Jeannine Hall Gailey’s Flare, Corona Book Spotlight! @webbish6

May 9, 2022 • 112 pages

Paperback: 978-1-950774-92-0 • $17.00 Ebook: 978-1-950774-93-7 • $9.99

Against a constellation of solar weather events and an evolving pandemic, Jeannine Hall Gailey’s Flare, Corona paints a self-portrait of the ways that we prevail and persevere through health adversities while facing an uncertain future.

Gailey juxtaposes eclipses and hurricanes with a body's many medical challenges, including neurological symptoms that turn out to be multiple sclerosis, highlighting the miraculous while melding the personal with the political to tell a story of a world and body in crisis. Alongside harbingers of apocalypse, foxes, cherry trees, and supervillains populate the page. Flare, Corona faces calamity head-on, illuminating the power of humor and hope to brave the ever-shifting landscapes of personal and ecological adversity.

Jeannine Hall Gailey's poems are incandescent and tender-hearted, gracefully insistent on teaching us how we can live in a beautiful and perilous world, the ways in which we can brilliantly and stubbornly survive.

Advance Praise:

“Who knew the apocalypse could be so fun? Jeannine Hall Gailey, that’s who. Our trenchant speaker, who ‘wrote a nuclear winter poem when I was seven,’ now in mid-life finds herself smack dab in the eye of a perfect storm: a mistaken terminal cancer diagnosis resolves itself into an MS diagnosis accessorized with a coronavirus crown. Yet these poems are deeply life-affirming, filled with foxes and fairytales and fig trees. Flare, Corona is a surprising, skilled, and big- hearted book.” — Beth Ann Fennelly, author of Heating & Cooling: 52 Micro-Memoirs

“Everything really is connected is what I kept thinking as I read Jeannine Hall Gailey’s Flare, Corona. In it, the ecological crisis we face is felt in the marrow of the body, and ‘chronic illness’ becomes a phrase to characterize not only a human condition but our global one. Yet Gailey faces personal and societal illness with characteristic deep feeling and humor, and I was struck by the search for hope and optimism undergirding these inviting, image-rich poems: ‘Look to the future—perhaps that glow you see isn’t fire, but sunrise.’” — Dana Levin, author of Now You Do Know Where You Are

“The milieu of Flare, Corona, is at once literal and metaphorical: what blooms in the water and soil of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, ultimately blooms in the bodies of those who grew up there. This collection effortlessly toggles between what feels endangered in the macro-political scale of contemporary American society, and in the micro-medical reality of our speaker: ‘My first flare came on the week of the solar eclipse / when the shadow fell cold over us, and the birds stopped singing.’ What’s astonishing about this collection is how the poet showcases her trademark dark humor and vivid hyperbole—all the while pulling the reader in close to consider, frankly and with earned insight, the experience of chronic illness. Crafty uses of parallel structure and self-portraiture elevate personal narratives into poems that will outlive any apocalypse. This is an immersive, terrific read.” — Sandra Beasley, author of Made to Explode.

Writing the Poems in Flare, Corona

by Jeannine Hall Gailey

Preamble

I’m going to talk about writing one of my favorite poems – one of the first you’ll read in the book – from Flare, Corona, called “Calamity.”

“Calamity” is probably a typical poem for me, in that it is in couplets and switches between darker and lighter notes, humor and seriousness. Godzilla makes an appearance, and also a verse from the bible.

Inspiration for the Poem

So, I started to write this poem in November of 2019 – when I started reading about a Chinese doctor who was put in prison after he talked online about some patients – lab techs – who died of a strange virus. I thought, I’ve seen this disaster movie before.

It was also right before Thanksgiving and hearing so many people stressing out – you may remember in 2019 politics was particularly fraught – about family encounters during Thanksgiving, which became the first line of the poem.

The Title

The original title was “Calamity Jane” because of my personal history of “disasters” but I cut the Jane out before I submitted it, because I made it less of a personal poem, and more universal.

