“Grams, for the millionth time, I’m not going to wear a cocktail dress and Jimmy Choos to watch a parade at the over-heated, sweaty end of June!”

“You’re the one who said ‘no’ to the sundress and the strappy sandals. That outfit would’ve looked fantastic with your snow-white hair twisted into a few soft curls. Once you turned that one down, what did you expect me to do?”

I roll my grey eyes heavenward and sigh. “Oh, I don’t know. Maybe I was living under the foolish fantasy that you would choose shorts, a T-shirt, and some comfortable canvas tennis shoes!”

“And waste all this gorgeous clothing?” Her apparition dims with disappointment.

Lying flat on the padded mahogany bench in my museum for fashion, I stare up at the cedar-lined ceiling and toss out my objection. “Look, Grams, I’m not looking to impress anyone. I’ve already landed my once-in-a-lifetime guy.”

Ghost-ma lived her life to the fullest, and that definitely included a laundry list of ex-husbands — with no regrets. She passed on her joie de vivre to me, but I prefer to keep my list to one.

“Don’t be so quick to judge, sweetie. No one knows what the future holds.”

“Grams! I feel like we’ve had this discussion more times than necessary. You know the rules! If these lips aren’t moving, you’re not allowed to comment. Absolutely no thought-dropping.”

Before I can continue my lecture, our resident fur baby slinks out from under the bench, rises on his powerful hind legs, and drops something on my bare leg.

The feel of it against my skin is unpleasant, and I tilt my head up from the bench to get a better look . . .

Murder To My Ears (An Octavia Fields Mysteries) by Rebecca McKinnon Book Tour!

About Murder to My Ears

Murder To My Ears (An Octavia Fields Mysteries) Cozy Mystery

1st in Series Independently Published (June 30, 2023)

Print Length 260 pages

Octavia Fields should know better than to judge things by their appearance. After all, most people don’t expect a nomadic hippie to be a classical violist—let alone one who runs a seasonal music shop at Aerie Pines, the summer home of the Aerie Peaks Symphony.

But when her business season starts off on the wrong note, it’s obviously the persnickety concertmaster’s fault. If he hadn’t turned up dead—leaving Octavia to find his body— she wouldn’t have to deal with the handsome detective who isn’t sure what to think of her impressive arrest record.

With symphony members cornering Octavia to pass on “evidence” by way of sotto-voce rumors, it shouldn’t surprise her to learn the helpful musicians aren’t the only ones who believe Octavia’s helping with the investigation. When a threatening letter arrives, it’s clear the killer thinks she’s playing harmony to the detective, too.

When the detective doesn’t appear to be making progress on the case, Octavia decides it’s up to her to solve the mystery—before the killer hears their cue to silence her!

About Rebecca McKinnon

Celticlady's Reviews

This is the opening of Chapter Nine, set in 1968. Betty is the landlady of Hummingbird House and is awakened by a noise. Arthur is the new tenant of the basement flat, and Robert was the previous occupant, along with his girlfriend, Sandra. Unusually for the time, they had lived as an unmarried couple before splitting and moving out. Sandra has now been missing for over two weeks.

At first, she thought it was a part of her dream. The banging. It popped into her sleep so that she found herself imagining she was hammering nails of a sudden. Then, as she stirred, she realised there were also voices. Men. One muffled, one angry.

It was Arthur, yelling at the foot of the stairs.

She jumped up, suddenly alert, and grabbed her gold, quilted robe from the back of her bedroom door. She made her way to the landing and flipped the light switch, peeping her head around the top of the stairs to see what the commotion was below, but she could see nothing bar the faint shadows of someone moving in the dark. She started to descend.

“One last chance!” Arthur yelled, staccato. “Stop now, or I shall call the Police.”

He squatted down at the front door, calling through the letterbox, brown and orange paisley print pyjamas open to the waist. Through the speckled, frosted glass, a dark figure loomed outside, periodically hammering on the door. Betty walked up to Arthur, expecting him to jump as she touched his shoulder, but instead, he reached his left arm up instantly, placing one warm hand over hers.

“We have nothing you want here. And now you’ve woken the whole household. There are women here, for heaven’s sake.”

