Legends of Ash and Dust
Kate Cowan

(Fearless, #1)
Publication date: January 24th 2023
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

They forged her into a weapon. Now, she is the last.

Aerona was raised by legends. Her people, the Shae, are the closest thing this realm has to the supernatural: they train their entire lives to protect, forging their bodies like steel. They are the stories told to children in the night, the monsters who lurk in the woods. Or, they were — until the massive Red Wolf army attacked, slaughtering them all in a single night.

Now, Aerona is the last, and it doesn’t help that she is the only female Shae in history. Besides the revenge she has sworn to get, she has one final mission: to protect Niran, a handsome prince with secrets of his own.

In Niran’s home, the Palace of the Golden City, nothing is as it seems. Aerona’s enemies are lurking around every corner, the Emperor is blackmailing her into becoming his assassin, and an ex-Shae librarian is convinced that she has a long-forgotten Shae magic hidden on her skin.

Caught between two worlds, Aerona must kill, spy and betray… even if it means unlocking the magic this world has long been starved of…

““What is it?” I demanded. “What’s happening? Kentric, I saw fire—“

“We’re being attacked,” Kentric said. Shouts and bangs and running footfalls filled the air, filtering in through the dark window.

What?” I started for the door, but he pulled me back to face him. “We have to go, we have to fight—“

“There are too many, Aerona. Far too many.”

“Too many? We’re Warriors.

“Fifty of us have already been slain in the Sanctuary,” Kentric said quickly. “More at the outposts and farmhouses. There are hundreds of them, Aerona, an army. We cannot win.”

“No,” I breathed. The world had been opening before my eyes that morning: now, it felt as if it closed in from every angle, crushing me.

Taking a step back, I looked to the glowing window, listened to the screams in the distance.

“We can fight them! Drive them off,” I was pleading, tears in my eyes, but there was ice in Kentric’s gaze.

He had stopped listening. From around his neck, he pulled something on a thin black cord out of his robes. It was small and silver, glinting in the faint light from the window. The symbol of the Shae—all of the Masters wore one, a hand-forged silver pendant. A mountain overlaid with two crossed swords, surrounded by a circle of four dragons. He pushed it into my hands.

“No. I can’t,” I took a step back, looking shakily down at the heavy, cold pendant.

“There’s no time for this. Listen to me carefully,” he took my shoulders, standing so close I could feel his breath on my face. “The prince is your responsibility now. He’s in the barns, Malik told him to meet you there. Take horses and get off the Shae mountain. Get far, don’t stop moving, and don’t use the gates to get past River’s Edge. Go through the river itself. Don’t come back here, don’t try to fight them. You are Shae. You are one of us. Never forget that. We will fight them as long as we can. Stay off the main roads and away from anyone until you reach Dothor.”

I tried to suppress the tears welling up in my eyes, clenching my jaw and my fists, but my heart broke as Kentric wrapped me in a fierce hug. He was old, but like an ancient willow, he was supple and strong.

“Now go, Aero,” he whispered in my ear. “Go!”

I knew I would regret it, Gods, I knew I would—but I did as Kentric told me.

I ran.

An undercover FBI agent and a coffee shop owner who values her independence must team up when a local barista is found dead in their coastal Texas town in this new romantic thriller from New York Times bestselling author Laura Griffin.

With two brothers on the police force, Leyla Breda is well aware of the rising crime in her small beach town, but she never expected it to show up on her doorstep. Sean Moran is on an undercover mission: The seaside community of Lost Beach may look like a picturesque postcard, but his team suspects it’s a point of intersection for several crime syndicates that the FBI has been investigating for years. Even so, when the brash and beautiful Leyla Breda starts bossing him around, he's immediately intrigued. He knows her brothers want him to back off, but every time he sees her, he feels more of a spark.

Leyla’s connections in the local community and Sean’s skills allow them to go deeper into the case together than they would be able to go alone. But when a single crime spirals into something much darker, Sean’s carefully planned mission takes a deadly turn.

Excerpt

Sean Moran slipped away from the party. The bride and groom had left under a shower of rice, but people were still milling around beneath swags of white lights, drinking the couple’s booze and enjoying the breeze off the water. Sean would have liked another drink, but he needed to get back to his condo. As he crossed the wooden bridge spanning the sand dunes, he spied a woman on the beach with a champagne flute in hand.

Leyla Breda.

Her formfitting dress looked silver in the moonlight, and it shimmered against her body as she strolled toward the surf. Nearing a piece of driftwood, she dropped her shoes to the sand and sat down. She nestled the flute at her feet, then lifted her arms and twisted her dark hair into a knot at the top of her head.

Sean stopped at the end of the bridge. He had about a hundred things left to do tonight, including contacting his boss.

Instead, he walked over to Leyla.

"How's the champagne?"

She jumped and turned around. Recognition flickered across her face, and her shoulders relaxed.

"It's good." She held up her glass. "You didn't have any?"

"Nope. Can I get you a refill?"

She smiled. "What, are you a waiter now, too?"

He stepped closer. "I'm Sean Moran, by the way." He held out his hand. "We never actually met."

"Leyla Breda." Her handshake was brisk and businesslike, but the warm look in her eyes gave him hope.

"Joel's little sister," he said.

"That's me."

He turned toward the water so he wouldn't be tempted to stare down the front of her dress.

