Nazario’s touch made me come, without having to think of other men. Damn, the things that man did to my body. My hands moved to my robe and I cupped my breasts through the silk material.

You’re fucking mine now,” he’d told me hours after his father’s murder.

“Am I?” I’d asked, and he’d spent the next several hours bringing me to so many orgasms that I’d forgotten what I had even wanted to know.

Tonight, he seemed a bit possessive, too. I knew it was more for the crowd than anything else. He needed everyone to recognize him as the man in charge; and his father’s mistress being his was like the icing on the cake. I loved that dominant side of him. He exuded power, and now he had an unlimited amount of it. What would he do to me now? Would he drop me off and leave without so much as a damn word?

I rolled my eyes. I couldn’t just stay in this fucking fortress day and night, playing the dutiful wife. I needed to get out of here. Some fresh air would be nice. I grabbed my phone just in case I got lost on this massive estate, and I headed outside. I started to walk through the gardens. Stefano had told me once his first wife loved flowers. He’d also told me how painful they were to see each and every day after she was violently murdered.

“You never told me you’d arranged the entire thing,” I muttered as I walked along the stone pathway. It was dark, so the type of plants and foliage were hard to identify. I’d taken this same walk many times in the light and I could understand why he would want to hold on to something so beautiful.

I also remembered the things Nazario had told me, including how Donna had died. God, how I wanted to drive a stake through his cold, cold heart. I almost had my fondest wish come true. My blade was sharpened and already coated in his blood. If I would’ve bypassed tormenting him and just fucking did it, this would’ve been over.

“Aren’t we done here?” I’d asked Nazario that day.

He’d smirked. “We’ll never be done, and if I’m wrong, you won’t be able to survive without me?”

I took that as a challenge, and it was now the only motivation I had to even wake up in the morning. As easy as it was to imagine Stefano’s demise, his son was a harder task because all my body needed was his touch. He set me aflame like no one else ever had, including my friends in Sicily. This had to be fate’s way of sticking up its middle finger at me.

I tightened my robe around me and continued to walk. As the night sky grew even blacker, the only thing illuminating it was the lightning off in the distance. There were barely any stars above this wasteland, and that realization made me smile. It stayed on my face until a loud boom of thunder overhead made me jump. God, I hated storms and they seemed to be a lot more frequent nowadays. I stopped and turned to see how far I had walked away from the house and it seemed to be a lot farther than I had thought.

My gaze then scanned the horizon. There was nowhere to go if the skies opened up beside... My eyes zeroed in on the mausoleum where Stefano and others in the Vaccaro family lay at rest. It was mere feet away from me, while the house was a good half of mile or more. Another loud rumble made my decision for me. Hurrying over to the large burial place, I managed to get the door open just before the skies opened up.

Once inside, I shuddered at how dark it was. I slapped my hand against the cold stone until I located the light. The bulb flickered once or twice when I turned it on, and I decided to light the candles near the tombs in case the electricity went out. I grabbed the book of matches and inhaled the sulfur smell as I lit one and proceeded to move up and down the walls, lighting the wicks in each candle. When done, I held the flame in front of my face.

Donna’s funeral flashed in my head. It had been so beautiful, but tragic at the same time. When I’d held up the flame that fateful day and lit a candle for her, I had decided then and there that I would make sure all those responsible for her demise would pay. I later learned the one with a death sentence was none other than a dangerous and feared man. I wasn’t afraid to die. I was only afraid of one thing and that was...

My eyes flew open. No, I wouldn’t allow that to happen. I couldn’t. I would never live a normal life again, because the man in the farthest tomb from me had made that impossible. I ignored the loud rumbling and scary flashes of light right outside of this building and moved down to where Stefano lay. His body was there, but his soul was in hell, where he belonged.

“Are you suffering,” I asked him as I traced the letters of his name.

God, how I hoped he was. I needed to believe that even if I didn’t believe anything else. I covered the match with my hand, extinguishing the flame. The slight burn was barely felt. I tossed the stick onto the floor and moved to the stone casket, which would one day house Nazario’s body. I couldn’t take out the father, but maybe I’d fare better with his son.

Love You Now
Julia Kent

(Love You, Maine, #4)
Publication date: February 28th 2023
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Ana DaSilva is looking for a palate cleanser. A one night stand. A reboot.

Instead, she got fireworks, sparks, chemistry, and the perfect guy. No one wants to meet Mr. Right when he should just be Mr. Rebound, but Mr. Right is so, so right.

But then he went from Mr. Right to Mr. Never, because when she learns she’s pregnant three days after that wonderful night with Dennis, she realizes her sleazy drug dealing ex not only left her with the legal mess she knew about, he gave her a life-long present.

One that means ignoring Dennis’ texts and phone calls, no matter how much she wants to answer.

Dennis Luview wants to escape his pain. Coming back to his hometown of Luview, Maine – the cheesy tourist trap where every day was Valentine’s Day – means facing a past he left behind twenty-four years ago.

Yes, his family is loving, and sure, he has roots that go bone-deep in the small town community where people step up for each other.

But the naive eighteen-year-old who left to serve his country is now a retired Special Ops vet with a heavy entourage of ghosts and PTSD. No woman deserves all the baggage he’s lugging around.

Including Ana, who clearly wants nothing to do with him, no matter how intense their one haunting encounter really was.
It’s one thing to have ghosts, and quite another to be ghosted.

Which is why six months after that hot night, he’s stunned to find her in his hometown, at a bridal shower, her ripe, pregnant belly swelling under a gorgeous yellow sundress.

A public confrontation turns into a very private reunion, and as Dennis pursues Ana she opens up, but is he crazy to want her — and what turns out to be another man’s baby — to settle down and find stability and love?

Or is he deluding himself that he’s remotely worth the happiness an instant family could offer, after his terrible past?

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

“If I thought you’d say yes, Ana, I’d ask you to come back to my hotel room and finish what we’re starting here.”

“What makes you think I’d say no?”

The way he laughed, a gentle huff through his nose, made a piece of her heart melt a little more.

“Most women would say yes or no to that. Instead, you open the question wide and give it nuance.”

“What’s wrong with nuance?”

“Never said there was anything wrong with it.”

“From what I’ve seen, you are a crystal-clear man, Dennis. Why don’t you try the direct approach?”

Inching closer, his inhale like the rush of a conch against her ear, Dennis smiled, his grin broadening, genuine happiness filling his features in a way that made her feel pride.

Pride that she could elicit that from him.

“Come to bed with me, Ana. I love the feel of you in my arms on the dance floor. Your kiss tastes so good, I want to taste all of you. My room or yours?”

Pure energy shot through her, most of it between her legs, coalescing into a throb. Fire lit up her skin, his caress as he cupped her jaw and kissed her again so anchoring.

And so damn hot.

Few moments in life call for complete abandon, but for Ana DaSilva, this was one of them.

Without question.

Without hesitation.

And without regrets.
