Extract from All Change at the Beach Hotel by Francesca Capaldi

Lili, originally a chambermaid in the Beach Hotel, has recently been made a waitress, what with all the men going off to war. Today, she feels even more privileged to be ‘sort of’ in charge on the front desk. But things don’t quite work out as she’d hoped…

The front entrance opened and Lili looked over to see Gertie struggling in with two cases, in a plume of smoke. She was trying not to cough, judging by the expression on her face.

Behind her was a woman who looked in her early thirties, dressed in a burgundy high-waisted linen dress with elbow-length sleeves and turnback cuffs. The skirt had a long loose hanging tunic, divided in front, which was embroidered. How Lili would love such a dress. The woman’s dark-brown wavy hair was gathered in a coil at the back and around her head was a silk band with pink flowers. A cigarette, in a holder, was held elegantly between her fore and middle fingers.

Mrs Lolita Carmichael, if she wasn’t mistaken. She’d stayed for a month a couple of years back with her parents, though she’d been Miss Foster then. Mrs Bygrove had mentioned that she’d booked a stay, though Lili hadn’t realised she’d be turning up while she was on the desk.

‘Come along, girl. Either move more quickly or get out of the way.’ She knocked into Gertie as she passed her, causing the portress to stumble a little.

At the desk, the woman stubbed out her cigarette in the ashtray and placed the end in it. She took another from her handbag to replace it in the holder.

‘Damn it, I seem to have misplaced my lighter. You, girl –’ She pointed at Gertie. ‘Retrace our steps and find it. I hope I didn’t drop it in the horse bus.’

‘Yes, Mrs Carmichael,’ Gertie replied politely, though Lili could tell she was annoyed. She left the cases by the desk and hurried outside.

Lili didn’t blame her for being irritated. As Stanley, who was a porter, had put it, last time she’d stayed she’d been a bit of a pain in the… neck came to mind, though it wasn’t what Stanley had said. He’d got a right telling off from the housekeeper, Mrs Leggett, for saying it in front of the female staff at supper a few evenings back.

‘Good morning. I’m Mrs Lolita Carmichael,’ she said this with a flourish, as if the name was immensely significant. ‘Since neither the usual desk clerks nor the manager appear to be here, I suppose you will have to accommodate me. I hope you’re up to it. I need to be reminded of the mealtimes and any other information I need to know.’ She peered at Lili more closely. ‘Good gracious, weren’t you a chambermaid when I was here last?’

She was amazed Mrs Carmichael remembered her at all, though not pleased with the implication that such a person was beneath her contempt. ‘Yes, madam. There’s a war on and most of the men have enlisted. I’m afraid the usual desk clerks are off duty and Mr and Mrs Bygrove are out.’

The woman pointed and looked down at Lili. ‘I beg your pardon? I can’t understand a word you’re saying. Where on earth are you from?’

‘Wales, madam. The Rhymney Valley.’

‘Wales, was that? Well, no wonder. I don’t know why people can’t all speak the King’s English, instead of all these silly accents.’

Had Lily not spoken to her when she was here last? Possibly not, since she’d simply been cleaning the rooms. And she’d put on her more ‘proper’ accent, as Mrs Leggett referred to it. They all had to when serving the public. Lili felt the indignation growing. It wasn’t the first time she’d encountered such prejudice against her accent and place of birth, but for now she’d have to swallow the irritation and get on with the job.

She opened the register in front of her. ‘Here we are. Room 208 on the second floor. Lovely view of the sea. If you’d like to take a seat, Gertrude will take you there when she returns.’

‘What's that?’ Mrs Carmichael put a hand up to her ear. ‘Speak more clearly, will you?’

‘I said,’ she started more slowly, ‘if… you’d… like… to

‘No, it’s no good. You’ll have to get someone else to attend me. One of the usual receptionists.’

‘Neither are here.’

‘Or the manager, or his wife.’

‘As I said, they’re not here either.’

‘Well then, whomever is in charge, you insolent girl.’

She understood that then. Lili couldn’t see what was insolent about her replies, but if she didn’t get out of Mrs Carmichael’s presence soon, she’d be severely tempted to give her a piece of her Gertie! Thank goodness she’d returned.

‘I found your lighter, madam. It was on—’

The woman snatched the offered item. ‘About time.’

‘Gertrude, would you fetch Mrs Leggett please?’ Mrs Carmichael surely couldn’t object to the housekeeper’s middle-class accent.

