A DIFFERENT KIND OF JOURNEY

So, why a labyrinth? While watching the film version of The Shining, I concluded that the story is actually about Wendy Torrance, the true heroine of the tale.

The star power of Jack Nicholson misled me into thinking the story was about Jack Torrance. Once I rewatched the film as a story about a heroine, my entire understanding of the story shifted.

Near the beginning of the film, Wendy tours the Overlook Hotel and comments, “I feel like I have to leave a trail of breadcrumbs.” Her statement, which also references the cautionary folktale, Hansel and Gretel, struck me as an intriguing piece of story exposition.

The tour showed Wendy the many hallways, chambers, and dead ends she’d soon have to navigate at the Overlook Hotel. Wendy Torrance was in a labyrinth. As if to further emphasize this thematic reality, a real labyrinth—the infamous hedge maze—lay just outside, a perfect literary complement to the symbolism of the heroine’s setting.

Th is first and most basic orientation sets the tone for the entire story you plan on telling, whether it’s fiction, a personal memoir, or even a roleplaying adventure. The nature of the journey determines the nature of the conflict, which often defines the villain. These are organic structures that emerge within a story. Th e hero’s journey plots a linear course, traveling from point A to point B, ever onward, further from home and into unfamiliar environs before returning home.

However, many heroines in fiction go on a different journey, one characterized by repetitive circles and often closer to home. Indeed, most heroines never leave the native culture. The adventure hides behind closed doors and interior spaces of otherwise familiar places. The journey travels inward and creates incredible friction while the heroine develops her sense of identity and self-realization. So, many heroine-centric stories feature heroines in conflict with their native culture, and this conflict lays the groundwork for the entire narrative structure I call the “Heroine’s Labyrinth.”

Douglas A. Burton is a novelist and storyteller whose various works emphasize heroic women in fiction. Burton’s debut historical novel, Far Away Bird, brought Byzantine Empress Theodora to life through an intimate biographical account. The novel collected numerous awards including gold medals for the IBPA’s Best New Voice in Fiction, Readers’ Favorite Historical Personage, and eLit’s Best Historical Fiction eBook. Far Away Bird was also a finalist for the Montaigne Medal (Eric Hoffer Book Award) and Screencraft’s Cinematic Book competition. Burton’s newest book, The Heroine’s Labyrinth, is a nonfiction writing craft book that offers a paradigm shift for story structure. Presented as a distinctive counterpart to the well-trodden hero’s journey, Burton explores the unique narrative arc and archetypal designs that recur in heroine-led fiction. He currently lives in Austin, TX with his wonderful wife, Crystal, and two energetic boys, Jacob and Lucas.

The Boleyn Wife by Brandy Purdy Spotlight!

The Boleyn Wife (Lady Jane Rochford, Anne Boleyn's jealous and vengeful sister-in-law who served as a lady-in-waiting to five of Henry VIII's six queens)

Shy, plain Lady Jane Parker feels out of place in Henry VIII's courtly world of glamour and intrigue--until she meets the handsome George Boleyn. Overjoyed when their fathers arrange a match, her dreams of a loving union are waylaid when she meets George's sister, Anne. For George is completely devoted to his sister, and cold and indifferent to his bride. As Anne acquires a wide circle of admirers, including King Henry, Jane's resentment grows. But if becoming Henry's queen makes Anne the most powerful woman in England, it also makes her highly vulnerable. And as Henry, desperate for a male heir, begins to tire of his mercurial wife, the stage is set for the ultimate betrayal...

Encompassing the reigns of five of Henry's queens, THE BOLEYN WIFE is an unforgettable story of ambition, lust, and jealousy, of the power of love to change the course of history, and of the terrible price of revenge.

Book Description from bybrandypurdy.blogspot.com

The Boleyn Wife (Lady Jane Rochford, Anne Boleyn's jealous and vengeful sister-in-law who served as a lady-in-waiting to five of Henry VIII's six queens)

Brandy Purdy (Emily Purdy in the UK) is the author of the historical novels THE CONFESSION OF PIERS GAVESTON, THE BOLEYN WIFE (THE TUDOR WIFE), THE TUDOR THRONE (MARY & ELIZABETH), and THE QUEEN'S PLEASURE (A COURT AFFAIR).

An ardent book lover since early childhood, she first became interested in history at the age of nine or ten years old when she read a book of ghost stories which contained a chapter about Anne Boleyn haunting the Tower of London.

