“And the hits keep coming,” I say as I answer the call.
Peter gives me a faux-offended look. “I’m just checking in on my dear little
brother! For all we know, your Tracey—”
“Teddie,” I answer before I can stop myself. I immediately regret opening my
mouth when Peter gives me a mischievous grin.
“Right,” he drawls. “Tawney—”
I suck on my teeth. “Pete. Petey. Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater…”
He snorts and raises an eyebrow. “I thought you were never going to call me that
again.”
“Well, you’re intentionally goading me.”
His grin quirks up at the sides. “I’d call it more of a test. You failed, by the way.”
“What? How could I fail?” I blurt out before relaxing back into my seat. “I mean, I
don’t know what you’re testing, but I’m good at taking tests. I’m quite intelligent.”
Peter shakes his head in amusement. “And yet you fall for my tricks every time. I
can’t lie, though. I rather enjoy it.”
I’m getting annoyed that he’s beating around the bush. “What was the test?”
“Well, I thought I’d check and see how you’re getting on with… Teddie.” I narrow
my eyes at him, and he rolls his before adding, “Yeah, I knew her name. And the fact
that you corrected me means you know it too.”
I lift an eyebrow. “Of course, I know it. We’ve been together for five days,
fourteen hours, and twenty-seven minutes. Give or take.”
“So, you’d say your routine has been shaken up? And how does that make you
feel?”
“Don’t lose sight of your qualifications, Peter. You’re a pencil pusher, not a
therapist.”
He shrugs. “My plan is working. I don’t care what you say. You obviously like her
since you’ve felt bothered enough to remember her name. She might be just what you
need.”

I grunt and lean back in my chair, far enough to crack my back. “What I need is
peace and quiet. What I need is time alone. But what I get is Teddie.”
“What do you mean?” Peter cocks his head to the side like a dog trying to
understand his owner’s gibberish.
“She’s everywhere, all the time! Whenever I leave my room, she’s in the kitchen
baking cookies or cakes or whatever the fuck she’s making for the day.”
Peter gives a low whistle. “Sounds rough.”
I glare at him, trying to think of other things I find annoying about Teddie. “She’s
always… humming or singing.”
“Yikes. Can’t carry a tune?”
I throw my hands up. “No! Always on-key with perfect pitch, which makes it even
worse! She’s like an angelic little songbird.”
Peter gives me a sarcastic look through the screen. “Ah, yes, that must be
fucking horrible.”
“And she’s practically sunshine in a sundress. I’m losing my goddamn mind.” I
run my fingers through my hair as if to showcase the point. “I know this is all some sort
of cover, like she has a nefarious plot to snuff me out before I can leave a bad review or
something.”
Peter shakes his head at me. “Oh, my sweet, naïve little brother… You’re in a
mess—that’s for sure. Let me tell you what’s actually going to happen.” He leans in
closer, so I mimic his movements. “You’re going to fall in love with this woman and stay
in Christmas Key forever.”
“It’s Candy Cane Key,” I reply robotically before realizing what he said and
sputtering. “That’s never going to happen!”

I gave one last longing look at the spring, now rippling softly. Absently, I followed the ripples to a pair of dark eyes peeking from out of the water.

I gasped, tripped backward over a root, and scrambled to the tree line. Was I intoxicated again? Was it something in the air? A gas leak from a nearby mine? The eyes followed me but the figure did not move, its head poking out of the water up to the bridge of its nose.

The sound of my breath filled the clearing, hard and fast. Then it dawned on me that if this was a hallucination, a figment of my mind’s creation, then it couldn’t hurt me. Probably.

“Who… what are you?” I called across the clearing.

The creature emerged enough to speak over the water. “Rude.”

Though its voice was deep and quiet, I heard it as if from beside me – a deep, slow rumble that didn’t fill the clearing but vibrated through my body. I blinked. “Excuse me?”

“First, you wake me by rutting up against me. I was having the most remarkable dream before the interruption. Then, just as things get interesting, you run off like a frightened jackrabbit. Now, these rude questions. I have never understood you humans.”

“So you’re… not human.”

