Magic School Dropout

Chapter One

Flames exploded from my wand’s tip, followed by Gorp’s surprised “Ouch!

I jerked my head up from the puddle of wax that had once been the candle I’d been trying to light. The top tuft on Gorp’s oversized ogre head had disappeared, and the stench of burning ogre hair drifted toward me. What was more concerning was the hole now in our remedial magic class’s wall behind him.

The fire causing it was growing bigger by the second.

Before I could warn everybody, Gorp shouted, “Fire!”

Miss Mayweather, our teacher, spun around to check where he pointed. Flames now lapped the ceiling. The rest of the class caught Gorp’s panic and joined his shrieking. Without hesitating, our teacher aimed her wand at the wall with an assured calm and muttered a spell.

Löschen.

But her incantation had no effect.

The ceiling beams next to the wall glowed red.

“Attention, class,” she said in the same tone she’d use when she started the morning lesson. The screams quieted, and I could hear her cast a protection spell about us.

Schützen.”

Her wand’s tip glowed bright white, and the edges of the room shimmered behind the charm’s bubble.

“Quickly now,” she said, pointing to the exit. “Single file. The same as we’ve practiced.”

We filed out as we’d drilled.  Once we had assembled at the edge of the schoolyard, Miss Mayweather scanned our little group of ogres, gremlins, goblins, and me and asked, “Who can tell me what happened?”

My stomach jerked. I could hear a bell clanging, calling the volunteer fire brigade to action. Soon every witch in town—including my grandmother—would know I’d set the school on fire. Might as well confess before…

Gorp raised his hand. “It was Wilhelmina, Miss Mayweather. I saw her.”

The entire class turned to glare at me. I dropped my head and blinked back the forming tears. If only I could’ve conjured an excavation spell and buried myself in the ground.

“Wilhelmina the Walking Disaster strikes again.” Flek, the nastiest gremlin in the class, snorted. “Can’t even do a Licht machen spell to light a candle.”

The class’s laughter sent pinpricks along my arms and back. We’d only been in school a week, and already I was the outcast. The misfit. Flek couldn’t even produce a puff of smoke from his wand, but no one remembered that. I was the one who didn’t belong.

Miss Mayweather’s boots and gown appeared within my range of vision as the snickering continued. I raised my gaze to meet hers. She stood, hands on hips, and asked, “Well?”

“I-I-I don’t know what happened.” A slow burn rose from my neck to my face. “The spell wasn’t working, so I leaned forward to get closer. Suddenly, this flame shot out.”

“And fried me.” Gorp dipped his head so the teacher could see his scalp.

Behind our teacher, I could see the first of the fire brigade arrive on their brooms. Some circled overhead, shooting water from their wands at the flames rising from the roof. Others positioned themselves around the building and doused the sides. Because the structure wasn’t attached to the main school, the fire probably wouldn’t spread any farther. Our classroom, however, seemed a total loss to me. With any luck, we’d get a few days off before I had to hear the jokes about this mishap. At the very least I’d have the weekend for the news to die down.

Miss Mayweather studied me and then sighed. “Wilhelmina Quigley, it’s bad enough you can’t seem to complete the simplest of spells, but now you’re endangering the other students’ lives.”

“It’ll take a lot more than a little singed hair to harm an ogre, Bettina.”

My cheeks glowed hotter as I recognized the voice. Oma, my grandmother, appeared next to my teacher. Her gold Elder Council belt glinted in the sun.

Then Mrs. Winston, the school director’s secretary, pulled to a halt between Miss Mayweather and Oma. The secretary’s fairy wings buzzed to hold her in place. “Grayson sent me out to check on the class.”

“Everyone’s fine,” my teacher said.

“Any idea who—?” Miss Mayweather’s gaze shifted to me, and Mrs. Winston sighed. “Wilhelmina, Mr. Osborne will want to see you in his office.”

“Good,” Oma said. “I’d like to speak with him too.”

“Of course, Hexenmeister.” The fairy’s head bobbed up and down. “If you’ll follow me, Elder Quigley.”

The secretary buzzed back into the building. I trudged behind my grandmother under the scrutiny of the entire school. Their faces filled every classroom window. Then there were those assembled outside: the Havenwood fire brigade and a crowd of witches, fairies, ogres, gremlins, gnomes, and elves drawn by the general alarm. Smoke and flames swirled into the sky. The only thing hotter than the annex was my face.

