From a Youth a Fountain Did Flow

The Fountain of Youth Book 1

by Miranda Levi

Genre: YA Dark Urban Fantasy Horror

Supernatural meets The Raven Boys in this thrilling young adult fantasy horror novel about a girl who has lost everything and finds herself in the center of a war between witches and demons. In a world where anything is possible, can she find the things that keep her human? Or is she doomed to a dark destiny?

Love. Fate. Courage. Darkness.

Thrust into a timeless battle between an ancient network of witches and the demon underbelly who will stop at nothing to possess her regenerating body. Scarlet Singer must decide what is worth fighting for in this life. Love, fate, and a greater destiny are all at stake.

When Scarlet stumbles upon a poem written in a journal for her more than a hundred-and-fifty years earlier, she must face her greatest fears and accept the possibility that she is the fountain of youth personified.

Only a Telepath named Marcus and a Void named Zig stand between Scarlet and the battle over her future. Whom can she trust when both sides have enough reason to end her? If any of them knew the truth, her life would be forfeit.

Praise for From a Youth A Fountain Did Flow

"Pursued by demons, a teenage girl must confront darkness and a terrible destiny in Levi’s YA fantasy novel. In Washington State,17-year-old Scarlet Singer is haunted by nightmarish shadows and a feeling of wrongness. Her bad dreams come true when her home is invaded by a monster in the guise of a man. Her mother sacrifices herself to give her daughter time to escape, and a teenage telepath named Marcus Castillo is drawn to Scarlet, sensing her distress. His grandmother, a witch named Kara, accompanies him and slaughters the demonic killer with magic, and Scarlet’s perception of reality is forever changed (“I know magic isn’t real, and demons are like fairytales designed to scare children. Except, I am now swayed to the argument that demons are real, and magic seems to exist despite my reservations”). Packed with demons, humans reduced to “meat suits,” blood-letting and blood-drinking, witches, telepathy, time-shifting, and supernatural realms reachable through magic portals, the novel is never dull. The abundance of fantasy and horror tropes could have been overkill, but the author weaves them into a neat twist on the concepts of the fountain of youth and reincarnation. The catalyst is the 19th-century journal of a young woman named Kelby, which causes Scarlet, sheltered by a powerful Witches Council, to begin to wonder who—and what—she is, leaving her with a secret she can’t share, hunted by demons and ostensible friends alike. Throughout, Scarlet’s closeness to Witches Council members Marcus and the handsome Zig complicates things... The author effectively keeps the plot moving forward by shifting narratives between Scarlet, Marcus, Zig, Kelby’s journal, an enigmatic witch named Azeltha, Scarlet’s demonic nemesis, Dagon, and a few minor but essential characters. The shocker of a cliffhanger at the end signals a sequel to come. An imaginative fantasy-horror tale anchored by a relatable teen hero, engaging ..."

“A fast-paced, intriguing, richly written puzzle box of a book. Every twist and turn left me breathless. That first paragraph grabbed me and wouldn't let me go.” –Aaron Michael Ritchey, award-winning author of The Sages of the Underpass and The Cunning Man series.

"This is a captivating tale about witches and demons and a battle as old as time. It is a story of love, loss, and being captured by purpose. The main character is likable and brave, and her growth as she discovers the truth about her past and her power over the future makes a story well worth reading. I highly recommend Mrs. Levi's 'From a Youth a Fountain Did Flow'" ~Cheree Alsop, author of the Werewolf Academy series.

SCARLET

With each step, the city sucks a little more light from me. I’ve become a shriveled fraction of my former self. My insides let sorrow and darkness take hold. It grips onto my heart and seems to weave a thread through my core, sewing torn and broken pieces together again. I want to stop walking and lay down to die. But giving up is only an option for the broken. I’m patchwork now. So, I keep walking.

I’m not sure why I follow the old woman and a boy named Marcus. We walk for

twenty minutes in silence. I consider leaving, turning right when the others go left. Each

step is moving lead. I am dead weight.

I should have called the police myself. I should have stayed behind with mom. When

I think about what’s happened, it feels like lies slipping off my tongue to speak my

truth out loud. A tightness rises in me, choking out my ability to ruminate rationally.

I don’t think I would even believe it had I not witnessed it myself.

The pizza delivery guy crouched over my cat’s slain body. He looked up at me

with inhuman black eyes.

I’m going crazy.

The scene plays over and over in my brain. Like a movie on repeat, I can’t

shut off. I was backing out of the bedroom, knocking things over along the way,

stumbling into Mom as I clamber over the top of the couch to get away from

the black-eyed man.

