Having just completed a challenging case, private detective Terry Luvello was hoping for some rest. Instead, a 3:00 a.m. visit from a thirteen-year-old neighbor is a prelude to what will soon become the most perplexing case of his career. The girl’s father, the director of the Cleveland Federal Reserve, has just been accused of murder. Even worse, the police are in possession of evidence that seems to confirm the father’s guilt.

Reluctant though intrigued, Terry is soon thrust into the world of deepfake videos—fabricated recordings so real they are virtually impossible to disprove. Shortly after Terry begins his investigation, similar videos implicate four other individuals with ties to high finance.

With the help of his partner and girlfriend, police detective Hannah Page, Terry soon realizes that disproving the videos is only half the battle. In a case filled with misdirection, Terry and Hannah must determine the true motive behind his client’s frame while matching wits with an unknown adversary willing to kill anyone who stands in his way. As they learn more about their enemy’s true intentions, Terry and Hannah race against time to prevent a crime on a scale far greater than they could have ever imagined.

A transgender male with a uniquely wry sense of humor, Terry seeks to solve his case while continuing with the clinical transition he began months earlier. As the investigation reaches a climax, he must decide just what he is willing to sacrifice to save the woman he loves.

Prologue
The climax of every magic trick, the word abracadabra is derived from “avra kehdavra,” an ancient Aramaic phrase meaning “I will create as I speak.” As an origin theory, it makes more sense than most—the magician is attempting to create an effect as they wave their magic wand.

My first encounter with illusion occurred when I was nine years old as I followed my usual route home from Saint Jerome’s Grade School. The short, gray-haired man wearing an old-fashioned top hat appeared as if from nowhere, standing behind a small table in front of one of Mayfield Road’s many coffee shops.

Fascinated by the man’s rapid, precise movements, I watched along with three adults as one ball, then two, then three passed through the seemingly solid bottom of one of the three cups standing before him on the table. My adult companions clapped as the trick was completed. Two placed dollar bills in a glass jar already half full with cash.

The grown-ups in the crowd soon moved on, but I continued to watch. In part, I was fascinated by the man’s hands. More importantly, I wanted to know if I was right.

After readjusting his cups on the table, the old man became aware of the child still in his audience. Likely realizing I had no money, he continued his preparations, finally choosing to address me as he finished.

“I suppose, young one, you want to know how it’s done?”

I thought I already knew the answer, but I was afraid he wouldn’t tell me. Even at nine, I knew magicians never revealed their secrets.

“I’m guessing you had a fourth ball. I saw you move the bottom cup toward you, and I figured that’s when you stuck the ball in. After that, you kept doing the same thing over and over until three balls were on the bottom.”

The magician looked at me with an odd grimace as if he suspected I was some sort of double agent. His next words verified the accuracy of my guess.

“How come you didn’t tell any of the others? Most kids your age would have.”

“I figured they’d rather not know. Me telling would have just ruined it.”

He gave me that odd look again, but by then, another small crowd had moved in front of the table. The magician resumed ignoring me as he moved effortlessly into his next act.

He continued performing in front of his coffee shop perch for nearly a month, and I stopped every day to watch his exhibition. Some tricks I could figure out, others I couldn’t. For those tricks I couldn’t fathom, the magician enlightened me after the rest of his audience had moved away.

While I imagined an audience of my own, I never became as good as my teacher. Armed with his knowledge, I still couldn’t match the old man’s patter or the fluidity of his movements. Despite considerable practice, my misdirection skills remained second-rate.

My magical aspirations dashed, I discovered I could still make adult use of my illusionist training. Though private detectives rarely perform feats of misdirection, identifying them is essential to the trade. As Terry Luvello, private investigator, I managed to do so in cases that included cheating spouses, embezzlement, missing children, and, in one notable instance, a priest who spent his off-hours mentoring a serial killer.

But what if in doing your job, you found that one trick, that one con, where the right way to look is only a mirage? What if the misdirection was just another illusion, and the magician himself was never really there?

And as far as abracadabra is concerned, there is another, darker origin story that many now believe to be true. Instead of “avra kehdavra,” some scholars maintain the chant was spawned by “avada kedavra,” a very different Aramaic phrase popularized by Harry Potter and meaning “let the thing be destroyed.” Not being a linguist, I couldn’t say which claim was correct.

Though based on recent experience, I was betting on the latter.

Murder at the Pontchartrain By Kathleen Kaska Book Tour!