When I first started blogging in September 2009 The Boleyn Wife was one of the first books I spotted on other blogs. There were a lot of early reviews that I read and it sounded like a book I really wanted to read. I am also an avid fan of Anne Boleyn so that was a selling point right there. At this point I had not read a lot about Jane Boleyn other than the fact that I really did not like her. I found her to be a whinny, vindictive and all-around nasty person, but I still wanted to read The Boleyn Wife. Note* this review may have some spoilers.

The Boleyn Wife takes place over five reigns of Henry VIII’s wives. The story is told in Lady Jane Boleyn’s, nee Rochford, voice starting with her last days in the tower. She awaits her fate after being charged with treason along with Katherine Howard who was sentenced to death for adultery. She speaks of her young years, of her father, Lord Morley, and Sir Thomas Boleyn and how they want a match between their children Jane Rochford and George Boleyn. Jane was sole heiress to her father's fortune and George was the only Boleyn son. Jane was already in love with George when first she came to Henry’s court.

The same could not be said of her feelings toward George’s sister Anne. Jane despised Anne almost from the beginning, beside Anne she felt homely, clumsy, shy. She said she was not as accomplished as Anne, didn’t dance or sing as well. She also noticed right away George’s attentions were always taken up with Anne. It took 3 years before she became part of the Boleyn family, and not very well liked at that.

As time goes on, Jane’s animosity and immense dislike of Anne grows into hate as her husband George cares not at all about Jane and spends all his time with Anne and her admirers, Sir Francis Weston, Sir Henry Norris, Sir Thomas Wyatt, Sir William Brereton and Mark Smeaton.

During this time King Henry VIII is pursuing Anne and trying to get his marriage annulled from Catherine of Aragon. Henry desperately wants a legitimate male heir to follow him on the throne. Catherine suffers many miscarriages and is not able to have a male living child. They do have a daughter though, Mary. Henry eventually gets his way, his divorce and his Anne.

Henry and Anne’s marriage is very tumultuous, and Anne is not able to have a male heir either. They do have a daughter together, Elizabeth, but Henry is adamant that he needs a son. During this time Jane’s hatred keeps growing as she is constantly pushed aside by her husband for Anne. She starts to spy on Anne and sees George and Anne and all their friends having fun, dancing and singing and being happy while she becomes more despondent and unhappy. George literally wants nothing to do with Jane so there are no children. Jane believes that her husband and Anne are having an incestuous relationship.

As Henry falls out of love with Anne, Jane is ready to seek her revenge on George and Anne. She has become a nagging wife and George wants nothing to do with her. Queen Anne has another miscarriage and Henry is done with her.

Jane at this time is befriended by Thomas Cromwell, who also despises Anne and has his own political agenda and uses Jane to discredit Anne and her followers. As a result, George and his friends are charged with treason against the King and George is also charged with incest with Anne and is sentenced to death. Anne is eventually charged with treason and incest with her brother and also sentenced to death.

We all know what happens after that. Henry is free to marry again, and he chooses Jane Seymour, a very lovely woman who is also a pawn of her family. The are married for a short time. Jane dies after giving birth to a sickly son, Edward. After she dies Henry marries again this time to Anne of Cleeves who does not speak English very well and he finds her unattractive so he sends her off to live as his ‘sister’ so he can marry again.

Jane remains at court as a lady in waiting to these queens and Henry does marry again to Katherine Howard, Jane becomes close to ‘Kat” and aides her in her adulterous relationship with Thomas Culpepper. Katherine was raised in a very liberal way and had quite a few dalliances with men when she lived with her grandmother. Then she met Thomas Culpepper, and they were madly in love with each other. Unfortunately, Katherine’s past does catch up with her in the guise of a childhood friend that she had had a relationship with. Once Henry finds all this out, he imprisons Jane and Katherine, Katherine for adultery and Jane for aiding and abetting Katherine and Thomas’s relationship.

Through all this I think that Jane thought she was trying to do good after she had been the catalyst that caused Anne and George to be executed and I think that she actually felt a lot of guilt in this. Not for Anne because she still hated her until the day, she died but she felt if it hadn’t been for Anne, George would have loved her, and things would have been good between them.