‘Why?’

Lili widened her eyes in appeal. ‘Please.’

Gertie nodded and headed off.

‘One moment, madam.’

‘I’d better not be kept waiting.’ She sauntered elegantly over to one of the Sheraton chairs by the wall, lighting her cigarette and crossing her legs once she’d sat down.

It was strange how Mrs Carmichael seemed to understand her when it suited. More likely she was enjoying having something to be superior about.

After a couple of minutes, Gertie returned, not with Imogen Leggett but with Bridget Turnbull, the storekeeper.

‘What’s the problem, pet?’ she said in her Tyneside accent.

‘Where’s Mrs Leggett?’

‘She said she were busy and sent me.’

By this time, Mrs Carmichael had stood up and was returning to the desk. Lili, guessing what was coming, felt like laughing. It wasn’t really funny, but by the time she related it to Edie, hopefully it would be.

Writing as both Francesca Capaldi and Francesca Burgess, she has had many short stories published in magazines in the UK and abroad, along with several pocket novels published by DC Thomson.

Her Welsh World War 1 sagas were inspired by the discovery of the war record of her great grandfather, a miner in South Wales. Her latest series, The Beach Hotel, is set in her own childhood town, where her Italian father had a café on the riverside.

Life and Death in Ephesus by Finlay McQuade Blog Tour! @thecoffeepotbookclub@cathiedunn

Book Title: Life and Death in Ephesus (A Short Story Collection)

Author: Finlay McQuade

Publication Date: June 13, 2023

Publisher: Historium Press

Page Length: 257

Genre: Historical fiction

For over a thousand years, Ephesus, on the Aegean coast of what is now Turkey, was a thriving city. It was the site of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Wonders of the World, and a destination for religious pilgrimage long before the advent of Christianity. In the first century CE, St. John and St. Paul introduced Christianity to Ephesus, where it survived its turbulent beginnings and, in the fifth century CE, hosted the God-defining Council of Ephesus.

Life and Death in Ephesus is a collection of stories about major events in the history of Ephesus. Characters appearing in these stories include Herostratus, first to commit a “herostratic crime”; Alexander, the warrior king; Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, both lovers of Cleopatra; Heraclitus, the philosopher who said, “You can’t put your foot in the same river twice”; St. Paul, persona non grata in Ephesus; Nestorius, whose characterization of Jesus split the Eastern and Western church, and others, also important, whose names I have had to make up.

Hilke Thür, a leading archeologist, has said of these stories, “Life and Death in Ephesus will be a delightful and enjoyable accompaniment to the many available guidebooks. Not just tourists, but anyone interested in history will benefit from reading them.”

Excerpt 5 from Life and Death in Ephesus

From “Nestorius.”

The next day, sure enough, the church of the Evangelist was half empty, but the murmurs of protest were twice as loud as the hissing and whispering of the day before. Even so, Nestorius persisted. Desperate to demonstrate the simple logic of his argument, he introduced a new metaphor into his sermon:

“Ferment the grape and what do you get? You get a sublime wine that buoys your spirit and lifts you heavenward. Squeeze the olive and what do you get? You get a taste of ancient earth, a hint of delight first tasted in the Garden by our earliest ancestors. But when you mix the two, what do you get? The sublime headiness of wine? No. The rich earthiness of Eden? No. You get a noxious mixture that retains the qualities of neither. Such is not the nature of Jesus Christ.

“Jesus was a man and had all the qualities of a man, including the capacity to suffer and die. And he was also and always will be a God, who did not die and did not fear the pains of death as you and I inevitably will. Our Lord Jesus Christ had two natures, the one human and the other divine. The blessed Virgin gave birth to the one, but she did not give birth to the other, because the Son of God already existed and had always existed. That is why I have said and I say again that the blessed Virgin was the Christ-bearer, not the God-bearer. And yet, from that miraculous moment of Incarnation, the God and the man were united as one: human and divine in perfect union.”

It seemed at first to have made an impression on his audience, for they were quiet. Later, on reflection, he thought that perhaps they were dazzled by the clarity of his argument, but no closer to accepting its truth. Then a scrawny little monk with a red clean-shaven face in the pew nearest to the altar stood and shouted in a deep bass voice, “HERETIC! HERETIC!” and continued to shout it until he was joined by a scattering of others in the dim interior of the church, and gradually by just about everyone present, “HERETIC! HERETIC! HERETIC!”