Murder at the Pontchartrain

By Kathleen Kaska

Private detective Sydney Lockhart and her boyfriend/partner, Ralph Dixon, are headed for New Orleans to tie the knot—again. Having been stalled on their first attempt by some unfinished business dealing with their last case, Sydney and Dixon are now in the Pontchartrain Hotel in the Big Easy. While their marriage license rests at the courthouse for its 24-hour waiting period, they stroll to the French Quarter to visit Rip Thigbee, Sydney’s friend from her previous investigation. Rip owns Finder of Lost Souls, a detective agency dealing with the spirits of murder victims whose cases remain unsolved

When Sydney and Dixon are at Rip’s office, they learn he went missing after investigating the disturbance of local businessman Frank Threadgill’s crypt. Voodoo Queen Frida Mae, whose shop is located next to Thigbee’s, fears that bad juju led to Threadgill’s death and has now infiltrated Rip’s business. Upon returning to their hotel room, to plan their next step, they find Threadgill’s wife, Mildred, waiting for them. Unfortunately, Mildred has been murdered. The police haul the couple down to the station. Their alibi checks out, but they are told to stick around for a few days. Soon a hotel housemaid is murdered, and this time Dixon is arrested, and Sydney is on her own to find the killer.

Hearing of their predicament, Sydney’s bubble-headed cousin, Ruth, and Sydney’s young charge, twelve-year-old Lydia LeBeau, show up to lend an unwelcome hand. Ruth goes undercover as a chef at the hotel. Lydia, who can talk the Pope into letting her assist in saying Mass, talks her way into the famous Pat O’Brien’s bar, where the locals are eager to share what they know.

After interviewing Mildred Threadgill’s family, Sydney begins her investigation by delving into Frank Threadgill’s mysterious past and discovers that he isn’t who he claims to be. The business he once owned was a cover involving an organization of WWII war criminals and the local Ku Klux Klan. As Sydney gets closer to the truth, she is attacked and left for dead in a nearby swamp. With the help of a few jaunty Cajuns, Sydney makes it back to the city with enough evidence to get Dixon released. Ruth thinks she knows who the killer is. Lydia has her own theory and is convinced Ruth is wrong. Sydney doesn’t know who to trust, convinced that every witness she’s interviewed has lied. But her most shocking realization is that the biggest liar is her own future husband.

I thought I’d died and gone to Tara. I woke to see luscious green- print brocade drapery covering the floor to ceiling windows. I wanted to rip them down and do what Scarlett did in Gone With the Wind, except I don’t sew. I rubbed the sleep from my eyes and when I looked again, the drapes were still there, open to an early morning. I was not in Georgia or my little apartment on Enfield Road in Austin. I was not dreaming. I was in New Orleans in a two-room suite at the Pontchartrain Hotel with a warm pillow beside me and rumpled sheets twisted around my legs.

Light from the window cast a soft glow over the body of an Adonis with messy hair, wearing only a towel. He lifted the silver cover off of a gleaming white china platter and smiled at me. Detective Ralph Dixon, my Detective Ralph Dixon, poured me a cup of coffee and offered me a croissant.

“We’re really here,” I said.

“We are, hon. I hope I didn’t get you up too early. You drove like a demon yesterday while I slept.”

“Once my head hit this pillow, I was out.”

“If you don’t mind getting married in your work clothes—I assume you don’t want a gown—we can get the licenses and make it official before noon.”

“No flowers?”

“We can pick up some at the French Market.” He handed me my coffee.

“We’re really going to do this?”

“You changed your mind?”

“No, absolutely no. Well, no.”

He smiled. My heart melted. “Was that ‘hell no,’ or ‘well, no?’”

“Last thing I remember thinking about before falling asleep was my name. I like the sound of Sydney Lockhart.”
“Oops. This doesn’t sound good. We can wait.”
“No, no. I’m ready with the ‘I do.’ But Sydney Dixon sounds

so odd.”
“Don’t change your last name. Leave it. I met Sydney Lockhart and you will always be Sydney Lockhart. Anything else bothering you?”

“I don’t have a ring for you.”
“We’ll stop at a jewelry store, or I’ll use a rubber band.” “You make things so easy.”
“They are. Sit up.” He fluffed my pillows and brought the

breakfast tray and placed it between us. “I’m glad we decided to come here. I’ve only been to New Orleans twice. The first time was with some of my college buddies. As you might expect, we had a raucous weekend.”

“You?”

“Wasn’t my thing, but yeah, we partied, or they did most of the partying. I made sure we got back to the place where we were staying without being arrested. Years later, when I was in the police department in Hot Springs, I came here by myself on vacation mainly to fish and enjoy the food. It was a completely different world compared to Hot Springs. We had our gangsters and thugs, sure, and so did New Orleans, but here the atmosphere felt raw, jovial, more carefree and not so notorious. When I was a kid growing up in Hot Springs, you never knew who was going to get gunned down on the streets. Crazy times. Anyway, back then I often thought of bringing my future wife here.”

