Context – the protagonist is struggling with mental health issues and inner turmoil to do with someone from the past. She seeks solace in nature which can often calm her, but difficult memories still return.

Circles of Rebirth

On my way back through the village I passed an old man, hunched over two sticks, walking slowly but with dogged determination. Trying, for even a short time, to manage without the support of his nearby wheelchair. We smiled at one another, there was a connection. A sense of knowing that we were doing the same thing. Though a few decades separated us, we were both trying to reach out and touch something that made us feel alive. We were both trying to be reborn.

And so today, in the beauty of the countryside, I stood in between.

Between the light and the shadow.

Between the past and the future.

Between the dancing sunlight of the spring and the black claws of the winter.

And I waited for the circle to turn.

Stone Circles

I wake abruptly. The image of a Celtic circle in my mind, tears on my cheeks that must have started in my sleep.

I have always been drawn to circles. The sense of calm and symmetry to them that draws me in. I love the beach art that is made up of ever decreasing circles of pebbles. Painstaking works of art that exist only temporarily and are washed away by the sea. The water enveloping the beach and removing the beauty that had been created there. I am fascinated by the fact that stone circles exist. The book where my mum found my name is a story of a Cornish stone circle. Six novices who broke their vows and were turned to stone. Some see these merely as rocks in the ground, but others believe these are six young women, punished for eternity, frozen in a dance.

Like so much else, it all depends on how you see the world. If you believe in mysticism and spiritual magic. Most people agree the positions of the stones are related to the movements of the sun and the moon and their relative position to earth.

The stones, the sun, the moon, the earth. All these things are circular.

Siobhan Murphy is a contemporary women's fiction author based in the UK. She spent many years drifting around the world in search of adventure and trying to figure out what to do with her life. She still isn’t sure if she's found the answer, but having rattled on about writing books for years, she finally did something about it. At present, writing feels like the perfect job, and is providing her with an enormous amount of pleasure. Along the way she has worked in places as diverse as the High Commission in Nairobi; a market stall selling cheese in the UK and an 80-foot racing yacht in Australia. She's been a secondary school English teacher and a Barista with no discernible talent for making coffee. She's been a bossy PA and an uninspired private equity fund administrator. Probably her favourite job ever was as a bookseller for Waterstones, where she loved recommending books to customers and applying those 3 for 2 stickers that are hard to remove. For the last 17 years she's worked as a professional photographer, taking portraits of human beings, often the really, really small ones. She suffers from a condition called Pareidolia, which causes her to see faces in everyday objects. Her hobbies are eating sweets, talking nonsense and walking into rooms wondering why she is there. She constantly overthinks everything and will no doubt keep deleting and re-writing this bio for the foreseeable future. Her first novel was sponsored by Earl Grey Tea and many, many, many glasses of wine.

It’s Time to Let Me Go by Cheryl Waters Book Tour!

It’s Time to Let Me Go

You’re doing what? You can’t go away on your own, Mum. Not at your age!’ It was ‘Not at your age’ that made Audrey decide that she was going away, even if it was the last-damned-thing-she-ever-did. She was a widow, not dead. Life must go on!

Olive has spent the last fifty years married to George, who has made it his life’s work to control every aspect of her day. What they ate. What she wore. Whom she spent time with. So, when her mother leaves her an inheritance, Olive seizes the chance to book her dream holiday. Will she be able to lay some memories to rest or does George have other ideas?

Lucinda, mother of teens, has lost her way since her ex cheated on her. It’s not so much Netflix and chill as Netflix and Sauvignon Blanc. Her loving, despairing widowed father persuades her to take a trip with him to Croatia, where he holidayed with her mother. With no better offers on the table, she reluctantly agrees to go.

As Audrey, Olive and Lucinda begin their holiday in beautiful Cavtat, one person’s misfortune begins to benefit them all. And as they become the most unlikely of friends, they realise that you are never too old to seize the day, to live life to the full and to make memories to last a lifetime.

Olive had been foolishly optimistic. She had wanted a nice little terraced house, a lovely garden, and two perfect children. She got a nice terraced house, a makeshift garden, but never the children. Whenever the subject of children was brought up, George would explode.

‘I don’t want my wife taking care of brats.’ He would thump his fists on the table, throwing at her whatever he had to hand. ‘I want a wife whose number one priority is me, do you hear?’

Olive learned over the years not to provoke him. Her mother had always taught her to cultivate two words that would see her through life. ‘Yes, love.’

That became Olive’s mantra when things became fiery with George.

George always had a temper. These days, she would have a case for coercive behaviour. He always timed how long she was away at the shops. Over the years, her friends had dwindled away as George had seen to that. He didn’t like her socialising without him. When he had his friends round for a game of cards, they would sit and drink well into the night.

‘Olive, get our drinks. Olive, make some sandwiches. Olive, top up Gordon’s glass.’

George was always demanding drinks and food from Olive. She would then fall wearily into bed at midnight and be up at six am the next day to prepare his sandwiches for work. One morning, she had challenged him over it.