Limp fur, black eyes, and Mom telling me to run.

I don’t let myself think past that. I don’t want to remember.

“Run.”

It is the last word Mom ever spoke to me. She looks at me with chocolate

brown eyes and points.

“Run.”

Mom’s voice is calm, collected. It’s not a question.

“Run.”

It’s not a demand either. I want Mom to grab my hand and drag us out of the house

together.

“Run.”

It’s a plea.

All I want is her, whole and perfect. To be in her warm arms one more time.

Hear her voice whisper me to a safe harbor. Only I know one more time

would never be enough. No amount of time would be.

Her screams still echo in my mind.

I can hear her begging for a savior, for someone to help her.

But nobody came.

My mom is dead, and it’s all my fault.

There she is.

Cane is positioned between a girl and a meat suit, vertical, spinning at sixty-six

miles per hour counterclockwise. Cane starts to glow. An energy field stretches

beyond the girl, encompassing her and Cane in its white light.

I move to Abuela’s side. She puts her arm out in front of me, forcing me to

take a step backward. I want to move in front of the girl—an internal need to

put me between her and the meat suit.

“What do you want, hag?” the possessed boy says. He can’t be much older than

I am, seventeen or eighteen.

“Oh, the meat suit can speak. Good for you,” Abuela takes a step closer, and so do I.

Dark trundles shadow his eyes. A red t-shirt with a Pizza Time logo clothe the

stolen body. “I will have her first. Then I’ll have you for dessert,” The meat

suit winks at Abuela, his voice silk.

Abuela smiles, “Aw, you think I’m sweet. But first, Cane, let’s see if this demon

has a heart.”

Cane moves quicker than a melting snow-cone in hell. Flesh rips away from the

body snatcher’s chest cavity leaving Cane embedded.

“You were wrong. She wasn’t the one to worry about. I am,” a wicked smile

plays at Abuela’s paper-thin lips. I start to understand why she didn’t want

me to come, why she put off my street training for this long.

Wide eyes blink back as a bloodied heart pulses its last beat.

Silence falls in the ally. My stomach turns its lunch, and I think I might hurl.

One, one, two, three, five, eight, thirteen… I take a deep breath to calm my

stomach and look away from the pizza delivery guy, away from the demon.

Dr. Randall walked over to the astronauts and looked over the suits, checking that everything was how it should be. The suits had one pocket meant for a phone so the astronauts could take pictures. Charlotte had tried sneaking a box of cigarettes and a lighter in hers, and it was immediately confiscated.

“Mom, you could have gotten us all killed,” Emma said, her lips pulled into a frown.

Once the seven astronauts boarded, the medical officer, Lori, followed. She would be the eighth passenger. Just in case.

And then, while the rest of us cheered and waved, the spacecraft started down the runway, no different than the way any other plane takes off for a flight.

Other than a final counseling session to unravel their space experience, my job was complete.

“We have two hours until they return,” Jeffrey said, walking up to me as the employees returned inside. “Want to hit up the cafeteria? It just opened.”

I glanced at my phone, not that I doubted him. Just wanted to see if we had time for both a first and second lunch before it closed again until dinner. Had to take advantage of all the amazing food, since it would all go away the next day. We’d been spoiled.

“Absolutely. I just need to run to the dorm to change into my stretchy pants.” I was mostly kidding. As we reentered the building, I asked him, “What’s it been like? Following the ‘astronauts’ around for the past few days?” I did air quotes around “astronauts.” I knew it was marketed that way, but I didn’t like that those bickering celebrities were now placed in a category with intelligent, brave men and women who had done so much good up there on the International Space Station, as well as those who had traveled farther.

I threw a backward glance toward the staff dorms when Jeffrey turned in the opposite direction down the hallway. I’d be okay without the stretchy pants. Probably.

“It was okay,” he said with a small shrug. “I really like Ace Hutchins. He always seemed like a cool guy on TV, but he is that way in real life too. I was glad to not be disappointed. I like Rachel Sinclair too. Don’t love her music—it’s nothing special. But she wasn’t in everybody’s business, like the rest of them. Julie hoped the team-building exercises would help with cohesion, but it only seemed to make it worse.”

I had missed a lot while stuck in my little office. There had been times I’d been able to sneak out and peek through windows, but most of the training exercises had been done behind closed doors, and I wasn’t supposed to interrupt.

I thought of Rachel, who was used to stepping aside so she wasn’t bowled over by the rest. After she’d left our one and only session, I’d wished she’d have returned so we could talk about some skills she could use to increase her self-confidence. Even famous singers had problems standing up for themselves, just like the rest of us.