I feel that all the women portrayed in this book were at the whim and mercy of the men around them. This was a time when women hardly mattered in the scheme of things and all they really were there for was to have children and if they were rich, they would enrich the men's coffers. I think that these women were all strong in their own way. I did come to have some sympathy for Jane, circumstances seemed to be against her, and she was so in love with her husband that she was driven to the point of madness, anger and revenge.

I enjoyed this story very much and it was very well written and researched. As I have said before, I am not a historian, and I am not bothered whether a story is historically correct or not. I liked this story as another perspective of life in the Tudor court.

To Pledge Allegiance by Robert W. Smith Book Spotlight with an Excerpt and Guest Post!

Assassination, espionage, war, and vigilante violence.

Welcome to Chicago in 1917.

Within this cauldron of intrigue and deceit, live nearly half a million Irish and German American immigrants, among them Irish-born lawyer Conor Dolan and his wife Maureen. The Dolans are among thousands of immigrants marked as “hyphenated Americans,” their reluctance to support the war cry branding them “enemy aliens.”

When one of the legendary Chicago Newsboys takes a lethal bullet from a German Luger during a warehouse break-in, his mysterious companion escapes, and Conor is determined to find the killer.  He discovers instead a link between the burglary and the murder of a prominent Chicago arms broker with ties to the Allied powers and possibly the mob. Despite warnings from a powerful group of government-backed vigilantes and a suspicious lack of cooperation from the police, Conor presses on at his own peril to root out the boy’s killer.

Was it a German agent? An Allied agent? The mob? Or maybe even the police themselves by some deceitful plan? The closer he gets to the answer, the greater the danger to those he loves.

To Pledge Allegiance Excerpt

All Conor could think of was the new Selective Service Act. Wilson was increasing the size of the army with a national draft as war loomed. Conor forced himself from the chair and grabbed Dillon by the collar. Fastening the leash, he said, “That’s enough information for tonight. It’s late but I may stop at Scanlon’s with Dillon on the walk to thank him. Don’t worry. I’ll deal with Saint Bridget’s High School, and we’ll continue our conversation about the Clan tomorrow.”

With so much on his mind, the cold air and brisk walk helped clear his head. Conor still considered himself American but supported neutrality as much as his wife. Like most of the Chicago Irish-Americans, he bore no ill will toward Germany and retained a deep resentment for all things British. He saw no conflict in that complicated tangle of sentiments. Until recently, they’d both done their part for the IRB and the rebellion in Ireland through the Clan-na-Gael, but it was too dangerous these days and the pipeline had dried up. He hoped Germany would win quickly now with Russia in disarray and talk of the Czar’s abdication. The Russians would surely capitulate in the coming weeks. Maureen might not. Her hatred of England ran deep and with good reason. But, if she couldn’t keep her head down and her trap shut now, there would be trouble enough to go around.

He wondered sometimes if Maureen felt any spark of loyalty whatsoever to their adopted country. Before meeting Conor, she had known only poverty and injustice here since emigrating from Ireland under horrific circumstances about which they hadn’t spoken in years; the elephant in the room.

It took Dillon forever to get down to business as they walked west on Thirty-Second Street, but he got the job done before they reached Tommy Scanlon’s Saloon. The proprietor was a Clare man from Listoonvarna. Their kids often played together and Scanlon shared Conor’s conflicted opinions about war and about “God’s one, true Church.” The saloon keeper was also an executive committee member of the Clan-na-Gael, technically anyway, as the organization only existed in the minds of Irish Americans these days.

Unlike Conor’s old friend, Dog, Dillon didn’t like saloons; maybe it was the smoke or the racket of fiddles and flutes; more likely he had no taste for beer. Still, the two had become attached, inseparable, the neighbors would say. Their common passion was music. Often, as Conor would unwind in the evening with a whiskey at the grand piano, Dillon would lie quietly at his feet listening, even piping in with a melodic harmony on occasion. Conor tied the mut outside and went in.

In a way, the news about Patrick’s school trouble was the worst of the lot, especially in light of the changing political winds. Unlike young Liam, Patrick was his stepson, but he loved the boy as his own and had helped raise him that way. If war came, Patrick’s wild streak and his lust for adventure could prove an existential disaster. The boy was too much like his mother. Patrick and his friends already talked about enlisting, going to Europe and finishing off the “Huns.” Poor Maureen lived in fear of the ultimate nightmare. Conor had hoped that by now the lad would have expressed interest in becoming a lawyer like his old “Pa,” but the boy was in transition to manhood, strong-headed and would need to find his own way.

