Celebrating Women in Horror Month (Part 2) By Kelli A. Wilkins!

Hi everyone,

Valentine’s Day is officially over, and if you’ve had your fill of love and romance for a while, why not curl up with a horror story?

As you may know, February is “Women in Horror” month. To celebrate, I’m blogging about my “disturbing” novella, Nightmare in the North and my 2023 horror/thriller The Route 9 Killer.

Nightmare in the North is a cautionary tale about traveling alone in the winter and trusting strangers.

NIGHTMARE IN THE NORTH

Stranded during a violent blizzard, Mark hikes to the only house nearby. George, a well-mannered University professor, welcomes Mark and gives him shelter from the storm.

By morning, Mark suspects that everything isn’t what it seems. George’s adult daughter, Kate, who also lives in the house, shares a disturbing and unsettling tale. When questioned, George insists that Kate has a psychological issue and can’t be trusted to tell the truth.

Mark quickly finds himself caught in a game of cat and mouse. Who should he believe? Is Kate’s desperate plea for help sincere? Should he be suspicious of George? Or are both of them plotting something together?

Isolated from everyone, Mark is forced to wait out the storm—and find a way to escape—if he hopes to make it out alive.

***

So… how did this novella come about? Believe it or not, I wrote a version of this story for my eighth grade English class. The assignment was to write a short story – and boy, did I! The original version was much shorter and less detailed, but the basic premise was there. I’m not sure what my English teacher thought when she read it, but I got an A.

I grew up in upstate New York where winters can be brutal and last a long time. It can be an isolated place, and sometimes you could be snowed in for days. I decided to use that as the backdrop to the story, throw in some strange characters, and add a little mystery. After I submitted the story for my English class, I pretty much forgot about it.

Then, in January of 2018 I drove to Vermont in a snowstorm. I was in the car for 12 hours, and naturally, my mind started to wander… I wanted to write a new horror story, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to write. As I was driving, I thought back to the original story and decided to rewrite it – to tell the story the way it needed to be told.

I changed the opening, moved the setting to Vermont, and filled in all the details and backstory that set the tone. The ending of the new version is slightly different from the original, but it’s not off by much. I added an epilogue (of sorts) to the end, and spent about twenty minutes getting the last line just right. After reading Nightmare in the North, my husband said it was well written and it drew you in, but it was “twisted” and “disturbing” – I consider that high praise!

The Route 9 Killer was released in 2023, and it’s been a long time coming. Years ago I had an idea for a serial killer/thriller story that was sparked by something simple: I was driving somewhere and saw a woman’s shoe lying in the road.

I started wondering about the shoe and then an idea hit me. It was a simple “What if…” premise: What if a woman was abducted and the only evidence left behind was her shoe in the road? I bounced this idea off of a few people, and they scoffed. “Who cares about a shoe? Why would anything think someone was abducted based on a shoe?” But, when I explained my story idea, they were intrigued.

As the title implies, the book is a mystery/thriller involving a serial killer. The hero, Detective Jim Rourke, thinks he’s discovered a serial killer operating in Central New Jersey. The only problem is, nobody believes him. The women are abducted from different towns in the same county, and their bodies are dumped in different towns in another county. This makes it hard for the police to connect the crimes or even see a pattern. To them, the killings are random.

See if you can solve the mystery of…

The Route 9 Killer

Detective Jim Rourke suspects a serial killer is hunting women in Central New Jersey. The victims are held captive, brutalized, then murdered and dumped along deserted stretches of Route 9.

There’s no physical evidence, no witnesses, and the killer is smart enough to leave no clues.

Rourke is alone on a manhunt, and time is running out. Eight victims have already fallen prey to this madman.

Can Rourke catch the killer and rescue the next victim before it’s too late?

Protecting the Gray Wolf

Lone Wolf Legacy Book 2

by N.J. Walters

Genre: Paranormal Romance

If they want his immortality—they’ll have to take it…in the second deeply sexy and bold Lone Wolf Legacy series from New York Times bestselling author N.J. Walters

I’m used to other wolves coming for me. They want their chance to try and take out the infamous Gray Wolf. And every single one of them fails—because lone wolves aren’t like the others…we’re stronger. Harder. Meaner. Immortal.

But it also means I’m alone. No pack. No alpha. Just the three of us—white, gray, and black. Two too many, if you ask me.

But with power-hungry mages gunning for us, I don’t have the luxury of reflection. They’re in New York City, and I Will. Hunt. Them. Down.

Which is when I see her, and every cell in my body is on alert, filled with the kind of primal longing I never knew I was capable of. Luna West may be human, but there’s some kind of thread connecting us. Call it destiny, fate…or voracious animal hunger.

