On the Sly by Wendy L. Koenig Blog Tour! @Bookgal @therealbookgal

Sylvia Wilson, a bar owner in St. Louis, Missouri, arrives at work to discover the body of an ex-police officer in her locked bar. The police focus on her as their primary suspect, so she decides to launch her own investigation into the dead man and his accomplices. But when the killer sends her clear messages that she and her loved ones are on his radar, she knows it’s just a matter of time before someone ends up dead.

Excerpt

I moved to the front again, checking shadows before dodging into them. Reaching the door, I leaned into it, listening. Silent as a ball of cotton. The key slid smoothly into the lock and turned. I eased open the door. Watched and listened for any movement or noise. Nothing. I slipped my arm in and turned on my lights. The alarm was already off.

Mayhem erupted from my backyard as my dogs snarled and threw themselves at the sliding glass door with angsted fervor. I hadn’t let them out there. Maybe Aaron had stopped by. But the dogs were clearly upset, and they wouldn’t be if it had been my brother who’d visited.

Even if there was a noise, I wouldn't hear it over the violent ruckus. I sidled into the room. Nothing but my blue furniture and beige carpet. Through the glass door, I saw Ruffles was foaming and standing stock still. When he moved, it was with the stiff-legged, high-toed, movements of a mechanical being. His upper lip was curled completely over his nose and the resulting sound came through the glass like an outboard motor. I'd never seen him so livid, and I honestly wondered how he could breathe like that.

Satan was throwing herself at the door again and again, as if she were a small missile that would weaken and eventually punch through the glass. I could picture the trauma her body experienced every time she made contact. If I didn’t do something fast, she would be covered in bruises, maybe even broken bones.

Something had upset them so much that even my presence didn’t calm them. Moving quickly through my home, I cleared all the rooms; no one was hidden anywhere. Then, I put the safety back on the gun, set it down, and went to focus on my poor dogs. I pulled out the rod I kept in the track. That's when I noticed the dark brown handprint on the sliding door.

Unless I missed my guess, that was dried blood.

I pulled my cellphone and dialed Eccheli. It took him a long time to answer, and he didn't sound too happy, but his sleep-cracked voice got animated the moment I explained what had happened.

He said, "Don't touch anything. We'll be right there."

"My dogs might be injured. I need to go out there and check them." Satan had calmed a little, but she still paced the window in agitation. Ruffles was standing stock still, growling.

He hesitated. "Do you have kitchen gloves?"

"I have painter's gloves." Actually, I didn't. But I did have some of the gloves the police left behind at the bar. Close enough.

"Perfect. Go out to them, don't let them in. We'll get there right away." He disconnected.

I probably was working my way back up Johnson's 'person of interest' list with this middle of the night phone call. Nothing to be done about it.

When he'd said they'd get there right away, he wasn’t kidding. I'd managed to find my gloves, put them on, and had only been outside a few minutes. I was sitting in the soaked grass, trying to calm a frantic Satan so I could inspect her for injuries when my cellphone vibrated against my thigh.

Eccheli asked, "We good to come in?"

"Yeah, we're out back."

The minute the front door opened, Satan became all claws and teeth and twisted out of my arms. She threw herself at the glass door, ballistic missile at work again. As for Ruffles, I was used to his snarls, but the intensity of the one he gave at that moment scared me.

I watched Eccheli and Johnson as they entered my house. Saw how he noticed my Colt Python on the counter, pointed it out to Johnson, and how she nodded and pocketed it. I certainly hoped she was going to give that back; it had cost me a pretty penny.

As the two detectives cleared the house, again, flashing lights of an arriving squad car ricocheted off the back fence of the yard. I would probably be as popular in my neighborhood as a scorpion. At least there was no siren.

Mr. and Mrs. Detective returned to the front room. Eccheli leaned close to the glass, studying the handprint. Johnson stared out the glass at me and pointed at the door handle. When I shook my head, she pulled out her phone and called me. "How are the dogs?"