“You didn’t lie to him. You have chosen him over what you thought was your path. You’re willing to change and give up a lot for him. I see the Clarion Necklace as the final piece and kind of a closing homage to your granda. You once told me it was the piece that had eluded him again and again. Fletch will understand. Don’t get me wrong; there may be groveling and cock sucking involved but, hey, a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do.”

“If all I have to do is grovel and suck his dick, I’m down for that,” Claire said, managing to grin at her. She wasn’t at all sure that Mia was right. She hoped she was, but she couldn’t be sure.

The train was late when it arrived in Calais. They barely managed to exit the station and get a cab for the docks. Once there, they hurried to Jules’ boat.

“I was worried for a minute you weren’t going to make it,” said Jules as he helped them aboard.

“The train was late, but here we are. We’ll put our stuff away and stay below until you let us know we’re clear. Thanks again for your help.”

“It is always my pleasure.”

Once they were below, they stowed their gear and then got comfortable on the two berths. They heard Jules start the engine and untie the boat as the great rope lines hit the deck before being coiled. Slowly the boat pulled away from the dock, and they were on their way.

“I always breathe easier once we clear French waters,” said Mia.

“You know it never occurred to me—who has jurisdiction over the Channel?”

“Depends on where you are in the Channel. Some of it belongs to the French and some to the English. But there are parts that are separated by international water.”

“That must be a nightmare to tease out when there’s money to be recouped. Money always makes things trickier.”

“Sometimes it isn’t money that ups the ante, so to speak,” said a decidedly male voice without a trace of a French accent. “If the person or entity being apprehended has a string of crimes that can be attributed to them, the authorities want credit for shutting them down.”

“Ho… how did you find us?” stuttered Claire.

“Carter has gotten very adept at hunting Mia down. Why don’t you come up on deck? It’s a lovely evening.”

“I can’t believe Jules betrayed us,” said Mia.

“For what it’s worth, he didn’t do it for money or for notoriety. He is, after all, French; he did it for love and romance. Once he knew Claire was mine and was just confused about her loyalties, he was only too happy to help.

“I’m not telling you shit. You’d be merciless.”

“Fine, I’ll get Declan to tell me.” Her confidence makes me want to smile.

“How? He wouldn’t betray me for anything.”

“Look at this face.” She points towards her nose as if I haven’t been staring at her this whole time. “You don’t think my adorable little face couldn’t get him to squeal?”

I narrow my eyes at her. “You wouldn’t.”

“Watch me.” She takes off running toward the warehouse. Surprise causes me to falter, then I’m running after her, my legs eating up the distance in no time. She looks over her shoulder, her eyes lighting up when she finds me chasing her.

I get two steps away from her when I reach out to grab her around the middle. She squeals, her laughter ringing out as she wiggles to get out of my hold.

“Oh, no you don’t,” I huff out with a laugh. I go to lift her over my shoulder, but she’s too squirrelly. She relaxes her body, her weight dropping straight to the ground. I lose my footing with the sudden change, heading toward the ground like a fallen oak tree.

Twisting at the last second, I land on my shoulder, then roll over to my back, pulling Thia with me to keep her from hitting the ground.

Her eyes are wide, sparkling with humor and surprise. “I thought you were supposed to be some badass Marine, and you just got taken down by a girl with no training.”

My mouth pops open in surprise. “You little shit.” Before I can think, I flip us over, one hand on the back of her head, the other digging into her sides as she squeals.

“Okay, okay, okay! I give!” She squirms under me, trying to get away from my tickling fingers, all while giggling like a little girl.

I stop, holding my fingers at her side. “Take it back.” The mischievous light in her eyes makes me want to kiss her.

“Fine,” she pants. “You’re the most badass Marine who ever lived, even though you fell while chasing me.” She grins.

I throw my head back, laughing. “I hate that I can’t even be mad at you for that last quip because it’s true.”

Thia’s hand moves from my shoulder and down my arm. It’s then I’m fully aware of our position, of every part of me that’s touching her. I catch her gaze, her own realization happening at the same time as mine. The heat in her eyes sends my body careening off the edge.

I tighten the fingers speared through her hair as her hands move across my chest. It’s like fire racing through me. It’s as if she’s branding me with her touch so I’ll never be able to feel anything like it again.

A throat clearing behind me has my head whipping up. Connor looks at us with his eyebrows raised. “If you want to finish up whatever this is, I think I’ve figured out how to make the tracker work.”