Their youngest boy, Liam, twelve, would thankfully never die a soldier. The boy’s Polio caused him to limp badly, maybe even require a crutch at some point, according to the doctors, but his mind was curious and his future bright.

He stepped up to Scanlon’s bar and noticed the folded republican newspaper, The Gaelic American, on the bar. It was hard to get ahold of a copy these days as the paper had disappeared from the newsstands. The front page had nothing of the Zimmerman Telegram as it required a few days to ship from New York but could still be found in every Irish saloon in Chicago, a large number, indeed. The headline announced what might prove to be the last hanging execution in connection with the 1916 Easter Rising.

Conor could put a name to every one of the dozen or so night drinkers at the horseshoe-shaped bar, mainly Irish-born with a few Irish-Americans and Germans for variety. As he exchanged greetings, Scanlon placed a bowl of water on the bar as usual. “And how is our teetotaling Dillon tonight?”

“Don’t ask and I’ll tell you no lies. Quick stop tonight, Tommy. I wanted to thank you for your help today.”

“Think nothing of it, my friend.” While Scanlon poured drinks, Conor took the bowl outside for Dillon.

He stayed only long enough to down his drinks. There were dangerous days ahead—for Conor, for his family, and for everyone who openly rejected the clamor of fife and drum.

A Long Way from Clare

From the Courtroom into the Time Capsule

“What were your goals and intentions in writing this book and how well do you feel you achieved them?” It’s the most common question at book club events. If folks really enjoyed a book, they want to know more. Why did you write it? Are the characters based on real people?

I have written different books for different reasons, but I have never written a book on contract, for example, without any articulable motivation beyond money. As a retired person, I enjoy the freedom to write what I like. So I wrote this new book, To Pledge Allegiance for the most elementary and simplistic reason I can imagine: My old characters and Chicago’s rich history dragged me back to become a fly on the wall as they and their city face off in those tumultuous days in Spring of 1917 leading up to the Declaration of War against Germany. Will Conor’s and Maureen’s experiences in 1903 have equipped them to survive the perils of “hyphenated-American” status as the McKinley Administration moves to quash the national peace movement, especially in New York, Seattle and the Windy City that has become their home?

During my research, the obvious parallels with 2024 global dynamics leapt from the pages of newspapers, memoirs and long forgotten historical records of assaults on our democracy. Within this forgotten history, vigilante gangs under the authority of our Justice Department roam the streets, the workplace, even the schools in search of dissenting friends and neighbors. Speaking out against the war has become a de facto act of treason.

My own ancestors walked those streets in 1917; they suffered the taunts, the abuses, eventually joining the stampede to crush “The Hun.” My grandfather volunteered for wartime service and survived the slaughter only to send his own son off to the beaches of Normandy, a ritual repeated for the next generation in 1968. Always they came back to Chicago.

For all these reasons, writing this book became for me a journey in a time capsule with the goal of walking the streets they walked, feeling the stigma of social neglect and injustice in hopes of discovering the things that drove them forward, the things that sustained them through heartbreak and setbacks.

So did I achieve my goals in writing this novel? I may never know. That is a conclusion best left to readers. But I think I understand this complicated city a little better. People are harder to understand, especially people who died before your time. My best answer is that I am getting warmer, closer to knowing family I never met and to better understanding family I did know. Perhaps Conor Dolan himself summed it up best when describing loneliness, poverty and rejection in the unforgiving city by the lake. “…Sometimes it filters out the pettiness, idle temptations, and vices…of men who have too much and give too little. This can be a mean city.”

Read an excerpt:

Introduction

I did not start out bold, but I was always strong. I have experienced great heights and understand the pain of searching to find a way out of the valley to escape being lost.

No single defining event motivated me to search for bold. An accumulation of feelings and prior experiences drove me to the realization that I was not living the life I really wanted. I was not where I wanted to be in my career.

Most of the companies where I’ve worked were good, some were great, and a few were exceptional. I learned fast and was never afraid of a challenge or hard work. Finding opportunities came easily to me. Yet, I did not use this to my full advantage. I was still allowing companies to select me versus playing a more active role in the selection process. At times, I accepted positions that were below my full ability. Looking back, I was passive, too compliant, overly nice, and willing to sacrifice my time, energy, and sleep. I knew all of this but did not do anything to change the outcome.