I shouted over the violence of growls and barks. "Ruffles has no injuries, but I can't get Satan to hold still to check her!"

"Want me to call animal control to tranq her?"

I hesitated. I didn't want to do that to my dogs, but I didn't foresee Satan letting me check her any time soon and that bloody handprint scared me. I nodded to the woman staring out at me, feeling somehow like a traitor.

Take your novel’s setting, character or topic and give us an interesting anecdote about it.

This is more about how the novel came to be in its current form. It started out a very different story. All the characters were the same. Well, the good guys anyway. But when I finished I wasn’t satisfied. I am, above all, a reader. And it just didn’t please me. So, I started tinkering with it.

First of all, the crime was a bit over-the-top for the first book in a series, so most of those scenes came out (to be used in another book). A very different crime was brought in. That was one step in the right direction.

I still wasn’t happy though. This book was supposed to be a mystery, so I removed the scenes from the killer’s point-of-view.

I added more subplots. Made the dogs into important characters. Added more angst between Sylvia and the detectives. All these changes, and I still wasn’t happy.

Finally, I rewrote every scene from Sylvia’s point-of-view. If I couldn’t do that to a certain scene, then the scene was cut completely.

All of a sudden, I was in love with the book. It was very different, but very good.

The whole metamorphosis took over a year, but that’s the way it is for writers. We keep trying things until we find what makes us happy. And we take as long as we need to get it right.

CASTING CALL FOR MOVIE ADAPTION

by Dan Romanello

Ted Sarandos, Netflix Co-CEO responsible for content operations, greets me warmly in the executive jet lounge at Tampa International airport. “Are you ready for the trip to California? We start casting tomorrow.”

I smile broadly as I glance out the window and see the Netflix Gulfstream G550 sitting on the tarmac, stairwell down, gleaming in the afternoon sun.

Okay, that hasn’t happened yet. However, authors and readers alike dream of their favorite books being made into movies, streaming series, or television shows (is that still a thing?). So let’s have some fun with it!

First, here are some examples of the authors I enjoy and the actors who portrayed their characters on film. One of my favorites, John MacDonald who wrote extensive Florida-based fiction, had several novels adapted into movies. TRAVIS MCGEE, named after one of his main characters and starring Sam Elliot in the lead role, was based upon his book, THE EMPTY COPPER SEA. And who could forget the classic 1962 movie CAPE FEAR, based on his novel, THE EXECUTIONERS, starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum. Later editions of epic films often pale in comparison to the originals, but that was not the case in the 1991 remake of the same title, featuring Robert DeNiro and Nick Nolte.

Another excellent movie adaption was the Jack Reacher films based upon the character in the Lee Child novels. Despite the difference in height between the fictional character and the actor, Tom Cruise was excellent in the leading role in both JACK REACHER and the sequel, JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK. Mr. Cruise did not return for a third movie, but the character lives on in the streaming series REACHER, starring Alan Ritchson. Which actor do you prefer?

Finally, Titus Welliver played the conflicted Harry Bosch in BOSCH, a streaming series based on the novels written by Michael Connelly.

What about books and their characters you would like to see adapted into films that were never made? A few that come to my mind include the lovable psychopathic vigilante Serge Storm in the series written by Tim Dorsey, the Stone Barrington character from the recently departed Stuart Woods (he will be missed), and the dandy private eye, Archy McNally, featured in the books by Lawrence Saunders and Vincent Lardo.

In case you haven’t noticed, I’m a huge fan of mystery thrillers set in the eccentrically diverse state of Florida I call home.

Now onto the task at hand. Here is the dream cast list I would recommend for my novel, PAPERBOY

Dylan Tomassi (as an adult) - Chris Pratt

Alex Malloy (as an adult) – Leonardo DiCaprio

Esther Lott – Sally Field

Cheryl Tomassi – Catherine Zeta-Jones

Penal Stanhill – Shantel VanSanten

Governor Rocco Philips – Rob Lowe

Fred Philips – Woody Harrelson

Which actors would you choose after reading PAPERBOY? I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments.