The creature stirred but I held my ground. It stepped closer, water trailing down its elongated chest and the curve of its belly before disappearing onto the surface of the pool. I swallowed hard. It stretched out its arm as if examining itself and leaned in a way that brought to mind a shrug. “I suppose I was human once.”

I stifled my next questions. What are you now? What made you this way?

“Is this your home?” I ventured instead, taking a step forward.

The creature stretched towards the banks of the spring. Its… their body was even longer than I realized, their torso ridged with muscles drawing my eyes down, lower until they were foiled by the reflection of the water. “I dwell here from time to time.”

I steeled myself and stepped forward again, balling my trembling hands into fists at my sides. Something deep and primal screamed at me to run, but a deeper curiosity compelled me forward still. The creature watched me without blinking, their facade as still as a stone. How many humans had they sucked in like this, to be consumed? Would I face ecstasy or oblivion if I kept going? Would it change a thing if I knew?

Her father stood, arms crossed over his chest, frowning over their Alpha’s left shoulder. No one in the pack looked the Alpha in the eyes except his mate, and possibly his children. Alpha Peters stood a yard and a half away from her father. His hands clasped in front of him, with a serious, concerned expression on his face. Next to him, only about a foot away, stood Richard, his expression smug.

What does that expression mean? What does he have to be smug about? He cheated on me.

Rip him a new one. Her wolf growled.

“Ah, Emma, thank you for joining us. As I said to your father, I apologize for interrupting your evening meal.” The Alpha’s smooth, deep voice was cordial, as if they were discussing clothing options for a formal event. He was an older, slightly taller version of Richard. There was never any doubt the two were related.

“Of course, Alpha.” Emma replied automatically as she came to stand only a few inches from her father. The anger vibrating off him was comforting. And she took a deep breath before looking at the Alpha’s chin, waiting for the older man to speak. Her nerves winding tighter now that she was close enough to smell Alpha Peters’ annoyance. 

“Your father informed me of the situation you and Richard find yourselves in. I, like several others, thought you were aware of his dalliances and had no problem with them. Honestly, I figured you were having a few yourself and were just more discreet than my son.” There was some disgust in his voice as he mentioned his son’s lack of discretion.

Emma felt her wolf bristle with insult, but Emma forced herself to remain calm. It wouldn’t do anyone any good for her to show any anger or aggression towards the Alpha. So instead, she said nothing and waited.

The Alpha sighed heavily. “I have come in an attempt to make amends with your family. Although you are not a beta family in my pack or an Alpha and another, Richard and I have come here so he can discuss a solution with you.” The older man turned to his son and motioned for him to step forward. “Richard?”

What the heck is going on and why do I think things are about to get worse?

Because they are. That sorry excuse for a wolf is hiding something. I can smell it on him. The growl was so thick Emma had trouble making out her wolf’s words. 

Richard took a step forward. Then he hesitated, but only for a moment, before a cocky smile reformed on his face. “I am sorry you had to find out about my dalliances in this way. I promise you, I planned to stop once our union was solidified. That is until the first child was conceived.”

Union? What union? Does that mean he meant to continue to cheat on me for a year or more? 

Of course he did. He would see no reason to stop. Her wolf snorted. Emma could feel her furry counterpart pacing within her in agitation.

“I see how my actions have affected you. Because of that, my father and I think it would be best to move up our timeline. Emma, I would like to ask for your hand in marriage. We can put this all behind us and start fresh as husband and wife.” He stepped forward again, opening a small box to show off a rather large, gaudy diamond ring.

You hate diamonds, snorted her wolf.

Before she could respond, she heard the soft growl coming from her father. “You insult my daughter.” Her father’s voice was so menacing it snapped Emma’s attention to him. Her father was an easy-going, lovable man. This was a side of him she never saw.

“Do not snap at my son. Know your place, wolf.” The Alpha growled back. It was a warning, and everyone in the room knew it.

Gretchen spawned in the Puget Sound region. After some wandering she returned there and now lives with her husband and the daintiest Rottweiler on the planet. When not drowning herself in coffee, as is custom in the Greater Seattle Area, Gretchen can be found at her day job or sitting at her desk in the home office, flailing her arms as she dictates to her computer.