“I take it that Charlotte was the center of the drama?”

Jeffrey opened the cafeteria door and motioned for me to enter.

“Forever and always,” a man’s voice said.

Dr. Randall appeared behind me, his gaze scanning the endless food choices. “That woman thrives on chaos, and she doesn’t care what casualties are left in her wake. The problem is that the rest of the astronauts have a love/hate relationship with her. They need her, or at least they believe they do, but they despise her for it.”

“Is it bad that I wish I hadn’t missed all of it?” I asked, feeling sheepish. “It’s like those daytime soap operas. You know they are ridiculous, but you also can’t tear yourself away. And it was all happening in real time.”

I decided on pizza for my first lunch, promising myself huevos rancheros for my second round.

“Count yourself lucky,” Dr. Randall said. “I saw zero growth in any of them. I know they paid good money to be here, but honestly, I feel like this trip has been wasted on those seven.”

“Even Serena?” I asked. “She came in to talk with me a couple of times, and even though I don’t believe in all that psychic stuff, she seemed sweet.”

“Sure. Until you tell her something she doesn’t like. I saw the claws come out a few times with her. Never directed at me, but she wasn’t about to let the others walk all over her. She placed herself in a dominant position and made sure the others respected that. I even saw her stand up to Charlotte a couple of times. Only one who did that.”

Huh. And you think you know someone from a few therapy sessions.

Jeffrey had been right. Everything had been a show.

That was a bit disappointing, and it must have shown, because Dr. Randall nudged me with his shoulder. “Don’t let it get you down. For what it’s worth, I did think she was one of the more decent guests here. She was in survival mode, that’s all.”

I nodded. That made sense.

“That Noah guy, though,” Jeffrey said, sliding onto the seat across from me at the table. “Didn’t say a word the entire three days. Only watched and didn’t participate

unless he was forced to. The others were rude, but at least they were making an effort. It was like he was too good for everyone there. I don’t know why he even came.”

Dr. Randall quietly ate his food, his gaze firmly focused on the enchilada in front of him.

He knew something. And I had a feeling it was more than just Noah’s dyslexia.

“What do you think, Dr. Randall?” I asked.

He chewed his food far slower than necessary, then swallowed. “You’re right. He doesn’t want to be here.” And then Dr. Randall stood. “You know, I think the launch took my appetite with it. I’ll see you at the landing in…” He checked his watch. “Ninety minutes.”  And then he dumped his tray and disappeared through a side door.

“That was weird, right?” Jeffrey asked, his gaze still on the door Dr. Randall had left through.

I agreed. “Very weird.”

But that was nothing compared to when the spacecraft glided onto the runway ninety minutes later, the employees cheering. A small band played to the right of us, welcoming the astronauts home. Not sure where they came from.

That wasn’t the weird part.

It was when six astronauts disembarked, instead of seven.

And then there was the scream.

ABOUT MURDER IN MYRTLE BAY

When feature writer Ruth Finlay and her elderly neighbor Doris Cleaver visit an antique and collectibles market in the small town of Myrtle Bay, they get a lot more than they bargained for.

After Ruth’s old tennis coach is found dead, they discover that there’s no lack of people who harbor a grudge against the victim, and a tangled web of family ties and lies begins to unravel. But can Ruth and Doris find the killer in time to avert a second murder?

A quirky feel-good mystery laced with intrigue, Murder in Myrtle Bay is the first book in Isobel Blackthorn’s ‘Ruth Finlay Mysteries’ series. Set in small town Australia, it is a sure pick for any fan of classic whodunits and cozy mysteries!

PRAISE FOR MURDER IN MYRTLE BAY

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ms Blackthorn’s ability to put the reader into the story – into the landscape, the buildings her characters inhabit or visit, like the antiques market, the bakery, the nursing home – keeps the reader captivated.

I loved the the road Ruth and Doris travelled to finally unmask the murderer. Doris knew from the beginning the person she loathed most in the world, was involved. I loved how surprised they were, as well as the reader, when the culprit was revealed. Amazon review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I’m usually pretty good at working out whodunnit, but the author had me baffled with this one, and kept me guessing to the end in real Christieesque fashion. An excellent read, and a new lead character worth following. 5 stars without hesitation from me. Goodreads review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The mystery behind the murder kept me guessing till the end. Suspects were plenty and so were red herrings. The events that finally lead to Ruth and Doris coming face-to-face with the killer was no less than a nail-biting scene. Speaking of killer, their identity and the reason for murder was a huge shocker. Unexpected. Goodreads review

My Thoughts

Murder at Myrtle Bay (South Wales, Australia) is the first of this cozy mystery series. Protagonists are two opposite in temperament women, neighbors who are extremely nosy of anyone and strive at all times to have a unique story or reason why they are always snooping.