‘George, you can’t have me waiting on you until midnight, then expect me to be up at six to make your sandwiches. I can’t cope anymore.’

George’s nostrils had flared, his face had gone beetroot. She could see the anger in his eyes. It had been the worst thing she could have done. George had lunged at her and grabbed her hair.

‘No, stop, George.’

Olive’s screams were ignored as he bundled her into the understairs cupboard. He locked her in, then left the house. He had been gone for three hours. She had cried, stuck in the dark.

Her one solitude back then was that he was out all day working! Those hours between seven am and five pm were the best. Now, however, he was retired. It was unbearable; he was around 24/7. It was only on her daily walk that she had some respite from his company. She blamed herself, though. She had let this happen, hadn’t she? It was her fault, wasn’t it? She hadn’t been a good enough wife over the years. He shouted that at her often enough. You’re a useless wife, look at you!

Olive had known better than to reply.

This holiday should have been an escape. She had watched Shirley Valentine often enough. In the afternoons, when George was at the pub, she would sneak out one of the DVDs that Jeanie had given to her. She loved a good rom com, a love story, and Christmas movies. It was her guilty pleasure with a bar of Cadbury’s chocolate.

Sighing now, she opened her eyes. The plane’s engines had started, and they were pushing back. George, thank God, was snoring beside her. Olive hoped he would stay like that for the rest of the journey. A dream, she had to admit. For now, however, she was going to enjoy the peace.

Born in London, Cheryl grew up in Cheshire. Cheryl married Phil in 1991 and that same year they moved to Scotland where they both worked in Edinburgh & grew a family of two children. In 2011, with the young adults off at University, Cheryl’s dream of living in France became a reality.

Renovating an early 19th-century farmhouse, in 2014 Cheryl & Phil made the permanent move to the Creuse region of southwest France, opening their B&B.

Whilst Cheryl had talked of writing a novel for many years, between the demands of full-time work and all that comes with a young family, there never seemed to be the time.

Moving to France brought the opportunity of a (slightly) quieter lifestyle, and then Coronavirus arrived, pausing the world, halting the B&B and delivering long stretches of precious free time! So, one such time- led day, Cheryl typed an opening sentence into the computer. After eighteen months of writing, re-writing, and learning how to publish later the debut novel; “In My Mother’s Footsteps” was ready.

What was originally a dream to simply write a book “one day” had become a tangible result. Cheryl is now on her third, book due out this year, and plans to keep writing! If you would like to contact Cheryl, she would love to hear from you. www.facebook.com/cherylwaterswrites

The mystical world that has risen out of the ashes of science and technology could soon fall.
While the young wizard Ondreeal has her magic safely under control for now, she is plagued with dreams of a nightmarish future that she can’t recall upon waking, dreams that leave her unsettled all the same. A nagging urgency pulls her back to Bastion—a free city of light and a beacon of hope for all peoples.

There, Sir Francis, the wise wizard of the north, will have the answers that she so desperately needs. But if she returns too late, her mentor may fall into the hands of the dark wizard Zairoc, and Ondreeal will forever lose the only one who can unravel the mystery of her past, and help her to become a true wizard of light.

That would also keep robot CD-45 from completing his mission. He carries a dire warning of an ancient threat that looms in orbit above the planet—a message that only Sir Francis can comprehend.

Excerpt from Legacy of Seven: Darkness Falls

By P.J. Flie

Ondreeal gazed at the soaring white bricks of the grand hall, the pristine color like mountain ice, frozen for endless time. Those carved stones taken from the Earth, countless years ago, called to the wizard Ondreeal. You will bring light into the darkest of places. Long rays cast down from towering windows—they revealed the slow dance of specks, golden dust emblazoned by the light before they disappeared into shadow, doomed to quietly float into midnight corners. Those grains looked so much like the sparkling sands upon which she had stood all those months ago in a fight for her freedom and her very life. Lightning from the wand had reached her....

Ondreeal pulled out the ebony rod from the brown leather vest that hemmed in her embroidered, white tunic. She slowly turned the rod: flat circles at both ends, sharply cut off the perfectly round circumference in the center. It showed her young face, now eighteen seasons old, with faint hints of her green eyes and long, chestnut hair. The inch-thick, curved instrument appeared flawless and reflected a distorted image of the hall on its polished surface. Suddenly, the wand burst to life in a brilliant blue-white, making those bricks glow like moonlit ice.

She slipped the rod into her tunic and gazed upon the golden throne, a symbol of power for the great wizard Sir Francis. Ondreeal had trained to wield the wand with a great deal of power herself. She had learned much during her time with the Embertree, who were devoted followers of the God of All: how to fight, but more importantly, some control over the complex magic of the wand. If only Embers Bradai and Doyle had remained by her side, she might have more success to report to Sir Francis. Instead, the two warriors had convened with the Lord of Light upon arriving here, in the capital of Bastion. Of course, what else did she expect Embers to do? They needed to serve their holy leader. She wrung her hands, fidgeting, though never taking her eyes off the golden throne.