If you could leave behind the baggage of your yesterdays . . . who might you become?

Becky Parker Geist’s debut novel, The Left Turn: Two Lives Worlds Apart, explores self-discovery and discoveries in new science through contemporary metaphysical fiction in the context of parallel universes.

Hannah, a forty-six-year-old author plagued with anxiety, and her partner James, an HR recruiter caught in a headlock of grief over his brother’s death, are as desperate for inner peace as they are clueless about how to find it.

But when they embark on a sunny bike ride shortly after moving to the San Francisco Bay Area, a split-second decision propels them into different versions of their lives—ones they don’t recognize as their own. With a mental fog obscuring their past and who they were, they are forced to dig inside themselves to figure out who they are now. Surprising discoveries about the nature of the universe send them on a psychological journey toward who they can become.

Will they be able to let go of their deeply ingrained subconscious beliefs about life and themselves to embrace the unfamiliar potentials they now face?

Reminiscent of the film Sliding Doors and the novels The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, The Midnight Library by Matt Haig, and The Two Lives of Lydia Bird by Josie Silver, The Left Turn: Two Lives, Worlds Apart is “excellently written” and “deeply engaging” (Literary Titan).

Her debut novel, The Left Turn: Two Lives Worlds Apart, the first in the Split Universe series, which explores self discovery and discoveries in new science through contemporary metaphysical fiction in the context of parallel universes, is available for purchase on Amazon, and book retailers & libraries in all formats.

My Thoughts

There is a lot to unpack in The Left Turn by Becky Parker Geist. This is definitely like the title says "Two lives, worlds apart. the first in the Split Universe series.

The book starts with Hannah Fleet and James Wescott, who just recently moved to California, they decide to take a bike ride to try to forget about things that are bothering both of them. While on this ride, all of a sudden a left turn is taken and they find themselves in an alternate universe and what their lives are without each other.

Hannah is a struggling author who has just written a cookbook and has a lot of anxiety, about the fact that they moved and she has not received her luggage. James, is an HR recruiter and is still upset and feeling guilty for his brothers' death four years ago. He had had words with his brother and that was the last he spoke to him. His brother got into an argument with a man and was subsequently shot and died in James's arms.

Hannah and James have no recollection of their past lives or each other. They have fleeting thoughts and memories but nothing that can tell them how they got to where they are. In their alternative lives, Hannah takes a room from a kindly lady and she settles in with a job delivering newspapers, where she meets another lady that helps her deal with her anxiety and neuroses. James has a kind of dead-end job and a rather boring life.

As time goes on they are both able to move on with these alternate lives and be relatively happy. But then a chance meeting changes the whole idea of what they thought they had with each other. A daughter keeps popping up in their minds, Hannah wants to reconnect with her and James also wants to have a relationship with the daughter he hasn't seen since she was two.

This book was well written and kept my interest, even though it is categorized as metaphysical fiction, magical realism, and science fiction of which I am not a huge fan. I really liked this story, I often wanted to give Hannah a kick in the backside to get her to not be so complacent. This is definitely a what-if story about two lost souls that eventually figure themselves out.

I give the book 4 stars.

I received a copy of the book for review purposes only.

Martha Sweeney

(Sleigh Riders, #2)
Publication date: March 7th 2023
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance

BESTSELLING author Martha Sweeney presents her first paranormal romance/fantasy series (Sleigh Riders) that features bikers, swearing, elemental magic, innuendos, and so much more.

The bitter fault of one caused the magic from within to wither and die. It lays dormant until it listens to the beat of the soul to determine all that binds.

Remnants of the legendary feud between the Frost clan and Klaus clan still continues despite a union between the main bloodlines. Noelle and Nikolaus embark on a journey westward, leaving their friends, family, and clans behind, though some seek to stop them. Can the Sleighers and Blades learn to work together as some uncover their ancestral gifts or will this new awareness tear their world apart? Will the one who sleeps wipe Frore from existence?