That all changed after I had a chance to review my notes from a reference check for a new position. I personally knew the references who provided input from over the last seven to fifteen years of my work history. Each reference was asked to provide short answers to specific questions about their prior experience working with me, my general character, and professional impact. I cannot recall exactly how the specific question was worded, but essentially it asked about my experience and expertise. I remember everything slowing down as my eyes met the line that one of my references provided anonymously, which read:

“Audrey is so talented, amazing, and passionate. I only wish she could find the opportunity that is right for her and deserving of her skills.”

Those words washed over me like Niagara Falls. The assessment provoked me.

While I have now achieved success beyond what I believed was possible, it took longer for me to get there. Looking back, I made all the right moves but often made them without fully understanding my own strengths. I had the right cards in my hands, I just didn’t always play them to my benefit.

I was the common denominator in this dilemma. I do not attribute any of my painful lessons or missteps to any person or company other than me. I take accountability for not prioritizing myself and seeking the right culture and environment for me. I am ultimately accountable for my success.

I read those words again, and that was when it hit me. When we hold ourselves accountable, we take back control.

To Be True

Some people are not aware of the importance of searching for and discovering their proper and true role in life.
—Chin-Ning Chu (Chu, 1994)

Choosing to leave the ranks of a full-time employee (FTE) to independently pursue organizational change management (OCM) consulting and executive coaching required careful consideration and considerable courage. I remember thinking, Before I make the final decision to leave a full-time job with benefits, I’d better speak with someone who can help me weigh my options. The representative from EAP (Employee Assistant Program) was laid back, casual, and unassuming.

“So, what’s going on?” she asked. Then she listened without making a sound as I spoke. I was listening as well. Then she calmly and empathetically said, “Maybe you just don’t want to do it.” She was so neutral in her response that I could not tell if her reply was a question or a comment. Either way, she was right. I did not want to do “it.” I did not want to play it safe anymore.

The lessons of the past taught me many valuable lessons about myself, the importance of company culture, making brave choices, and finding the proverbial “right room.” The decision to take my power back and become more aware of what I want and what is right for me was a significant turning point in my life. Like a baptism, I decided to give up the old to embrace the new. I changed the way I value myself, the way I have selectively designed my career, and the choices that define my world.

The good that came out of the experience is a clear understanding of who I am, what I value, and how critical engagement is for living and for work. What came out of this experience was the motivation for unlocking my “bold.” Self-appreciation and understanding underscores the belief that when you show up as your true and authentic self, you will almost guarantee your success.

Further on in the book, we will discuss the Bold Value Equation (BVE), a “needs analysis” that compares what you are willing to give and what you expect from an employer in exchange for your expertise, time, and value. These needs reflected the “season of my life,” which represented more mature goals and aspirations than my younger, less-confident self. I was no longer willing to sacrifice my time, health, and autonomy. Reaping financial rewards without making a meaningful contribution to the company was no longer enough, nor was it worth it if my skills, experience, and knowledge were not fully needed, leveraged, and appreciated. After all, we all have financial, emotional, social, and environmental needs that must be recognized and satisfied in the workplace—and we have the authority to make choices that are required in order for us to move ahead in life.

Moving Ahead

Life continues even after making big decisions. Taking accountability and making peace with our decisions frees us from the burden of thinking there must be a right or wrong. On the path to becoming bold, moments like these test our resolve, define our character, and show us who we really are in the moment of choice. We emerge stronger by recognizing and honoring our truth.

Insights like these—along with the teaching of my parents, hands-on experience in OCM, and executive coaching—led me to write this book. I have dedicated my career to helping individuals and organizations change and transform.

This book is written with you in mind. All throughout, I will make the case for why intentionally identifying and leveraging your bold creates a powerful competitive advantage, not by telling you what you need to be or do but by telling you how to do less of what you are currently doing.

As a certified International Coaching Federation (ICF) coach and global consultant with over twenty-five years working with some of the world’s best companies, I under- stand the issues and the significance of company culture as well as what is required for individuals to transform their lives. I have designed transformation strategies for some of the world’s largest companies and trained leaders globally on communication effectiveness and issues management, in addition to having the honor of spending hundreds of hours deeply listening to and coaching individuals around the world.

In these pages, I will share true stories along with lessons and insights I learned working in corporate America. I want to recognize that at times I am vague and do not offer the tantalizing details of conversations that occurred at many of the companies where I worked. I do this to honor the value of confidentiality and to illustrate the bold move of taking the high road and moving away from the drama, as rehashing, reliving, and rumination do not offer a path forward. In fact, reliving such negative and often toxic events steals our joy and weakens our power.