This time, I was in deep voodoo.

Betty

The cool air tickled my arms. Tiny hairs rose with the gooseflesh. Small mounds of pimpled thermometers popped up over my arms, chest, and neck.

I heard a beeping sound, faint at first, then slowly it became louder and closer. The scent of cleanser assaulted me, harsh and chemical.

My eyes stayed firmly shut as if glued at the seam, or tiny weights held the lids down. My breath came in rhythmic, even bursts.

What was that in my mouth? My tongue wiggled and slammed against the hard plastic. I couldn’t taste anything other than stale, rotting breath, but I could tell something was firmly lodged in my mouth.

What the hell was it?

Why was it there?

I forced my eyes open a fraction. Moonlight filtered through the splintered cracks of my heavy lids and shattered against my eyes. Too bright! I closed them again, only long enough for my tongue to push up against the plastic in my mouth.

I could feel it now, not just in my mouth, but going down my throat. A swell of panic ran from my toes to my nose. I wanted to gag.

Spurred by the beeping beside me, louder now, my eyes flew open. I tried to sit up. I couldn’t move. I laid back against the softness of what must be a bed and peered around the room.

A hospital room.

I felt a heaviness as if underwater, the weight of my arms, legs, and chest making it difficult to see or breathe. The scent of cleanser pierced the back of my nose as I tried to breathe.

What was that thing in my mouth and down my throat? I forced my eyes to open wider, but they burned and felt gritty like someone had sprinkled fine sand under the lids. I blinked several times to clear the grit. My eyes took a while to adjust.

I looked down and saw a tube coming out of my mouth. My heart rate sped up. The beeping beside me kept pace as it beat faster and faster.

Why did I wake up in a hospital?

Was I in an accident?

The beeping sped up again, fast enough to send a wail of high-pitched signals through my room and into the adjoining hallway.

The large door burst open, startling me, which made the beeping speed up yet again. A nurse with short dark hair, dark-circled eyes, wearing pink scrubs with multicolored cartoon puppies on her shirt rushed in.

“Betty! Oh my god, she’s awake!” she practically screamed, to whom I couldn’t imagine. I assumed she was talking about me, however, as she leaped to the beeping machine and pressed a button to stop the noise.

Much better.

But… Betty?

Was that my name?

Alaska Blaze
LoLo Paige

(Blazing Hearts Wildfire Series, #3)
Publication date: April 30th 2023
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense

Can an Alaskan firestorm lead to true love under a midnight sun?

Alaskan firefighter Raynie Atwood thinks she know what she wants—until a walking encyclopedia disguised as a hotshot firefighter storms into her life. Grieving loss and betrayal by the man she once loved, Raynie sets her sights on a top command post for wildland fire. But when an extended drought, a high heat, and beetle-killed forests add up to the perfect firestorm, Raynie’s leadership is put to the test.

To add fuel to the fire, Cohen Tremblay tests Raynie at every turn as she works to save sled dogs and Iditarod mushers dog kennels in a deadly Alaskan conflagration…and to make matters worse, a deadly threat from Raynie’s past has her fearing for her life.
But when Raynie’s world goes up in flames, Cohen may be the only one Raynie can rely on…hard to do when she no longer trusts any man, let alone a bullish co-worker. Instead, she constructs a rock-solid containment line around her heart. But fire is unpredictable, and so is love. Will their chance for love be snuffed before it ignites?

Romance, fire, and betrayal…another deadly mix!

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

Saving himself and these dogs would be a tricky maneuver. Cohen had no time to lose. Ash and embers scorched his tongue as if the devil was licking it. Hot air pressed down on him. He couldn’t swallow—no saliva.

I’m out of time! Time to deploy my fire shelter. How will I fit three adult dogs, me, and a sack load of puppies inside my shelter?

Cohen stuck the neck of the burlap sack in his teeth, as he couldn’t set the puppies down in the water. He reached behind and retrieved his fire shelter. He tugged it from the case, yanked the cords, and shook it out.

“Rooby! Wacko! Come here!” he commanded, spitting around the burlap clenched in his teeth. The terrified dogs sidled in next to him, and he crouched down, spreading the fire shelter over them. He tied the end of Madonna’s rope around the neck of the sack and draped it around his neck, so the sack hung on his left side. As long as Madonna sat in front of him and wouldn’t bolt, this might work. He wrapped a corner of the shelter around Rooby and another around Wacko and held the corners with each hand.

