TREACHERY ON THE BATTLEFIELD OF LOVE

Colonel Angus "Bear" Bustamante lives in the danger zone, never knowing which mission may be his last. Being the leader of an elite task force is his passion, and his son owns his heart.

Until Wildcat, a former one-night-stand, arrives at Fort Sam. Bear's heart inflates, and he finds he wants more than a roll in the sheets with the sultry, sexy Dr. Felicia Castillo.

Felicia loves her work and is dedicated to doing her best all the time. With a sworn determination to stay away from complicated men, she finds herself paired up with a rugged, tough-spoken, hard-assed soldier on a sensitive operation that could make or break her career.

No one said the battlefield of love would be easy.

 “We need to talk.”

“I really need to make a phone call,” she said. “Please. Then I’ll answer any questions you

may have.”

“You can make the call after we talk.” He nailed her with a stare. “You said your tools were

part of your job. You’re stationed at Fort Sam, right?”

“I am.”

“What is a soldier in the United States Army doing with a satchel of tools and weapons?”

“Those are all military issue.”

“You need to be more specific.”

“It’s classified.”

“I bet.”

“Call the manager. Please. She’ll tell you it was my apartment I was trying to get into. Or let

me make a phone call. You don’t understand what’s at stake.”

“Oh, I think I do. See, I’m not only interested in what I saw you up to this evening. Tell me,

does the name Jeremy Ramos or Ramos Incorporated ring a bell?”

She looked baffled. “No, it doesn’t. Should it?”

“It should. It’s the company your brother swindled ten million dollars from.”

Her gaze zeroed in on his name tag. “And you think I have something to do with it?” Anger

flared in her eyes. “You know damned well I wasn’t breaking into someone else’s apartment.

You’ve got me down here, trying to squeeze information out of me about my brother.”

“Ms. Kaslov, you’ve hit the nail on the head. I want to know exactly what you know about

your brother’s latest scam.”

“Okay.” She leaned forward. “I know exactly nothing. Zero. Zip. Goose egg. The last I heard,

the little idiot was washing a lot of dirty buildings in downtown Houston. We’re not exactly

close.”

“Surely, you don’t expect me to believe you. Gypsy families—”

“Romani,” she said.

“Romani families,” he hissed as if it burned his tongue, “besides being as dishonest as the day

is long, are known for sticking together.” She stared at him but remained silent. “Don’t look so

insulted. You’re not the first Romani I’ve come across, and you won’t be the last. Let’s try again.

What do you know about your brother’s most recent criminal activities?”

“Nothing.”

He didn’t believe her, but she stuck to her story. She crossed her arms. “I’m not answering

another question until you let me make a phone call,” she said. “We can sit here all night if you

like. Or I can ask for an attorney, and you’ll be SOL until a public defender shows up sometime

tomorrow. But you’ll have to charge me first, and we both know you have nothing to charge me

with. So, officially, this is an unlawful custodial detention. By law, I can, and will, get up and

leave right about now.”

Well, f*ck him.

He handed her the phone.

She turned away and spoke quietly and urgently to a “colonel.”

Probably the nickname of a fellow criminal.

She hung up and dropped the phone into her handbag, and he wiggled his fingers for her to

hand it back, which she did.

“Now, where were we?”

“You were asking me questions I don’t have the answers to.”

“See, that’s where we differ. You’ve made your phone call. Start telling me what you know.”

She shook her head tiredly. “I’m doing you a solid by not walking out and jamming you up.

Believe it or not, officer, we’re on the same side.

“Now, I’ve told you I don’t know more times than is necessary. I’m not going to sit here and

tell you my brother’s lily white, because I know he’s not. But it has nothing to do with me.

Nothing.”

“What about the rest of your family? Are they into the same crap your brother’s into?”

“No.”

“Come on. I don’t believe you for a minute.”

“I don’t expect you to. We’re used to prejudice.”

“You know what? I can think of maybe ten million reasons that might be true.” He was about

to press further when night sergeant Bud Shipley snapped the door open and strode inside.

“Ms. Kaslov, you’re free to go. I apologize for the inconvenience, ma’am.”