After all these many months, all the tragedy she had endured, and everything she had worked so hard to achieve, Ondreeal had finally returned to her mentor.

In many ways, she never believed this day would come. The deaths that weighed on her conscience totaled far too many souls. Her use of the wand had been disastrous, killing many around her, not that she had meant to—though it truly didn’t matter; they remained gone. Nothing would change that. Her heart beat like a drum, and with each beat, a different face flashed into her mind.

Her hands trembled, and her body produced a thin layer of sweat that chilled her until she shivered—a storm vibrating from within. She tried to slow her rapidly beating heart, fighting against dizziness that threatened to pull her to the white stone floor.

Then Sir Francis strode out of a side door, in flowing white robes that matched with his perfectly long beard; he smiled at Ondreeal, bathing her in the warmth of the sun. “I don’t believe my eyes!” He hurried over to her, cupping her face in his hands. “My dear, I have been looking for you from the very moment that you disappeared. That feels like a thousand years ago!”

Ondreeal beamed. “I’ve missed you, too.” She clenched her hands. “I spent time with the Embertree. They helped me. Sir Francis, I must confess, after I left here—”

Sir Francis shook his head, grabbing her shoulders. “Say nothing more. I know the great power of the wand. The tragedy that followed your disappearance is not your fault. If the blame lies anywhere, it’s with me. I shouldn’t have pushed you so hard. If only I had listened to you, given you the time you needed. I was foolish.”

Ondreeal shook her head. “No. I should have taken my mother’s wand the moment you offered it—not waited until damage had been done. I was so scared. Frozen in fear. What I wouldn’t give to change that moment. Death. All those deaths.”

Sir Francis sighed. “Only someone with a pure heart can carry such a weight.”

Ondreeal glanced up at him. Can he free me from this guilt? “Will you teach me so that I can truly control the wand?”

Sir Francis nodded enthusiastically. “And more. You will be a great guardian of light! One that I’m certain your mother would be very proud of.”

Her eyes welled with tears. She stepped back to blink them away when the world flashed. Ondreeal and Sir Francis stood in front of the Lumenary. The white stones of the church rose up to meet golden steeples, and its tall windows sparkled with blends of colors, like a kaleidoscope of butterflies. Marring this beauty was a nearby makeshift stage with a plain wooden cross rising out of it. Ondreeal and Sir Francis stared up at it solemnly.

The world flashed again. Zairoc stood on stage, and looked just like he had the first time Ondreeal fought him—black, polished boots matched his finely- tailored pants and tunic. His dark hair was accented by frost behind his ears, and his icy-blue eyes twinkled at her as he held Sir Francis’s hand up to the wide crossboard of the crucifix. Ondreeal watched in horror as Zairoc ran a nail through her mentor’s palm, then turned back to her with a devilish stare.

Sir Francis didn’t flinch—he simply stared down at Ondreeal like nothing had happened. “My dear, I am so happy to have you home! There’s so much I want to tell you.”

Zairoc moved to the other side of Sir Francis, lifting the old wizard’s hand to the cross.

Ondreeal wanted to take a step, race on stage, and stop Zairoc—but she couldn’t lift her feet. Despite a whirlwind within, her body remained frozen in place. “Sir Francis, can’t you see him? He’s going to hurt you. Zairoc will kill you if you don’t stop him!”

Sir Francis stared down at her, his eyes finally filled with knowledge. “My dear, I’m not the one who can stop him.”

Zairoc placed the nail at the center of her mentor’s palm.

Ondreeal screamed at Zairoc. “Leave him alone! Get away from him! Sir Francis, please, you have to stop him. Please!”

Zairoc plunged the nail through the old wizard’s palm. Sir Francis wailed in pain.

Publication Date: May 1, 2023

Publisher: Casa Croce Press

Page Length: 346

Genre: Literary Historical Fiction

Northern New England, summer, 1688.
Salem started here.

A suspicious death. A rumor of war. Whispers of witchcraft.

Perched on the brink of disaster, Resolve Hammond and her mother, Deliverance, struggle to survive in their isolated coastal village. They're known as healers taught by the local tribes - and suspected of witchcraft by the local villagers.

Their precarious existence becomes even more chaotic when summoned to tend to a poisoned woman. As they uncover a web of dark secrets, rumors of war engulf the village, forcing the Hammonds to choose between loyalty to their native friends or the increasingly terrified settler community.

As Resolve is plagued by strange dreams, she questions everything she thought she knew - about her family, her closest friend, and even herself. If the truth comes to light, the repercussions will be felt far beyond the confines of this small settlement.

Based on meticulous research and inspired by the true story of the fear and suspicion that led to the Salem Witchcraft Trials, THE DEVIL'S GLOVE is a tale of betrayal, loyalty, and the power of secrets. Will Resolve be able to uncover the truth before the town tears itself apart, or will she become the next victim of the village's dark and mysterious past?