The rest of the poem kind of flowed from the many ideas of what a “calamity” might entail – UFOs, meteors, even a sports team’s loss, or, even getting snowed in on Thanksgiving.

Themes and Placement in the Book

One of the themes of Flare, Corona, is survival – in many forms.  I thought this poem might be a good thesis poem for the book – that is, encompassing its themes, but in a slightly more lighthearted form than some of the other poems about the same subject – and that’s why I decided to put it so early in the book.

Also, it was one of the first poems I ever had accepted and published at Poetry Magazine – and I was really excited about that. (I’d been submitting since I was 19! Lots of encouraging rejections, but the first acceptance was when I was 46!

Form and Sound

A lot of sound informed this poem – a lot of alliteration,  “s” and “e” sounds. I like playing with sonic devices. The couplets make the poem feel a little more formal, and I have a few sort-of-sonnets in the book – called “mutant sonnets,” because they’re always a little off. Just like me! Ha. This one didn’t quite qualify, but I like couplets for making poems feel neat and purposeful – it also works well with short, punchy lines. I also used a mix of enjambment and end-stopped lines, to give the poem a little more energy and movement as you read it.

This poem first appeared in Poetry Magazine in April 2020, then in my book Flare, Corona

Calamity

Your family is coming over for Thanksgiving.

Even worse, it’s snowing.

Headless robots are playing soccer with your soul.

UFOs have been sighted overhead.

A meteor is definitely heading straight for you.

It might miss, but then again.

Tonight a city is being decimated by Godzilla,

or was it a bunch of genetically-engineered dinosaurs?

Either way, I hope you’re lizard-friendly.

Tonight you have to give a speech

and that girl who hated you in third grade

will be in the audience. What have I ever done

to deserve this? the prophet asks, tearing his robes

in the desert. God responds: how long you got?

A plague of egrets, of eaglets, of egress.

A black hole has just opened up and it is

already swallowing someone else’s sun.

Did you see the team play last night? A travesty.

Someone is always preaching about doomsday.

Who are you wearing? Because tonight

your life will be required of you. Grab a bag,

a sword, a water bottle. Go out swinging.

“Jeannie,” Vickie, the bride, says. She’s so beautiful with the happy newly married glow. “Have you met Colt’s coach, Aiden?”
Shocked by the question, I look around the room and hope my mother will come save me, but she’s too busy talking and laughing to bother noticing me. I clear my throat and offer him my hand. His large palm practically envelops it. When he lifts my knuckles to his lips and kisses them, I almost combust into flames. It’s been almost two years since I felt a man’s lips on any part of me. That must be why my body is short circuiting right now. But if I have a few more drinks, I’m going to drag him into a dark corner and have my way with him. I clear my throat and yank my hand away.
“So, you ah, coach football?” I ask, unsure of what else I could possibly ask. I try to think of any information my mother has given me. She says Mr. Colt is a football player. Vickie giggles and Colt groans.
“Basketball,” Aiden corrects.
“Are you sure?” I ask. “My mom said you’re a football player,” I say to Colt.
Vickie tries to hide her laugh but fails.
“I’m going to have a talk with Myra,” Colt says, but he’s being playful, so I’m not completely mortified by my faux pas.
“Yeah, and I’m pretty sure I coach basketball, not football,” Aidan says.
“Oh.” I wave my hand. “I don’t watch either.” I turn back to my chair, certain that they think I’m an idiot and will leave me alone now.
“More of a reader, I see,” Aiden responds. “What book has you so engrossed?”
My eyes dart to the table in search of my book. I thank a higher power that it’s safely inside my purse. No need to let these newlyweds and the sexy one know that my life is a train wreck. “Nothing you would find particularly interesting.” I clear my throat, but when I turn to look at Aiden, he’s looking directly at me.
“Try me,” he says. I take a step toward the table, grab my purse and shove it under my chair. No way in hell he’ll see this book.

So when he is approached by Zanabar, a mysterious sorcerer who asks him for help retrieving a genie lamp from 1924 before it falls into the wrong hands, Frankie accepts.