Preston reared back. “What? I don’t think so.”

“I said she was free to go,” Bud reiterated, pissed and not looking like he was trying to hide it.

He handed her the satchel and turned to Preston. “Give her the phone.”

She held out her hand, and he slapped the phone into her palm. She turned to Bud. “Thank

you. I’ll need a ride to my car.”

“Officer Ramos can take you.”

She looked at him and shook her head. “Can someone else take me? At this point I don’t trust

Officer Ramos to get me there. He seems to have some issues concerning Romani in general, and

me and my family in particular.”

Preston felt the flush creep up his neck from anger and embarrassment.

“Of course,” Bud said. “I’ll have one of the other officers drive you.”

She turned to go.

“This isn’t over, Ms. Kaslov,” Preston said quietly. “I’ll be keeping an eye on you.”

She shrugged and walked out.

He opened his mouth, but Bud beat him to it. “What the hell was that all about? I had three

calls in ten minutes, including one from some big-shot colonel and one from a pissed-off general.

The one who’s in command of Fort Sam Houston, and he was raising all kinds of hell because

you detained her without cause.

“They both said you could’ve verified her story within five minutes, and she could’ve been on

her way. Instead, you hauled her down here and badgered her for the better part of an hour. She

was part of something important, and you messed it up royally. Care to tell me what that was all

about?”

“Her brother swindled ten million from my dad’s company. I wanted to find out what she

knows. And she knows something. I guarantee it. I think it was worth a couple of hours to find

out what.”

“Maybe she does, maybe she doesn’t. Damn it, boy. You’re too close to the matter to be

questioning anyone about it. And, because of your stupidity, you brought down the wrath of the

f*cking U.S. Army on us tonight.

“Got news for you, asshole. You may’ve thought it was worth the time, but they didn’t, and

they’re as pissed as all get-out. You understand what that means for you? For the SAPD?”

Preston understood completely.

He just didn’t give a f*ck.

Emily Mims knows a thing or two about romance. “My husband and I met in 1970 on a college field trip to Mexico when he asked me to smuggle some film across the border for him. The next day he retrieved the film and took me out for the first time. He proposed five days later. I promptly said ‘yes’ and we’ve been a couple ever since. There’s a little bit of Charles, the strong, loving man I married, in every one of my heroes.”

Emily spent many years as a public-school teacher before leaving the classroom to write full time. The author of over fifty romances, she wrote her first book on a dare. “I threw a romance across the floor and swore I could do better. Charles dared me to-fighting words!” She sold her second attempt and has been writing ever since. When she’s not at the keyboard, she sings and plays the ukulele with two musical groups. The mother of two sons and grandmother of six, she makes her home in Texas but loves to travel and especially loves to visit with her grandchildren in Tennessee and Germany.

Romance Rewind - Redemption from a Dark Past By Romance Author Kelli A. Wilkins!

Romance Rewind - Redemption from a Dark Past

By Romance Author Kelli A. Wilkins

www.KelliWilkins.com

Hi romance lovers,

I’m sharing a look at one of my favorite historical romances, Redemption from a Dark Past. This full-length Gothic novel is set in the kingdom of Hungary in 1723 and blends a sensual romance with mystery and suspense.

Here’s the summary, an excerpt, and links:

Redemption from a Dark Past

Lord Sebestyen Adrik has an unsavory reputation as a madman, murderer… and worse. Lonely and searching for love, he seeks the companionship of local young women, hoping one of them will ease his torment and bring him the happiness he longs for. Katarina is his last chance—but will she fear him like all the others? Or is she the one who can lift his curse?

Desperate to avoid a forced marriage, Katarina agrees to become Lord Adrik’s latest companion, despite the rumors she has heard about him. She discovers the “Dark Lord’s” secret past and realizes he’s not the monster everyone thinks he is.

As their love blossoms, she renews his passion for life—yet they cannot escape the ghosts of the past.

When a meeting of the nobility goes horribly wrong, Sebestyen’s world unravels, and his enemies plot to destroy him. As all seems lost, a mysterious stranger arrives at the castle. Sebestyen must decide if he is a friend or a foe…and if he can find redemption in his love for Katarina, or lose her and everything else that he holds dear.