Finlay McQuade is a retired educator. He was born in Ireland, went to high school in England, and university in the USA. He has a BA in English from Pomona College, an MA in British and American literature from Harvard University, and a PhD in education from the University of Pittsburgh, where he also taught writing courses in the English department. He spent some happy years as a high school English teacher and soccer coach, but after co-authoring the book How to Make a Better School he found himself in demand as a consultant to schools and school improvement projects in the USA and often, also, abroad. He ended his career in education when he retired from Bogazici University in Istanbul, where he had mentored young teachers in the school of education.

For eight years after retirement, he lived in Selcuk, Turkey, among the ruins of the ancient city of Ephesus. The streets and squares of Ephesus became his neighborhood. His companions included archeologists, tour guides, and souvenir sellers. His curiosity about the people who had lived in those empty buildings for over a thousand years resulted in Life and Death in Ephesus, a collection of stories chronicling major events in the city’s history.

Now, back in the USA with time on his hands, he finds himself returning again and again to memories of his boyhood on the coast of Northern Ireland. The result of these forays into his past will be another collection of stories, part memoir, part fiction, called Growing Up in Ulster.

They need each other, yet they don't even like each other.

Every Rejection You Make

Faerell Book 2, Rejected Mates Collection

by TJ Bell

Genre: Paranormal Fantasy Romance

The Usurper has been captured. The rightful queen has claimed her throne. Faerell, the land of the fae and wolves, is once again safe.

Faery Warrior Tessa should be celebrating. Instead, she’s climbing a mountain with a wolf wanna-be Warrior and a prisoner no one trusts, and she’s humiliated by the treachery of her ex-partner.

As if that weren’t enough, the wolf wanna-be Warrior, Rollo, saved her life, so now she’s beholden to him.

Which is a problem, because she’s also attracted to him.

Which is a bigger problem because she doesn’t even like him.

This is the second book in the Faerell series. For the most enjoyable reading experience, it is recommended to read the books in order.

Once Rejected, Twice Shy

Faerell Book 1, Rejected Mates Collection

Faith Calhoun was almost forty when she walked in on her husband screwing someone else.

Talk about a terrible way to end what had admittedly not been an iconic decade of her life.

After serving him divorce papers—on her birthday—she heads straight to her favorite bar, where the ultra-hot bartender plies her with drinks to take the edge off.

They end up tumbling into bed together.

That part’s not bad—in fact, it’s really, really good—except in the morning, he rejects her too, and somehow, that rejection is even worse than the first one. Especially when he insists he needs to remain in her life to ensure she’s protected.

From what? Her gossipy neighbors?

Oh, and let’s not forget all the strange occurrences that are getting harder and harder to explain away.

First, there’s a wolf in her house. A real, live, massive wolf. Then the house is attacked and nearly destroyed by some unknown—and unseen—enemy, and, get this, the wolf saves her. Then the bartender tells her he’s a wolf too. It’s like something out of her favorite shifter romance novel—except she’s living it!

And then there’s the icing on the cake: Mikail, the bartender-slash-wolf, tells her she’s a faery princess.

Maybe this week isn’t so bad after all.

If you overlook the reason he kept her identity a secret: the enemies she didn’t know she had want to kill her, and now that she’s been outed.

Her bad week is about to get a whole lot worse.

TJ Bell is the naughtier alter-ego of romance author Tami Lund (although you should totally read Tami Lund’s books too, because they are really, really good). TJ Bell writes paranormal and fantasy romance, all the time. Her heroines are tough, even if they are broken, and her heroes tend to have a heart of gold under all that alpha. Hell, sometimes they aren’t even alpha at all; after all, who doesn’t love a solid beta hero?

When she isn’t writing snarky, steamy books, TJ Bell likes to take long walks on the beach with a tall glass of wine… oh wait, wrong bio. But still true.

TJ Bell lives in the (sometimes) beautiful state of Michigan, USA, where the weather is glorious approximately 30% of the time, with her even-more-snarky husband, snarky-in-training (and progressing impressively) teenage daughter, and her dog, Kaya, who wants to know if it’s dinnertime yet.

Excerpt from Paws and Order

Sheila does not understand. I know we’re not supposed to play favorites with our humans, but we all do. Fred and I had a connection that was … special. I’ve tried communicating with Sheila, but— Okay this part is a little embarrassing. Every time I tap her hand with my paw, she thinks I want food or a belly rub. Which, of course, I do. I ALWAYS want food or a belly rub. Or both. But I’m trying to tell her something important, and all of a sudden, she puts those fingernails to work on my belly and I’m gone. Lost. A zombie. It feels sooooo good. Whatever I needed to say is up in smoke, my eyes are closed, and I hear a Karen Carpenter love song in my head.