This has to work. He had no other choice. They couldn’t outrun this fast-moving wildfire. He tasted ash, a bitter mixture of wood and dirt. The fire bellowed like a savage dragon, hellbent to destroy in the blink of an eye what took decades to grow and mature.

Don’t panic! Keep it together. If I panic, the dogs will, and we’ll all go up in smoke.

Cohen held the shelter down over the dogs and himself as best he could, pressing the dogs close to him. Flames swept the clearing from all directions, obliterating all sound except their tornadic roar. Crouching low in the water, he did his best to keep the puppies above the boggy surface—and prayed the dogs wouldn’t panic and run—or they’d all die.

A dog barked; Cohen didn’t know who. Another yipped and cried. Madonna howled and Cohen felt her tense and brace, as if ready to run. “Whoa, Madonna, whoa Madonna…” He didn’t know how many times he repeated the husky’s name as the raging fire whipped around them. The natural water barrier certainly helped, but the winds tore at his shelter. He gripped it so tight he worried his hands would cramp and lose their hold. Despite his layers of protective Nomex, heat encased his fire shelter and pierced him as if he was the delicacy cooking on a closed outdoor grill.

The hot destructive flames licked at the very edges of his shelter. He prayed it wouldn’t melt and collapse on him. A burning tree crashed into the bog in front of them, and Madonna yelped. The husky yanked away from their huddle, and Cohen watched helplessly as the sled dog bolted, jerking the burlap sack from around his neck and dragging the bundle of puppies through the water—straight toward the destructive flames.

Local school board president, Melvin Renville, is there to honor a bet he lost to the student body by having his face painted. Of course, rumors spread and fingers point at Lyla when word gets out that Renville had notified her, merely hours before his death, that the art program and her job would be cut next year. Red Hot Murder (Charlie Kingsley Mysteries) by Michele Pariza Wacek Book Tour!

About Red Hot Murder

Red Hot Murder (Charlie Kingsley Mysteries)

Cozy Mystery 6th in Series

Setting - Wisconsin Love-Based

Publishing (April 25, 2023)

Digital - 200-250 pages

ASIN ‏ : ‎ B0BFC7MN2G

Charlie Kingsley’s tea customers have two things in common:

They rave about her teas.

AND they have a knack for attracting trouble.

There’s never been a connection between the two … until now.

One night, one of Charlie’s customers passes out, only to wake up to her fiancé dead in her home and no memory of what happened the night before.

But one thing she DOES remember is drinking a cup of Charlie's tea.

Charlie knows it wasn’t the tea, but everyone else is suddenly blaming her, so she has no choice but to get to the bottom of this mysterious death.

The phone rang, jerking me out of a sound sleep. I fumbled for it, my heart instantly in my throat. At that hour of the night, I automatically assumed it was my sister, Annabelle, calling from New York with terrible news.

But then I reminded myself it was more likely someone like Dana, calling with a middle-of-the-night tea emergency. Again.

“Charlie?” The voice was so choked with tears, I could barely make it out.

“It’s me,” I said, swinging my legs out of bed as fear started to take hold again. “Who is this?” I almost asked if it was Annabelle, but I wasn’t sure if I could get the words past the lump in my throat. Plus, it sounded nothing like my sister. Was it my best friend, Pat? No, it didn’t sound like her, either.

“It … it … it’s me,” the voice said between sobs. “Cherry.”

“Cherry?” I wasn’t sure I’d heard her right.

Cherry burst into a fresh bawl. “You have to come,” she said. “He’s not moving. You have to help him.”

“He? Do you mean Marcus?” My mind raced as I thought about her romantic surprise date. “Is something wrong with Marcus?”

Another hiccup. “Please come. He needs help. I need help.”

“Cherry, if there’s something wrong with Marcus, call 9-1-1.”

“You don’t understand,” she cried. “I don’t remember. He wasn’t here. So, I don’t even know how he was attacked.”

Attacked? What was she talking about? Was she in the middle of a bad trip? Was THAT the romantic surprise? I tugged a hand through my wild, brownish- blondish hair, trying to decide if maybe I should hang up and call 9-1-1. “Cherry, what is going on? Talk to me.”