The Excerpt:

Katarina stood in the parlor doorway, clutching her skirts. The large room was lit with three candles, and firelight cast long shadows on the walls. One story about His Lordship seemed to be true; he did live in the dark. She heard a low growling noise coming from the corner. What was that? Did Lord Adrik have a vicious dog?

She stepped into the parlor and spotted a figure slumped in the throne-sized chair near the fire. A white ruffled sleeve hung over the armrest. A moment later, she realized the noise was coming from Lord Adrik. He was fast asleep and snoring.

Had she kept him waiting too long? She had eaten her fill of meat and potatoes and even tried the greens and biscuits. His Lordship hadn’t been interested in talking to her before, so why he had summoned her here?

She touched his arm. “Lord Adrik?”

He jerked awake. “What is it?”

She reeled back. “I finished eating and—”

“Your name again?”

“Katarina.” Had he forgotten about her already?

“Yes, Katarina.” He blinked up at her. “Sit here, next to me. I wish to ask you questions.”

She balanced herself on the padded arm of the chair as he instructed. Even from her perch, she couldn’t see him clearly—he was still cloaked in shadows. Why did he hide himself? Was he deformed or disfigured in some way?

“Are you afraid of me?

How should she answer? She wasn’t afraid, but she was nervous. The last thing she wanted was to make a mess out of things and displease him. “No. I’m not afraid, merely curious. I’ve never met a lord before, and I haven’t been around such finery, My Lord.” She hoped her answer would satisfy him.

“Tell me about yourself. Where do you come from? How old are you? Are you a virgin? How many lovers have you had?”

“What?” The questions surprised her, and she spun toward him. As she did, she lost her balance, toppled off the arm of the chair, and fell into Lord Adrik’s lap. She yelped and gazed up at him.

“From the expression on your face I imagine I’m not what you envisioned. What did the villagers tell you? That I had horns? That I was a troll?”

“No, nothing like that. Nobody ever mentioned your looks,” she replied.

Lord Adrik was anything but malformed. In fact, he was the most handsome man she’d ever seen. His black wavy hair hung to his ruffled white collar, his clean-shaven face was long and lean, and his green eyes sparkled in the firelight.

“Do you wish a glass of wine or brandy? It may settle your nerves.”

“No, Your Lordship. My… my… nerves are fine,” she stammered.

“For now,” he said, wrapping his arms around her shoulders and pinning her close to him. “But in a little while you may wish you had a healthy dose of liquor in you. It would dull the torment of being sacrificed to the Dark Gods.”

What did he mean by that?

Chapter One
Welcome to Hotel Hell

The world is a chrysalis waiting, desperately, for something to happen. And when things happen, that means chaos follows. And when chaos follows, someone inevitably writes something akin to the Book of Revelations.

The Book of Revelations is nestled between the thumb and forefinger of the wandering priest sitting with one leg crossed over the other in the lobby of the Sweeney Inn. A glass cup beads, crying condensation, at his side. He has stubble he probably dreams will, one day, become a beard.

He really shouldn’t have a beard.

I shouldn’t be thinking like that. There could be a mind reader in this very room. Gamin attracts those types more than most places. It attracts the magical like rats to disease. It’s the magic river that does it, the magic hiding us from the human world. So, case in point, there very well might be a mind reader in this very room.

Hey, asshole, if you’re reading my mind, and I smile as I think this, fuck off.

The round-bellied, redheaded, and altogether-too-good-for-her-own-good witch beside me, Patty, scowls at the priest bearing the Book of Revelations. Specifically, she scowls at the mud caking his shoes. “He’s dragging it all over the place.” She watches the floor, how his legs swing across it. “I don’t care if he’s a priest. If he muddies the ground—” She ties her frizzy red hair back from her round face, making me wonder if she really will sock him. Her absolute kickass attitude never ceases to amaze me, and if fate took other chances, I would not hesitate to make her my dream girlfriend.

“He’ll meet his Maker?” I finish for her.