“What’s… what on earth is happening?” she asked softly.

Fragments of a man’s face appeared on the other side of the letterbox, one after another—a jigsaw of a person. An ear, dark hair flopping down, then eyes, wild and frantic, and finally a stubble-edged mouth, wet, grotesque, trying to find its way inside the house.

“Betty? Betty! Let me in. Please!”

“Who is this fool?” Arthur asked, turning towards her. He remained kneeling on the floor, turning so that his face was in line with her belly. His top gaped open, his chest broader than she expected, with short blond hair forming a patch in a butterfly shape from nipple to nipple. She found herself taking a step back instinctively.

“I…”

“Betty. Tell him. It’s me! Rob.”

*

She filled the teapot when Arthur came into the kitchen, now buttoned up. The ease with which he wandered about her space unsettled her.

“Drugs?” he whispered. He stood just inches away.

“I assumed he was blotto.” She shrugged. Drugs hadn’t occurred to her.

“Drunk? I don’t know. His eyes are like saucers. I’m no expert, but….” He leant back against the counter. “Has he done this before? Does he… does he come around like this?”

She turned to face him. “Absolutely not.”

“Good, good.”

“I’m not in the habit of having squiffy gentleman callers in the small hours.”

“Oh, oh no. That’s not what I meant at all. I just…”

She stirred the tea in the pot.

“Would you get the milk, please? Cream jug.” Here he was in her kitchen again, though this time, she found herself strangely irritated, and she couldn’t quite determine why.

“Gladly.” He moved away. “I shall stay, of course. But would you prefer me to get decent?”

“Dressed? It seems to me that it would be pointless at this stage. Besides, it’s almost three am.”

He didn’t answer, reaching past her to pick up a tray. There was that scent again—his spicy cologne.

“I’ll do that.” She could hear the tightness in her voice. “You go and sit with Robert.”

A Buckeye Falls Novel #3 by Libby Kay Book Tour!

Falling Again

A Buckeye Falls Novel #3

by Libby Kay

Genre: Sweet Contemporary Romance

Welcome back to Buckeye Falls, Ohio!
Does this small town mayor have the political savvy to negotiate his way back into his wife’s heart?

From the outside, Mayor Anthony Snyder and his wife Natalie have it all. Adorable children, a lovely home, and a never-ending supply of free food from the local diner. But behind closed doors, this duo struggles to stay connected. The sparkle they show Buckeye Falls has turned a little dull on the home front.

Over the last decade, things became hectic in the Snyder household. Anthony was elected to office, following in his father’s footsteps. Unfortunately, he’s reminded regularly that these are big shoes to fill. Being the best mayor takes a lot of time—time he’s not spending with his family.

Natalie prides herself on being everything to everyone, but the job of a wife hasn’t been smooth sailing. Wrapped up in her own growing business and their kids’ activities, her time with Anthony has dwindled faster than her secret stash of Halloween candy. Natalie longs for quality time with the man she loves, but it never seems to be in the cards.

A chance to visit their family lake house promises a week away from it all, but can these two reconnect when there’s no distractions? Or is it time for these high achievers to admit that love might be the one thing they can’t master?

With a little help from the residents of Buckeye Falls, this power couple will find their way back to happily ever after.

Falling Again is the third book in the Buckeye Falls series, but it can be enjoyed as a standalone read. Featuring similar marriage conflicts as in Lyssa Kay Adams’ The Bromance Book Club and the small-town romance of Susan Mallery’s Fool’s Gold series, fans will love this second chance love story. After all, who doesn’t deserve to fall in love again?

Natalie quotes:

“Anthony saw me topless, and vice versa, for the first time in ages yesterday.”

Ginny raised an eyebrow. “Isn’t that a good thing?”

“It would be if we’d done anything about it. Both times we were cleaning up after the kids and didn’t even acknowledge it happened. Or I guess that it didn’t happen.”

Ginny paused, clearly unsure how to continue. “Has it been a while since you two—” she swirled her mug in the air, gesturing for Natalie to finish the sentence. Apparently, her friend wasn’t going easy on her this morning.