I know she’s bait. She’s meant to tempt me, to make me weak.

But even if I could resist her, I’m not sure I want to. Because I’ve never denied my wolf anything…especially the chance to raise some serious hell.

And I’m not about to start now.

Fear had a taste; it was bitter and foul. Sweat beaded on her brow. Her throat tightened, making her threat to yell a lie.

Fight or flight. He was too damn big to fight. Putting both hands against his chest, she shoved. Caught off guard, he pitched backward. She ran for the door. She’d barely made it two steps before a big arm banded around her waist and plucked her right off her feet. She kicked back with her heels.

“Stop fighting me. I’m not going to hurt you.”

Like she’d believe him. She had and the hurt of his betrayal was almost as bad as the loss of her work. That could be replicated. She doubted she’d ever lower her guard enough to trust another soul as long as she lived. Lesson learned. Kick someone enough times and they finally got the message. People couldn’t be trusted.

She threw her head back, trying to catch his nose. He swore, managing to duck out of the way. “Let me go.” The demand came out as more of a plea.

He buried his face in the curve of her neck. “I can’t.”

Physically and mentally exhausted, she stopped struggling. There was no way she could win against his strength. If she was smart, maybe she could lull him into believing she’d given in and watch for another opportunity.

“I don’t know Solange Dupree.” Ignoring her snort of disbelief, he forged on. “But I know the name. I recently learned I had an enemy. Want to guess her name?”

“That’s not possible. We never met until last night. Why would she bother with me?”

He slowly lowered her so her feet touched the floor but didn’t remove his arm. “It’s a long story.”

She snorted. “Not like I’m going anywhere.” Not yet, at any rate. The door was a matter of feet away, but it might as well have been miles—with a gator-infested moat
in-between.

Sighing, he unwound his arm. “I won’t keep you against your will.”

Wait. What? She turned, certain there must be some kind of catch. His lips were tight. His stormy gray eyes burned with anger. Her earlier fear dissolved, which made no sense.

He’s angry at himself, not me.

He was also telling the truth. “Why? Why let me go?” Seconds before, he’d blocked her from leaving.

“Having you afraid of me is worse than losing you.” He straightened and put his hands on his hips. “I’ll let you go, but I’ll follow. If you don’t believe anything, believe this. Solange will stop at nothing to capture me. If that means she has to hurt you to do it, she will. I can’t allow that.”

Luna rubbed her fingers over her forehead. “I feel like I’m missing half the conversation. Nothing makes any sense. Why does she want you? And why do you care what happens to me? I’m nothing to you.”

He reached out, as if to cup her face, but dropped his hand back by his side. “We’re connected you and I.”

Damn it, she felt it, too. As much as she wanted to deny it, pretend it wasn’t real, the link existed. “Why? How?”

“I keep telling you. I’m the gray wolf.”

It’s a tough life, but someone’s got to live it.

Book Extract from Dark Days at the Beach Hotel, 16th February

Helen Bygrove, who’s taken over management of the Beach Hotel since her husband has been conscripted, has just heard of libellous letters being sent in the town from local guests. She’s then confronted by the new Detective Inspector, recently medically discharged from the army, who implies the hotel might have something to do with the letters.

A well-dressed man in a blue striped suit, navy mackintosh and a grey fedora entered the foyer. His appearance gave her quite a start, but in a pleasant way. She wasn’t sure why.

After looking around the foyer and seeming impressed, he approached the desk, frowning. Helen noted the dark brown hair, the large blue eyes and the dimples. She would have thought him handsome indeed, had his countenance not been so serious. He was tall, likely well over six feet.

Miss Harvey greeted him with a smile. ‘Why, Inspector. Fancy seeing you here. We meet again.’

‘Good morning, Miss Harvey,’ he said, somewhat shortly. He turned his attention to Helen. ‘I am Inspector Detective Toshack. Could I speak to the manager, please?’ There was a Scottish lilt to his accent.

‘Good morning, Inspector. I am currently the manageress, as my husband is now in the army.’

‘In that case, I would like to speak to you.’

‘Of course, in one moment, as my replacement on the desk is due about now. In the meantime, Miss Harvey, do go through to the conservatory.’

The woman looked disappointed. She hesitated before moving off without a word.

DI Toshack, meanwhile, was tapping the fingers of one hand on the desk, somewhat impatiently. ‘How long exactly, before your replacement arrives?’

The door to the staff corridor opened and Edie emerged, a few seconds before the clock chimed the half hour.

‘Here she is,’ said Helen. ‘Perhaps we could conduct this conversation in my office?’