She smirks, leaning her chubby, freckled arms against the front desk. She’s about to answer when the man gets to his feet and crosses toward us. He’s not too tall, about my height, with dark hair, thick brows, and skin that glows like a penny in the sun.

“Welcome to the Sweeney Inn,” Patty declares, a little glint of pride in her eyes. A businesswoman growing comfortable in her power suit. Her brother, Jason Sweeney, keeps the books. Patty leads the running of this place, and she runs such a tight ship that her orders even make me weary at times.

Together, they run the (Evil) Eye Inc., your friendly neighborhood necromancy corporation and local coven business. Being younger, they’ve moved a lot of the business online with tech-wizard friend Erik Borden doing most of the magical for-your-eyes-only monster coding.

You heard me.

Witches are getting into the Silicon Valley big tech startup business.

What’s the world coming to?

I look around the lobby again and notice a tiny ghost rat scurry in one of the corners, still carrying the piece of poisoned cheese that ended its life.

It’s a work in progress.

“Your name?” I ask the handsome stranger, my pen poised over the check-in book.

He points to the paper and pen. “Really, no computer?” He has crooked bottom teeth, but it doesn’t detract from the glow in his smile.

I shrug. “I’m old, therefore, I’m old-fashioned.”

He leans in a little closer at that statement. The Roman collar, a clerical collar, at his neck peeks out. “You look hardly twenty.”

“Many people have told me that. Well, mostly people.” Patty casts me a withering look at the inside joke. I point to the book. “Name?”

“One room.” He falters at how far I’ve already skipped in the usual check-in process. “And my name is Adam. Adam Way.” He pronounces it “Aadom.”

“Father Way?” I ask.

He nods. “As you say.”

Oh, a poet. I hate poets.

“What brings you to Gamin?” Patty takes the crumpled bills he pulls from his wallet, watching him just as suspiciously as I do. This wouldn’t be the first time a stranger tried to pull the wool over eyes. There was a ghūl just last week who tried to party with a selkie during a bachelors’ party…ugh, the teeth on that one, I assure you it was—

“Training.” He fixes his collar.

“For?” Patty shifts over, pressing his change into his open palm.

“The town’s priest—” I’m honestly surprised this town still has priests considering the string of murders that occurred a few months ago. “—he asked me here for a very special reason. He wants me to become a purifier. No, that’s not quite it. You will think it’s silly, like the movies.”

“I assure you”—and here Patty and I grin in unison—“we’ll believe in anything.”

“I am training to become an exorcist. I’m afraid my family back in Lebanon still hope I can become a lawyer or a scholar or something. Fight for justice. Get married again instead of chasing after some spiritual quest.” He lowers his head and looks conspiratorially at me. “But I’m sure your parents act the same way.”

I sign off on the rest of the book, checking off prepared rooms, and reach for a keycard for him from under the desk. “I don’t have family back anywhere. I came from, well, I suppose now it’s Iran. But I left home a long time ago. My home, the home I knew…it’s long gone. It’s history.”

“You left to go where?”

“Wandering the world. Traveling extensively.” Murdering. Thieving. Gathering an army of the damned, but who’s counting? That was old Lili. Now, I’m changed. I’ve grown soft.

Adam takes his keycard and nods at that. “I’m sorry. Without family, it must be hard.”

I close my eyes and think of the strange little community I’ve recruited here in Gamin. Patty and Jason Sweeney, necromancer siblings. Byron the ghost and his boyfriend, Erik Borden, a techno-wizard (literally). Detective Ikiaq, a shapeshifter as old as I am.

And Jo. Jo Kim. My gangshi, soul devouring partner. Forever asleep because of a mistake I made, chasing after an oracle punk who turned out to be an angry Greek goddess with a murderous chip on her shoulder.

But instead of telling him all that, I say, “I found my family. Eventually.”

He looks another moment into my eyes with his dark ones, his hand matching my complexion, the shade of the sun that made me when I wandered the world as a goddess of Sumer, the demonic opposite to Eve in Eden. His hair’s clipped back, perhaps a deterrent for his sex appeal as a priest, but it does a poor job of it. A gathering of ladies at a bachelorette party nearby whisper about how they’d “want the priest to come to the party before the wedding and not after.”