Don’t judge me.

The Rose of Florence
Angela M. Sims
Publication date: March 23rd 2023
Genres: Adult, Historical, Romance

Prologue (1460):
Gianetta is born in a farmhouse in Fiesole. Her mother dies in childbirth. The unnamed father is distraught but leaves her in the care of her grandmother and returns home.

The Story (1478):
Gianetta grows up and moves to Florence, where she is in service to a wealthy family of textile merchants – the Rosini. They are friends to and supporters of the powerful Medici clan. In the small, tight-knit group of staff, we meet Eleonora (cook), Luigi (Signor Francesco Rosini’s private assistant), Antonio and Lucia and our hero, Matteo. Gianetta and Matteo are in love and have a happy, peaceful life with the kind and generous Rosini family. They enjoy entertaining at Palazzo Rosini, where the Medici and Botticelli are frequent visitors.

Following the suspected poisoning of Lorenzo de’ Medici and near death of Giuliano de’ Medici, both within the Rosini family home, there is suspicion that there is a traitor in the house and speculation as to who it might be.

In Botticelli’s workshop (where Matteo worked previously), there is discussion about unrest in Florence with rumours in the city that Medici days in power are numbered, and there may be trouble at Easter.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo

EXCERPT:

Setting the scene: Matteo is a manservant in Palazzo Rosini, and Cesare Conti is a guest at the family banquet that night, but clearly, they have come across each other before…

Matteo remained behind to make sure that all the guests’ cloaks were hanging neatly and away from the fire, so that they didn’t smell of smoke by the end of the evening. He hadn’t noticed a figure standing quietly behind him until he heard a slight cough. Turning round, he almost bumped straight into Cesare Conti. He had been half expecting this but had hoped to avoid a direct conversation with him.

“Signor Conti,” he said, with a small bow. “Can I help you?”

“Oh, I think you have already helped me enough, don’t you?” The young man’s piercing green eyes looked directly at Matteo. Then, as if the sun had come out, Cesare broke into a beaming smile and put his arm around Matteo.

“I just wanted to thank you…for last week. What a coincidence that you should be passing, just as I was leaving that place.”

“I have to pass it occasionally when I am running errands for Eleonora. What goes on there is no concern of mine, ser.” Matteo was uncomfortable and hoped that was the end of the conversation. He made to move towards the stairs, but Cesare’s grip tightened.

“We are grown men…er…”

“Matteo, ser.”

“We are grown men, Matteo. Women serve a purpose from time to time. Indeed, some are very beautiful, but some of us also have other needs, which must be satisfied. Sadly, the city looks on some of those needs as vices, the “Florentine vice”, I believe some call it.” He shook his head, sadly. “Whatever the rights or wrongs of the situation, I could have been arrested that day. You could have turned me in to the guard, and the life I have now would have been over. But you didn’t, and I wondered why.”

“It’s none of my business, ser. As I said, I pass that place often, and who I see going in or coming out is no concern of mine.”

Cesare raised an eyebrow. “I suspect you hold many secrets, Matteo.” He paused, as if deciding his next words carefully. Then he shone his beaming smile at Matteo. “Thank you, Matteo. Your discretion is noted and appreciated. I…” He paused, “…won’t forget it.” With a last glance, Cesare turned on his heel and bounded up the stairs to the dining room.

Author Bio:

The Rose of Florence is my first novel, borne of a love for the history, art and city of Florence, grown over many years. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed researching and writing it.

My background is in healthcare, and I have been a University lecturer since 2010. My writing experience was limited to a Masters dissertation, purely academic, but the research skills I learned during that process were soon put to use in researching my favourite topic, the Italian Renaissance. It didn’t take long before the seeds of a story began to germinate, and The Rose of Florence blossomed.

I joined the Romantic Novelists’ Association (RNA) and the New Writers’ Scheme (NWS) in 2020 and found the encouragement and resources available taught me so much about the process and skills needed to write fiction. I have been lucky enough to have the support of the same NWS reviewer since joining, and her advice and guidance has proven invaluable, and I am now a contender for the RNA Joan Hessayon Award 2023 for debut authors.

I am also a member of the Society of Authors.