He held out his hand. ‘Lead the way.’

‘Edie, I will be in the office, should anyone need me.’

‘Very well, Helen.’

‘Edie Moore is my undermanageress,’ she told Toshack as she led him to the staff corridor. They turned right part way down, into a smaller, narrower passageway, which led to the office.

Inside, she sat at the desk, indicating that he should take the seat on the other side.

‘I’ll stand, thank you.’

‘Is this about the anonymous letters some people have been receiving?’

‘You know about them then?’ He narrowed his eyes.

‘Only since five minutes ago, when Miss Harvey informed me of them.’

‘You haven’t received any yourself?’

‘I have not, no.’

‘That’s surprising, given that many of the proprietors of the bigger guest houses in the area have received them.’

‘Is that just in Beach Town? Miss Harvey hinted as such.’

He blew out impatiently. ‘Since I have no idea what this Beach Town refers to, I can’t answer that.’

‘It’s a local name for the area around the beach and the streets behind South Terrace, as opposed to the area around the River and the Town.’

‘It doesn’t matter where exactly they’ve been received, only who has received them, and, ultimately, who has sent them.’

‘Well, I can help you with neither I’m afraid, Inspector.’

‘You may be able to.’

‘How so?’

He pulled a face, as if in pain, and held onto the back of the chair, lifting his left leg a little. When he was composed once more, he said, ‘How many employees do you have here at the hotel?’

‘Twelve live-in staff, and twenty-five live-out staff, including gardeners, plus the attendant who looks after our private hotel garage and lives in the cottage next door. Thirty-eight in all.’

‘I will need samples of all their handwriting.’

‘I will certainly try, though one or two may not be terribly literate.’

‘Then it won’t have been them who wrote the letters, will it?’

Normally she’d have been happy to cooperate with the police, but his tone was making her feel rebellious. ‘May I ask why my staff are being singled out? Are others being asked to produce samples?’

‘Some, yes. But there are things written in the letters received, implying that someone in the immediate vicinity, and working in an establishment such as this, has sent them.’

Helen felt a little annoyed by this accusation. ‘Why would any of my staff have reason to do that? If anything, the fact that we’re the premier hotel in the area is more likely to provoke jealousy and make us the target.’

‘But you haven’t received any letters.’

‘Not yet, no.’

‘I will call back in a couple of days to collect the samples.’

‘Not everyone will have been in work by then.’

‘Then you must do your best. And I will need your handwriting too.’ He looked her squarely in the eyes, almost as if he were – accusing her?

‘Of course.’

‘Thank you. I'll find my own way out.’

As he turned, she asked, ‘May I enquire whether you are DI Davis’s replacement?’ even though she knew he was.

‘Aye, that’s right. Good day to you.’

He walked slowly towards the door, turning only briefly to consider her, before he opened the door and left.

That was an interesting introduction to the new inspector, she thought. Although DI Davis could be firm, he’d always been charming. She didn’t know what to make of this man. It was as if he resented doing his job. Or resented being in Littlehampton?

Yet… There was something else she couldn’t quite put her finger on. She pictured his face, his expression. Sadness. Was that it? Or had she imagined it?

The Huntsmen had arrived.

They were all large, dressed in furs, leathers, and thick boots. The men had thick beards and braids; the women either wore braids or had shorn hair. All of them wore armor of some kind, with runic designs upon their crests. Ghost green flames danced and kissed across their skin. As Valentine watched, she saw that their skin flickered and faded in the moonlight, alternately translucent and opaque. During the translucent phases, she saw their skeletons underneath.

She shivered.

Then, beyond the Huntsmen, she saw the mounts.

They were stunning.

Each horse shimmered, dressed in golds and silvers, blues and violets, coppers and moonlight. They were enormous, with hooves the size of dinner plates and lush manes that draped across the starlit skin. Valentine watched as they huffed, stamped their feet, and half-reared. They were ready, she could tell. They wanted to hunt, to chase.

She heard Malcolm’s prosaic voice in her head. Choose the smallest mount.

Valentine scanned the herd. There.

The smallest mount glowed like a golden fire in the moonlight, with a silver mane. Compared to the others, this one was dainty, almost delicate. Valentine cast a quick glance at the Huntsmen, then started forward, crouching low to avoid notice. As she moved forward, she draped the bridle over her shoulder, then pulled out the packet of frankincense and myrrh. She poured it into her hands, then crept forward. She stopped before the golden creature, a good six feet away. Though this mount was smaller than the others, it was by no means tiny.

When Valentine stilled, the horse raised her head.

What do you want, mortal? The voice sounded like a crack of lightning in her head. The eyes glowed with violet flame.