Even the slight case of sideburns only serves to accentuate his tense jaw, his teeth gritted in nervousness. Everything about him is tightly wound, a watch ticking in a gentleman’s pocket, waiting to spring.

Those are always the most fun to break.

“Of course.” He nods. The gaggle of ladies behind him giggle as he turns around and raises his hand in what could be a wave, a blessing, or both. “We all need family in these trying times. The world seems to be on fire, if you’ve read anything of the news or heard the gossip lately.”

“We didn’t start the fire!” Patty quips, already launching into a half-hearted humming of Billy Joel.

“You act older than me sometimes,” I gripe at her, biting my tongue back as I note Adam’s curiosity. Patty and I may both look twenty-one, but I’ve seen empires fall eons before she even learned they existed. Or before she existed, for that matter.

Adam, smiling, clutches his room key and his Bible in hand, his simple faux leather soles shuffling against the lobby floors as he turns toward his room. “Funny. My room number is 177. One more seven, and I might be considered blessed.” He bows a little toward me, the movement stiff, his eyes a little too curious for my comfort. “But it was a blessing to meet you, Lili.”

As he turns around, I’m cursing beneath my breath. What is he, a mind reader?

“How in the nine Hells did he know my—?”

Patty stops me by pointing at my lapel, where my nametag reads my printed name, “Lili,” alongside “concierge” beneath. “Cool it, Sherlock. Not everything has to be the start of some mystical case file with you. What is this, a TV show?”

She picks up a stack of newly printed Gamin town maps from beneath the desk and goes to restock the sad little pile next to the magazines by the door. Funnily enough, the maps mention town destinations like the riverfront, historic town hall, and hiking in the woods.

The pamphlets say nothing about the dead bodies of sirens, the cursed waters that make you forget your memory, or the string of serial killer murders that, somehow, flew under the radar thanks to a fair bit of magic.

Monsters make great bedtime stories but horrible advertising.

Next, the tengu king’s eyes narrow and his wings ruffle. “Let us see you in your original shape, boy. Your magic doesn’t quite match the kitsune form you present.”

He waves his feathered fan, popping me back into human shape. At least I had the sense to dress formally, in a navy suit and a tie that Su-chan picked out for me. Though, I still feel out of place. Besides my aunt and I, everyone else wears a kimono and hakama. It’s different from the streets of Kyoto, where you see the traditional clothing only occasionally.

Then Soujou-bou raises a bushy eyebrow. “Nakamura-san, why do you associate with a magic thief?”

“That is his story to tell, Soujou-sama. Know that I believe him,” she responds in a flat, neutral tone that raises my hackles. She’s never this submissive.

As I give a deep, reverent bow, he remarks, “Boy, Nakamura-san’s recommendation does not excuse the evil in which you’ve partaken. Why did you stoop so low and steal kitsune magic?”

My insides twist at having to contradict the tengu king right off the bat. Taking a deep breath, I keep it simple. “We did not steal it, sir.”

But he snaps, cutting through the air with his feather fan. “No one gives such a gift! It destroys the owner. If I do not find your explanation satisfactory, you’ll not leave my palace alive.”

The declaration sends a shiver down my spine and my words spill out. “The fox I was fighting was Date Sari. She’d repeatedly attacked me and Aunt Hisako because of an old grudge and used her magic for evil—mixing it with that of an oni to add to her power.

“When she attacked my girlfriend, I tried to stop Date without killing her by dispelling her abilities. We didn’t know it would split and settle into each of us. The kami judged Date for her actions and Inari Okami was merciful. He didn’t require us to return her magic or hoshi no tama, which would have killed us.

“My aunt gave me a chance to start again after leaving the yakuza, and I wish to honor her and follow in her footsteps.”

“Yakuza, you say?” His eyes flick to my aunt.

I whisper, “I have much to atone for, sir.” Pressing my palms together in front of me, I bow as low as I can and remain in the position as I ask, “Please, teach me so I can serve as a Guardian.”