When Frankie gets back to the past, however, he finds himself in the middle of a shootout between two supernatural gangs: the Demons and the Harvesters. Both groups are fighting for possession of the genie lamp and are willing to do anything to get it.

Along the way, Frankie befriends Levi, a nonmagical speakeasy owner, and Evelyn, an oracle, who warns him that Zanabar might not be trustworthy. As the trio finally close in on the genie lamp, a startling realization comes to light: Frankie might be stuck in 1924.

They soon discover that Lady Luck is behind their change of fate. And while she dishes out good luck to those who need it, after a year their luck abruptly turns bad and often leads to their deaths.

While Frankie and his friends close in on Lady Luck, her next victim hits close to home: Anna, Frankie’s grandmother who is a young woman and still pregnant with Frankie’s father in 1924, has made a deal with Lady Luck herself. If Frankie and his friends can’t turn their luck around in time and stop Lady Luck from wreaking havoc on the her victims, Frankie’s life—and everyone he knows in his own time—could be at stake.

Lost by Magic Book 3

How much is your soul worth?

After thinking that they’re hunting a crossroads demon, Frankie and his friends discover that Hecate is in town, and she’s after innocent souls. The gatekeeper of the underworld sends phantoms, who takes the shape of someone from the victim’s past, and torments them until they decide to trade in their soul to end the suffering.

While trying to find a way to stop the goddess, Evelyn finds herself trapped in an alternate plane, where she witnesses Hecate quietly wreaking havoc of those around her. And the longer she spends in the alternate plane, the weaker she becomes.

Meanwhile, Frankie is suddenly seeing his late wife, who tries to persuade him to join her in the afterlife so they can spend eternity together.

As Hecate closes in on the group, Levi is the only one who can see what’s going on. And as the only one without magic of his own, saving his friends might be an impossible task.

Where the Grass Grows Blue by Hope Gibbs Blog Tour! @Bookgal @therealbookgal

Penny Crenshaw’s divorce and her husband’s swift remarriage to a much younger woman have been hot topics around Atlanta’s social circles. After a year of enduring the cruel gossip, Penny leaps from the frying pan into the fire by heading back to Kentucky to settle her grandmother’s estate.

Reluctantly, Penny travels to her hometown of Camden, knowing she will be stirring up all the ghosts from her turbulent childhood. But not all her problems stem from a dysfunctional family. One of Penny’s greatest sources of pain lives just down the street: Bradley Hitchens, her childhood best friend, the keeper of her darkest secrets, and the boy who shattered her heart.

As Penny struggles with sorting through her grandmother’s house and her own memories, a colorful group of friends drifts back into her life, reminding her of the unique warmth, fellowship, and romance that only the Bluegrass state can provide. Now that fate has forced Penny back, she must either let go of the scars of her past or risk losing a second chance at love.

A Letter to my Ten-Years Ago Self…

Dear Hope Gibbs,

I know I’m addressing you by your maiden name. Don’t panic. You’re not in the midst of a divorce. Your marriage is strong, even with the craziness of trying to wrangle five children, but in ten years, this is the name you will be using hundreds of times a week. There’s a good reason for it, one that I’m sure will shock you, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Recently, you celebrated a big milestone—turning forty. I know it sounds old right now, but this is the best decade of your life. Some big changes are coming your way, and you’re about to accomplish something you didn’t realize or even know you wanted to do.

Your thirties were a rollercoaster. You were a bundle of nervous energy. A third pregnancy, the loss of beloved family members, a painful divorce, falling in love all over again, another marriage, and becoming a stepmother to two small children. But good news, you have a full and happy nest, though the decade is a blur of soccer games, carpool runs, homework, and never-ending trips to the grocery store. Feeding a household of seven can be exhausting. But you will start changing in your forties. Don’t get me wrong, you will still do all those things, but know this. Those little birds will fly away. Sooner than you think, and your realization of that fact sets you on a path that will change your life.