“Had sex? Yes. It’s been a while. It’s been so long that I don’t even remember the basic mechanics of the deed. And don’t even ask me when it was. Sometime between Otis’s conception and last Thursday.” Natalie sank back in her chair and groaned. “This is bad.”

*

Placing her hand over his mouth to shut him up, Natalie shook her head. “Stop that. You are a wonderful husband and father. Just because we hit a rough patch doesn’t mean all the ways you love us don’t shine through.” Beneath her hand, Anthony sighed. He sounded so defeated; she wanted to wrap him in a blanket and hide him from the world. “I’ve made some mistakes too. You’re not allowed to play the blame game alone. It’s a two-player game.” Lowering her hand, she saw a little smirk cross Anthony’s face before he sighed again.

“You’re letting me off too easily, Nat.”

“I don’t think so. I’m trying to give you some grace. I think we both deserve a little of that, don’t you?”

*

“Thank you,” Anthony breathed.

Natalie frowned. “For what?”

“For all of this. For listening, for not running away.”

Natalie snorted. “I would never run away. Even when I’m exhausted and frustrated, I always want to come home. It never occurred to me to run away.” Anthony flashed her a weak smile before pulling her into a crushing embrace. Since they’d arrived on the island, his hugs were bordering on bear traps, like he was afraid she’d slip away. Reiterating her point, Natalie added, “I’m not going anywhere.”

For a moment neither of them moved. Anthony’s face showed a myriad of emotions that Natalie couldn’t decipher, but she knew he would share when he was ready. He’d already shared so much. Slowly his grip on her loosened and he eased back. “I want to make this work. I don’t know how, but I need us to figure this out.”

Natalie nodded, turning to refill her coffee. She probably could use something stronger, but caffeine would at least keep them talking. “So let’s figure it out.” Her tone was sharp, much like when she scolded the kids or chastised a work vendor. “We are two type-A people, and I think it’s high time we acted like it and found a solution.”

*

For a fleeting moment, Natalie feared they were jumping back into bed too quickly. They had only scratched the surface of what they needed to talk about, but the tension in her belly wouldn’t allow her brain to function. Get him naked, get him naked chanted her brain. Talk was cheap, but making love to her husband on a weekday morning was priceless.

Young and quiet, Lucy Granger leads an introverted life in Reading, living in a flat and working in design at a graphics company—until it is upended when she both sells her idea for a mobile game and suffers an unexpected medical diagnosis shortly afterwards.

Facing a mandated medical rest period, she decides to use her windfall earnings to take a year's holiday, renting a farm on New Moon Lane in a country village in Yorkshire. As Lucy settles into her holiday home for some tranquility, she soon learns that she is not the only tenant, when a llama named Llarry strolls out of the farm's supposedly-derelict barn. He is shortly followed by others in a menagerie of abandoned animals left behind—from a sickly donkey who likes eating crisps to a flirtatious cockerel sleeping in the back garden.

To Lucy's consternation, no one is willing or able to take them on, leaving her with a strange mix of furry and feathered friends to find homes for. Reluctantly adapting to her circumstances in order to deal with this problem, Lucy will discover other surprises about the animals in her care, and the place she is temporarily calling home. The Warriors’ Prize –  Chapter One, Avelina and Lachlan’s wedding night

Caught up in the rush, Avelina was in her chamber before she knew it. Lachlan was thrown in just moments later, his men louder than ever, full of cheer, even as he pushed the door firmly shut against them, smiling as their shouts grew gradually quieter, the draw of more wine in the hall thankfully more appealing than trying to listen at the door. Completely alone now, Avelina felt any final shreds of confidence threaten to melt away. This was a necessary evil, she thought, as she and Lachlan stood as far apart from each other as they could in the bedchamber. But also, the final act that would steal away her independence.

“I hope you found today… satisfactory?” There was a tremor to Lachlan’s voice that she couldn’t quite place.