"I didn't get a chance to thank you earlier," she said. "Things got really hectic."

"Looked like you had your hands full."

"So, are you here for Joel or Miranda?"

He looked at her. "Joel."

She tipped her head to the side as she gazed up at him. "And you know him from . . . ?"

"Work."

She frowned. "Here?"

"No. We go way back. We were in the same academy class in Houston, spent some time at HPD together."

"Oh. That was a while ago."

"Yeah."

"So . . . the vice squad, then?"

"Yeah. Mind if I sit down?"

"Not at all."

Sean lowered himself onto the other end of the sandy log. He didn't like the direction the conversation had taken so he steered it back to her.

"So, how long have you been a caterer?" he asked.

"Hmm . . . let's see. I guess it's been about three weeks now." She turned and smiled at him, and he felt a hot jolt of attraction. "Why? Can you tell?"

"Not at all."

"Right."

"Well, the timing seemed a little bumpy."

"Just a little." She rolled her eyes. "We had several staffers no-show. It happens a lot in this business. People are flaky. Despite all my planning, you could say we were a bit rushed."

Rushed was right. No woman had ever clapped at him before. He'd discovered it was a turn-on.

Diving straight into the storyline

This is the morning when Molly is making a fresh start. She and her only son Jamie, due to move to Kent.

Molly raced up the stairs, taking them two steps at a time. She pushed open the door to Jamie's bedroom. His bed lay bare. She turned and snapped open the double wardrobe doors. Cleared out. Not even a pair of muddy trainers or an old, frayed T-shirt littered the floor of the closet. She ran back down the stairs and out into the garden. In the winter silence, her breath puffed out as she spun around, calling out his name. She shivered and tore back into the house. Her mobile sat on the carpeted floor in the living room. Yanking it from its charger, she scrolled to Jamie’s number and pressed it, only to hear a recorded message.

“Hey, Jamie, where are you?” she said after the beep, doing her best to keep from sounding pleading. “We have plans, remember? Today is the day, and we promised to share a last breakfast at the house. Hurry home.”

A shrill buzzing startled her. She bent down and picked up the mobile from the carpet and saw Brandon O’Neill’s name flash up. At the same time, the doorbell rang, reverberating around the house. After a few moments, an irate voice called through the letterbox. “Hey, Molly, it’s Brandon. Where are you? Time is pressing. We need to get a handle on the day. Open the door.”

“Jamie, Jamie, where have you gone?” she whispered. Were the bridges of her well-planned future about to crumble?

The Viscount’s Daring Miss by Lotte James Blog Tour!

The Viscount’s Daring Miss

May the best Viscount or Miss……win!

When her best friend and employer is injured, groom Roberta ‘Bobby’ Kingsley feels compelled to help him. She agrees to step into the saddle and compete in an endurance horse race to help secure his ancestral home. Yet the minute Bobby comes face to face with her opponent—arrogant yet infuriatingly charismatic Lawrence, Viscount Hayes—it’s clear that it won’t just be the competition that has her heart racing!

  • In this scene, Bobby and Lawrence set off from Land’s End on their race, beginning a profound journey neither truly expects...‘Very well,’ Watkins said, taking off. ‘Riders, mount up.’Bobby and Hayes both made final checks of their saddles, and bags and slipped on their hats.‘Be careful, Bobby,’ Julian said, and she turned to find he’d hobbled over to her.‘I will be,’ she smiled reassuringly

  • . ‘I won’t let you down.’‘You never have,’ he shrugged. ‘You never could,’ he whispered, his eyes misting somewhat, as the words his mother had always said to them both passed his lips. Bobby hugged him, tightly, but carefully, ignoring the slight stab those bittersweet words brought, and he pressed a kiss to her temple.

  •  ‘Godspeed.’Nodding, her throat tight, Bobby released him, and in one swift motion, tossed the reins up, and swung onto Arion’s back. Patting his neck, she walked him to where Hayes waited, and lined up the horses.‘On my count!’ Watkins exclaimed. Glancing over at Hayes, Bobby saw the same determination in his eyes as was in her heart. She also saw how stiffly he sat—and she grinned.

  • ‘Something amusing, shrew?’ he asked, raising a brow but not looking directly at her.‘Your rather stiff seat, my lord,’ she quipped back, his insult not close to original enough to wound. ‘I wonder whether perhaps you might’ve removed the broomstick you usually sport up your backside before beginning this.’‘ Five!’‘At the end of the day, we’ll see whose seat needs improvement.’‘ Four!’‘Care to wager on that?’‘Yes, carper.’‘ Three!’‘Loser cooks dinner, my lord.’‘ Two!’ Watkins continued, and Bobby noticed he seemed put off by the competitor’s inattention, and petty squabbling.

  • Apologies, Watkins. Only, it’s ever so fun.‘The loser is obliged to cease with

  • name-calling.’‘ One!’‘ Deal, your stiffness.’‘ Go!’ Watkins screamed, exasperated. With a sharp whistle, and a slight tightening of her thighs, she and Arion were off. A quick run, to start the morning off—they would slow shortly, and take a more sedate pace, but for now, off they went. She could see Hayes out of the corner of her eye, keeping in time with her, and as they raced together away from where land supposedly ended, Bobby couldn’t help but laugh. The wind rushing past them, Arion beneath her, England before them—well. Bobby felt more herself—almost happier—than she had in a very long time. This day, this race—are mine