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo / Google Play / Smashwords / Paperbacks via Lulu

For as long as she remembers, from all of the photos in the Frost home and the Jagged Tavern walls, the Blade’s emblem has been the same. A wolf with a black and white coat, stars and snowflakes lining its forehead, the mountain range and a few trees gathered at its neck, and a dagger in its mouth with symbols of the Great Mother etched on the side of the blade. Other symbols surround it, many of which represent air and water.

Several thoughts flurry into her mind as she realizes many similarities to the Sleigher’s emblem as well. Their design is of an eagle-like bird with a constellation on its forehead as its feathers spread out and curl upward into flames. Under its chin is a similar mountain range with trees and consists of many of the same symbols of the Great Father hidden within the fire.

“Don’t be inconsiderate,” another voice states, coming up behind her.

Noelle glances back. “You started it, Wylan.”

Several more Blades approach, standing behind both men.

“Time to go home,” Kaven instructs.

“I have found my home,” she returns sternly. “And, it is with my mate.” Her hand lifts, revealing the wedding band on her hand.

“He ain’t your home,” Wylan states. “We—”

Noelle’s hands tighten, revealing a blue and silver swirl around them. “Do not pretend you know me.” She stares each of the Blades in the eye. “Leave…go back to Frore. I’ll forget this ever happened.”

“We can’t,” Wylan says.

“I didn’t know your egos were so easily hurt,” she replies with a snicker.

“Don’t be foolish,” Kaven suggests.

“I can take you all out with barely any effort,” she reminds.

Nervousness is found in several of the Blades’ eyes as they recall the incident at the lake.

“You wouldn’t want anything to happen to your mate, would you?” Wylan asks.

Before Noelle gets a chance to reply, three Blades emerge from the nearby alley with Nikolaus in hand. His arms are bound behind him and one of them has a gun pointed at Nikolaus’ side.

“He’ll be released once Theron here is notified that you have returned to Frore,” Wylan informs. “I—”

“Do as they say, Noelle,” Nikolaus says with an expression in his eyes meant only for her. “I will come for you again. And, we will continue on our journey.”

“A foolish journey,” Kaven claims. “Your father is dead.”

“How do you know?” Noelle inquires.

He and Wylan smirk, but do not comment.

“Besides, how do you know I was going to see him?”

“We know more than you realize, child,” Wylan states.

“I am not a child,” she counters.

“No…you are right about that,” he agrees. “You haven’t been for some time, but your place is with your people.”

“I have found my people as did my mother,” she snaps. “My people would not threaten me, hold my mate at gunpoint, and—”

“Stop being melodramatic,” Kaven whines. “It is not how a Blade acts.”

Noelle snickers. “Yet, isn’t that how you are acting?”

None of them dare reply.

Wylan’s jaw sets while his eyes narrow. “If you refuse to return, we will kill him.”

Noelle takes a deliberate, assertive step toward the man. “You kill him….” She looks every single Blade in the eye before returning her attention to him. “I will do the same to each of you.”

Wylan’s body shifts back slightly at the flicker of silver-white light in her eyes.

“I will hunt each of you down,” she continues, “as you did my mother. And, it will be a message to all other Blades that you do not want to get on my bad side.” Noelle takes a step toward him. “If needed, I will bring down all of that is Frore where it will look like it never existed in the first place.”

The ground rumbles below their feet, causing the men to show a sign of concern in their gaze. Noelle doesn’t let on if that tremor is her or her mate since most have yet to see a Sleigher and any of their abilities.

Kaven steps forward, sticking a dagger at her chin. “Stop it, Elle.”

Noelle puckers her lips and blows out. The breath swirls, sparkling in the morning light as it is visible to all. It reaches the knife, freezing it instantly. Her finger lifts and taps the edge, causing it to shatter into tiny pieces. Kaven lets out a yelp and releases the hilt from the coldness. What was the weapon, bounces along the ground like little beads.

“That is just an inkling of what I can do to you and Frore…and to any of you who dare to harm my mate,” she warns. Her gazes falls upon Nikolaus. “I love you.”

His head dips. “I know.”