“Of course. And you?” The attempt to engage in casual conversation was ridiculous; there was only one thing which needed to be achieved this night, and the quicker it was done, the better. She cursed her own impatience. Lachlan was a handsome man; he had demonstrated flashes of charm this last couple of days, and of course, she knew he was agile and light on his feet. All the evidence suggested that in another lifetime, this night should have been one she anticipated with joy. But instead she was wishing it away, angry and ashamed that her wedding night was nothing more than an essential piece of business – the final signature on a deal she had had no part in the bargaining of. Avelina realised Lachlan wasn’t answering her. “What is it?”

“You don’t want this, do you?”

If he was going to ask blunt questions, she would give him blunt answers. “No. I do not.”

Sighing, her new husband sank down in the chair by the window. Her chair. The one she sat in when the weather wasn’t good enough for her to head up to the rooftop, and she needed to escape from her duties for an hour or two. It was the smallest thing, but it was too much. As he leaned forward and untied his boots, Avelina felt something inside her snap.

“No!” The anger in her voice surprised her as much as it did Lachlan, if his slight flinch was to be believed. “This is too much. My home, my people, my land, my bedchamber, and now, my chair!”

“Avelina…” Lachlan started, glancing nervously at the door.

“No,” she repeated. “I did not consent to this. None of it. I am not simply a trophy to be given away like the spoils of battle. What will you take next, I wonder? Cut off my head to mount on the wall – my wall – to show off to King James and the others? I am nothing but a stepping-stone to this castle. To your own ambitions. I know it would suit your purposes if I was to simply wander out into the wilderness and be found dead in a ditch somewhere!” There was nothing Avelina could do to stop her thoughts progressing so wildly, even if she had wanted to. “I know your type. I know that you and the courtly cronies care about nothing more than status. So go on – take it all; you have anyway. Take the chair. Burn it, for all my opinion will count any more. No matter at all that I have built this place up from almost the edge of nothing since I inherited it, that I have the trust of the tenants and my household, that I have turned everything around. Just take it. Take my glory, take everything.”

“Avelina,” Lachlan repeated, clearly fighting to keep his voice calm. “Please, I’m not trying to take anything.”

“Of course you’re not, because you don’t have to ‘try’ at all. It simply all ‘is’ yours, thanks to a ceremony which didn’t even last an hour. That’s it. Less than an hour to undo years of my work, and hand it all over to a man who barely even knows me, who has hardly said a word to me beyond seeking shelter for him and his men. Was I even the only one? Did you just visit as many heiresses as you could, to see which you might ask James for? Did your forays extend to widows? Or even wives? How far would you have gone to get the one you wanted? Arrange an unfortunate accident for some unsuspecting husband, if he had happened to own the land you saw as most suitable?” She was horrified at what she was accusing him of, but she couldn’t stop now.

Lachlan was gaping at her.

“That’s what you think of me? Fine, I understand you might be against the marriage, against me in general, but do you think I could stoop so low as to kill for land, for a castle?” He had been retying his boots as she shouted at him, pulling the laces so hard Avelina had thought they would snap. “I…” He stopped.

“What?”

He shook his head. “Nothing. Nothing worth the telling, if that’s what you think of me. Why should I even try? I had hoped we could at least get through tonight with civility?”

“There is no ‘tonight’. Not for me. You can tell your men what you like, tell them I was insatiable, that we didn’t sleep all night, I don’t care. There’d be no chance of annulment, not with this being the King’s wish, so what does it matter what truly happens here tonight?” Without another word, Avelina pulled the extra pillows and cushions that Fiona had lined her bed with into a double-width bolster down the middle of the space, and, pausing only to remove her jewels and shoes, climbed onto her side of it, her back resolutely turned to Lachlan, refusing to flinch even when she heard the door open and then slam behind him.

Jennifer has been stalking dead monarchs since she was a child. It started with Mary, Queen of Scots, then moved onto Richard III. At least now it results in a story!

She won North Tyneside Libraries' Story Tyne short story competition in 2014 (no dead monarchs, but still not a cheerful read), and has been filling notebooks and hard-drives ever since. Her Kindred Spirits series, following the 'lives' of some very interesting ghostly communities, is published by Darkstroke, and her historical romances by Ocelot Press.

Jennifer is currently exploring some new ideas for historical romance, and hoping to visit Kindred Spirit friends old and new, north of the border...