In this case, Ruth Findlay and neighbor Doris Cleaver go to an antique mall, The Factory, to find the Tupperware cover that Doris is looking for. They get separated from each other and all of a sudden they find a dead body in the form of Doris's old tennis coach.

As in any small town, it thrives on gossip and secrets and the two women want to find out how the man was killed and why. Some of the residents of the town want to talk and others not, so Ruth and Doris must take things slow to find the culprit. They sift through suspects, who was at the antique mall and what were they doing there?

The Factory has a story all its own with an interesting history all of its own. Ruth is a journalist and wants to dig into the history of the factory and write an article. Not everyone wants to talk about it but Ruth's father tells an interesting story of the factory and gives Ruth lots to work with, from the history of the factory to the people that worked there and the secrets it holds.

I have read Isobel Blackthorn's books before and I do so enjoy her writing, no secrets are given until the end of the story which I like as who wants to know the ending until they need to?

Written with details that a person from a small town could understand. Enough suspense to keep the reader entertained and colorful people as protagonists. I had a few chuckles at Doris, I could just picture her from the descriptions of her, her colorful language and clothing.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in starting a cozy mystery. I give it 5 stars!

I received a copy of this book for review purposes only.

Year of the Fledgling by Linda Kage Book Blitz!

Year of the Fledgling
Linda Kage

Publication date: July 29th 2023
Genres: Fantasy, Romance, Young Adult

Theron, the Eradicator, has one job: to protect the people of Starcast by killing the deadly creatures that attack them. That’s it.

Being an Eradicator comes with a heavy price, however, for he’s strictly prohibited from having any kind of personal contact with the villagers.

But one night, he sneaks into the town’s harvest festival, anyway, and meets the lovely, young healer’s apprentice.

As Theron grows close to her, it becomes harder to tell what’s more dangerous: risking a fatal injury while battling dark ones or risking fatal punishment by beginning a secret dalliance with a forbidden girl.

In either case, doom seems to be the only outcome, and tension mounts as love and danger blur across the reach of this fantastical, seaside landscape.

She pounded on the thick door as hard and loudly as she could.

When it began to open and she had her first look at his face again—his features a mask of puzzled bewilderment—the terrible pressure in her chest finally released in a flood, and it all seemed to spill right out of her mouth.

“Wha…?” he started to ask.

But the flood had already hit her.

“I am beyond vexed with you,” she seethed, flinging off her hood so he could see the full extent of her rage before she pushed past him to enter the watchtower.

Theron glanced out into the darkening evening as if to make sure she didn’t have anyone else with her, then he shut the door and turned, lifting his eyebrows sternly. “Please tell me you did not walk up here by yourself.”

Ignoring his question, she demanded, “Honestly, how could you do this to me?”

“Are you absolutely mad?” he challenged right back, just as upset as she, and stormed forward. “What were you thinking? If someone had seen you—”

“They would’ve shrugged me off as you! But no one saw me. And I was thinking about how mad I am,” she railed, lifting her chin to meet his swirling, livid gaze.

Theron scoffed. “Yes, I can tell you’re unhappy, but that gives you no right to put your very livelihood at stake to come up here and tell me thus.”

“It’s my livelihood to worry about, and my right to risk it as I please.”

“And you are one of two people left in this entire, bleeding world that I’m allowed to still talk to. So I refuse to let you be so frivolous with your—”

“Argh!” she shrieked, lifting her hands and curling her fingers as if to display her claws at him. “You are so maddening.”

One of his eyebrows arched, then he burst out grinning. “But am I maddening enough for you to want to kiss me senseless again? Please say yes.”

She snorted. “Hardly. You’re certainly maddening enough to make me want to wring your fool neck as hard as I can, though.”

Lifting his chin to put his neck on full display, Theron countered, “Well, take your best shot, little healer-in-training. But first, would you at least tell me what I did wrong this time that made you so mad? A fellow appreciates at least knowing why he’s being strangled.”

Xia sucked in an irate breath. Then her chin trembled. And finally, the tears that she’d been holding back all the way from Norbin’s pig pen came gushing down her cheeks.

“You made me care for you!” she accused, weeping so soundly that her entire body shuddered and she had to cover her mouth with both hands to contain it.