Now here’s another "don’t panic" moment, around forty-five, you’re going to have a little mid-life crisis. Don’t freak out. You won’t buy an expensive car or alter your appearance, though you will be going to the salon more often because your hair color will betray you, but you’ll start to question your choices. What have I accomplished with my life other than being a wife and mother? When my children are gone, who will I be?  This will be on a continuous loop in your mind, and on your worst days, you’ll start regretting your decision to leave that corporate job to raise those wonderful, infuriating children. Most people would say to ignore that inner voice, but I’m telling you to listen to it because it will propel you into something unimaginable.

After reevaluating your life, you’ll start journaling. That lasts about a week because you’ll hate it. Then, you’ll do something extraordinary—you’ll develop a character, getting to know her through your imagination. You’ll spend countless hours with her, developing her backstory, creating her world, and fleshing out her fears. You’ll laugh, cry, and grow with her, and before you know it, you’ll type the words…THE END. Hope, you write a book! I know you’ve not written anything longer than an email since college, but somehow, you turned that mini-midlife crisis into a novel that will be published by Red Adept, with the audio rights being sold to Blackstone. Oh. And they make you change your name, but that’s okay because Cummiskey is hard to spell and Gibbs was your name first.

Now in your fifties, your days are filled with writing, and it’s wonderful. You need it as much as you need tennis. Don’t worry, you still play multiple times a week even though you’ll have three knee surgeries in the next ten years. It’s okay, you have a great orthopedist. Every day you’re surrounded by a warm and welcoming community of writers and readers. You’ll also be the host of a monthly Facebook Live program for over 5,000 bibliophiles and start a podcast. I’ll explain what that is later.

The next ten years will define you. Enjoy every second of it. And remember, you’re never too old to follow your dreams.

P.S. Your two stepchildren will ask you to officially adopt them on Christmas morning in 2020. You’ll cry your eyes out.

Praise:

"In Where the Grass Grows Blue, Hope Gibbs examines Penny Crenshaw’s journey to pick up the pieces and begin again after divorce. But this mother of three sons soon learns that if she wants to move forward, she’ll have to first go back to the start. Readers will enjoy this fast-paced southern story about second-chances, lifelong friendships, and the healing power of forgiveness."

– Julie Cantrell, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Perennials

"Where The Grass Grows Blue hit me in all the right places. Young lovers separated by a misunderstanding reunite twenty years later, only to discover that although their love never faded, their choices are insurmountable. Or are they?

Gibbs skillfully weaves the dark side of life with the beauty of a love that has only grown stronger over time. Keep an eye on this author – she is one to watch!”

– Barbara Conrey, USA Today Bestselling Author of Nowhere Near Goodbye

"Hope Gibbs' debut, Where the Grass Grows Blue, is worthy of taking its place among true Southern fiction novels where the banter is witty and the women are true steel magnolias.

It’s a delightful, engaging story about following your heart.”

– Grace Sammon, Award-Winning Author of The Eves, and host of The Storytellers

"Where the Grass Grows Blue is the most authentic and endearing book I’ve read in ages. Penny’s difficult and heartbreaking rural background in Kentucky (the Bluegrass state) and her high society life in Atlanta could not be more different. But when she can’t hide from her past anymore, her life comes full circle.

I think Penny is my new fictional best friend. There were times I wanted to read quickly to see how everything unfolds, but this story is to be savored. Don’t rush this Southern gem."

– Cindy Dorminy, author of The Foster Wife and In a Jam

"Hope Gibbs drops the reader into a colorful, southern, small-town setting where Penny Crenshaw—a divorced mother with a tumultuous childhood—is desperate to outrun her past.

Where The Grass Grows Blue is one woman's story of perseverance despite her painful past. A story of small-town living and second chances, romance and resilience, friendship and forgiveness. One you’ll think of long after you turn the last page."

– Jill Hannah Anderson, Author of A Life Unraveled, The To-Hell-And-Back Club, and Crazy Little Town Called Love

"Where The Grass Grows Blue is an evocative story-with a southern flair-about going back to the place that brought so much pain for a second chance at love and redefining oneself.

This is one you'll fall in love with."

– Donna Norman-Carbone, Author of All That Is Sacred