“I ca … can’t. Please just come. Hurry.” There was a click, and the phone went dead.

I stared at the receiver. Really, the smart move would be to call 9-1-1 myself. I had no business heading over to her house in the middle of the night, especially if I was going to end up in the middle of some dangerous situation. Best to let the professionals take care of it.

Yet … her voice tugged at me. She sounded terrified … like something had gone very wrong.

What she really needed was someone in her corner she could trust.

Before I was even aware I had made the decision, I was striding over to my closet to pull on a pair of jeans and an oversized University of Wisconsin sweatshirt. I headed into my en suite bathroom to quickly brush my teeth, wash my face, and try to do something with my wild hair. I finally managed to gather it into a loose ponytail, although a few tendrils had snuck out and were framing my face. I stared at myself in the mirror. My hazel eyes were puffy from lack of sleep, and I looked far older than my early thirties.

Well, it’s not like you’re going to a party, I scolded myself. If you’re gonna do this, then hurry up and do it.

I left the bedroom and hurried to find my keys.

About Michele Pariza Wacek

A USA Today Bestselling, award-winning author, Michele taught herself to read at 3 years old because she wanted to write stories so badly. It took some time (and some detours) but now she does spend much of her time writing stories. Mystery stories, to be exact. They're clean and twisty, and range from psychological thrillers to cozies, with a dash of romance and supernatural thrown into the mix. If that wasn't enough, she posts lots of fun things on her blog, including short stories, puzzles, recipes and more, at MPWNovels.com.

Michele grew up in Wisconsin, (hence why all her books take place there), and still visits regularly, but she herself escaped the cold and now lives in the mountains of Prescott, Arizona with her husband and southern squirrel hunter Cassie.

When she's not writing, she's usually reading, hanging out with her dog, or watching the Food Network and imagining she's an awesome cook. (Spoiler alert, she's not. Luckily for the whole family, Mr. PW is in charge of the cooking.)

Ten years ago, Garrett Phillips chose to go with “his boys” and leave me in the dust of a ratty old tour bus. Now I’m working my ass off to make a name for myself as a Hollywood music video director. Unfortunately, my fledgling studio is bleeding money, and my only hope of saving it is to make a video with the biggest rock band on the planet. Too bad that means working with the man who tore my heart out of my chest when he chose his rock ’n’ roll dream over me.

He says he’s grown up. He says we can make things work. But can I truly trust that this time he will stay for me?

Garrett’s nostrils flared, and he shifted on his stool. His eyes remained locked on mine as he slid his headphones from his head and set them aside. Cursing the tiny tremor in my hands, I removed my headphones and set them somewhere on the control board beside me.

“Olivia.”

My name on his lips rasped over me like calloused hands over my skin. Involuntary shivers rippled through me, and I clamped my thighs even tighter together.

I stopped whatever he wanted to say next with my finger pressed to his full lips. For a long moment, neither of us moved. Then he reached up and smoothed his fingers up my palm and higher along the length of my fingers. His eyes dipped to our hands. Though we barely touched, sensations like electric currents sparked every nerve, beginning in my hand and arcing up my arm to trip my heart nearly into arrhythmia. My breath caught as he slid his fingers through mine, up and down, up and down, before he twined our hands together with a gentle squeeze. I closed my eyes and worked to find some air.

Tam DeRudder Jackson's love of all things Celtic led her to write the Talisman Series. Steeped in Celtic mythology, these steamy, fated mates, paranormal romance adventures are set in the mountains of Tam’s native Montana and the Highlands of Scotland. Rogue, the most recent book in the series, was named a best romance of 2022 by the Independent Book Review.

An avid fan of rock music, Tam never misses a chance to see a live show, especially if it’s Shinedown, one of her favorite bands. Her love of rock music inspired her contemporary rock star Balefire Series, a sexy fun ride following the lives and loves of the members of a fictional mega-band. Readers of this series consistently give the books five-star reviews.

Tam earned her BA in English from Montana State University and her M.Ed. in literacy from Lesley University. After a short teaching stint in Bath, England, she settled in the wilds of Wyoming where she taught adolescents all about the Celts and a bit about writing before she stepped out of the classroom to pursue her writing career full time.

When she’s not writing, you can find her working her way through her mountainous TBR piles, alpine skiing, or traveling to some new place on her ever-expanding bucket list.