Many of the structured processes and frameworks that I have included are inspired by my work in OCM and coaching. I am giving you the best of both worlds, as I have sat in many of the same places where you may find yourself today. I am now able to look at things objectively through the lens of both the employee and the expert, and this duality allows me to be empathetic and honest.

As an executive coach, I spent hundreds of hours listening to the stories, aspirations, hurts, and triumphs of my clients. I heard joy, pain, pressure, and disappointment in their voices. I saw dreams and spirits on the brink of breaking. I witnessed breakthroughs, setbacks, and personal victories. In coaching I follow, encourage, and challenge each one of them to achieve the goals they have established.

You know yourself best. Understanding this is essential to understanding the difference between leading and being led. While the information and thinking shared in this book have resulted in positive change and success for many of my clients, I will always take the position that you are the leader in your life, and this book is most valuable when you use it as inspiration in customizing a strategy that best suits you. If you find the models and processes helpful, you can use them as is or as a guide. Ultimately, remember that your talent, passion, mindset, and actions are the most important ingredients for catalyzing your success.

I wrote this book for the following reasons:

  • I hope and trust that it will motivate you to explore and unlock your true potential.
  • I truly believe “bold” is a powerful concept that anyone can access and use to improve their career and life.
  • I wish this book existed earlier in my career.
  • The timing of the book and the topics covered coincide with the current needs of many individuals who are at a crossroads in their lives and in their careers. This book is a resource and tool for reflection and planning.
  •

Several factors are driving the need for a bold mindset:

  • In the face of an increasingly complex, turbulent, and uncertain future, there is a need to cement your focus, power, and the resolve that is required to succeed.
  • Given the accelerated and changing nature of work, you need to become more autonomous, independent, and confident in who you are and in the value you provide.
  • Understanding yourself at your core will enable you to learn, adapt, and evolve. This is the secret to sustaining “your bold.”
  •

    We will discuss:

  • Why tapping into your true and authentic self is essential to your career and living your best life.
  • The importance of understanding your vision (a mental image of what you desire), values (embodiment of your character), value (valuation and impact of your utility, experience, and talent), and how you want to be valued (being recognized, compensated, etc.).
  • How you can use your bold to serve others.
  •

I kept the following four profiles in mind when writing this book:

  • Individuals who are tenured and who have mastered technical success but are in search of balance and greater fulfillment.
  • High performers on the cusp of unlocking their brilliance and attaining the next level of success, but their goal is often elusive, as “something” is standing in the way.
  • Middle managers who serve on the frontline of leadership but are often overlooked due to a lack of a personal strategy for promotion and success.
  • Individuals who are successful in getting a job but struggle to find the right lasting opportunity.
  •

I hope this book will help you:

  • See and appreciate your value and the bold in others.
  • Increase your confidence.
  • Own your choices and your career.
  •

    Your Call to Adventure

Nothing in life occurs by chance. I am guessing you may have found this book because you are searching for clarity, change, or direction. You sense from the cover that this is not your “typical” career book outlining exactly what you need to say or do. Perhaps you already own a few of those books, yet you are in search of more introspection. You are nuanced, after all, and the world is much too complex for rote advice.

You are at a place in your life that requires individual and purposeful consideration and planning. The time has come for you to do the deep introspection that only you can lead.

This book is simply a tool to inspire, illuminate, and affirm your personal strategy to live boldly.

I hope you will accept my invitation to stay open and curious about learning about yourself. Come along with me to explore what is possible when you realize your bold. Everything in this book is simple to apply but not always easy to achieve.

The difference between living boldly and ordinarily is like night and day. With a heightened level of awareness and commitment, you will start to see yourself and the world around you differently. Others will sense and see it too, but most importantly, you will experience it for yourself.

    Introduction to Bold Reflections

Each chapter is carefully selected and arranged to help you grow and transform at your own pace. Use chapter takeaways and powerful questions to gather insight to develop your strategies and action plans.

As you take on the challenge to bring forward the best version of yourself, reserve the time and find a quiet space to reflect. I recommend you keep a pen and notebook or voice-record app close by to record your thoughts and reflections at the end of each chapter.

What do you hope to learn about yourself by reading this book

What intrigues you the most about your reaction to the introduction of bold? Why?

    Are you ready?
